for all all right good evening everybody Welcome been a while since we've had the meeting it's good to see everybody again uh that said um I would like to uh start the meeting with u some somber news uh it is with deep sorrow that we share an update concerning a student at Shak high school we are saddened to communicate the passing of Julius West as shared by his family with our district this loss May raise many emotions for those within our greater School Community our district crisis team which is made up of dedicated professionals trained to help with the needs of students fames IES and school Personnel will be present at the high school throughout the week will you please join me in a moment of silence thank you next on our agenda is our saber Pride portion of the meeting and we will start with item 3.1 the Minnesota Community Education Statewide project award for measa summer camp and here to present is Lisa Ron our director of Community Education and Mary Hernandez the mastle director welcome you have many guests with you which you can introduce for us good evening um I'll let you go ahead and introduce who you brought with Mary well Ashley is a former participant Messa which is also now part of per of the school district and also received per of the Year Awards so when we look at um matric metrics and prooven results here she is that the camp works and then Debbie's our finance director so she needed to come so she's everybody's BX but it's also a founder of I married her and then I brought baile she's also a coordinator of the program along with Lupita who could not be here tonight even though she's listed on the agenda and so um yeah I'm Lisa Ron the director of community aded and um I'm also representing two roles here I'm the region for rep for the Minnesota Community aded Association and the Region 4 rep presents the award to the Region 4 winner which just happens to be us so I Know Tiffany attention she's got a little video before I um have a little blurp here to read to you guys [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so um just a little background information this award recognizes outstanding projects that have exemplified the true Spirit of Community Education Mikasa summer camp has demonstrated exceptional creativity impact and commitment to the principles of Community Education the program has not only enriched the lives of those involved but has also set standard of Excellence for others to follow the Mikasa summer camp is fully Grant funded um that Community Education in partnership with the masasa organization offers prek through 11th grade we have everything from art games physical activities guest speakers and more this is a five-week program that includes Transportation this past summer the program was located at Jackson Elementary and runs the same weeks as targeted Services summer school right after their program is finished the younger students build friendships create works of art learned basic concepts of reading played games and had physical activities we've seen the goodness in this Camp from students being timid and scared on the first day of camp to leaving each day with a huge smile on their face with all the fun that they've had the saying this was The Best Day Ever Was Heard quite a bit although probably in Spanish so can you say that in Spanish this is what camp is all about making sure students have a safe place to learn grow and develop into Strong impactful World Chang Changers um the sixth through 11th grade students flourish by receiving art interactive activities like egg drops catapult builting trivia and much more and they also had a variety of guest speakers who came and talked about important topics such as Mental Health Online safety drug prevention and budgeting the counselors came to Camp each day prepared and ready to have fun to lead and to encourage their students many of the counselors were involved in the camp when they were younger and now their leading students students who could potentially be counselors themselves one day we've seen the counselors use their position as a step into the right direction by getting jobs within the school district and being involved in different Community programs and receiving full ride scholarships for college so a huge thank you to the businesses and organizations that have made this summer camp a success without their involvement we wouldn't be able to run the camp so we've gotten generous donations and when I say we I mean community and Mikasa um from St Francis Regional Health Shaka Public Schools Shaka rotary Shaka midw and soup community and the Minnesota Valley Electric trust so it is my pleasure as a region for rep to present the Mikasa summer um Camp award to all of you together so I'm going to hand it to you [Applause] just quickly want to say not that I was asked to say something but I'm going to say um I grew up in eastn West St PA and it was a very diverse Community a very diverse District but not one District in my experience has supported our Latino Community as much as sh to be so thank you thank you because here we are right and we want to duplicate them and I think we are doing a very good job so thank you thank you for supporting our community and hopefully we can change that 73% yeah I see what you're doing can you absolutely can s it baile next on our agenda is item 3.2 National First Responders day and here to present is Canon Christensen our district crisis and safety coordinator thank you for having me as you know I was a Shak police officer for 19 years a first responder for 23 years and on this day um I did not bring any First Responders with me because most of them that I know don't like to stand in the spotlight and they just like to be out work in so but I did want to point out some some uh incredible facts about our local First Responders shy Police Department 50 scorn officers one incredible thing about them is the state of Minnesota requires 48 Hours of training officer um our officers are at least doing 54 hours of training every year and most of them are way above and beyond that they're constantly going to training and trying to better themselves as officers we have officers uh you're only required a two-year degree in Minnesota most of our cops have fouryear degrees a bunch of them have master's degrees and they're constantly trying to better themselves and get more training our SRO you're looking at 12 years seven years 16 years we have some very experienced officers as our SRO and we're really lucky to have them in that position our sh be fire department 40 sworn them along with the the paramedics are averaging 15,000 hours of training as a team together so again they're just constantly training and putting in more hours our shita fire department they cover 51 square miles um not just the city of Shak people but they're going out into our townships too and covering those areas um get to see them I usually don't like them seeing them when I'm in the school anymore but we do get to meet them once in a while you have the Shak be men walkington um these men and women are awesome the rate rank number in two two top 2% of firefighters in the country they don't just cover um metal walkington Community they also come out all the time on Mutual Aid to help cover for a when their short ambulances or the fire department um to assist them in mutual Aid and stuff so we're constantly working with them and Men those men and women and they're just awesome in what they do and their attitude and their training that they have St Francis Regional Medical Center 2024 practice green Health partner for change award they just uh cut ribbon on a huge new medical building that they're building out there on St Francis um a couple weeks ago I got a tour at the high school of the some of the fac fa ities that they've contributed to the high school it's just amazing what those students are learning I mean when I was in high school we didn't have anything like that and I ended up as a paramedic then it was just it's amazing what these high school kids get to to train on based on the health from St Francis Scott County 100 sworn officers and employees between the jail um probation the officers that are on the street working every day state WI we have more than 600 State Troopers that come and assist when needed we have bomb squads Urban search and rescue hazardous material we have Aviation forces that can help out whenever it's needed and these are a lot of the partners that we work with directly Al Scott County St Francis [Music] Palmer and to all of our First Responders out there and uh I just wanted to say thank you on this National responder day they always appreciate Shak support and Shak School District support thank [Applause] you next up is National principles month and here to present is Jim mosich our assistant superintendent and former principal thank you uh we are forunate have nine head principles and five assistant principles in shaki um they are the ones out doing the work every single day whether it is implementing assessment for learning developmental designs new math curriculum supporting our our literacy work uh but even more importantly they drive the relationships with our students and our buildings they build the culture they build the community and they they make school a real home away from home for all of our students so with that in mind uh we took the time I shouldn't say we took the time our deans of students the time to interview some of our students and let you know uh the difference that our building administrators are making on a daily basis he did though and also uh last year and this year he played like music and cafeteria with uh with a speaker and it was pretty fun [Music] Mr hendri is funny corny like he's corny but he's funny I love you ell so much that was a great teacher ever students and I love Mr HRI shoes how he dresses in his shoes like we always like talking about sports and stuff and he always likeing me she it makes like the school feel like very safe and appreciate it but like theud if you're having a bad daying okay like why I very always I need help my schedule or anything of that kind person uh I made a PO choice to get on the right track and get my school back together and my social life back together the quality I really admire in Mr L is that he's very personable and social and he'll always go above and beyond his students you're always doing your job I always see track help the school go the way it goes and we will be uh celebrating principal's month this Wednesday with lunch uh at our monthly instructional leadership meeting which will take place at West at West school thank you thank you thanks everyone next on our agenda is item four the consideration of the agenda as presented to approve second motion by alri and a second by broy any discussion see seven our information portion um well one of our information portions uh first is 7.1 our elementary math curriculum implementation update and here to present is nicas summer our assistant director of learning teaching INE Equity welcome thank you thank you for having me tonight um okay here we go um our our math prum our Focus really I think um calls into play that responsibility to provide quality core instruction while developing agency in our students so that's kind of what I'm going to focus on t showcasing some of the updates for our math implementation I just wanted to put some context around the work our last adoption was 2007 so that was a long time ago um 2022 the drafted math standards came out and that's when our teachers really dug in and started looking at um the standards but also what research has said about math and how it's changed over time and then articulation um started 23 24 with that pilot last year and we are in year one of full implementation this year there are really Three core principles that we are focusing our training on as we roll This resource out the first is that we are implementing tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving so this is where process becomes more important than product um and we're really focusing on multip entry points and varied solution strategies so if you have any children that are in uh the the elementary math right now and they're bringing things home it it might look totally different to you than what you experienced um when you were in school another core principle is uh facilitating meaningful discourse so again kids learning from kids um really solidifying their understanding by engaging in uh talking with each other um and learning from each other and then the third is that we honor that productive struggle learning happens when there's a challenge and the brain is engaged in a task and so um you really do see if you go into the classrooms kids working through some tough math um together and it's really been fun to get in the classrooms and observe this so I thought we'd take a little look uh and hear from our students and teachers how things are [Music] going like this czy it's fun that we get work in groups so if I have trouble on a problem I could ask my friends that are in my group uh if they could help we did love for partner we did a bunch of gallery walks which we never done second grade and it helps us because learning from others and we also did some a lot of m games something I have done differently in math this year has been to give different reasons and in those reasons we share and talk with others this has been helpful to learn different ways to of doing math from other people we do this thing where we can write on our desk to show our thinking and then we do a gallery walk it makes us see what others are thinking and let us other and I did not know that we could do multiplication to get a division answer I always thought we just had to do wrong division there isn't really a term good at math but you know if you could explain how you got your answer I'd say you're good at Ma the new is is evident in every lesson in illustrative math the kids are working through problems on their own partners and then as a class with this set set in place I see more kids solving problems without giving up and solving problems in more One Way by talking ites as a teacher not show so much reing kids to come up with students have a much better understanding of what they're actually doing um they're not just following a process to get an answer and not really knowing where that answer came from and truly understanding how they breaking the student discourse has been huge in this program it encourages all students to listen and resp others in Partners groups whole class and even student and teacher as far as problem solving the students are the ones doing the problem solving to learn mathematics the warmups the activities the lesson synthesis and the cool down allow kids to question Wonder think deeply and explain their thinking they are solving problems without giving up they are what they know to solve problems the best part is that the kids truly like it this is truly whats or small to solve problem I change them daily they might have a small group of two or three and then also they can strategies own Reas Sol and then call it teer [Music] usies um so I think it's best toar from people that are actually doing the work the students and the teachers um some of the ways that we're bringing this math to life really is um in dedicated chunks of time so uh it's it's a routine process the lessons but it does require significant time block so we're looking at a 50 minute core instructional time and then 25 minutes of centers for kids to play games and interact kind of some of the things that you saw in those videos um and here here's how we're supporting it so this summer we had big training roll out um for teachers where they came in for four days um and did work around what it means to be a math thinking classroom and then understanding that resource um we've dedicated all of our district PD time to this math implementation um and we have implementation coaching happening in every building so the teacher teams meet two times a month with our um math coaches to work through this implementation um troubleshoot as needed help them think through these these big shifts in instruction um and I'm just so grateful to our teachers who are are not only serving as articulation reps but um it's a lot for for our teachers to implement new standards a new resource um and they're doing it and I think having fun and really learning lot about math themselves so uh it's been great moving forward so thinking about kind of as we Implement we're going to get better and better so what are our next steps as it comes to math really learning more about how to partner with families um and communicate about these shifts with their families thinking more systemically about that vertical alignment E12 and what that looks like so we make sure that we're building a strong system and then thinking through sustain so you know if we didn't if we don't have another resource adoption for 10 years how are we going to ensure that we're continuing to hold tight to those key look fors and those shits so that's something that we're working on with our teacher leaders in articulation this year that is what I have for you today questions if I may so some context and I you know how many months ago as at the district advisory Council and got to do some of the exercises around this really kind of thinking math kind of concept and that peer-to-peer ring and we literally just saw you raise your hand because everybody get it and of course the room is silent because it's vulnerable to to admit that you don't understand now you've got collaboration and walking around the desks and running other it's so much more than that it's it is that problem solving and I love Mother how do you know if you it well if you're good at problem solving then you're good at and I could go on but just just an incredible work in that space and the thought that's put into um these these groups into the articulation uh takes a long time and you think about this overlapping with all the literacy work on top of it you know some of the same cohorts are trying to do literacy and simultaneously so no no small task my question is simply this uh as part of this trajectory because this is largely K K5 does this ductail well into the middle level and ulol yes and I think in a month or so you'll hear from secondary math on how their implementation is going but same concept right really working on that those same three principles um are really kind of pulled K12 so the student discourse the focus on process um you know the math the math interactions the entry points yes similar maybe at a future board development mean we have to do some of the exercises it was literally fun I proba get whoever whoever said math and fun in the same do you have cont for show yeah actually going to ask a question um my question was like now that I know more that this is going to be further implanted through secondary my question was um when I went to elementary school and whatnot um I remember I had friends that were all like I don't know if they still do this but I remember enriched math K first and second grade and HP math uh does this kind of learning also um spill over into those areas as well yes we are pulling in um for our HP program they're doing kind of some math compacting um same enrichment they'll do some math in the enrichment for students who are ready for a booves and the same thing same goes for um like accelerator classes like Middle School level I can't speak to accelerated at the middle level I'm sorry I think when Sarah comes she can kind of fill you in on what's happening there but yeah and I kind of have a followup question building off show that is I think the goal with all teachers is to make sure your students can eventually take challenging classes like en and classes thrive in like AP classes if they do choose to take them so how would this new curriculum um set up prepare them to possibly take AP AR class so in my opinion one of the the shift from teaching procedures or like algorithms to actually having that that conceptual understanding of the math you know when you think about just just take a division right long division I was trained to kind of memorize a process to get an answer but I didn't really understand what that meant and so what you're what we're seeing with our our elementary students they're drawing they're they're moving things around so they really visualize and see it's very concrete before it becomes abstract and that's what the research says will make a difference for students in terms of seeing themselves as math math and candidates for those higher level classes so hopefully you can see big numbers of students out in I could ask kind of one more phone question top question because ask one more um on top of uh shanon's question um how would this change will this change curriculum like disrupt because right now like you as we know math is a subject in which without prior knowledge of last year or the pr it build on each other right so um having that base and core fundamental ideas is very important so my question is changing the curriculum like this would it affect further steps as in like now that kids are trying to go into accelerated math how would um kids who have taken this method versus kids who haven't taken this method how does their trajectory kind of change that's a great question I hope I can answer it um so part of this new resource has multiple entry points for students so if it if there's one lesson and you know because we are implementing in fifth grade they haven't had some of those foundational pieces so there's very direct connections back to a concept from fourth grade or third grade that you can use to accelerate and get students ready for that particular fifth grade lesson which would apply for acceleration or even if students are struggling how do we give them an extra boost so it kind of has backwards and forwards next steps like right there for teachers to kind of move through as students are progressing sorry I don't know if I just went more quickly I I I just was wondering because like I also know that uh like the high school math curriculum has kind of been um I don't know how to say this but it's been kind of taken back a couple of steps and I wonder now with this forward movement with an elementary and now that pre I don't know what exactly it would do is but it's splitting apart I think it was algebra 2 algebra right yes how how does this like how does that how does um this Elementary now impact that future because it feels like we're moving two different directions in both secondary and Elementary so the the secondary course um the intermediate algebra is new this year for for freshman um you know I I think developmentally there are some Milestones that Minnesota's always kind of been really aggressive with math compared to other stat um so that's where you're seeing that intermediate algebra and then geometry and then the algebra 2 as in 11th grade um I think it's still I think students are are going to have much more success k a moving into high school so that they can be really successful in the math at the high school and because of your block schedule you could theoretically choose to take math for the full year and do some acceleration opportunities that maybe weren't there before but again have to let Sarah answer some of those questions for you one question um I know this is new and just as being implemented what two months in um but at what point will we be able to see some benchmarking or some results of where we can measure to say yes this curriculum is doing this for our students to improve math scores or um just the core knowledge of being able to um move from grade level to grade level and be at that grade level for now so um implementation science would say when you do a new resource like this you sometimes see a dip before you see that that um those student results come up um I think it depends it depends on how out of alignment we had been when we take our fast bridge in our MCAS it'll be a good indicator that will kind of highlight for us where we have been as a system and then I would say really over the next three years kind of three years is when you really get to that full implementation teachers have learned a lot about the shifts and instruction the new standards um and then you start to see really big gains hopefully we'll see them soon everything will you see it like in the younger grades meaning like kindergarten first grade sooner than you would maybe a fourth or fifth grade because they are being introduced to math in this new curriculum right from the beginning versus kids that are already in school a little bit older in elementary of having to apply A New Concept later in their basic skill that would make perfect sense that we would see that I think it's still possible we might see a DI because of the the newness for all of the teachers um but it would make sense that it would go Trend up sooner because yeah we're closing that Gap really early on thanks I told you math was fun yeah yeah this is the most discussion of a topic in a while so math must be fun is thank you next on our agenda is item 7.2 a budget update and here to present is Bill maazi our Director of Finance speaking of good good evening uh thank you for the opportunity to present uh the first monthly budget update of the 2024-25 fiscal year what you will see on the screen is a familiar sheet where we look at our revenue and expenditures and we compare our year-to day Revenue expenditures with the same time period in the prior year and then the second prior year this information was reviewed briefly by our finan and Facilities committee meeting uh this evening uh members this evening and as you would imagine here uh through September the end of September there's not a whole lot of variances to discuss we're just in the preliminary stages of filling up our buckets on both the revenue and the expenditure side starting first with Revenue uh we have collected 13,722 of $121 million general fund budget that's good for 11.32% collections in the current year compared to 11.25% in the prior year and just about 11% in the second prior year so you can see we're tracking very close with prior and second prior year um couple of items of note first of all on the federal side we have not really collected negative revenue on the federal side what that is that's a prior year receivable uh to account for expected collections in this year for last year we've reversed that out which is our accounting practice and and just are in the process of collecting that Revenue this year um also property taxes not to be alarmed by that zero figure that that zero number and the property tax row we receive our first property tax payment for the current fiscal year usually in October or November right at the end of October first part of November and so you can expect that to see to start populating next month when we look at the October actuals if not the following month when we look at the November actuals on the expenditure side uh we have SP spent 8,467 of $23.1 million general fund budget which is good for 15% expenditures as of September 30th compared to 16.87% in the prior year and 16.91% in the second prior year again as you look at our our main drivers on the expense budget which is salary and wages and employee benefits you can see that we're tracking very close with the prior and second prior years uh which is good news albeit a very small sample size uh the the only real variance that I could identify here is down under the equipment uh where we've spent 17.8% compared to 53 and 53 rounded percent in the prior and second prior that's really timing on our expense purchases when we've made some of our larger ticket purchases obviously earlier on in the in the years in Prior and second prior year and also timing on um settlement of of some of our summer projects as well so where we're going to go from here uh this Thursday we have a meeting with our audit team uh that includes members of administration and I think one or at least one or more uh members of our finance and Facilities committee where we'll look at last year's audited results and then next month on November 18th uh Bergen kdv now creative planning formerly Bergen kdv will be at the finance and Facilities committee meeting and also at the school board meeting to present the audit results for last year what I can tell just by way of a preview not to steal the Thunder for next month our fund balance in the unassigned general fund is is very very close to what we budgeted um the restricted fund balances have gone up related to some of the settlements from the 2023 legislative session so any variances that you see on the revenue side are going to be positive variances specifically in that restricted set of side I don't want to steal too much of the Thunder because you'll hear about that in more detail next month with that I'd be happy to take any questions I I just have one comment um it'll be very interesting to see how the uh you know the fees and interest go this year considering you know we budgeted third of what we ended up with you know last year and we're already half you know it's been three months half of what we budgeted so it'll be very interesting to see how that uh turns out with uh interest rates declining decreasing I should say but still I mean we had 50% almost through three months is is a good step and hopefully we can get to the budget let's just say by the end of January and then look it after that great point I did downgrade the interest expectat the interest budget the interest earning budget from the last year revised budget just to uh because of that forecast of declining interest rates a little bit so I did back that off um so hopefully uh interest rates you know stay where they are and we are able to right um I'm curious about the reconciling the dates so this is September 30 but like the the dates at the tops of the far right columns are June 30 yes and at the bottom is that am I understanding that right is that just more the fiscal years align is that way exactly yeah and I looking at it now I can see how that would be so much confusing uh for me to look at it all the time of course it makes perfect sense but um September 30th is the date that we would run our actuals from the revenue and expenditure side and then on the right hand side we are comparing that to the end of the fiscal year exactly what you said so um percentage of the budget for the fiscal year ended June 30 of 2025 compared to 24 and 23 thank you just a co question though and I know they what this means but I'm not sure if everybody maybe on the board does what is um the E rate payment can you describe what that is I don't know that I can describe that you could probably do better in exact detail U it's it's it's under the tech department so Brian Dro our director of Technology I'm sure could do a a better job than I could but it is a payment for some of our expenditures related to our Telecom services so fiber things of that nature uh there's a program where you can submit for reimbursement for some of those costs and that's a federal program correct correct I'm good all right thank you Bill okay thank you we move to the first action section of our agenda next up is item 8.1 approval of the Food Services contract your present is Keith Gray our director of Human Resources good evening um this is our food service group of course this is the group of folks who serve our kids breakfast and lunch every day during the school year um so uh this group uh this year decided to rework their wage schedule a little bit so um there was no real straight line number for year one and year two there just were some adjustments eliminating a step at the very beginning and then taking adding a step in the bottom is what I've got there in that um particular item and then also the uh amounts that were added to health insurance or not added but are actually the health insurance premiums that the district is contributing toward health insurance for single employee plus one in family and the total settlement was 7.31 which is very consistent with other ones you've seen this cycle for negotiation so there's any question uh keep I don't you know can you speak to call it the industry because I know schools have been certainly you competing against other employers for you know Food Service this Talent um where do this position you know shocky not just relative to other districts but in that industry it's really that reward and renal yeah I mean I think so last cycle but last cycle we made a significant move if you remember we did the L referendum where we had the second question added some additional money that was joining directly to people who were der contact with students and this group actually got a portion of that consistent with the number of FTE there are associated with it so we've made a pretty significant move to improve pay because you're right we're competing against you know McDonald and every other food industry for sta I will say um since that move I think we've been it's much easier for us to get staff um in our buildings to serve you know meals and do all the things that need to be done so we have a whole lot fewer you know positions open I don't think we have any positions open quite honestly right now I think we're in pretty good shape that's a good Ben so I mean so you know this one there were some adjustments made again sort of aiming toward trying to be competitive particularly for people who are new to the district because you you are those are fresh people that you're competing with a lot of other Industries to to do that I think one of the other though realistic difficulties is um the people who entered the system you know we serve meals in a really short time frame it's not an 8 hour day typically so that's you know you're you're finding somebody who either is looking for a second job or is comfortable with that number of hours not only you know condensed in a work day but also you know mostly during the school year keep one question for you um you had mentioned that we have a pretty good um St for food service we have a lot of openings right now um what impact does the unemployment insurance that um this group would be eligible for um have on retaining employees do we know well I don't know I don't I mean we do have employees who you know in this particular group I don't have the number exactly in but we do have a number of employes who apply for that um I'm sure it helps that you know I mean there is a there in a lot of our physicians we have people who have been in their jobs for quite some time and Food Services is no exception to that there there's folks that have been in there in those positions for for us here 10 10 or more years so for those folks they it's it's whatever has worked into their you know lifestyle what they like to do you know and the the ones who are probably more Mobile in and out are actually more new you know people who are new to it come and try it out you know or you know and whether you know I think it's like any other job you have to assess is this providing me enough financial you know reinforcement to maintain those jobs but I'm sure that makes a difference for f because it's not a low number that states reimbursing us currently but it's number and followup question uh of this bargaining group um would you say the lon share of these individuals accept the heal Insurance option or are theying Insurance another you know I mean um the folks have been here for a long period of time are usually in more of our um what what's called extended hours they might be you know in a five hour to seven hour um positions those folks typically are taking health insurance but then as you get fewer hours the amount you pay gets a lot more expensive so it's it's there are a sizable number who take insurance but not everybody okay thank you you Keith next up is item 8.2 we'll bring U Bill maazi back up this is the creation of the committed fund balance resolution yes thank you um this is a good news item uh related to our facilities rent Revenue so uh just by way of background um last January we had a conversation with our finance and Facilities committee uh related to our facilities rent revenue and uh we've seen a positive trend in recent years of our community utilizing our facilities at a higher rate um and the facility's rent Revenue has gone up as a as a result of that um and so from a from an accounting treatment standpoint we account for our facilities rent and our facilities expenditures within our community service fund which is fund four um Lisa R is the director there she was here earlier this evening um after our revenue and expenditures are net together uh we often have a a Surplus and so what we are recommending this evening is required by gby which stands for the governmental Accounting Standards Board which is a resolution to establish a committed fund balance for facilities rent income rental income is what that is um without getting into a great level of detail on the different classifications within the governmental Accounting Standards Board um the one that we are most familiar with is the assigned fund balance that's the overall measure of our Financial Health in the general fund we discussed that quite a bit but there are other classifications uh assigned fund Balan is one for example we have an assigned fund balance for a subsequent year budget uh there are also fund balance restricted accounts things like long-term facilities maintenance operating Capital things of that nature or capital projects lby has a restricted fund balance account this would be establishing a different classification called a committed fund fun balance uh which is a little bit more now is when I'm going to use the word restrictive a lot a little bit more restrictive um than an assigned fund balance um but a little bit uh less restrictive than a restricted fund balance if that makes any sense and so uh by taking action and approving the resolution to commit uh an assigned fund balance for facilities rent income what we would be doing is we would be putting the balance in this case for last year our Revenue exceeded our expenditures by $287,900 we would be putting 287,000 in a committed fund balance in the general fund to be used for future needs related to facilities rent income um those of you who are at the uh finance and Facilities committee Dr Redmond anything specifically related to that summary that I missed at all no I think this is just the uh fruition of uh actually a few years of of Labor and kind of the the idea of yep we're going to rent facilities we're also going to work really hard to serve you know the youth associations and other organizations in the community but the idea would be that we would end up with you know more Revenue than expenditure and this uh this committed fund balance allows us then uh to Target that and use that to help maintain renovate and improve our facilities as we move forward so it's taking the money from where it's being earned and putting it into a committed account so that it can be used to continue to uh Foster that endeavor so I have a question um so can you give us some examples of potentially where this money might be used is it scoreboard replacement for example is it building a new facility sure what what types of things were would this money be used for it's a it's a good question um so so we have uh I'll I'll partially answer and then I'm sure Dr edman will be able to answer better than I will um we have our deferred maintenance our long-term facilities maintenance allocation and our spending plan for that and we have an operating Capital allocation in in a spending plan for that um obviously with increased facilities rent we have increased utilization and and things wear out right so these would be things that sort of fit into uh a third bucket if you will so um I don't I don't know that we've discussed an additional Facility by any means but things uh was things that were mentioned in the meeting previous were like Turf replacement things of that nature so um something that would fall into that that category that that type of expenditure and it it's but it's and it's not just to maintain because then it's just a circle supporting itself basically this is actually we're in the black right more money's coming in then then we need to maintain so it's actually improvements going forward so and if I may like you said some of this is planful some of it is oh backboard inadvertently gets broken as a result of use and so you could use that fun to replace it as opposed to go into others as well exactly right yep this provides a little bit of flexibility in case something like that came up that was not for area I just wanted to make one I think I don't know if this might be true or not but I do believe right now I'm in cont obviously band and whatnot but and theater as well but the overhead lights in the M Auditorium are currently rone do you I don't know if you know this or not but is it possibly because of this do this uh that is related to our long-term facilities maintenance yep so so similar uh in one of the buckets that we discuss but that's our long-term facil and Michelle actually discuss that with director so there there was already some money set up for that that yeah that wased but it could be moving forward you know and I think what it does is it it it's taking the revenue that's being generated and putting it back into the purpose where it should which is you know allowing the facilities to be able to continue to generate that Revenue some you know has shorter life expectancies than others um the other piece is what does is it lets the folks that have the broad vision of the district in terms of all the different you know facilities facilities maintenance operating Capital ltfm all of those to bring this in under that large umbrella it obviously it's committed and can only be used for certain things but also to prioritize make sure that we're we're making decisions districtwide um and anything facilities related or maintenance related replacement related you know understanding what our priorities are this gives us a little bit of you know flexibility Chris you asked scoreboards we you know that whole system has become much more operational we have a fund uh which and I'm going to look at bill for the exact where we're taking the revenue that is generated from you know selling advertising spaces and then putting that is that a committ oper operating Capital yeah it goes into operating Capital but you are noting kind of the revenue that is specifically generated from advertising rentals with the thought being yeah those again have finite lifespans and they're expensive to replace so again we did not have those systems in place six years ago those folks that have been on the board these were some of those things I know we talked about early on and said we're going to develop real good systems and structures for doing this work and I I just I applaud the effort of bill and his team because again this is a culmination of a lot of a lot of hard work and Community Education and our folks who do the facilities you know oversight rentals they're doing a great job as well but to make sure that we're all on the same page and that we're making the decisions not peace meal you know we don't have one entity going hey we need a new backboard and hey we need lights in a theater and somebody else going no we need this and to kind of bring this all in under that that same oversight which is going to give us the best impact and allow us to set calendars and timelines that uh you know we can live within our resources as well and and Mr broy brought this up earlier it's transparency and it is matching it's using it's a more dedicated matching of Revenue and expenditures which is very important in the accounting field and that being said I would like to make a motion contract and the bill will present yes thank you um I I I would like to know Jenna from is here who is the CEO of Palmer bus service so we uh certainly appreciate Jenna taking time out of her busy schedule to attend our meeting thanks for being here uh together uh Jenna and Chris Champlin Champlin put uh played a big role with Palmer as well well this is a process that started last February uh where we uh we entered into negotiations with Palmer on a new transportation management uh contract so our our transportation contract with Palmer expired June 30 of 20124 um we do have a new settlement it was discussed tonight at our finance and Facilities committee and we are uh recommending it for approval tonight at the board meeting you can see that uh from a rate increase stando Point uh year one which is the current year 20242 the 77 passenger rate is $484 which is a 4.15% increase uh the second year then 2025 26 the rate goes up to $434.33 increase you may recall the previous contract included a market searge monthly Market surcharge that um was paid to sort of deal with some uncertainties related to covid and covid related expenses to include everything from fuel prices to Staffing to just very very difficult times and very unknown times during Co that market search charge is now out of the current contract that we're recommending to you for approval tonight so uh the new terms of the agreement would be 2024 25 and 2526 with an option to extend for an additional four years which yes you are seeing that there is 2030 on that which is incredible to see uh rates for future years to be negotiated at a later date uh and are at both parties discretion so just by way of summary uh we're excited to bring this recommendation to you tonight uh We've enjoyed a productive working relationship with Palmer for many many years uh they are a great partner with us and and we look forward to many many more years um partnering with Palmer to provide excellent service to our kids from a transportation standpoint entertain a motion to approve I'll make a motion to approve second motion by aldri and a second by Johnson and this is not a resolution uh is there meeting not the last though um item 9.1 capital projects Levy renewal information and Dr Redmond will present yeah these are really a lot of the same slides and what I'm going to ask is Tiffany to just kind of page through those and we get to one towards the back that has a video and then I'm going to use this opportunity to you know I don't know if you've got any questions most of you have seen this this presentation multiple times um but uh I think I like it best when I'm not talking but yeah go ahead and let's let's students in our community will vote on whether to renew our school district's capital projects Levy also known as our technology Levy renewing this Levy will not increase the current tax rate this technology Levy was previously approved by voters in our community and provides funding that can only be used for educational technology related services and staff and Safety and Security voters will decide whether to renew the existing Levy at the same terms if approved the levy would continue to provide funding for learning technology programs and devices Technology support for staff and students enhances Safety and Security for all schools maintaining robust cyber security systems and more the current Levy was approved in 2015 once again renewing this Levy will not increase the current tax rate if voters do not renew the levy the district would lose critical funding which would reduce or eliminate crucial technology programs resources and support you can learn more by visiting our website and don't forget to vote wait I haven't heard anything about no yeah that that's that's our presentation and there's any quick questions great otherwise we move on to the next agend last to do that thank you Dr redond next up is item 9.2 the second public notice of general election and here to present is Tiffany Olson our director of communications and strategic development thank you Smith this will be a very quick pardon me informational item uh certainly answer any questions that you have this is a no this is required uh public notice given that we have a special election that's being held during a general election so this is related only to of the capital projects lby this documentation that you see here when you walked in you would have seen this on the window along with all of those lovely turquoise ballots that are official and all across our front office so that the public can see it any time they do not have to enter our building to do so um the second notice the terminology is exactly the same as the first public notice and as you can see it's just another opportunity for any taxpayer Community member to directly understand what's the ballot question what was approved and what uh how was this available in the general election this is also posted on our website and was just received by the Shak Public Library to post in their public noce section so again nothing has changed same terminology just touch point if there was a newspaper of record this would get published in there so this is place that all right thank you Tiffany absolutely all right now we to Our Last Action section of the meeting next up is item 10.1 our backup meeting date canvasing and uh Tiffany will present again yes this is the action item that I have to present to you today uh just to be super clear I just want to start with the recommended action here there's some Supple supplement information line of the recommended action here uh but today we're looking to approve what we're calling a backup canvasing date for the general election results on November 5th and that backup election date which you're looking to approve today is Friday November 15th at 7 A.M here at the Sha Public Schools district office in our boardroom uh if you recall you'll see some information below that line of you know there's specific dates when ites to you can canvas veteran stays included in that and you can not canvas during that time Scott County has reached out after the board had approved our initial um canvasing date which is Wednesday November 13th just to share that they could be a delay where they may need to go to the last possible day to provide us our abstracts which would be that Friday date so the recommendation you're approving here is simply to have a backup date on Friday November uh 15th we would keep Wednesday November 13th and up until 5:00 p.m. that day we would hope to receive the abstracts if we do not receive them by 5:00 pm on the 13th that meeting would be cancelled and we would hold the backup date which would already be on calendar and obviously the reverse of that if we receive the abstracts by 5m on the 13th we would continue as normal campusing at 6 and we would not have the Friday meeting I'm happy to answer any questions again there's a lot of terminology in the bottom and just reminders of specific dates when it comes to Kanas and the notice that was provided by Scott County it's a great elections team they provided this notice to everybody it wasn't just to our district and it was again if at all possible they don't want to be late they're going to work really hard this is just to ensure we can comply um and just a point of clarification I know that we discuss it the original time was 6m the original cusing date this is 7 a.m. on that alter date are we okay with that I do believe that we would have to have that meeting prior to close of business that's what I Friday which would be okay I don't know if that's four or five I have to check on the legalities of that so that is just so you know why s was proposed and we just need right corre that's correct I'm just down s before yeah in the morning y it's a great time to have a meeting yeah I was just going to add this is done so that you know we don't end up cancelling on a Wednesday and then having a call on emergency meeting we thought this is much better to be proactive much more transparent it's a little bit odd but uh you know the situation where we get that that notice from Scott County um this seemed like the the best the best forward you know we'll hope that uh things go as planned on Wednesday evening November 13th but if not we' got the fall back 7 a.m. on Friday the 15th and I'm trying to recall I don't know that we've ever had a have we had a fallback date on prior election this is the first we we've never received a message saying hey we're not sure we can get you your abstracts okay to do the canvas and it is just one day they only have one more day because it has to be done by the 15th correct days correct yes veterans say they can't work so that does so Tiffany is there a chance that we may not get the abstracts until noon on that Friday uh no this date was in they have asked to have any meetings anytime on Friday is their preference so my assumption is would be to get it sometimes on Thursday yes I think that uh a backup for this to get on the record is a smart idea and I will make a motion to approve the secondary backup dat a motion by Aldrich and a second by Johnson any further discussion seeing none all those in favor I I opposed motion carries item 10.2 is the academy Champion agreement for Canterbury Park and Tiffany will present so excited to talk something other than an election um this is an action item that many folks are very excited about uh and I am simply the messenger in this there's been a lot of hard work uh outside of this room there's two attachments that you have in the board book um not necessarily presenting on what's on the screen I just have it there as a visual uh but if you recall I guess it would be maybe this time last year we've rolled through our Academy a champion agreement renewals and we had was added um Shutter Fly moved out and you know we've had some really great Partners we have fiveyear agreements with them and that is to basically be the Allin supporter of the certain Academy and right now we have Hometown Bank that you approved two different contracts they had a one-year extension and then they approved a four years so they're on the same cycle the board has done that previously Entrepreneurship Academy which is what Hometown Bank is presently a champion for there's so much that goes on in that Academy you see it when it's presented from our LT team I mean you have everything from our culinary team to marketing to finance and business and um a shock beap School site uh canabury park has been one for quite some time and they've really act uh served in a champion capacity and similar to Human Services the city and the county it's just a beautiful partnership Hometown bake and Canterbury are very much for let's let's come together because we can fill in some of the holes that Hometown Bank is worried they weren't providing the right real world experiences for and vice versa so what you have in front of you today um you'll see the Canterbury Park summary impact this actually speaks to how they've been acting thus far in a champion capacity this is last year this was pulled together by the academy team at theol and you can see if you go to the second page of this file that they've had over 500 hours of invested time just last year and that's what is documented most of the time it's much more than that uh and they do a lot for for our students so theem is very happy for this um the contract that's in front of you is four years as well so again we can get everyone lined up at the same time it's focused on that time more than the funds itself and we are working uh this week to get a signing date and the goal is that before the start of the year we would have a signing ceremony um at the school and everyone would be invited to that we were hoping to have that date today but we don't um but presented here would hopefully be recommendation and a hopeful approval to approve this agreement and we would have full um agreements for all of ourm for the next I guess four years now let me know did I miss anything jeffim second motion by Belz and a second by BR um if we pass this do we do we all get like uh get to go to the do we take you know what I motion carries thank you Tiffany yes next on our agenda is item 10.3 approval of the Cooperative agreement for gymnastics and Dr Ran will present yeah this is very straightforward this is very similar to other kind of Cooperative agreements we have for athletics um we have an opportunity to join a partnership with Prior Lake and Jordan uh and this Falls really into you know we talk about the vision and priorities and that statement of an activity for every student and every student in an activity um and and actually it's I think it's a really good fit and I wholeheartedly support this and would uh ask for your approval I'll make a motion to approve the Cooperative agreement for girls gymnastics second we have a motion by Peterson a second by Aldrich further discussion see none all those in favor I I oppos motion iies next on our agenda is item 10.4 consideration to approve easements Dr redond will present yeah we shared this at our facilities and finance committee briefly before tonight's meeting and this is uh the next step and I did share in in uh I think the last couple weeks wraps kind of information about this we there was kind of cleanup stuff making sure the county had everything they needed on file for our property was kind of the the previous most recent phase and this is actually these are the needed steps the necessary steps for the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of County Highways 78 and 79 which is on the what it be the northeast corner of our saber Fields property and so there are three uh easements one is a temporary construction easement one is a Highway easement and the other is a drainage easement we worked with uh Ben Berry from old Architects and then from uh Peter Martin who's done a lot of our legal work for different uh uh things having to do with land and buildings and so um we you know we're in also in partnership with with Scott County and so uh each of you know I guess it's up to you if you want to approve all three of those easements together you want to pull them out individually but I certainly would recommend uh approval for all three easement and that will will allow the county to begin working on that roundabout and I would make a motion to approve all three I second that we have a motion by broy and a second by Aldridge to approve all three easements any discussion see none all those in favor I oppos motion carries last action item for theight item 10.5 consideration to approve a resolution regarding an offer from Scott County for real property rights and damages and Dr Evan will present yeah this is a resolution uh because technically it is uh the sale of you know in this case a a small piece of land as part of you know the construction uh for this roundabout uh We've shared previously uh Scott County you know did had hired professional appraisal work again had this vetted by Ben beer by Peter Martin everything is in order the offer price is $6,500 for the small piece of land uh that the county would pay us for that land and again I would recommend approval uh and it is a resolution because it is technically the or a transaction involving real property I'm assuming about $6,500 or goer facilities fund to be only spent in for just like the central sale of that building yeah it has to go to operating Capital yes I'll make that motion to approve resolution as policies reviewed uh once we complete this they will all have been reviewed within the past five years um you can see it's quite a long list um so um this is more of an opportunity to ask questions about any of these things um you can see theity of them um have no changes so this is just formalizing that they have been reviewed I'll make a motion to approve the policies as presented I think this is just a second reading Oh I thought this was Final oh that's November sorry I think we as I recall we've already we've been here before but was one not unofficial well we had we did like an um I use the word emergeny we did um under statute we approved some because the law had changed and then effectively we went back and we approved those earlier this year this is kind of that second round some of these were require annual review some just updated by msba language yeah I think we're coming off kind of two rounds of you first reading second reading approval and they kind of overlapped and that's based on a little bit msba I think had a few updates that came out after the the mass and then we thought well as long as we're doing that let's take a look at everything that was older than five years and so so yeah it feels like we're just continue there's a a first reading second reading a policy you every meeting and that's because there has been we get them on the next one we will and Christy I'm not sure if you were here the last time for the first reading but I gave you honorable mention because you have you know past the Baton that is the big purple binder some fond memories we had like look at policy hard copy and try to decide what changed and so it's really come a long way so Kos to you for uh leaving that initial charge and then I heed it for a while it's in it's in better hands now but certainly Dr redond his have done a great great job just putting together this framework so it's much easier to digest and track changes I have the joy of reviewing all of these policies 100 and 200 right now Southwest sure yeah that's just lucky I know goly G any further discussion on policies all right thank you Chad next on our agenda is item 12.1 District update with Dr go ahead yeah L lot of stuff happening and it's been a you know been a little bit of time since our last board meeting too but uh a new addition of Education forward has been hitting the mailbox not mailboxes across the district recently um all kinds of stuff in there I won't read that list and I know it's arrived at at my house hopefully it has at your place of residence as well uh we had a visit from a a group called knowledge HS at theem is of shaki they took a tour and uh they're an interesting organization and you know they're that the information on the left of those photos is about knowledge Works they had an interest in us they they sought us out got connected with us and said we hear you're doing great things in the acmy of shapi so they came out uh a very serious looking superintendent in that picture on the right I really appreciate that look thank you um either that or he's very confused or panicked I'm not sure which it is but uh they they interviewed a number of folks our student ambassadors and others and had a great look around the school uh there's a link to their website they're they're quite interesting and I think uh Tiffany and I were talking earlier today we believe they're going to put together a pretty lengthy article uh highlighting Shak you know the Academy's a shock Fe coming out and tomorrow uh we're hosting again or co-hosting this time with Farmington the uh student School Board development event you know last year we hosted and then we ended up hosting again which we enjoyed and actually you know part of me would say hey let's host every year but we really thought it it's best if we kind of move that around and so uh to to get that started we did reach out to Farmington and said hey will you co-host with us with the thought that you'll host next year but uh terrific agenda we've got roughly 25 school districts that's a final number Now with uh students and adults uh from those districts and really looking at how do we how do we do a better job of bringing the voices of students into the work of school boards across uh Minnesota and in our district so really looking forward to to learning tomorrow uh with student Schoolboard members and adult school board members as well um highlight our Spotlight uh in this month in terms of uh dyslexia awareness uh certainly you know part of our comprehensive literacy framework we certainly have uh we we've begun that work with the science of reading and other things and we certainly have uh more work to do in this area but also want to call out and recognize you know the importance of of getting going and and moving forward in terms of making sure that each each student who walks through our doors is receiving uh the education uh and the opportunities to reach uh his or her fullest potential um also uh we have some staff members here uh honoring ous people's day uh they've got uh you know there's there were some other things going on on October 14th in recognition of that uh there's a an event for you to mark your calendars November 21st 2024 and I think it'd be great to hear from our you know three staff members who uh put together some thoughts about uh indigenous people's day B my name is Justine Vogal and I am a member of the Leech Lake bandal dway Ryan my name is Ryan my students refer to me as Mr fritzy um but I'm an equity specialist at East and West Middle School I'm Kelsey laru I'm a counselor here at Shak high school and I am from Turtle Mountain as a kid I wasn't told that I was a Native American uh it was safer my family felt they just uh looked and referred to me as as white for me indigenous people's day is significant because it's recognizing our people in our culture here now and not just in the past as indigenous people we have been through a lot of adversity but I want to be clear to all of our families and our students that your identity is strong the American indiia movement has Deep Roots and ties in Minneapolis I'm so excited when our students are participating in culture F or when I hear that we're learning about indigenous history within classrooms and talking about um topics that are important to indigenous people I think that we're moving in a good direction I wish you strength and whatever Journey you're on in your own way of being indigenous whether that's learning traditional Knowledge from your family or you've attended your first powow just know that you're native enough you're indigenous enough you alone are enough be proud of who you are and know that there are so many other people that are also proud of you the diversity of our student body creates an incredible environment our American Indian Education team continues to celebrate and integrate indigenous culture into our school Community it is so important that we continue to learn together I am honored to recognize indigenous people's day me Wich and uh will be a t we are honored to recognize indigenous people day which let's honor our culture stay resilient and live in a way that thinks about the generations to come we are honored to recognize indigenous people say I was going to say imagine if I was running it well that that's there'd be two more of that so that was good uh also celebrated national school lunch week uh pretty cool with some of the flex farms in in uh you know in a couple in a few places in our district due to a grant uh that Harvest of lettuce you know can provide lunch for two days keeps for up to six weeks uh again I think there's something really cool you know I I know as you as a kid and had my mom still Gardens so had some some kind of understanding of where food came from and had grandparents who farmed and uh I think that's kind of neat to to kind of help grow and and harvest and taste test the food that uh you get to eat in our lunchroom at least every once in a while uh lots of celebrations um you know just just great things happening lots of cool things um again we we continue with that monthly uh systemic structure meeting uh our Focus uh earlier this month was on student attendance really focusing on how do we how do we put the uh let's find out what's going on and let's try to help solve those challenges and let's let's do everything we can to make sure you know every kid is in school as often as possible uh and so good work happening there Contin uh we did hold that meeting oh sorry um we we do try to and I think it's great learning we we go out and we you know Tiffany does a great job you know helping to set up spaces but we hold them off campus this one happened to be at Nasa and again you know the partnership that that we continue to develop with NASA I really think it impacts in a very positive way uh our students and their learning and growth and development and then it's good for us the better we get to know our neighbors the better we get to know the different folks that are doing things across our community I think it also enhances our leadership capacity skills and understanding and then speaking of leadership a few things happening um terms of you know the ongoing site visits from the district you know cabinet or leadership teams uh and then a couple other things we've got that in the uh instructional leadership meeting uh in a couple days where um you know we're going to work on LC's professional learning communities and celebrate principal month with some food from c um always thinking of the future always moving forward that's one of the uh the adjustments when I left the classroom became an administrator my focus was always further out and so we're uh we're taking a look and uh we're ready uh to connect with future kindergarteners looking at the 25 26 school year uh and again you know stuff happening with uh saber Cubs and our early Learners over at Pearson they've got their winter Blu celebration coming up January 23rd so something to get on your calendars uh not going to read all this uh but lots of you know the Wednesday before that uh Ed Minnesota break mea Break um was was a day filled with professional learning across our our district as our our adults uh working to to learn learn and grow and be better tomorrow than than we are today and more Community connections coming up this Friday we've got the uh career expo at at uh the high school uh we did welcome you and I sent some stuff out in the wrap uh we had folks over at GN as their new staff members uh some of them were were coming on to their new campus and uh I thought they they had a lot of interest in Shak Public Schools they are a fascinating you know company uh which is made up of lots of different companies and it appears there are many many opportunities to build Partnerships uh as part of the's of shaki and maybe other places throughout our district I think uh they're very likeminded in that sense of wanting to be part of a community that's why they moved here uh and I think connecting you know with our schools for their families is one piece but connecting with our students and you know I think there's a lot of mutually beneficial opportunities that will hopefully come out of this uh there three persons running for the school board uh general election November 5th we don't need to watch the and that's my update for this meeting Dr Ed uh if I may you touched on the the farmer table and some of that actually article as well kind of wondered where sh we put in that mix of course you know we're uh involved do you see an opportunity or does that duvail with a existing Academy or is there such a thing as maybe a future Agricultural Science Academy uh because obviously the Midwest is so connected to agriculture as an industry it just and I'm Vision casting more than anything else but where does that fit in our current program well I think we're always looking for opportunities to to learn and grow I think this was an opportunity that came about people thought it was a great idea to you know bring bring fresh produce in into our lunches I think there's learning experiences I know we've got uh you know a grow lab you know down in Takata just in in this building uh and I think there's opportunities we always you know bay in crop sciences and those pieces that that we already exist and I also know that um there are some elements our Environmental Center at the high school um has you know some some elements of this uh it's ultimately trying to you know kind of find that that perfect connection between the desires and the needs and the demand that comes from our students uh and you know and then also opportunities you know throughout our community but I think again and I you know there's been great work just in terms of how do we connect with Partnerships outside the walls of our schools uh I applaud the effort of you know the Elizabeth beers and the Tiffany Olsen's and others because our our whole process for that I think has become you know much easier to understand it's become enhanced uh and we now have all kinds of entities outside of our walls who are talking to other folks they come across in the business world or when they work with folks from the city of shaki going hey that might be a great thing for students so we're always bringing those ideas in and want to continue to take those build on those um nothing you know specifically down those Pathways but again I I think there is kind of an an organic part of this that as you know opportunities arise we look at how to best capitalize on that we talked already earlier this evening about two places we have co- Academy Champions I think the goal originally when this got off the ground was man let's let's get one champion in each Academy well we've got a couple that have you know co-champions and certainly and you look at what Canterbury was doing before there's a wide range of of opportunities so we certainly I think you know we're always open to that but nothing nothing imminent if you will thank you Dr Edmond next on our agenda is it 13 committee reports and other information um let's start with Chad tonight um so evening engagement we met earlier tonight um she we talked about a lot um all this touch on one of the things we did was kind of just um some brainstorming amongst ourselves of um what other events to um have a school board Presence at um was some interest certainly by me about um having school board Presence at the uh um culture Fest um I think that would be a good opportunity that's a really well attended event um there's also uh middle school and high school musicals or plays coming up um so maybe try to hit those um and we also talked about like broader like CommunityWide uh communication strategy and like aligning with um the city the county the chamber um to like where does um where do school Communications uh line up with what they're doing there probably a lot more to say but I don't think I can do it all Justice thank you Joe I was also at same meeting that I had to cut out early for financing facility so I'll toine when CH had said cover for me uh the finance and Facilities meeting we basically covered everything during this meeting so which is always kind of nice and on Thursday I get to uh be a part of the audit um going over the audit uh which is always a highlight I know I have issues uh that's all I have don't laugh that Christie oh boy um Southwest Metro meeting last week um I just have to say that Dr H is doing a fa job um he's in about 120 days now to being superintendent there um and is really moving into um what he calls A needs assessment I think he's meeting with all the super here coming up next week um and other teaching and learning staff members just to talk about um the support districts need what are some of the gaps um just you know talking a lot about um aligning our systems and how can we work better together to serve all the needs of our students um so that's just he's just been he's full of energy and and wants to do right for kids um we are bringing in some International teachers um uh they are getting some interest free loans to help them get uh situated here in Scott County um and then har Ministry is actually um DR Horton has hooked up with them and they're actually providing some of the basic necessities um that they need to you know for a house or an apartment um just to get started here in America when they arrive um obviously these teachers come and um their intent is to bring their families at some point um to be to live here in the United States so this is really a stepping stone for them so it's a really cool program um Had State High School league board meeting and state tournaments is they in full swing now um the vote uh for the nth grade governance took place uh that has been completed and more information I believe will be coming out about that in the very near future from what I understand and then head an msba board meeting as well since our last Shak board meeting and those uh the assembly there were 70 resolutions that we submitted this year they will not all make it to the delegate assembly but that's what's the starting point um so there's there's a lot it's a budget year so um yeah just a lot of them um and then the leadership conference is coming up I'm sure you've been getting emails if you haven't got a mailer just got the postcard so that's January 15th and 16th so the keynote speaker for the opening day I've actually seen um fabulous um the way he incorporates music and the learning and education it's he's phenomenal so try to mark your calendars to be there for that and last but not least I finished up one thing one commitment my three-year term as a mlab for truste um completed on the 22nd of October yay so one L thing off my count things to do what you do I don't know um yeah and I just want to give a shout out to our girls swim swim team conference champs for the first time in 37 years I think it was um and they start their sections in two weeks so good luck to them and State football hopefully the team keeps rolling they played really well on Friday night and can't wait to go again this Friday another home playoff game and which will be the the year and hopefully he'll keep rolling see him playing at the I was going to say the US Bank Stadium um in a couple weeks so that would be pretty awesome because I don't think Shaka has ever made it that far I think so right thank you um I have the finance of facilities committee meeting and I'm good so I don't know how I'm going to going to follow all I just I already talk about policies I can talk about the 100 or 200 I do get the Southwest Metro newsletter um and your point because like it it's worth to read just some really good stuff uh going on there so it's and again kudos to the new superintendent there uh and you you failed to mention your uh your other uh recent committee committee involvement over at uh GN ReSound oh yeah uh we were there representing although we weren't nearly as cool as uh you know Sandy sa he was giv out free high high fives that adorable little girl and the uh you know the the update District update got her fair share of free high fives and eventually wanted a picture so just it was good to be part of that a lot of representation from City shaki and commerce just to welcome those folks um just wrapped up the mountain bike season uh well I haven't pered results uh Statewide following the uh final race but uh we had the largest team this year student athletes in 94 student athletes um so that's great and I will be par participating uh in tomorrow's event and watch what we're gonna we're going to learn from our uh our student school board members and see what we should should be doing as a board so I look forward to that as well um so we had the community engagement today talked about the upcoming career fair that's happening on Friday um we talked about culture Fest and the student School Board event tomorrow I was able to attend last year was really awesome I know some of us will be representing that um we talked about the read mobile partnership and kind of piggy back up what Chad said we were just kind of thinking about how to engage and who to bring in uh for each monthly meeting or actually quarterly and I think you know new Connections in like the Sali Community as well um and you know getting a current contact for Scott County so I mean we're doing really great things in the community engagement we're trying to tie back some of the goals that we have here in to incorporate that into the community engagement and overc commit but just kind of take it in strides and focus on that Michelle I mean everyone's kind of already cover covered the uh Community engagement meeting so I won't touch on that too much but obviously the student School Board uh students School Board member event tomorrow obviously looking to another productive session I'm looking forward to talking with a lot more um a lot many more students from different schools so that'll be interesting seeing it's 25 schol this is what the largest of this number of attendees how many we have last you remember yeah I think it was around 15 it was slightly under 20 yeah I remember because last year I remember talking about maybe getting to seven districts to this time a lot bigger so it'll definitely be a good experience um other than that um yeah like Piggy backing just thinking about new new events to go on to and with that in mind the um musical going and so I'm inlo Orchestra so if you guys ever uh should come to the musical Guys and Dolls Michelle do you know are there more districts that have student School Board representation since last year or is it just more want to participate in the development session or a combination thereof I remember last year there was uh the school district it's on the top of my tongue but there was a school district I was talking to and they had come to the meeting or to the event to kind of look for more guidance on how to implement a student School Board um member on and actually um like I was talking with them and they actually happen to do that so through the event last year they manag do that but I don't know exactly like how many more people have added since then and they do have a significant am I don't know how many districts across the state that question been many and msba doesn't have a good record system for that because it's not well and technically elected right it's a position however I know they're looking how do we track that and um sometimes districts will have really engaged students and then the next year they they won't have any I I've had District some that too so it's kind of EV and blows a little bit well and represented so well last year at the msba conference as well yeah so you know I mean and I and I remember um last year uh a couple of two or three or four school districts I talked to um the students I actually sent weren't EX officio um school board members but actually they were just perhaps um student council presidents but they were just like prominent students in the community that were willing to speak up and act as a voice vocal representative so and even if they weren't official they all obviously they're looking to kind of like act an officially so I have a followup question of that areia Chu be one of the oldest like programs with the student board policies because I know Daniel and other they were the primers first but I know there were other districts that have students before us um and the idea came up at the leadership conference that we first went to in 2019 and we really wanted to do it and then Co hit and that delayed us from starting the program so there are other districts that have had them for a while but I couldn't tell you who the first one was what is are we the most involved then in like extending this program and like teaching other people how to do other districts and so Dr I'd like your perspective on this because I know that we had talked about it but if Shak is going to do something we want to do it well so it isn't just let's follow what other districts are doing let's have an intent and purpose but Dr yeah I I don't you know I don't know for the most involved I think we've been very involved the last couple of years and I think it's a just a variety of circumstances where we've been willing to kind of whatever um you know stick our necks out lead and share and you know and that's uh you know with the presentation at the annual conference with us hosting last year um so we we have in a way kind of right now we're we're at least known as a district that is really committed number one to just listening to student voice and student agency but also how do we develop and how do we make the role of student School Board member even more impactful than it already is and so we're committed to that and I think we learn really well from listening to other places where they're trying to do you know often something very similar and they've got different ideas and it helps us grow and develop and um so yeah it's kind of yeah student school board members at least the last couple years has kind of been associated with Shaka public schools which is pretty cool um you know and again we get that kind of attention with the Academy of Shak we one of two high schools in in the state that has wall toall Academy so we're getting other schools that are reaching out there's at least one District you know Hastings that is looking at kind of both you know looking at possibly becoming part of the Ford NGL and and having a you know anmy program there and also looking at student school board members so as we've got more connected with them they're like hey we want to learn more about this so I don't know for the most but uh you know I know that we're really committed to it definitely we do definitely a leader and people see us as sincere and genuine in that which I think is really important and the person that was really um passionate about making sure that we got it off the ground here in shot to be a former board member is actually going to be at the meeting tomorrow so I'll make sure I introduce her to you and actually answer your question I remember I talked at the conference the msba conference last year with uh Farmington they had their student school board on Reps for over like they've had representation for a decade so I I would say that was probably anything else M oh sorry no that's about it for me sh I don't have any updates School Board wise but I'm not sure if you guys know but Mr Christian I he's a social studies teacher at the high school we have started the National History Day Club um I like to describe as a science fair but with history projects so we so last year was at Pioneer year so we were like testing it out like getting and go for the district contest the state contest um but this year we've gotten a lot of middle school memberships um at least 15 kids so far people we just started recruiting so that's something we might even get like a Schoolboard teacher like Mr Fish and talking about coming presenting stuff to you guys yeah please do that's something near and dear to my heart U my oldest son is a middle school social studies teacher in Shaban he has been in charge now for I don't know six eight years of the National History Day and it is a it's quite an investment of time and energy but it's super awesome so I I when you start talking about that that just makes me smile because I see it through through the eyes of my my son who's a teacher 100% I think History Day like even if you aren't interested in like history or social studies especially if you do at a super young age like at a middle school level you learn a lot of research skills a lot of like how do you actually study and like read an article and make a project that's completely yours that belongs to you thank you Tiffany you know chair Smith I just focused on a great event tomorrow tomorrow have a whole another set of things but I have nothing further to more than F Jim uh just another shout out to our girls swim team and the first conference title in 37 years um and U you know uh hard to believe we only have I think eight days left in the first quarter a week from Friday it'll be a grading day and uh we'll be 25% of the we through the school year so time flies when you're having fun wow actually Jim I'm glad you WB that up we are WCCO will be 'll be the tomorrow around 2:30 with Matt Hansen and I to interview Jenny Carlson and it'll be a feature in the women in sports in Minesota so it was was an
