Valdez here Michelle and sha here please join me in the Pledge of Allegiance I pledge alance to the flag of the United States of America ands One Nation God indivisible andice I welcome everyone I'd like to uh start this evening uh by uh taking a moment of silence we had a uh these are always tough for me we had a member of our community um Jamie Stark she's a mother of four children in the district and a bus driver for Palmer uh died uh unexpectedly on the 25th of July so if you could uh join me and we of course uh U offer our condolences and deepest thoughts and prayers uh to the Stark family so if you could join me in a moment silence thank you on a halfe note uh as uh Tiffany uh uh mentioned her name uh doing the roll call we are joined tonight for the first time by Sha yumar our newest student School Board member welcome sh we are very happy to have you with us and uh if you like the floor is yours for uh any opening statements I'm I'm just excited to be here I think this be a fun first board meeting excited to meet everyone in talk welcome right thank you [Music] welcome all right next in our AGA are our agenda is our saber Pride section uh tonight uh we have um our athletic director uh Matt Hansen here with us and first up is item 3.1 spring Athletics Welcome Matt thank you and thanks for having me I know we're a little bit past spring so it might affect our attendance for some of our athletes that did qualify for state but uh excited for the ones that were able to make it so um our first sport uh we're going to talk about is Golf and I'll have Adam stand up um Adam was our uh the qualified for state so I'll give a little bit about the season and then what coach wire said but uh our boys golf had a great season they finished second place in the conference several top finishers throughout the season they were led by Adam also had solid contributions from Logan remers and Tyler Loren uh both Adam and Tai zitzman made it to the second day of section play which is a accomplishment of own right there but uh Adam qualified for the state tournament as coach wire said uh Adam's in his third year uh is as our team captain he scored the mid 70s three of his first four rounds and the last seven rounds total he shot 76 at Stonebrook to help get us the conference win he also shot 79 at the conference Championship and 75 at the wolver Memorial headed into sections he shot backto back 73s at the ridges in order to qualify believe was fth at section and then uh he shot 77 and 79 for 40th Place at the state tournament so uh congratulations to Adam and our boys golf team that's pretty good not just one that's an 18 HS right or n all 18 I might uh our next sport is track and field and um track and field this is from coach H Haskins he couldn't be here tonight but he said the 2024 tracking field season was a huge success the girls were a little bit young but developed as a team even uh we had a lot of Youth even though we had a lot of really good standards throughout the season on the boys saw we saw numerous people return with a few new faces uh the boys had one of the best seasons in the past a few decades they qualified for the True Team state meet um which hasn't happened since the early 2000s uh they also finished in second place in both the conference and the section during the season our boys broke a total of six school records records including the boys 200 the 4x100 relay the 4X 800 relay the 1600 the 3200 and the girls long jump so uh with us tonight we have one of our athletes um and she qualified in the girls 4X 100 and that's Audrey huther so Audrey if you want to stand up um and just along with that these were the 10 total events that we qualified as a team so we qualified in the girls high jump and long jump The discus the boys 3200 boys 4x8 girls 100 boys 4X two girls 4x1 boys 4 by1 and the boys 200 so this is the most we've sent in several years um and just an outstanding season from our boys and girls track team so congratulations Audrey [Music] [Music] for over here yeah than I'm good appreciate it thank [Music] yous app all right moving on to our adapted softball oh yeah excuse me softball so the southern Stars again made up of of our chasa Chanhassen Prior Lake and Shaka had another great season as a team we qualified for the state tournament in Chanhassen uh at State we unfortunately went 0 and2 but that doesn't diminish the accomplishments again to make the state tournament the southern stars have been competing at a high level for many years and this year was no different so we say congratulations to our adapted softball team on the girls golf side uh it was a little bit of a rebuilding year last year we sent uh a mar Morris to state so we worked quite at that level um both individually as a team but our team was young we had quite a few golfers uh so that's expected to have some success uh as we come into the next season we didn't make it out of the first round of the section but uh again the future is looking bright for our girls golf team and we move on to our boys baseball team so our team finished 15 and9 this year it was good enough for second place in the SSC we did receive the number one seed in our section um unfortunately we were one and two in the section play uh what hurt us was we ended up losing our top two pitchers throughout the year so um I thought we battled really hard you know in spite of losing um you know our two top pitchers one of them is going to Clemson next year on a scholarship so just to show that we were still very competitive without uh our our top person uh the highlight of the year uh I'm not sure if any of you were able to go but our team did play at Target Field this year um it was kind of ironic because we were on a time limit at Target Field so it actually ended at 22 at Target Field after eight Innings um but then a couple weeks later we resumed the game it ended up going to 19 Innings so it end being the longest game in the history of Shak B baseball so uh we did win that game um but it was kind of a a cool moment for everybody involved you know I think they ended up going almost 10 straight Innings without scoring a run when we resumed so it was pretty cool it was a first year for Coach Eric Schmitz and they had a really nice season so yeah Matt I would agree I was there that was just a cool event yeah yeah was yeah one one of the highlights of something that if you've been around baseball at all I mean that's about as as cool as a kid so uh our softball team finished their season 18- six uh they were 13-4 in the conference which was good enough for third place uh didn't quite have the magic as we had last year when they qualified for the state tournament but they still finished in third place uh we're a very senior heavy team this year uh a couple really good pitchers Sylvia shrof and Matty Su both will be going on to college to to play softball along with a couple hitters Chase Doran and Lily treml who will also be going on to play college softball so uh we did just hire a new coach uh coach Lindsey van Lingham who's a Ved teacher over at the high school who taking over next year so we're excited for that and excited for her to be on board next year uh our next team is girls acros and girls acros finished 5-8 overall they sixth place in the sou suburan conference they received the number five seed um and they went to Bloomington Jefferson they lost a really tight quarterfinal game it was tied um with about halfway through the fourth quarter which or yeah excuse me the fourth quarter which was great uh just didn't end up having enough to to beat him that day but when we kind of talk throughout these uh times when I have the opportunity to talk to you guys we talk about how deep our conferences and in girls lacrosse kind of just illustrates this our number one and two teams in the conference ended up finishing first and second in state this year so just uh you know to be in games and and play in a conference like this is is really special and and girls across was no different so uh on the boys side they finished seven and eight it was tied for fifth place in the conference uh they had the seven seed we unfortunately move from one section to another and to be in the deepest section in the state this year so it's just kind of how the lines get drawn but uh you know we thought we maybe had a a different fate if we were in our old section but wasn't meant to be this year they did beat Minneapolis in the first round before losing to Jefferson uh the one thing I can tell you is if you want to show progress so we played Jefferson our first game of the season lost 11 to one wasn't really a game second round of playoffs we were tied with 3 minutes to go so it just uh shows where our kids came from and where our coaching staff was so our team was led by Landon Tower Jake Marshall and Zack doour which a few of them will be back next year Jake will be moving on so and our final uh team that I'm talking about tonight at least is our tennis team and our tennis team had a very good season they finished in the top half of the conference uh they received the two seed in the South uh subsection they beat Hutchinson and man East uh before losing to the eventual section champion in Eden Prairie uh on the individual side we did have a couple uh gentlemen who finished with medals around their neck an finished in third place in the singles and then our doubles pair of Alexi Houston and AD and adap uh finished in fourth place so just a really fun season for them they end up playing their section tournament all down at gustavis so that was at the end of May and they're actually inside because it was too hot to play outside which is odd to say um during the Spring season but uh it's a really fun fun time for them so that's the boys tennis group so with that I believe that is all I'm going to speak about tonight and then we are going to introduce our uh state champion boys volleyball team and I believe that coach uh Christof leming is GNA have the few words so I'll go grab real quick thank [Music] you all right [Music] uh maybe as they uh just at the end yeah so they all just come on yep then they can where would you like the team the cam there you let's go boys to the wall to the wall [Music] the don't worry about the TV it's okay [Music] all right well thank you so much I am christop leming I'm Christ leming and I am the head boys volleyball coach for your very own CH boys volleyball team and I've been coaching here in Shak as assistant girls coach since 2007 so um we've got a great crew which I'll introduce in just a minute um we just so excited for what we accomplished this year here what we have been able to do in in Shaka and this none of this could happened without the support of all the administrators and all of the coaches and fans and parents and then the list goes on and on um but uh just a couple a little bit of the background we've got a lot of seniors on our team we have nine seniors um they're not all here but raise your hand if you're a senior a graduated graduate I should say and we've got five seniors that are coming back up or no not five raise your hand if you're going to be a senior okay and then we got our new Junior yeah yeah so and um so we've got we have a really experienced group that have been playing most of them since the beginning of when we started Bo volleyball in um right around in 2018 was our first year not these guys were not there that first year but they've been um a part of this program since a lot of them since they were younger maybe even and Grant started when he was a seventh grader even for us and um so we've been growing this program for a long time and they've been doing a lot of extra things outside of just our season um playing in Club season playing with our shaki local Club group um doing a lot of we this year we did a lot of weight training with um the training House program which was great for our our guys they were here for they did fall um winter and spring and I think those things just made a huge difference and so we are really excited to be able to represent Shak p in the state tournament that had was held in Shaka um for the fifth year this year Jenny Kill Kelly is my cohort with all the stuff that goes on with Minnesota boys volleyball here in the state of Minnesota she and I have um worked since 2018 along with a whole slew of people to um try to bring volleyball to the state of Minnesota and Jenny's Jenny's children have been through the whole school system all three of her kids and uh she's been instrumental in everything we do with u all of our boys volleyball booster clubs our girls volleyball stuff so the two of us have worked kind of to grow that position and then our assistant coach SL Forman she is a former head coach of another um another girls volleball program we were lucky enough to have her um join us and um bring a head coat you know we have all this head coaching experience to to our team so that was really really uh a great option to have and and then we have our a former player student who's also been coaching Bren P who has can't come back and she's helped do all of our social media and she helps coach with the JB and helps coach everything out here so we've got a great group of of people and we're really really excited to have accomplished what we did and be moving forward for the next year to keep working at having some sort of a what we consider a bable dynasty here in sh so um thank you I don't you guys don't you want to say just heartfelt thank you especially this boys volleyball wouldn't have come to Minnesota either without the help of Matt and Mike I mean Christy Peterson also was a part of few different types of um if I missed anybody I truly truly apologize but it it has been quite um humbling and just very proud to be from this district and um topnotch we've been working with a lot a lot of different administrations and a lot of different schools districts and we are incredibly lucky remember I what I say to you guys every time when you see these guys you need to go these are the guys we talk about all the time that you need to be thankful for what you guys what you guys have so thank you thank you yeah and we had for those of you that weren't at the state tournament it was exciting it was a crazy crazy time and um the day of our we had semi-finals and finals and we had a crazy match and in the four set our one of our Setters went down sprained his ankle so we had to then re regroup for the next for the championship and uh went through all that and had a few other crazy things that happened during the match and it was it was just point by point point point Matt panson was there it was packed um full of people and one of the more exciting matches that we've seen in a lot of lot of lot of games not just not just boys but girls as well and we ended up on top in the fifth set 1513 so it was intense and exciting and uh we're just so happy we got to play our home court too so thank you so much for acknowledging this guys we're going to I'm going to we're going to give you guys each um a certificate and so Jenny do you want to just read off their name and they get that minky get picture CHR you want take a picture of okay stand right over there okay go t Tony Cody [Music] kale fer Bron Owen Francis Owen and Francis were our captains this year's V and I think that is we have here so got we I think we're missing like missing three four four people and our managers and um uh just I want to thank again the parents they've been incredibly supportive and my family my son is on this team my husband has put up with a lot of volleyball for a long time so um I just want to say thank you to them too and congrats you guys for everything there yeah everyone together thank you so much thank you it's been a lot of fun next on our agenda is item 3.3 uh we have our assistant superintendent Jim mosich to present about the reunification training exercise yes uh if you Gally want to come on up uh we have a group of First Responders and uh School District staff here tonight um you've heard a lot about reunification uh which is the act of if a school were to become if a school were to become incapacitated and we were uh needing to get a group of students home um without the use of that school uh reification is a uh A system that is uh nationally nationally recognized um for for getting students reunited with their families um it's something that we as a school district have been working on for two plus years um plans were in motion before I took this position and through the support of these ladies and gentlemen um and many others on June 20th we were able to uh run a full reunification drill and I would like to uh we had over 100 volunteers um we had um observers from places like new prey uh Mr bber representative bber was here in his other job that day as a as a building principal we had uh people observing from uh new CRA uh belplane um Jordan and also from Prior Lake um and these are uh this would be our core team of of people and First Responders from our community who not only helped us plan that day but pull that day off and will remain in contact as we keep our reunification plant fresh and on the on the front burner so with us tonight uh starting on the far end we have Captain Scott hos from the Scott County Sheriff's Office we have Captain Derek Nordman from the Shak Police Department we have our new fire chief Mike Nelson uh we have now retired uh officer Canon Christian who is also our first uh security coordinator you'll be hearing from him shortly and Tracy corer who runs our health services but uh these five people with the support of Tiffany Olen and many others uh have put together a truly incredible plan that we should all feel very fortunate and uh good to have and having these folks here tonight just highlight the incredible partnership that we as a school district have um both with the Shaka community and Scott County at large so would like to thank them for their role in putting together our reunification plan chair Smith may I add just a couple um I would like to say too um mrus did a great job but I get to sit as Jim did in countless meetings with this group and many others that weren't here um and it's I have to remember I got to call you by the right name but Scott there not I shoulder but both captains and many others especially Canon and Tracy I me we're talking 40 plus hours on top of the 40 plus hour jobs that they were already doing in the attention the detail and the openness and there was no rank at the tables um they were just so helpful and I feel so fortunate to be in a district where we know that we are doing everything we can on top of our day job so I also want to thank this group because it was pretty incredible this sit at the table with that group and many others and just see their commitment to our community it wasn't a shaky thing it wasn't a py thing fire thing it was an us thing and they did a great job so thank you yeah I I just want to Echo a lot of the sentiments that Jim and Tiffany shared but from my perspective you know uh and you might go well it's a saber it's on the saber Pride part of the the agenda and that's intentional because you know we're highlighting some exceptional things that happened this year and in our community and the work done with this and the collaborative nature of that work and the Partnerships with you know all all the different entities you know the Scott County folks and Shak fire and Shak PD and our own staff and just an amazing amazing collaboration and to to have kind of a firsthand look at the unbelievable we should have that flowchart Again The Unbelievable preparation and detail and thought you know and just really you know for the just in case you know if you if you have a you know the heat goes out in the building or something like that where you you can't you can't run school that day um I know we have a way better handle on it and I just I was just really proud to be part of our community and our staff that day and I was an observer and uh just thank you thank you for for being great Partners thank you for uh helping build a stronger Community very very very appreciated we do have a quick highlight reel of just that day is on a for video but you can see some visual highlights [Music] [Music] it representative of District 54b which includes a piece of chock B in addition to uh to other areas uh welcome Ben thank you for being here welcome you said distinguish yes and I started looking around for something so um well thanks for for inviting me back again this year um you know so my name is Ben Baker I have a per to represent 54b that doesn't mean anything to probably anyone in the room um so um well good but um so from a shaki standpoint it's um the dean like little bit of the Dean Lakes area and then Jackson Louisville Township but I I represent uh the city of Jordan Prior Lake part of Shak in the surrounding townships so uh pleasure to be with you tonight and um I wanted Jim stole my thunder just to remind you my normal job is I'm a middle school principal and I was actually at the reunification training in that role and I would just Echo fantastic job I mean just amazing work and and when we debriefed as our team well the first thing we talked about is we'd like to hire you but guessing sh he's not willing to do that um but then you know from a facility standpoint and but but what really jumped out was just the Partnerships and you had that on the slide about how the community really came together and and multiple stakeholders and and really I think in a large picture perspective if we did more of that in education we would be in a much better place so um I want to thank you uh for serving in a role as a Schoolboard member I'm sure you never get phone calls you never get stopped at the grocery store or when you're out and about about whatever the topic may be so so thank you and and and I I I think I've said this before but I truly think a local school board position is one of the more difficult locally elected uh positions it's just so personal to so many people so thank you for for doing that um I talked about Partnerships and and and and I would just Echo and just really ask you moving forward if there is something that a decision that I make uh a vote I take that you don't like I want you to pick up the phone and call me even if I don't represent you in particular I do represent a portion of Shak andp so in your school board capacity and superintendent Redmond um you know and Jim thank you so much you know i' I've really enjoyed just Frank honest conversations in uh in the office so just to highlight kind of big picture um the 23 legislative session you know we heard a lot about historic funding 4 and two on the formula cross subsidy those were those were good things for districts um some some investments in in literacy that's a good thing but we heard a lot about mandates and and how at the legislature we were tying your hands and and one of the themes that I heard over and over uh from you know frankly Educators across the State teachers administrators superintendents School Board is is just back off the Mandate like like Let Us control things and make the decisions that are best for Shack year for Jordan or for Prior Lake um so in this last session that was kind of the mindset going in like okay let's let's look at what we we did last year and how do we improve those things and and there are some good things like I I want to be very transparent we did some additional funding for the read act if you're not aware half of the kids across the state of Minnesota um don't read at grade level that's a that's a problem a significant problem that we need to uh make an investment to address address that and I look at that and maybe I'm biased because of my education background but I see investments in literacy very very similar to the investment in the 169 282 uh interchange in Jordan it's an investment in infrastructure for our future so that's a good thing um just today uh Heather Keeler uh she represents the Morehead uh area and and I represent Jordan we worked together on a bill to add address um attendance truen attendance and treny and and it's I can tell you the story about how it all came about but that's an example of bipartisan work I'm a republican she's a Democrat and she had an idea and and I had an idea and we were in committee discussing it and and she said hey Ben let's sit down and let's have a conversation about this and what came out of that is basically she took my idea and it's a very basic idea of let's study this issue so that we don't just spend a a bunch of money we don't spend a bunch of time to not address the root cause of the issue so today we had our first attendance and treny study group meeting uh and then on August 12th we have um our second meeting where different stakeholders so if you guys would like to come because you you guys are doing a good job tracking data and just share what you're doing um I I would invite that but that's an example you know we hear so much and that that things are so divided and so ugly um but you know I I give representa keer a ton of credit for reaching out she wouldn't have had to do that she could have gotten her bill passed and we would have spent money on something that would to address the root cause and then she could have went back to Morehead and said look at what I did I got this bill passed to address this but she wanted to address the root cause so I just give her a lot of credit um and then on the house floor the um they all the uh the majority party took one of my amendments to really clarify for parents that they have the right to get MCA data as soon as possible there's if if you would go ask probably every building principal there would be different feelings and maybe you guys do a better job of training your staff but like there's just as I've talked with my principal colleagues there's just a lot of uncertainty um and people don't want to do the wrong thing so on the house floor they they took my amendment to just clarify that parents have the right to the data uh right away and then we fixed two issues um the school resource officer issue was was significant across the state uh here in chaky and in Jordan we had our school resource officers all along Prior Lake did not it's just a different of perspective uh but it just shows that when we don't listen to the stakeholders and get them in the room we get things wrong uh so we finally fixed that issue uh and then we we heard significantly from from Educators that the react is good but it's wul underfunded so we we did some more funding for that as well um you know I I'd be remissed if I didn't say the the bill that I was the chief office author of actually had 250 million for the read act but um you know the the 118 million um we'll we'll we'll have to work with that that we that we passed so I think when I look at this session coming up um you know regardless of who's in control my focus is going to continue to be to find Common Sense solutions to empower you to make decisions that are best for because you know what what's in Jordan or Prior Lake you have different needs still within 54b you still have different needs and if we if we top down mandate things we're tying your hands um so we're going to continue to do that um you know and and heard that over overwhelmingly um that we needed to do that and I think is if we do that it'll free up some of the funding for you to be able to address your issues I'm already hearing um from different constituents that that just the inflationary index tying the the formula to inflation isn't going to be enough to overcome some of the the hurdles so we you know we have to look at within the the parameters that we have how we're going to do that and in my opinion we're foolish if we don't back off on some of those mandates so local control is going to continue to be a high priority uh literacy is going to continue to be a high priority and then providing that funding and flexibility U for you guys I've talked a lot um and and really what I want to do is hear from you about about how I can better serve the Shak andp Community even if it's just a little bit so yeah I have a quick question for you um thank you for the work you do Sy um um you guys agree with um the state representatives to give uh the local to handle because they are the one know better than anybody do you guys both bodies agree uh that or you guys are different that's a loaded question um sry about that yeah no I mean and I'll just be honest and say that that there are some who feel like um there are some who feel that they know better than you do at the legislature so uh and and I early on in in session um and you can go back and watch the tape and different Representatives on the education committees talk about their experience in school and um it was interesting how not all but some people had a very negative School experience so then how they're interpreting bills is based off of their negative experience in school and and you know I I had great teachers and I had you know people that I didn't click with like that's just life but I can tell you right now education is very very different you know 5 years ago than it is today so to to say that you know we should be legislative and making laws based off of our experience 10 20 30 years ago in my opinion is shortsighted and foolish so um and I what I would ask you to do and and maybe push you a little bit is if someone is not representing the community um and representing their party more then that's a problem like there were multiple times that I uh especially around this housing Bill there was there was bipartisan support and bipartisan opposition so it wasn't a republican Democrat issue but um that's where I just looked back to my community and just said okay the my constituents what do you think about this and how does this impact our community and um I think we we need to do a better job of that thank [Music] you Mr representative a question for you and thank you for calling out the funding for the re act there was certainly you know a lot of discussion around that uh and funding being near and dear to that conversation in our Bo packet tonight is something having to do with a a projects Levy what we call our Tech Levy and language in the law says it's got to be a voter approved uh Levy to renew it um and and that was 10 years ago when we initiated this one could argue that technology was discretionary a decade ago I don't know that there'll be anyone in the room that says technology is not only you know mandatory from a learning experience but just safe schools cyber security all of those things do you have a perspective on changing the language to allow districts to renew without having to go you know back to the community yeah we've talked about that so and we passed it in the last uh the 23 vium to allow districts to do it but this one isn't isn't included corre so um yeah I mean I think that's a topic of conversation we need to have and and and it gets into the pros and cons of of you know do you allow you know a local board to to Levy that that one side says you know school districts are giving being you know P per pupil formula Aid um but yeah I mean really as a local control person we need to trust our local JS to make the decision that our best and then if the community doesn't want that then they're going to they're going to speak and and go from there so it's it's um and that's honestly not a popular opinion within the Republican circles like democracy is hard you should have to go out and do that I just my struggle with that like I I agree with that but honestly my struggle with it is um there's a lot of things that have to be done within the school day with a limited set of resources so if it's an offe election and you're not running it it's expensive and it's and and the expense is one thing but it's more the human resourcing cost that get played into it so that's the conversation that we have that I have with some of my cols thank you I just I'm curious you know talk about mandates in like the aggregate um would there be what any specific mandates you'd be looking at reversing in the next bium oh boy um well the the discipline mandates are are you know the most that was the most frustrating part of session for me is when we were um we as as Educators were painted as just horrific that we were hurting and abusing kids like to to sit there and listen to that and and it goes back to your question about legislating off of what happened 20 years ago I mean I could tell all kinds of stories about what you know different people did to me and and but it's when we legislate that way and then we're making policy today based off of Impressions from years ago um it's it's just wrong and then what the justification for the the non-exclusionary discipline was uh a human rights report about um about suspension rates especially of of students of color and an administrators don't want to suspend kids they just don't want to because the kid isn't in class learning if they're suspended from school but what we've done especially with the K3 ban on suspension is the kid has to go somewhere so the kids are going back into class or in a a processing room um but even for that kids dignity they need to have a place where they can process and deescalate um and all of that was was just excluded because people were just bent on we're going to pass this piece of legislation because it's the right thing to do because and we heard you know multiple stories that were frankly the same story multiple times in committee and and it was frustrating and we had uh two principles one of them I worked with I was her assistant principal Tes she was the Middle School assistant for the Middle School principal of the year uh and then we had an elementary principal of the Year from Northfield testify and just say can you just please trust us to do our jobs please trust us and um and it passed you know party line vote and it was you know it it's it's not making School safer and it's not um supporting teachers because the kids have to go somewhere so that is that's one thing probably the most frustrating uh thing that was passed last year and it was only about $150,000 but it's more the principle of it that I just it just infuriates me is we added a director of Library services at the Department of Education okay so then the um the the funding for that came from dollars that schools were already given so we actually cut the budget uh literacy incentiv a it's called that that revenue for to fund that position at the department came out of literacy instead of 8 across the so not only did we not listen to schools and reduce the mandates um we said you know what we're going to add another position at the department of Ed so that we can have someone oversee library programs across the state I don't even have a librarian in my middle school like we have one across our district in Jordan and we're going to have a we're going to have someone at the department to manage libraries it's just illogical so if you know know I would look at all of the increase at the department and I would say come up a list of what you're cutting because if if we don't make some reductions um you know then it's it's going to happen here at this table so I think the department should have to play a role in that there's 52 about about 52 A5 million dollar to nonprofit groups if we can't take care of our local schools then we should shouldn't be funding nonprofits in my in my mind so yeah it was about about 33 million increase at the department so that would be where I would start yeah first of all just want to thank you for taking time and and being being here with us tonight and uh and I I think I've shared this with the board members really appreciate your accessibility you know you you always get back to us uh often immediately um you know and I I do appreciate it and and what you said early on was really true you know uh representative bakeberg is somebody that we can have Frank discussions we're not going to agree on everything uh but I always learn when I have those discussions and and they're pretty regular so really really appreciate uh how in tune you are to uh to our district to the district you serve and uh and I think that's the the key word that you do truly see this as service to our community and uh to the state in a greater way so thank you and thank you for taking time out of a a very very busy schedule got me out of watching The Bachelor at home I'm not sure which one it is so thank you and call any time honestly awesome thank you next on our agenda is item 7.2 uh safe schools safe communities uh District steering committee latest updates and here to present again is is our assistant superintendent Jim Pa invite uh our new safety coordinator K Christensen to to join me for this and thank you chair Smith Dr REM members of the board this is our our annual update on on where we are at with safe schools and safe communities and um as with everything we do in our district um our crisis and safety work as you can see aligns with our compelling vision and making sure that we have systems and structure in place that work for every student and and will keep every student safe while they are in our in our presence um just to review a little bit about uh the structure of our crisis team here in shaki and the way things work and to let you know a little bit um about where uh Canon will fit into our it's weird calling you Canon not officer Christian so that's be adjustment uh and by the way Jordan can't hire you or anyone else you um but we are we are very fortunate to have Canon moving into the role of safety coordinator in our district and we were able to attain this by moving from four school resource officers down to three so that kept uh the position cost neutral we did that in partnership with both the high school administrative team that we talked to and asked them how things would work if we were uh with one less SRO and and they indicated that uh daily operations would continue as usual Canon will be officed out of the high school so we will still have two safety professionals on site one uh in uniform one not in uniform um but Canon's uh Position will be to oversee all of the coordination of all of our safety programming districtwide and it's a lot more than just reunification and having a dedicated person who can carry out this role is going to be a a huge step forward for us uh as you can see we have a crisis team made up of uh of Administrators uh teachers um and other uh staff members such as technology buildings and grounds the people that play a sort of a Frontline role in in making sure that all of our systems are are are safe and secure um we meet quarterly uh we meet with each of our buildings quarterly each of our buildings has a uh safety team that meet quarterly so it's a real it's a real uh situation where we we start with our information up here uh we we grind it all the way down into the buildings make sure that we um are are meeting the needs of the individual buildings um we take their feedback and then we look at what our next steps in making sure that all of our all of our schools and all of our sites are um safe and secure um you can see uh you know there's Canon's some of Canon's first 30 days I was having a conversation with he and the two police captains I I think he's going to be extremely busy these first couple of years in this position as we continue to find areas such as reunification that we can build out to only enhance the experience for all of our students and families and make sure that school is that safe supportive place that we want it to be uh these are our SRO you you hear a lot about them can't say enough about our partnership with the Shak P Police Department starting with Chief Kate and and moving um all the way through uh officer Santos will be moving from the high school over to East to take Canon's position um and then officers Kirch bom and Kern will be back in their roles that there were a year ago uh you know so stearing committee highlights um you know looking at our community survey safety is the most frequently mentioned uh Thing by by the folks who trust our their their children with us um and that's why we make sure that we have uh plans um uh plans in place for for anything that we can think of that could potentially come up um during a school day during a a school year and a lot of those plans are in fact um supported by our capital projects Levy um which which we also will continue to have conversations about uh these are some of the highlights uh that uh that the committee accomplished that the group accomplished last year on the right hand side please notice our district crisis and safety manual um we do have a manual that all of our building administrators and teachers um have digital copies of um we have plans in there for everything um and it's it's something that uh we we look forward to sharing with you in the wrap this week so that you can can look through the level of preparedness and and uh the hours that many people um from our health services to our SRO to our Communications Department have put into this so that in the event something happens whether it be a an unfortunate event with a staff member or a student um you know we can go to this book and immediately see what the plans are who needs to be involved um and and really follow through with it uh when you when you look up here um just a number of big wins in the last last year the legislature did pass some AED mandates we already meet those mandates we were the first heart safe School District in the State uh you know I'm a big consumer of heart safe stuff so I I approve of that in a big way um you know little things too like visitor badge adjustments um someday when you're visiting a school you may see someone walking around with an ID badge similar to this except theirs is green um our vendors haven't had ID badges when they're in building so uh working with edet we reached out to every vendor asked for a list of people who would be in and out of our buildings ran them all through background checks now they all have badges they don't have to check in when they get there um it's it's little things like that that make our schools safer um and and more accessible and again you can you can see all of the work that we've done from uh you know CPR training to the vulnerability assessments that we do of our building um and again when we talk about the role of canid having a full-time person who can just do vulnerability assessments of all of our sites um you know both our our schools but then the other places that we we have students like a bond field or or like a graduation ceremony where we can really um you know continue to wrap our heads around what's going well and where we can continue to grow and improve with that I'm going to I'm going to let Canon talk to you a little bit about last year's huge undertaking which was reunification and obviously we we just got done honoring many of our Community Partners who supported this but can talk a little bit about the work that went into um getting that day um in place and also what the long-term benefits of having the reunification plan in place are thank you um first of all thank you for having me um I have been retired for almost two months now I highly recommend it looking for something um but I'm really excited to get back into the schools and um grateful for the opportunity to be with the district and and trying to make a difference so this was this was our big June 20th event um I thought it went awesome it was it was so good um such positive experience for everybody all the feedback we got was incredible um and the the important thing to remember that we had a lot of questions about you know our scenario was a gas leak um and people ask what if it was something bigger what if it was something different the great thing about this program prr that we put together is we can make it bigger or smaller depending on the event but the the way that it works doesn't change so we can add more people for a bigger event or less people for a smaller event so we're we're able to adapt to any crisis that's given to us so I feel that as a district we are prepared for any emergency or unforeseen situation and and be able to re reunify those students with their Guardians so super excited about that we worked with the I love you guys Foundation um it's just incredible and it's it's a foundation that's constantly changing and expanding they're always looking at different ways what's going on in the communities out there and how can we adapt to work with the Ever Changing environment that we're given so we're going to keep working with them we're going to keep looking at how that changes and what we can change what we can change from their system to better work in our community uh with our environment you know they're out in Colorado and we have different situations happening here in Minnesota so we're going to adapt and change and continue to work with them to make the best system that works for our students and our staff here in Shak we're going to continue to work with Scott County the fire department um they're invaluable Scott hos that's his job with the county is Emergency Management so um I'm going to continue to work closely with him so we're ready for any scenario part of we've talked about before um the Shak school district is has plans to assist the community in the event of a community emergency so I'll continue to work with them on those plans going forward we had the why and how training with the staff we went took them all through first the why training on why we reification then the how training it was awesome it was great but they all walked out of there a little nervous about what reunification was then we had the reun we had the slow walk through on June 7th where they all went to the high school and they stood in their position this is where my job is going to happen and this is what's going to happen we were a little more comfortable after that and then we had the W the scenario when we did the scenario on the 20th and they were able to see how their position related to the parents to the students to everything that was going on and I think after that I think a lot of lot of them walked out of there feeling a lot more comfortable about where their job and how it fit into the whole system then one really important thing is we asked we gave all of them a survey we gave um people that were just watching a survey we gave the students the volunteers they all got a survey and all all the staff members that were working they all got a survey so now going forward our next step is to evaluate what was the overall impression of the reunification process 94% that's awesome right but now let's look at how how can we improve that how can we make that better going forward that's my son there he participated so proud of him thankfully you came to sh me to help out and what's next how can we sufficiently support and go forward so we're going to meet as a team coming up and we're going to analyze all the results of this survey and look at what went good what went bad what we can change what we can improve on and come up with a better plan going forward part of all of this is our our next step will be letting the public know what our plan is and a lot of this video kind of shows some of that it lets the public know the parents the Guardians that we have a plan right that safety aspect of parents want their kids to be safe in school this plan going forward is to let the public know that we have this plan it's in place um this video kind of shows what the scenario was and kind of get that word out there to to give that better feeling that their their kids are safe in the school and and we have a plan in place going forward so moving moving ahead uh one of our enhancements for this year is our crisis and safety information line um if people ever have questions or things that they would like to report uh this will be available starting this fall and looking at the next slide um know when when we talk about what is next um the beauty of having canon in this position is a big part of his job will be um just continuing to enhance our site safety plans I mentioned those those monthly site uh safety meetings that every principal holds Canon will be attending um every one of those at each site throughout the year so that he can come back and talk about the specific needs of specific buildings and support all of us in taking the next steps um just to again to make sure that our sites are as secure as possible POS um we we've heard there are a lot of Grant funds out there uh a lot that go unclaimed um so what part of what we are hoping to do is identify grants that can support our district from a crisis and safety position and uh that is also something that candid will be will be working on as as he settles into his position again um you know we're very fortunate to have the partners that we have um I I feel you know unbelievably blessed to be able to pick up the phone and Captain ner will you know answer it on a Friday morning and we can talk through the football game that Friday night and make sure that we have the best plan in place that we possibly can but that'll but it'll also be um having this position will allow us to even cultivate those relationships more um Canon knows these people he's worked with these people he knows what questions to ask um and again it's amazing the support that is out there for us when we when we just ask um we're going to continue uh as I mentioned before to try to enhance our offsite Safety and Security um measures so that we're we're sure that when our students are participating in activities that aren't maybe on our grounds um that we have plans in the event something were to go wrong um reunification is not something that you do and put on a shelf and let it collect dust um and talking with even Prairie and Prior Lake that have reunification plans they actually have weekly meetings where those plans are reviewed and different stakeholders are brought in um so they're they're constantly updating and again um we we want to continue to collaborate with our Tech technology buildings and grounds and Communications Health Services to make sure that we're all on the same page um and and just ready for whatever might come down the road so um I don't know if there are any questions about reunification or uh anything crisis and safety related but we'd be happy to take those question do you have any hour each year to get recertified or hours no it's uh like they like for the I love you guys Foundation type stuff yeah no they're one of their great programs is they say everything on their website is free you don't doesn't even cost an email so we're just basically using their their system so we're free to change and use what we want as we need yeah it's a great system I I wish I could have uh there to volunteer that day I I uh really wanted to see it in action but it sounds like it was uh just an amazing uh event on the 20th so it's very impressive well thank you sir we look forward to you starting your new job on Thursday thank you thank you thanks guys and Jim is going to stay put and uh present on our next topic item 7.3 the 2024 annual Leadership Retreat yes so as you uh as I think you all know each year we do have a Leadership Retreat not only for our principls but for our directors assistant directors Etc um we met in late June for for three days um once again with the idea of how do we uh continue to support our compelling Vision the board's uh the board's goals um and how do we just build our our internal leadership capacity uh this is our opening slide on an annual basis at our at our Leadership Retreat um you know June is a great time to reflect after a long school year um when you look at all the other bullet points it leads us to the bottom where what we really want our leaders who will take action um constantly updating systems constantly updating structures constantly making sure that we are providing the absolute um best we can in the in the ways of both instructional and systems leadership for all of our students and families uh this is something uh that if you want to look at more in your own time feel free but these are our agendas and you can you can still scan the uh scan the codes and you can you can get greater depth and detail about each of the different activities that we did uh the first two days were all of our senior leaders um day three we broke um into Elementary and secondary administrative groups with Nica Sumer and Sarah wenberg um leading those groups um on the specific topics that you can see which are uh the continued refinement of the elementary school day um and secondary assessment for learning so key topics if you were to to dig deeper into those agendas um you know we we like to say that uh the the number one uh way that we can tell what you value is how you spend your time um so we asked our leaders to all perform a Time study um and figure out where we really are spending our time um and and within that asking what are the acts that we do because we've always done them and what are the highest leverage acts from which we get the greatest returns and we ask people um as they're building out their plans for this year to really try to focus on those High leverage activities and I think that um having that time and space for people to communicate about how they were spending their time was extremely uh beneficial um we are also very fortunate again in the name of partnership to have a number of Community Partners come in and meet with us uh we actually had Yanik from entr who uh gave about a two-hour presentation about Ai and how entrust uses AI but then also really challenging our thinking about how we as a school district are uh getting our students ready uh for jobs that are going to involve AI um you know it's it's a very daunting thing and at the same time it's it's definitely where we're heading and we need to adjust our teaching practices to match and to have a guest speaker from The Real World come in and talk about the day-to-day applications of it was extraordinarily beneficial uh we also had a number of U of uh staff members from the city of Shaka um and just other community groups that really shared with us what's going on in this community because one of the one of the things we really want is for all of our leaders to be informed um the last thing we want are principles directors Etc saying I don't know um they might they might need to say I'll get back to you on that but we also think it's critical that they know and be engaged in what's going on in our community so that when when they're having conversations when they're leading meetings they can always speak in educated ways um we also talked a little bit about the site planning process uh which we're going to uh be be altering a little bit this year to try to put more of a focus on teacher actions and how do we provide professional development to change teacher actions to better support student growth um and we also want to see our site plans this year have data that can be measured in real time so that we're not waiting six months for MCA scores to come back and then find out whether we did or didn't do the job we want to be looking at at data that's taking place that day or that week and and figure out if we are are hitting our marks and last but not least um you know as I mentioned we talked a little bit about uh we talked a lot about communication one piece of that was how do we communicate across uh across cultures um you know what are we doing to to listen to our students we actually had some great student voice videos um in which students talked about their experiences within our schools so that our leaders um you know could could reflect on that and and figure out how are we communicating with all of our students and all of our stakeholders uh again everything that we did that day I would over the course of those three days I would say uh connect back to this this group's vision and priorities um we we made sure that we were very explicit um in tying our different activities back to what it is the board has charged us to do and I think most importantly our our one of the next steps because leadership Retreats can can be a nice you know they're they're a nice relaxing opportunity to get away to get off site but really what are we going to do and how is this going to make us better um as you can see we will continue with our monthly instructional leadership meetings and our monthly systems meetings um I would also say our administrators have gotten much better at having their own PLC process our elementary administrators and secondary administrators both have plc's they're in buildings they're doing walkthroughs they're having real ation about what teachers are doing in classrooms so that we can make sure that we that we support that and our our principl also much like our teachers all have professional growth plans each principal has a growth plan and those are also tied back to the uh the vision and priorities of of this board um I think that you uh can expect to see leaders back at this table throughout the year as you have the last two years talking about your vision and priorities talking about how we're implementing things um such as assment for learning of the redact you know how is the elementary scheduling committee um moving along and what changes might they be making in the future so um I think that the actions that you see at this table um will be directly tied back to the work that we did at our our 3day Leadership Retreat and again I open it up to any questions question and I think it's exceptional work I think it speaks volumes just to the dedication continue to develop staff and make that a priority you know you talk about you know measuring that which drives a success right how do we learn from what works or what what are we doing just to you know status quo do you have any like you know what we call like key performance indicators or measures to say like objectively that's what's what that's what good looks like yes um at the secondary level and I think you've seen this over the past few years um we do a lot of work around passing rates and when we talk about um you know uh data that can be measured in a real time we can we can go on Infinite Campus and we can check out a school's passing rate in a matter of minutes and our our middle schools and our high school they're they're all over that and and they're communicating that and their staff meetings they're communicating that and their newsletters um they're really on top of it attendance is another one I mean you heard representative bakeberg talk about the fact that attendance has kind of become a nationwide challenge right now again attendance is something that um you know we feel like we do have some control over that because the better the relationships you goild with the students the more likely they are to come to school on a regular basis so we can measure that um at the elementary level we have a number of different reading measures we have fast Bridge C and we're really pushing for people um to to be looking at those specific things because it is real time it's not the MCA test score that comes sometime in August and you you know half the time when I was a teacher I could barely remember the kids that took the test because it had been 5 months since the test had been taken 3 months since I'd seen them so we really want people focused on the kids in front of them and yes I I do believe we have measures that we can we can look to thank you thank you back to this thank you next on our agenda is item 7.4 School Board election update and here present is Tiffany Wilson director of communications and strategic development may I present from the seat chairi seems efficient um this is a very brief update just to ensure we're we're sharing all the information that is out there but uh starting tomorrow and what you see on the screen here is a page that outlines this information as well um but we do have uh the three Schoolboard uh seats that are available for four years each and that you know on June 24th the resolution was called and roll call approved by all that were present to be able to have this on the general election ballot so beginning tomorrow uh and that starts at 8:00 a.m. and through Tuesday August 13th at 5:00 p.m. candidates are able to submit their Affidavit of candidacy form to be on that ballot for the school board election this page outlines the terms uh but the most simplest way to say it is the Affidavit of canedy form is is the main piece of paperwork that needs to be filled out in order to do that in order to be a um legal requirements to run for a school board you can see the outline on here there's terms 1 through six that outline both when it comes to age where you need to live um if they are a present member of the district and also if they are a staff member and how much they make as a present staff member some of those high level items are outlined here but from a filing perspective it does have to be submitted tomorrow uh through August 13th and then there's a 48h hour period to withdraw in a specific form to do that and then from there we submit to the county to be able to have those names on the ballot so all of that is done here at the district office and then we work uh with the county to be able to submit and the city's aware well of anyone that provides that affidavit uh but that is the only process that we handle here simply the filing everything else is done through the standard general election process uh and I'd be happy to answer any questions but we wanted to share this just so folks could understand here on the school board this process kicks off tomorrow and all the information is outlined here I just have a point of clarification so the office or what time is it between 85 every day uh from tomorrow through the 13th yes thank you for asking that and I can clarifies but we've actually adjusted our hours here at the district office so that folks can properly file so it is Monday through Friday 8 to 5 during that period and it's $2 it is $2 correct cash or check no card and that goes into a special account that we use with Bill mini that is simply for paper and filing fees associated with the work we do here it has to be in person you can mail there's an option that notes on here that you can mail it does go to the district office but there is notary requirements on that affidavit a candidacy and those terms have to be followed accordingly it's best to do it in person uh but there is the option to submit it by mail but then we have the other pieces with the cash or check but we have to a well that if there's any issues getting district office it does need to be received time as well notk any other questions that answer good luck to everybody who uh decides to run it is uh I'll just leave it at that it's a pleasure so enjoy if you run it's fun to run thank you Tiffany next on our agenda is item 7.5 a reading of policies and Chad Johnson will present so this is our um first reading of our next slate of policy updates um one thing to note is uh if you open up the the policy update list you'll see at the top that this first about two pages worth of updates um qualify for uh one meeting adoption um we're going to do two just because the way that our meetings are scheduled but basically because they are not substantive changes we can adopt them in one meeting um but uh the other thing is um I try to give a quick summary of what all of these things are tiffany tries real hard to follow me because I talk really fast when I do that I've noticed the screen is like anyway um there's way too many to even touch on them all just suffice to say that the first so the first few dozen are again not substantial changes um there are um in the annual updates um those are a bit longer and then the last one on the list um 522 um is uh entire restructuring of the previous policy due to um legal changes around Title 9 um so there's not a um there's not like a uh what am I trying to say uh where it shows the uh the edits in line that you can compare to the previous one the entire document has changed so uh and there's a a letter from msda giving some background information about that so we'll probably need some time on our own to uh review these before we meet again um just because there are so many in can you uh Define WB WF Workforce okay thank you so and again it's considered not a substance of change because it's just taking out the phrase world's best Workforce um and just replacing it with kind of more generic terminology but then what the definition and goal of what the things are Remains the exact same so it's just taking out that phrase and then just to clarify so everything the majority of these above the annual update section this is the first reading tonight and then we're not going to see these again until the 26th of August when we'll vote whereas the annual update dates we're going to look at again on the 12th yeah okay any other questions thank you CH all right next up is an action item item 8.1 20 20 24 and 25 handbooks and Jim is here to present I don't know what I did to deserve this tonight but uh thank you again uh chair Smith Dr redond members of the board so tonight is our annual updating of the school handbooks and uh just to refresh your memories uh two years ago we had five elementary handbooks two Middle School handbooks a high school handbook um they had a lot of information in them that I would put in the category of they belong on a website not in a handbook because they change an update frequently um and quite frankly not all of our handbooks were alied so that was just a small problem a year ago uh we had our principal sit down uh the elementaries came up with a an elementary handbook that all five of our buildings now follow our middle schools got theirs to a similar place where we now have one Middle School handbook and we've always had one high school so that one was a little bit easier um tonight you all should have uh all should have the opportunity to see uh what the red lines and the handbooks were um you know to to talk about it uh really quickly I would say the vast majority of the changes in handbooks this year have to do with student attendance um different uh procedures we have around taking student attendance reporting and recording student attendance um this uh goes back again to some of the things that representative Baker talked about it also goes back to um the fact that we we probably had you know we asked the question is a student uh you know late if they're are they absent if they're 1 minute late 5 minutes late 15 minutes late an hour late and we got five different answers so it was one of those things where it's like we need to start to Define some of these things put them in writing and make sure that we're treating students consistently across the district um the other piece uh the other two pieces I would highlight would be uh the very top line uh we are legally required um per statute to provide the opt out um to any parent for MCA testing in the handbook so the MCA opt out is now being placed in the handbook and then the final piece was the high school change some language around cell phone usage um Etc um nothing profound um I would say it was more of a change in the in the verbage um and really giving uh teachers and administrators more of an ability to tell students during class you know what you need to put the phone away and and we need to be uh focused on what we're we're actually working on right now so I don't know if there are any questions about what I said or any other uh changes in the handbooks um but again I didn't uh see anything that was overly substantial um a lot of it fell into the category of housekeeping I yes so cell phone not using in the class good B so from now on can the use cell phone in the class so the the way the way the high school has written their procedure um cell phones are allowed uh at in the lunchroom they're allowed during passing time but they're not allowed um during class time during class time students are allowed to use their District issued devices so their laptops iPads Etc no cell phones no cell phones unless the teacher gives permission which the teacher can always do okay so the cell phones can be on the person yes just should be put away yes not like sitting like I have mine here different teachers have different uh practices of handling that I've seen everything from uh the calculator Case by the door where I'm sitting in seat three so I put my cell phone in the in the number three bin when I walk in um you know other teachers will say turn them off others will say flip them over it really depends on the teacher and how they decide that they want to police that in their classroom like so many other things that they have to deal with on a daily basis is that an exception they have medical issue I I would say if there's a I mean if there's a medical issue I mean those are being handled all the time I mean we have a number of students with medical issues and um you know student we we went a long time in life without having students with cell phones with medical issues and they were just fine and I think that we can continue to handle those as we have in the [Music] past great thank you Jim so this is an action item I believe oh yes it is thank you I would make the motion to be approved second a motion by Muhammad and a second by Roi discussion seeing none all those in favor I oppos motion carries thank you Jim thank you it's time for another five minutes right all right next another action item so correct me if I forget to vote on this one uh this Our Last Action it 8.2 uh special Schoolboard meeting canvasing election results and Tiffany Olson will present yes so this is another brief item that follows along with the resolutions that were approved at the June 24th meeting um with the legal actions that need to be taken in order to Canvas and and properly uh go through that process after the general election and this is related to the capital projects Levy renewal there does need to be uh a meeting that occurs during a certain period of time uh and in order to do that um It's relatively let's see it's 3 to 10 days after the general election that meeting needs to be held and that's where the results are presented and the school board must take action to approve the canvasing of those results so the proposal here tonight is that the school board approve a special meeting that would be held on Wednesday November 13th that would be held here at the district office uh but this would be at 7:00 a.m. rather than a 600 p.m. meeting this dates coincided with that 3 to 10 days after the general election uh and it's generally a pretty um brief meeting in terms of resources that are there but it follows standard campusing procedures for the school board but it is required that we do have one and the 20124 School Board calendar that was previously approved does not have this on there because the resolution was not qualified at that time so I would be looking for approval is there any reason we're doing it at 7 a.m. instead of say 600 p.m. we we could change that just like I think we've done both we I only remember one we've never done a morning one for this something early in morning for' had a I'd be in favor of evening would that's the consensus oh what if we do six in the morning [Laughter] six not like I'm up but I'm working um I will make a motion to approve this with the change that it is at 6: pm on November 13th oh second all right so we have a motion to move the time to 6 p.m. a motion by Aldrich and a second by Muhammad to move the time to 6 p.m. any discussion on that anyone really really in favor of 7 a.m. I was actually fine with 7: a.m. I can do 6 p.m. too I mean isn't it just like it's like a five minutes it's not very long right yeah I mean we're we're we're basically validating the results of the that the uh the the official the project weby whether pass F yeah but the the people counting the ballots the official poll workers have have done their work by then we're just validating their results so usually a representative from the city election team and County may join them that present that information then it's your choice if you choose to go through the backup but they very clearly present all the the data for you to make that decision to approve which is another reason I think it's better to have it at night instead of at 7 a.m. okay if we have it either so the mo the motion in the second is for 6 p.m. for 6 p.m. any any further discussion on on that so I mean I care I could do both like I'm a early riser so would work all right well we we have the motion for six so let's let's let's vote on that any further discussion all right see none all those in favor I I oppose motion carries well with everybody present 6 6 to zero so now 6m now we'll vote on the amended time to approve or did that that I I made the motion based on 6 p.m. okay do we and do we need a second vote now that it's 6 p.m or are we no are we good yes we we had no original motion for 7 p.m. so fair enough if we had that then we would have had to amend that but we did not so I think we're good devils in the details Jesse does that sound right for City level okay all right we got the city we got the city council blessing we're good thank you thank you Tiffany thank you next on our agenda is an information item item 9.1 capital projects Levy renewal update and Dr Ran will present I was hoping Jim you could take this one for back over there yeah just want to touch base again on the uh technology Levy or the uh capital projects Levy uh and again I think most people probably you know the formal name capital projects Levy most people tend to refer to it as a tech Levy or technology Levy and again uh it's been alluded to earlier in this meeting this is uh I think came up when representative bakeberg was here one of the questions uh Yep this had been approved originally back in 2015 for the maximum allowable time which is a period of 10 years so it is the exact same language it's the same tax rate uh that is on the ballot this November um which makes it uh both a renewal you know asking for an additional 10 years but had there not been an expiration had it continued you know in definitely this continuation would be just as if it moved forward that same previously approved capital projects Levy and we've T touched on this uh and again I I'm doing some layering here kind of in terms of uh the communications where at at the top of that pyramid really it's about safety and it's about critical support technology is embedded everywhere in support of student learning and again if we took that pyramid down we have lots of depth we had Brian roast here not too long ago giving a an update you know an annual report actually it's uh every other every couple of years report um this is an example in our district where since this was approved by the voters that the district has done exactly what they said they were going to do and set out to do and they've kept really good records and great accounting of that as well but often we just tonight kind of top of the pyramid top layer so safety and C iCal support um a lot of feedback through the community conversation uh this late spring safety and a lot of different forms came up as being very important to people as as it typically does in most school districts uh and I think you'll recall that uh you know uh last month the school board uh approved unanimously um a resolution to uh Place uh this capital projects uh it's a special election uh is what was approved but it is held during the same general election as all the other uh all the other things going on on November 5th so it's part of that even though it's a special election resolution it's part of the general election day on November 5th uh you know again reiterating you know this is that renewal of something passed back in 2015 um a little more detail the final year of revenue from what was approved uh in 2015 uh would be collected in the calendar year 2025 for use in the school year 2526 there is a window of when you can bring forward a special election we're within that window TimeWise um and then I think it's also important to point out that if uh if the this Capital Project's Levy uh were not to be renewed by the voters this November or not to be renewed uh and it just was allowed to expire uh the district would no longer receive receive the revenue provided that is currently being used to pay for school safety technology cyber security video security and uh lots of other related things and we will uh we begun as a school district we have an obligation uh to inform our community of of you know what's going on uh and I use that word inform on purpose uh we we are not allowed to be persuasive uh while we're working for the school district we have our own private lives where certainly we can be engaged differently but uh this is really the informative part and there's been a lot of planning uh that's gone on and again you'll you're starting to see some of this it's layered we can go as deep as anybody wants to go uh but there's a whole Myriad of uh you know kind of the the different pieces of that and uh real high quality stuff the constructed feedback group is is doing their job meeting regularly and going yep what about this maybe this would be better and giving really good feedback in a in a lot of ways and as I've said this would be if we're talking layering and you get to that bottom foundational stuff uh there are Live Links they're in board book and you know you click on the uh technology update the technology reports going back to the 2015 fact sheet the 2015 funding sheet there's information about the current capital projects Levy um and certainly we will be you know it's a renewal so it connects quite well to the what is being asked on the November 5th ballot and then key dates uh and election resources here uh again we we have some obligations as a school district uh some of them are legal when it comes to informing the the public uh and then just a general note that absentee voting is uh part of this as well uh and that begins September 20th uh 2024 and then links to other helpful election resources from the county and the city and other [Music] places that is that question you have a question I'd be happy to answer but yeah miss an information item we we previously approved this so um just an update thank you for the update um I imagine uh uh they'll be uh get out the vote efforts by appropriate groups as as we go so all right thank you 14 weeks till election so w less than 100 days all right next on our agenda is uh item 10 committee reports other information uh let's start with Caroline I don't have anything to report but Community engagement will resume here on Monday August 5th so excited that um otherwise there's the Rhythm Of The Rails there's two more sessions um this Wednesday if anybody's interested last one is Wednesday no I thought there's two more last one those has been a lot of fun it's been good to good to see uh you all at the the booths there along with Keith and uh other and I'm blanking on the intern's name that was there mcken McKenzie yeah yeah she was she was great to see there y thank you I'm Muhammad I'm good it's good Chad yeah quiet for me as well uh I will say I was on vacation for our last meeting I saw there was some action items um for what it's worth I would have voted in favor on those as well but I was comfortable with you all voting the way that I would have so it was felt okay to take vacation time Joe uh nothing much to report I was at uh in the booth with McKenzie and Keith the last couple of weeks at Rhythm on the rails uh just great to see uh crowds were great both nights beautiful nights uh both of them and uh it's just you know it's it's just great to be out there and uh be being part of the community and it's good that we have a booth there for uh for the schools um we had the policy meeting uh prior to this to to lay out everything that we just looked at moments ago and if I'm not mistaken the first ever guests to attend a committee meeting so we had to highlight that that's that's all I got Michelle um nothing much to report it's been in pretty quiet summer in my end uh I was just um scrolling on Instagram the other and I saw the post saying five weeks left until school and I my heart almost dropped uh just waiting for school I guess to come back up um and just starting College apps you know at that time time of the year yeah sha any thoughts on your first Mee uh it's been interesting so far um I didn't know all the thought that went went into just thinking what safety at every single like little detail um but yeah i' like it so far I'm excited all right thank you I I don't have anything new to report uh it was great going to the to the events and and seeing everybody there and uh um I we usually always sit in the back section of Rhythm on the rails like behind the behind the alley and the uh the M rats were were quite loud it was even sitting back there and so I the the saying it's if it's too loud you're too old I I I really that I really felt that that night Dr re I'm good uh just uh still amazing it's July 29th I said that we had a leadership team meeting this morning and uh it's kind of fun we're starting to see things you know ratchet up and all that planning that's been going on the last couple months starting to put it into action so Jim any anything more we've heard why not the uh we we were finally able to hire the attendance specialist position that's being funded by Scott County uh meline Hill who I have not met yet um was hired by Ray and representatives of the county she'll be starting on August 19th um and we'll be having some meetings with the county coming up in the next two weeks about steps we can collabor collaboratively take with them to increase student attendance this year Jim what what percentage of that's being paid by the county 100 I think that bear is repeating that's a question board members may be asked and yes absolutely right thank you Tiffany uh the only thing I will add is that we worked really hard the buildings have worked really hard to make sure our back to school mailings and communication for families um Michelle mentioned the five weeks and we want to make sure those that have more than one child in their household which is roughly 50ish per of those in our district it's very clear what they need to do they're not stressed they understand what's going on and our principles have done a great job of streamlining that and all of that will start to hit homes in a week or so in addition to um our back to school edition of education for forward which will be a little bit bulkier than before since we don't have shab Valley news but it's going to be a way that we can hit all taxpayers and community members in our district with news that's going on so a lot of great communication out there thank you and I had a follow question now that I think about it when you talk about that with with with us not having shock B Valley News um I know when people registered you know to run for positions the shock Valley News kind of followed that is there a way to to track when people register or we just have to check in with the office to see when people file uh so there is a link that gets posted once it gets filed with the county that show everybody that has registered and also the Shaka chamber will be continuing they should have an opportunity it's up to each member if they'd like to sit for an interview and they have other public forums that will hopefully meet the needs of others that may have been touched through sh Valley news thank you Jesse anything from the city um well first I just want to apologize for my absence recently um I don't want it to be misconstrued that I you guys are less important than my other liais on so um but you're um I want to be present here for you guys um the only thing I want to just mention is our Parks and Recreation Department is going to have a carnival on um I just have the date Tiffany probably po um August 2nd uh ages 3 to 10 is the target market 10 to noon at Lions Park there's no registration required but it is a $5 um participation fee so just something for the kids from people listening at home uh any questions from you guys we will have a Bo there yes CL full and the Welcome Center will be there and that actually popped into my head night to night is August 6th yes in the community which is a big night so we'll be going out following the
