right good evening everybody welcome starting with our uh favorite portion of of every meeting is our a saber Pride item on the agenda and we will start with item 3.1 youth art month alumni Spotlight and here to present is Tiffany olon our director of communications and strategic development and Rachel Paulson the shop High School teacher and you'll you'll be welcoming some some guests I will I will thank you Sheriff Smith and members of the board since I've testified I've remember that Robert's rulle that to make sure I address the entire board after night I'm [Music] trying um I'm here briefly to set the stage I am not the person you're going to be hearing from tonight you going to be so excited about what Miss Fon and also um Andy Brown the activities director that we have here in the district that you're familiar with um it's really very doing that we're here today because they wanted to share an incredible story said I think there's something to this and I said yes there is because we do have um youth art month which is March it ends on Monday but beyond just art and in general there's so much to the story that uh Rachel is going to introduce our guests of honor former graduate we also have another graduates in the audience as well um but today they are going to share a story about chinny and just everything from mentorship Evolution um just so many incredible things and there's even some fun little tidbits that you learn about logos and things that shy also contributed to so I will be Anna white and walking things around so you can see as much of her work as possible but miss ps's gonna also intro a little bit better on some of specifics well good evening um I am here to introduce chinny and um I first heard about chinny when she was a middle school and the art teachers were saying you should just wait just wait until you get to work with chinny and uming talent and of course she made it up to the high school and um ended up having her as a student for first time teaching her AP art where she built a an AP portfolio for college credit and then she went on to um be a cap student she was the very first group of cap students when it was called digital design shter life and um so I it was just a pleasure having her and I knew that somebody with um the amount of talent that she had um had really high hopes of U we had really high hopes of her um pursuing some creative careers so tonight she's gonna share with us her path um the last several years and how it's taken her through a bunch of creative um careers and she's going to share some work with us and um we should May men yeah sure so uh so I had uh jeny wound up in my earbook class I actually had um Casey who was sitting right here Casey was in my earbook class even the year before that and is uh one of the hardest workers and most creative people I've ever seen and ever met as a student and then Casey said well you'll meet jny this next year next time around he told me she was coming to join the class and that she was way more talented and better than him I think that's probably something you proba said something like that um and so uh anyway so they helped the yearbook Jenny made all of the designs for the senior year year book I believe 2016 right yeah the cover and all these specialty Pages within and um she was remarkable because we kind of just like talk about an idea during class and she'd show up the next day with like the greatest design ever and then would say something like I don't know it's okay maybe we'll get it better next time um and then and then the next day would come up with like a significant Improvement on just amazing so yeah so we were really overpaying you for that year yeah yeah if that job had a s attached to it I'd return it but it was um but so then uh so post sort of graduation and stuff uh Casey has younger siblings um who are involved in the Performing Arts a lot in theater so I would see Casey on the routine and then sometimes jeny coming with them so this last fall when they came back um they had some pretty cool stuff to share so that's what kind of got it on our radar I won't take any more time yeah so she sent me this this text and she said I hope I made you proud Miss Bon and it was this this amazing line of products that is now and kept um at uh all Targets Nationwide so we thought we would um start with that and that's how we came here tonight so and I must say too we have never had a saber Pride guest contributes such a beautiful presentation the communications did not make any of this animation and she asked if it was okay absolutely so everything you see was just her and her spare time this weekend contributing to this moment so chinny what brought you to Shaka and what sparked your interest in art design so me and my sister was here back in 201 about 14 years ago from in ter of like what me I feel like I up in a family of like Creator Chef we have Gardener phographer and feel like my blood and I just happen to enjoy drawing and I think I'm pretty lucky to have parents who kind of supported me in my interest since I know bu like equipment materal materials yeah and then took me to like class tutoring I learn how to do like life drawing grade so tell us a little bit about your experiences at sh High School how that how that development um contributed to developing those skills in your career so like I said my parents always supported me as the hob you know when you think of art that's equal starving artist of the Korea that was my will whe as far as I go so before I met Miss Bon I was dead set on going to Business School when I told her that in gave class and she was like nope you're not doing that so then she introduced me to Mr Rutherford who got my CIS physics teacher at the time he had a sister who worked in uxui design and she kind of helped me get that conversation going with him kind of leing more like just more than to just pen and P paper the career behind like art it can be more than just fine art so then after that in he told me about this program at MCAT uh it's a summer program about five weeks long that allow high school student to experience um college life so I took a class there for the summer I took a graphic design program and that was kind of the first time that I was in a room full of so many Talent people and that like they show me that there definitely a a career in you know in art so then after that I joined like talk say C uh I mean c CS program uh every week we have this guest speaker from s of fly coming in to talk to us kind of tell us day-to-day life what's it like and that's pretty much when I decide like yep was right and C it is no more business school so then I think during the cap because it was the first program that ever happened in sh they were hiring um video production company called CAP media which that's when I met Jenna Jenna met who was doing the video production during my time as an internship at Canterbury and fast forward a couple years she messaged me in linol was like oh do you remember me I was following you doing CS program I was wondering want to join our team cuz we looking to expand our design department so it's like good cing I guess so I entered at C and then after I graduated incad I was full time with them so really if it's not because you know my educator who show me the path I would have been here today in front of you so just really thank you for the botom of my heart you were chosen as a feature designer at Target creating the pybay brand so if you've heard of um pyay they they have all these Electronics um phone case covers and um all this these gadgets right and so tell us a little bit about how you were selected for this and what it was like working on that project um I think I'm going be lucky in term of like whole people coming and out of my life on my path um I was selected because my friend who also graduated from mcad was selected before me a couple years before and she kind of recommended my name and then that's how they kind of found me out and I got pick out my name got pick out from their pile of recommendations so that's kind of how I got selected um the whole process was took about five weeks about a yearo last fall two years ago last fall I get to kind of learn about the process of mass production and you know really just they show me so much the team at um at Target uh show me kind of letting me sorry so they show me so much about like the production um process and letting me choosing the material so it's kind of cool to get to choose the specific for the phone case and get to design Implement a little bit of my culture into the design and then I think it's really fun process and I'm kind of proud myself to you know think looking back like this is immigrant kit out of nowhere now have my name everywhere across the country and all the packages it's pretty cool so so um what were some of the biggest challenges you face in your career so far and how did you overcome them so when I was at Captivate media it was the production company I graduated with illustration and graphic design um program so what I I was able to learn a lot from captiv because you know they have a lot of Animation animator um they were graceful enough to let me a couple of the projects and kind of risk project which get me into doing a lot of um concept design work animation work teach me a little bit about the program but at the time because it was a video video company I wanted to learn more about graphic design job but I wasn't because I was young graphic designer in a video video production company I couldn't I didn't have any peer that I could learn from I don't have any Mentor so that was kind of when I decided to join metronic I appli for metronic and now been with them for the past three and a half years with a team of 20 graphic designer my with like people with different skills pretty much living every day have way so like my I'm aacer from engineer no big deal he was also in the same group of cat students and AP art students that year so so fun and were you a cell phone model as well in the one side good C is there any yeah I know thank you for coming tonight and sharing your story super powerful and it was hard for us to not ask her 30 questions we narrowed it down to here we could sit and talk forever um but is there anything that the board would would like to ask CH so kind of flashing back to 201 how much of theology but that balance between art and computer design how much that influen this transation how like how has technology changed in the last 10 years right now topic is I think we are now kind hours and now just like a second click one button and it's done and it save us like five hours of questions we for well deserved appuse awesome job [Applause] thank you next our agenda is item 3.2 winter Athletics update and we have a lot to celebrate and here to present is our Athletics director Matt Hansen all right thank you all Tiffany where would you like this good this is great I'm not going to mess with great this uh so Coach Alex Van kin's going to talk a little bit about our wrestling season uh obviously something that we can be really really proud of so I'll let him go and fill in any blanks so go ahead coach all right sorry I was just some some some highlights first just want to thank you guys for having us um it's been a really great year for us the support from Shak was amazing so um really successful um this is my my fourth year here um just team wise it was it was the best finish that we've had um and then just being culture wise it was it was fantastic so we were 28 and2 on the year both the both loses were the St Michael which is a top Point team in the nation uh we were conference Champs section Champs we took second at the national duels uh beat a couple national rank teams actually got us in the national rankings as mention team um we had 11 earn 10 All Conference wrestlers this year out of 13 nine out of 13 weights plus we had that one of our girls got it um State Runners up and then one of the things that we had this year that we haven't had before that I'm super proud of is we were on the uh we won the gold plaque for GPA so we had a team average at 3.5 or higher uh and I believe there's only 16 triaa teams in Minnesota that were able to do that so it was something that I I really striving for with the boys um so I was super proud of that and outside of that it was just the was fantastic to have we had about 45 wrestlers in the room this year um just a really successful season on and off the that I really enjoyed this C crew so I'm obviously the seniors know I'm going to miss him so um individually wise we had uh seven placers for boys and two placers for girls um we had we have a few placers here Kyler took second in state he'll put your hand up Jasmine took six in State uh Kelvin took fourth in state and then we have a couple of St Champs that couldn't make it there actually I know one of them is at least training right now um so you know there was Jackson was my first state champ as at coach so I was pretty excited about that so overall a lot of fun uh we have one wrestler going to wrestl in college here Tyler's going to go to Northern Illinois and wrestl and college so we're really proud of him about that so yeah it was a great year guys any questions for our wrestling team if you want to come up we'll take a photo certain wasn't sign wrest perfect t [Applause] smaller crew for the next one next two but doesn't diminish uh so coach yeah still has the hockey hockey D but course uh coach Simon and our boys hockey team uh made to State first time 20 years first time as a daa school so uh just a huge accomplishment a couple really cool venues to play up at let you speak about the season well sure I guess I'll first just say uh thank you to everyone for having us here and it's an honor and privilege and hopefully something that we uh do consistently moving forward and have a lot of success uh in the ice arena was a fun year uh I think I'm finally fully decompressed uh from the just you know nonstop go six days a week with the kids um and grinding through the season getting a little extra Runway to to hang out with them for four extra games than we ever had in pass through the state tournament um I think prior to last couple of days um although it's literally the best season we've ever had in program history played the longest achieved the most um utterly disappointed because we truly believed and thought we were going to you know win it all and and be the state champion at the end of the year so took a lot of guts from Carson steinhof here and the rest of our guys to kind of be vulnerable and believe in themselves to go for it do something that had never been done before last year we had a lot of success too first time we had won 20 games at the daa level uh we won our first Conference Championship which had never been done any time in 50 some years we've been doing hockey so that was great um and this year we're able to repeat his conference champions this time undefeated um and then do what we had done sections make it through win some tough games be a good came you get another program first had to beat them and then win the section championship and watch him and his his buddies and peers all clown up on the glass and look at their their students in the in the student section and uh let them know we're getting out of school we're going to go down to the X and try and win through more games and then we found ourselves you know practicing preparing for a really good St Thomas team at that point everyone's really good right it's the final eight and um you we thought we played okay first period we gave them one in the first two minutes they scored on us maybe watched um we knew that something like that may happen it's a lot of nerves a lot of energy um we say all the time can you win the game in the first period boys say no can't win in the first so un fortunately we were able to get one back later on in that period and so we walked out there one1 reset and we're a second period team so we feel really confident about our situation um and I and we dominated the second period we really outplayed him it was our Puck we put a ton of pressure on them uh we have a really good goalie they have a really good goalie um our goalie finish the season number two and uh goals against average and their goalie finish number three in the state goals against average so we couldn't crack them uh and walked into the the third period uh looking at the coaches and like that was better and I was just like but we didn't score and now it's anyone's game so third perer came and uh we didn't capitalize on our power play opportunity and they did everyone's good so just was too difficult for us to to get a goal in and end up losing that game and then that Thursday rest of that night uh was extremely difficult to just process the moving forward okay there still hocky to be played um through wind back to 2005 um I was just 17y old boy and a junior in high school um and I was a part of the group that first got to go to the state tournament we were single at the time and we lost that first game and we lost the second game we talks about that part we just talk about how we won the section and state um and so I kept preaching to the boys like we cannot go to barbecue like it's the worst feeling it's just we'll stop talking about this experience the way we are right now and just really pressed on them to believe that it's still worth it to play hard play as a group and we only get two days left together anyways and really impressed beyond anything we did the season the way that they red as a group um and went and showed up and really played great hockey watch watch hockey so we were able to beat Andover who was the state champion just a few seasons ago and then finished the season beat Lille sou conference opponent which turned into a little bit of a secondary rivalry and fun spirit game so it's was good to get those guys the final game and send the guys off with the D which first time we' ever done long winded but it's a little bit of some of the recap and I yeah the the only other thing I would add is in September we got called to be part of something that was going to be pretty special and that was dream state and so I'm not sure Tiffany might have at least the front of it cool but uh this group basically got filmed from the time we did pre- skates so like Captain type practices all the way through the very last game of the season and so it's a three episode series we've already been through two of them another one comes out you don't tomorrow tomorrow so tomorrow night it'll it'll finish tomorrow night and the ultimate goal of Dreams state is to have somebody be filmed in Wind state so we felt just a little short but what's really cool is it tells the history of you know shocky hockey and then it walks through you know some of the stuff that happened throughout the year and so I commend our group it was interesting kind of just listening to some of the stuff going on is they always had a coach with a mic and sometime that's not the best thing to happen good bad or in different games but uh they said there's plenty of bloopers that we'll be able to watch at some point are listen to um but that's a really big challenge for you know 15 18 year olds is you're kind of always being watched and I thought Kelvin and his group just did a great job and and the the wild who put it on was a pretty special thing so just uh across the board it was a banner year for him and although we didn't get the ultimate goal it was it was quite ride and something that we won't forget so I appreciate timey being here they've got uh was it seven seven of our players are playing Junior so that was kind of the reason for not a whole lot of able to be here tonight but I say we got guys and juniors which is another really cool thing and just to quickly give you a breakdown of how that works there's an option when you're high school student if you are so choosen by the junior teams to do what's called before and after you can do both or one part of that so really it's before the high school season and after the high school season participate with these junior level clubs in hockey it's a little different you don't typically go right from high school regardless of how good you are straight to the NCAA and play college hockey was kind of a pit stop in the the junior ranks and so um a lot of our guys are kind to earn in their stripes now Carson was just down in Omaha for a week with Omaha Lancers in the USHL and so he came back because he's also got affiliations with the Minnesota Mard in a different league and that's closer to home and he gets game time experience with them so he's living at home now able to play with them grind a practice said said earlier today um we've got Cooper Simpson scored his first goal back with tri city in the USHL he was our our lead goal scorer with 49 goals and Mr Hockey fin us he's just really really good at hockey so we've got a handful other guys P the other one in the USHL with the Lincoln star so all three of you guys are kind of in the same area down Nebraska but yeah some Junior guys and we got few others that are also playing awesome thank you thank you appreciate thank you thank you appreciate boys aot callion appreciate it thank you awesome thank you guys thank you and last but not least is coach d you sit see the good or he coach Do's team just finished up so they had banquet last night and had a little bit of a mix wires on communication for tonight but um yeah just super proud of their effort this this past week and brought us back to state so we'll let Coach talk a little bit about the season um yeah it was it's a um we always talk about how the season is a journey but certainly was the case this year we had a lot of um players of returning experience from last year to start the year a couple promising JV players that um led us to a preseason ranking and a lot of nice things and complimentary things from just the Minnesota basketball area that was set about us um which was great and exciting and there was a lot of excitement the season did not start I guess the way that have expected um we had some injuries um there's kind of a carryover of some of the Fall Sports and just transitioning our bodies to being basketball ready um Health sickness kind of every obstacle and challenge that you face as a team all kind of hit in December and so we turned the page of the new year at 5 and four and doing some sou searching and doing some humbling reflective work on what we um as coaches and as players were doing I think going through that really set the stage for the the latter half of the year and sometimes when you go through that stuff you learn valuable lessons on what it takes to be a true team and what it takes to find the success that that you want and I'm just really proud of the guys as as we turn the page of the New Year we We want to compl 16 or 17 games in a row um we got a first run by a one seat in our section played an outstanding game in our section final against rival Prior Lake came down to the Wi back and forth one of those just alltime great basketball games and um this past week was a bit of a rwind in the state tournament um won our first game and then lost in a kind of a heartbreaking way in the thds day semi-final but through all that I'm just really proud of how together our kids remain and how how much this season was a just the the team reent the team um centered approach that all of our players took something that I'll really remember these these players for especially senors and I know that uh WCCO did a piece at the end of the week last week on it so after Pho yeah and so obviously with uh you know I think the 16 17 game winning streak was obviously really cool brought us to the point I don't know I know some of you the crowd against Prior Lake that was one of the alltime best atmospheres we've had and with a couple minutes left I was telling coach after we won it was a lot easier but you kind of had that feeling like it might not be your night and you can just kind of like feel at least to me because I feel like I've been pretty close to this group too is like your heart starts sinking when you're down a few and you're like we're not getting the buckets we're used to getting and then I think it was probably one of the best defensive performances by our kids I don't think the last three minutes of the game missed a couple front ends of one-on ones which would have been easier to to Salt it away but it was really cool atmosphere and last week even though it was a fourth place finished it was it was an outstanding season I think it's ready but what got this team deep in the postseason is something worth celebrating marel moers what's so special about this saber roster nection on the court for the Sabers is undeniable it's what this program credits for getting them here to Target Center I still can't like process it I mean I'm with I'm at the state tournament with my brothers like this a dream I've dreamed about since I was in fourth grade with them eight seniors on one roster already an unusual sta but get this seven of them have been playing together for N9 years including their five starters I think right away right off the J we started clicking this Brotherhood met in the Shaka youth basketball program in fourth grade this is where the bond began everybody doing everybody's job if some person messes up someone else right behind him to pick his job up it's like we just got a bunch of Brothers on the team that first year together a teen dad took on coaching responsibilities and never left I've been so fortunate to uh stay on this journey with these guys all the way through their senior year of high school chasing ctis in the Courtside huddle still leading and encouraging these boys including his own son Isaac nearly a decade later for me as a coach the the best part of getting to the state tournament is one more leag I get to spend with these guys this kind of chemistry allows s's head coach Jake D to lead on the leadership among his players trust for sure but beyond that just confidence that um you know we built our program on togetherness on selfless team first basketball six of these seniors intend to play college ball next year while they're all going to different schools they're all staying in the Upper Midwest and have plans to support each each other in the St this group is very special and we're not going to our B we're just going to come back together family reunion in sh WCCO Sports all right thank you and we had one other individual qualified for state and that was Charlie Cuts with our swim team uh but they are finishing up their banquet right now as we speak so he couldn't be here but coach Eric Hills had this to say about our swimming dive team uh they had great season finished fourth place in the South suburan Conference uh Charlie qualified for the class doublea State meat in the 100 breast um he had the 12th fastest time in the state going into the meat ended up dropping down to 10th place after the prelims and then in finals he dropped and had his personal best uh which he ended up finishing in ninth place and the state meet you go off of your finals um as far as what team points go so he earned nine points so individually himself he qualified our team and we finished in 32nd Place so that's kind of cool for one individual to get your 32nd Place but um I know that coach Hills has U seen a little bit that a couple years ago we were just really outstanding and then kind of swimming is a interesting sport where you kind of es and flows and and we're back on the way up again so I know that coach Hills was really excited about this year and then Char had a great year for boys swim our next group is our Co-op group and um the nor ski team we had uh 12 skiers for Nordic ski uh which was our biggest number since we started our co-ops we co-op with Burnsville for both Nordic and Alpine skiing um and our Nordic ski team had the our highest Place finisher was Colin Hokinson who was our all conference honory for Nordic ski so uh it's not a sport that we can probably come to you guys and asked to be on our own yet so it's nice to have a partnership with Burnsville in that um and Colin did a great job he was also our triaa winner so we recognized him this weekend at the AAA banquet which is a really outstanding honor so not only is he a cross country Runner Nordic Skier uh does track but also is an our Jaz band so just an outstanding individual for for Colin uh and then our Alpine Ski we had a few less than our 12 we had five Alpine skiers this year same thing we co-op with Burnsville for Alpine skiing um there's a opportunity for Richfield maybe to join our partnership as well and just with alpine if you're starting to shrink in numbers you go out and try to get a few more to try to get a full team so you can score more points but uh again super appreciative of fville for that opportunity for Alpine and then gymnastics we've kind of been on a roller coaster with gymnastics we were with Eden Prairie for a couple years uh Eden Prairie had asked it's common um to kind of dissolve some of these at the same time so they had said it' be probably work for them to have somebody a little bit closer to them on the North side to partner with so we dissolved one Co-op started one with Prior Lake this year uh but we did not have an athlete this year so the one benefit to the gymnastics one is um if we work with Prior Lake in the future we'll be able to get it out a little bit earlier this was a little bit later and then the head coach is actually one of our teachers so the hope is that maybe that will drum up some interest for for gymnastics so those are our co-ops uh and then we had adapt to floor hockey again this year and they are the Southern Stars couple pictures of them up there they just completed their third season and adapted floor hockey so this is a team that's made up of Shak and Prior Lake athletes um we didn't necessarily have the most success on the floor but with adaptive floor hockey it's definitely not about the success of much as just giving kids opportunities and again uh had plenty of kids out which is a really uh fun thing to give kids opportunities for that and uh coach Iverson does a great job another coach over at PRI coach Julie uh just if you ever walk in they're just having so much fun and so look at the scoreboard if you want to but at the end of the day it's just nice to see everybody having a good time out there and it's a great opportunity for us so uh that's adap to floor hockey uh our dance team uh so as we've discussed we've got a very very good conference and section um that we compete in so our conference Champion is East View they were also the state champions uh so that's a tough way to go into the conference season and then um our section is pretty loaded as well so uh but we had a great year we hosted a regular season invite we hosted the SS championships and the section Championship so it was a really big uh heavy lift for our parents this year hosting really big events uh but we took another big step in the right direction we finished the uh best we ever have in the Jazz division so we're eighth place in the section which is two spots above uh finished in 10th place for kick which is kind of where we've been the last couple years but there's been steady growth in the last few years with dance which is hard to do um especially kind of where we compete so uh coach Sam has done a really really great job Addie and Addie were our uh madt All State performers this year so pictures are right there so that's our dance team um and then girls basketball we a little bit of a Down year for girls basketball in our standards we were six and 21 we were eighth place in the um conference we were the seven seed we went to play Prior Lake unfortunately we did not win that game in our first round game um but we're battling a few injuries throughout the year uh just kind of never got to our footing uh one of the big highlights this year was coach Juan Mitchell um he won his 300th game this year against d uh the also sad part about this year is coach Mitchell uh just told us a couple weeks ago that this year was going to be his last year so we're actively in the process of finding a new coach but um S Hall was our lone all conference honory this year and so we're a younger group so basketball as a whole for girls was very senior dominant so we look to have uh a little bit better year next year and then we'll welome a new coach as well and then finally for me it's girls hockey and girls hockey had a nice bounce back um last year we were dealing with some some stuff that was bigger than hockey and so it was going to be interesting to see how we bounce back and this year we had a much better season we were a couple games over 500 at 1311 and two six place in the conference um we were on the road against Prior Lake that kind of ended up being one of our people we played quite a bit this year in sections but we lost a heartbreaker 2-1 in overtime it was a great game for for girls hockey it was just fantastic uh but we ended up losing 2 to1 in overtime led by a couple seniors uh Hannah Grabowski and Cali Peterson and then our best bowler was Brook Fry at the end of the year and she played great throughout the whole way and uh one thing we didn't mention with the boys but the girls as well is they both got to participate in that hockey day Minnesota at Valley Fair and we saw a few of you out there is just a outstanding um you thing in in the winter time this year so it was really fun um something they can be proud of I know the community as a whole really rallied around that uh came together um partnership with smsc was really instrumental to make it happen so as you can see on the side it's not a great picture but uh smsc designed custom jerseys for the event and it was Top Notch all around the way so it was kind of a great way where we maybe didn't have the greatest season uh for girls they had a good season but not great but that was kind of a big highlight so any questions on our winter sports I want to know what Spring's going to do how many more States yeah yeah spring has a lot to live up to I can tell you that so when you you know follow up how our girls swim and football did and then winter you know kind of the the main three boys sports go it's it's been a a whirlwind seven weeks I can tell you we started February first hosting section dance which feels like two or three years ago and then uh yeah we just finished seven seven weeks from that day was where boys finished so basketball so was a fun but uh we're ready to turn the page so and if I might U just thank you to you and your office this time of year is incredibly busy every year but uh it was extra busy this year and you know I thought things went really really well and you know kind of that organization care of things and you know the departures to State and a lot of lot of extra work a lot of fun extra work but it's still work and it takes a lot of time for you and the rest of our athletics department staff and so thank you for for all you did appreciate that yeah the the one thing similar to the hockey day it can't be done without the village and I just feel like the Community Partnerships are unbelievable and people really come out of the woodwork when we have some of this stuff and please fire smsc BL and fire I've always been a part of that stuff so um and it's just amazing how many ticket requests you get the last minute it's fun it's a good it's link in this information item which is our forward facing page for student School Board applications it is that time Michelle will be graduating and Sha's got a lot of great things that she's been working on and is excited to have a member join so we opened up last week uh the application process we've extended it through April 11th so our hope is through some uh face-to-face communication that shaie and Michelle will be a part of at the high school and in various classes and also some general promotion uh that we will get some great candidates as we always do to interview the week of the 14th you'll see the interview team that's on there and then you'll be presented at the April 28 meeting with the proposed candidate with the term starting July 1st happy to answer any questions otherwise we're very eager to like I said get some great candidates to interview it's always exciting interviewing these candidates just like sh here they're all they're all amazing and just really uh inspiring speaking speaking to respective school board members next on our agenda is item 8.1 budget update and here to present is Bill maazi our Director of Finance and operations welcome Bill thank you good evening on the screen you will see the general fund budget update as of February 28th uh this is a document that we look at each month and I just have a couple of highlights that I'd like to bring to your attention starting first on the revenue side and the general fund as of the end of February we have collected 56.4 s% of our revised budget total of 126.2 n million that's compared to 54 4% in the prior year and 52.4% in the second prior year again I just like to call your attention to the local fees interest role where you can see that we have collected 3.1 million of a budget of 2.8 million uh you'll recall from previous months uh I I do we record in the finance department all of the interest throughout the year in the general fund and then break that at the end of the year that the process we're going to continue throughout this year and then maybe we'll change that process so I don't have to bring this up every month uh next year when we move forward um other than that on the revenue side I don't see any material variances from Budget on the expenditure side I would like to call your attention to the top role under salary and wages uh you can see that our revised budget is 7444 million and have spent year to date as of the end of February 43.25 million on salary wages and so you can see that the current year we've spent 58.7% that's 2% higher than last year so 2% in and up itself is not a large percentage but 2% to 74 million is a big number uh so I went back and you know it's kind of follow me a little bit on this here um last year was the first year of the sea contract um and we settled that the board settled that contract it was brought to school board approval in June of 2024 and so when we're looking at actual expenditures February of 2025 and comparing that to actual expenditures February 2024 the February 2024 number would not include the retro pay for the first year of the contract because it wasn't settled as of this month so that's the main driver for the 2% variance there um um I had historic or previously been talking about the number of payrolls that has since caught up now um with with the prior year and so I was I was a little bit surprised to see that variant still exist but that's that's really the reason why is is it has to do with retro pay from the first year the future contract so we'll we will track that um this is an imperfect science when when comparing current year to Prior year it's the best that we have but um for reasons like this perfect science when when comparing those years so we'll continue to track it I do expect that to catch up especially when the retr pay back bills the the prior year later this spring um with that I'd be happy to take any questions if you have Bill what are you um from a federal perspective obviously there's a lot of unty and not sure what's going to happen there anticipating same L of income from the feds for special education and that sort of thing but what what have we thought about or anticipated what we to that re just even this budget year I mean we don't know right I mean it could be tomorrow it could not ever happen it can continue to have that same of income like we supposed to but thought thanks for that question I'll I'll answer it and then we did have an inter we had a conversation at the finance and Facilities committee meeting before this meeting about inart that topic um just to frame that up so our our federal grants account for about 2.3 million probably on here hopefully that's the right number U current year 2.4 million of our general fund total so it's an important amount of money right it's not a huge amount from a percentage standpoint but it's a very important categorical Revenue Source from the federal government um what I can tell you is that in the current year so so those payments we go in to the Department of Education website through a a software system called Megs and draw those down after they're spent right so what we're doing in the current year is making sure like we always do that we're keeping up with that drop cycle right so we're we're beefing up the frequency of that making sure that we're keeping up after those expenditures are incurred we're going in and drawing those down with with a good amount of regularity um and then the conversation that we had at the finance and Facilities committee and Dr Edmond help me out here if for some reason that amount changed um that 2.3 2.4 million we had a discussion whether or not that would be an appropriate use of some of our unassigned fund balance to account or something like that um that seemed to make sense in cont concept when we discuss it although it's not fully baked idea that seem to make sense in concept when we talk about finan facilities mik anything well yeah and I I think we're trying to watch all that stuff play out and it's certainly important I think what you hit on is most important you know we we have uh you know you have to actually expend the money before you you know go claim that we used to sometimes leave that till the end of quarter or whatever we're doing that much much more frequently uh I think from a large picture and and you know you're part of this too so you know where people are just trying to pay attention to what's happening I I think a lot of this where things kind of get announced uh in some other cases there was funding shut off then there was funding turned back on there have been a number of lawsuits and things so for us it's it's more our focus is more we're already committed to serving those students I we're going to continue to do that we're contractually obligated to most of the employees that provide that and I think the worst case scenario is if something like that happened and you had it shorted we would probably be looking at through that lens of yeah that's the type of financial whatever you want to call it uh you know I don't know uh usually think of it as a natural disaster or whatever but something similar to that but you would cover with the one time money if you on a sign fund kind crisis report type situation and then obviously you know sort that out what what would happen for the following fiscal year so the other question I had on top of that is special education expenditures forless within our budget expenditures where where does that hit and feral dollar we we have is a lot of that going to self for those services or how I'm trying to understand because obviously being a representative on that board if the money shuts off obviously that's what they do is provide services for a lot of what they do services for students with higher needs and what the public school off so I'm just wondering about how that back would happen to them yeah another good question first first part it would be on the third row under purchase services that that's not all of it obviously we're not we're not being self by um but you could if you wanted to but uh that that's where that expenditure sits in our budget is under the purchase Services um Federal programming so uh the bulk of that is is title one two and three and then our F Federal special ed programming and I no I don't believe that we we are sending any of those title or federal special ed dollars and I think just from a general standpoint that overview we've always boted the fact that the federal government is Ty picking up about 14% of our special education expenditures when they initiated idea the plan was for them to pick up 40 not 14 um meaning you know they're picking up 14% the state is picking up or our general fund has been picking up the other 86% so not going to say that 14% is not significant consequential it is um but just to kind of keep I think that adds some perspective to that 86% of our funding for our students of special needs typically does not come from the federal government y that's that's why we have yeah thank you Bill thank you next on our agenda is item 8.3 math curriculum implementation update and here to present our NCA summer the assistant director of LTE for elementary and Sarah leberg the assistant director of LTE for secondary welcome thank you first here to talk about n which I'm very excited to share with you um just to put some context around this process you'll actually see this timeline a few times tonight we'll be talking about litery and then our foundational F recomendation but this process was um done with a bunch of teacher teams probably two or three years to get to the board adoption which happened last spring so we want to give you just a really high level update on how that's going for elementary and our secondary teachers um Elementary did adopt thetive mathematics program and we have been continuing to meet as a teacher team our culation team this year it's a really fine tune um and and develop some clear indicators for we are doing in relation to this implementation and this is going to help us collect data on the Fidelity of that implementation um not just in the use of the resource but also those critical instructional practices that we believe will help us to really shift um and fully implement this curriculum so um first goal with the new implementation is just cracking those those seals open and actually getting in and that was our first quarter implementation goal and we had 100% of our teachers Implement and that is really in my opinion something to celebrate we have a lot of teachers um and so the fact that every single teacher is putting their best fo forward and using these resources is it's really um a wonderful thing and I know our teachers are working really really hard every day to implement this curriculum so in addition to that we know we want to go um opening the resources is the first step and then really having those those shifts um Des centering the classroom we call it where the teacher is empowering students I think in our compelling Vision we talk about student agency this curriculum is all about student agency and so these are some of those practices that we believe will shift from um kind of teacher directed practice to more students that are learning so um we are working through this and the process of actually collecting data that will be useful to our building site teams moving forward um it's in the initial stages it's messy it's hard but I think our teacher team is really committed to um figuring out a way to make this work and I'm fresh off observations with principal this morning we did around using this and it was really great conversation so we are really all learning this together at this point and we doing something with secondary math' aded mace for the beginning February weoc tasks so one of our hopes from this level with the ma Tas students are being to do increase so instead of just that Ro memorization orick Al concept that also thaty being used to engage students in critical thinking problem solving and exploration of knowledge our sixth or nth grade teachers are not going to park they've all been doing the vertical boards already this year so we hit the N of Benchmark early on in first semester so mid we wanted to push it a little further and see not just are we getting kids up to the vertical but what are we doing so that was really fun we walked through with principles and LTE coaches because we thought this is a great opportunity for us all to Norm what do we me when we engaging students in so it's a great way to do some album coaching with our school leaders and our LTE coaches so that we're all engaging in that observation process together and what we found was really cool we found that all of our teachers are using the vertical thinking white boards and they're all using what we want to finesse through Q4 is the board ruales and routine so every once in a while we won't have all of our Learners engaged and we want 100% of ourn engaged in that Ma so we want to finess those rituals and team students the boards and everybody doing that intellectual work we want to keep using that curriculum in a way that and finding ways to pushing students to more complex with about M and the other exciting thing that we have is we are going to be offering Vel OPP for Math teachers summer one is builds 100 which is like Basics ony and then building thinking classrooms 200 for teachers who already feel like they debled and they mastered some elements and they're ready take their pical practices so we're pretty excited about it any questions about ele second so I'm I'm flashing back I had the Sixth Grade Center one one with tablets right the digital learning coaches and I think you kind of spelled it out here with LTE and some of that coaching framework So within the educator space you're the adops you're G to have those that following you're have those that might need some additional support so it's come at peer toer or maybe unpack the vertical white boards it seems like you're like it feels like everybody's all in and Mak that effort is there support space kind of that parallel to what the digital living coach kind of would have been in that time frame to OB this pedy with math I have to look up pedy by the way that feel we should have tab know any we say a word that it's just not common speak it's just education I'm just glad I could say it but in terms of that support and is it LP that are kind of the coaches in this space is it peerto peer is a little bit everything no we trying we are trying to intentionally make it a little bit of everything I in the sased these of changes I think sometimes when only for change ising externally to your s so right now we have a combination L Ma bring next and they're going have a to work with our coaches we fing time to co refining and then also PCC how their claim so that ining thaty a little bit of for the professional development is that be like is that a compan class was that something that was kind of requesting or looking forward to or is it something that you guys just kind of collaborated that would be a good idea we brought the professional development consult L she did several days Elementary and secondary yeah so it's kind of back by popular demand and what we're being responsive to is some teachers don't want to repeat the whole original TR but not all of our teachers went last year some teachers want to repeat it because they felt like you know or other they didn't quite master the basics and then we've got teachers that wanted that higher level to push to the next level so so next next so you're done with the math right okay so next on our agenda is item 8.4 the the comprehensive literacy framework update and n and Sarah are here to present for that should I keep talking while bring the [Music] slides okay all right the last one yes okay sorry and this is an information item and then you'll be presenting an action item after this so just so we're clear the order I when we talk about our updates really we are giving you updates on that idea of quality core instruction and moving that quality core instruction forward developing student agency so you have seen this many times this is our comprehensive literacy framework and tonight I'm going to give high level updates on certain components uh from the LA here which is in November I believe so this is a big pilot year for elementary have seven six six different resources which again a lot for our teachers while they're implementing ma um and we are later tonight going to be recommending a foundational skills program to you I just want to make sure you're aware that this is kind of a two-phase adaption the first one will be tonight those foundational skills um and then a second recommendation later in May around the language comprehension side of so we are in our final pilot um we are doing arts and letters which is kind of a sister curriculum to Whitten wisdom um and that is published by great minds and um our teachers are very excited about this one they loved Whitten wisdom and they loved the results they got with students but it was very challenging on the teacher side of things so we are hoping that we see the same results with our hirers and also a better uh experience for the future a quick update on training um I'm going to just let you know that Pearson is on track to complete 100% of staff that have en ruled by June 1st we have our last Parts three and parts four virtual sessions on the April 25th ping day um Elementary oh sorry I wanted to also share with Pearson we have been doing monthly small group meeting Sarah and de Anderson um have created small groups within the building so we can process the content on a monthly basis I'm a part of that step glad one of our ly coaches was a part of that Sarah and Deborah also a part of that and we just engage in the content and talk through how it it's working um how they're applying the content in their classrooms um we've seen some really cool things with the early writers so that's been really fun to talk about and then Elementary um we have I've kind of broken down the percent of total elementary teachers that completed by June 2024 December 2024 will complete by June 30th and then of this year and then um the 20% up that year 2026 sorry um and just for reminder that this teachers had choice in which pathway they wanted to participate in can see early adopters right out of the gate with Shak the university and then another round of early adopters that did Fast Track this fall we currently have a fast track running and when I say fast it is fast this is a lot of time that they are investing to get this completed by June 30th and then we have our yearlong cohort which is what most districts do um they've been taking a full year to implement with our teachers but the feedback I have received from teachers is uh they've appreciated having choice in this process we know it's required we know we're going to do it but um they really appreciated having some choice in when they complete it so and secondary is still to be determined we have not yet uh been given the uh next step for secondary training quick update on our assessment system um you we talked about this in the there are some required tests that MBE has come out with um and we are in compliance with all of those but beyond just compliance we've really um taken and developed I think a streamlined process to get our teachers thinking about the data so uh when we have our screening windows we have a kind of a tried and true like stepped out process that we ask teams to go through and this is an example of where we have we had some coach ially um and they worked with it teams and um student student problem solving teams to kind of create this process that now our teams are leaning into without coach support and they're kind of working through this the dean of students um and and the building PLC needs to put this process in place how do we respond to our data how do we intervene how do we monitor progress so we're very excited about this it's been met with um a lot excited I think teachers seeing those results in real time when they're implementing these interventions and a quick last lastly the third testing window will open here very soon in May and we will be excited to kind of get some preliminary Data before we fully Implement our foundational skills curriculum so we can really see the before and after effects of that that re next steps for the compreh ly framework um our articulation team will continue to implement the foundational skills through the rest of this year should the board approve it tonight um and the goal of that will be to really figure out a support plan for next fall and we roll it out with all teachers um and then they will F tune a recommendation around language comp comprehension so they'll pilot and they'll come back in me with that recommendation we have our really big District literacy event kickoff that will happen May 29th and we are really excited to Market this and share this with our community and really have an opportunity to talk about our comprehensive literacy framework um promote literacy within the community kind of Kickstart summer reading we know we don't want to have summer slides so really getting people excited about that um and then sharing our resource hopefully um here's what it's going to look like here's what you can expect to see for your students at home and I will just diagraph a minute we through this implementation obviously parents have also been giving feedback to teachers we had a wonderful email from a parent to one of our first grade pilot teams that saw such amazing results from blly just in the month that they had started implementing um so we're excited to share that get it out in front of parents let them know if they can expect to home with their student next year and then also just celebrate like celebrate the joy the love of reading and promote that within the community so those are kind of some big things and then just starting to really focus on both Community Partnerships and being really strategic about that and very intentional with different initiatives that we put for right at the second level we are working hard to build out the same amazing infrastructures that exist in elementary so right now we've got two teams that are in the process of selecting curricula we got 68 and 912 team for English and language arts we've also submitted a grant for some funding and we will use this to F interventionist middle schoolo and have intervention science we were excited about it we got some passion teachers that are to and understand more about how to support students the other thing that we have started this year is this new resource we have a decision tree decision is what to all of ours at dat it wi similar to what you did with the K site it's just a little bit more buil and targeted second C thresh adct thats what kind of inter student needs interval inter asss going into this process I heard more than we have foundational skills our second we have students support foundational skills of our high school and once we' ran our data through this process we have at least a dozen students at the high school that need founds that's aam that is going talk to about lat that our elementary students and so now' identify who students are we also have tool that we called intervention very intensive but it is our best idea right now to provide that support for students have so we've got a couple teachers that are trying it at high school couple teachers that are trying it at the middle school want to make sure that it was before I just first thank you for the inth like overvie I did a little I love that like from teachers like the the UI like story is just it's an incredible collaboration in the space and you did talk about the intervention components that was what I was thinking throughs of whether it's the phonics oracy or fluency the masses but how do you implement like early detection um when some of those additional support um or additional student support is needed and even at the you know the Early Childhood level so you'd say probably between e and maybe second grade where it's detected and it was actually pretty compelling that you're seeing this even in secondary in terms of some of that foundational piece I guess the followup there would be how much of that is you know from early is it so Progressive or is it mul language Learners or is the jurney still out um so you know maybe how are these these tools or these literacy framework um contribute to that Filly detection and then the follow up what do we think is some of that additional supported at second first yeah well I think it's really important to know that this recommendation coming forth in a little bit is critical that early detection right because before you even assume there's anything anything going wrong for a student you want to make sure you have Solider one in place we call tier one just core classroom instruction right so we need a resource that is solid it's systematic um so that's kind of Step One is let's get every child this really high quality core instruction around foundational skills and then from there we have assessments built into that regular assessments through like a week or a unit and then those fast Bridge screeners are another three times a year kind of cast the wiet and we triangulate all of that to see do we have AUD fling in all of those different areas as a potential need for support for additional support um so that criteria drives our Title One Reading interventions our adset reading interventions at elementary um and then those PLC teams consistently coming back to that process that I was sharing they look at all of their students who FL two exclamation points single exclamation points and and try to figure out the r c what is it that causing it and then respond appropriately sometimes it isn't the reading that's causing it there's another factor or another consideration is taking place like being a second language learner right um so I think our teams are just getting so much more data late and using that to make those decisions stud consider student intervention 100 or 200 stud a Kon course in high schoolv the ones that are not all wish I had that I could look for it but I don't think it'll and well like this is the first I the same question why would you need a framework in secondary like I would have would have made the same um I guess maor reaction is probably not as much and we're hearing that's not the case so I didn't mean to string it up you I was just going so my background is an alternative secondary level and when you hit adolesence it's ack you're not students worlds would impact more than you know parents or adult in front of me tell me what to do we've got some magician teachers in the building that understand that importance of content stud thank on the the core training for the secondary folks is I've uh paid for school they all have that opportunity to to take that even though since like some early doors are taking that is that right that's a question we're waiting on the options are so so for those who are phase one told us that score train and then teachers will and then the phase two option going to need a different option with L time requirement the current participant are P yeah I sorry I totally dodged the I did not mean to they choose to do it yeah thank you so oh so this this is just just you this is just me Sarah's just abandoning you sorry is she gonna leave too so next our agenda is is an action item this item 9.1 the foundational skills K through 5 literacy and Niko will present and then uh we will vote again I shared this kind of process with you earlier for math but I just want to put the context around how this has worked for ELA so this is two years in the making we are finally here tonight I'm very excited to be here and present the recommendation on behalf of our teacher team uh the foundational skills curriculum here are the teachers that have been tirelessly working to implement um so I just want to give them a huge and thank them for their time their energy their commitment to helping us bring this recommendation to you this evening um they have again like I've mentioned they're doing math they're doing six different Ela curriculums um and they are really championing this work for us so I I appreciate them so much and also our our LTE coaches step glad Monica Miller Sarah Peterson they are right in there cheering our teachers on learning as much as they can about these resources so we can make this asess as possible for all of our staff in for so uh first step in the process is a comprehensive needs assessment and like I said this began over two years ago and as part of that process we look at National shifts and Trends and then we also look at what happen in Minnesota so there were some big things that were happening throughout this process the and the focus on science of reading nationally the growing body of research that demonstrates the effective methodology to use with students um and then that push for evidence-based instruction to improve literacy outcomes for all that's happening Across the Nation and in Minnesota we have a similar theme happening and also the passing of our new state standards in our new state standards they specifically call out these foundational skills ships um so I just wanted to make sure you know that yes it's happening Across the Nation but also really critically important to be paying attention to this in Minnesota and then we looked at our data this is just a small little sample of the data we looked at but our fast bridge data our MCA data we have our local literacy plan data and all of these things helped us form our guiding principles and really have the team think about what are we looking for in a new resource to better out comes so from there we created an evaluation rubric um we did take advantage of the one that mde had and Carrie had put together but then we ftuned it so that it wasn't pages and pages long when we were actually using these resources this year so the team developed some key look fors and then as they were implementing they kind of ranked those with the 210 kind of a indicator so we brought in a lot lot of different vendors over the course of uh last year and kind of settled on our pilot which this year was 95 uh phonics for K5 quarter one and then El education the skills block for quarter two and then youly for K2 quarter three and we had different ways we were collecting that feedback qualitative teacher feedback throughout and then that ranking system for our teachers if they saw it evident or not evident when they were so tonight I'm bringing the recommendation for youly for grades K2 as our tier one kind of core instructional resource for all and then 95 bonics for grade three5 next steps for us again upon approval would be uh teacher teams continuing to implement these two resources for the remainder of the school year um thinking about successful implementation training supports also um recort cards and rubrics because this is a change from what we've graded in the past with standards based grading so we want to update all of those things um creating our our elementary teachers are used to instructional HBS we're calling them so creating that where they have a pacing guide and they have the resources all theine um and then full implementation in ask first question um thank you for all your work on this obviously this is a a long process to get to this point um didn't happen over and you you looked at several programs you settled on these two um after reviewing them uh the 95 phonics you know just the reading I did on it I mean they have a a full like K through five program um but you you're CH choosing it for just three through five and using youly for K through two and I was curious yeah how you reach that decision that is a great question um our kindergarten and our first grade teachers um they felt like the scope and sequence with uly was a better match for our students in Shak and they have seen much faster results with youly with 95 BS but they they like the 95 bonds just not for the because it looks like there's a there's a difference in offerings like the the flash cards and things that those those start at a later grade so it's almost like a set of products they offer it's a great question yes and it actually is um so even foundational skills is kind of like a stair step apprach and K2 is really foundational think learning your letters learning your sounds learning how they work we call them in single syllable words um and 3 five tends to take it a little bit of a different approach they start studying morphology and roots and suffixes and multi slabic words and so there is a divide anyway in terms of the the resources that are youly does not go beyond second grade so we knew we needed something for grades three through five um and youly can be a standalone K2 our students aren't going to miss anything by having a K2 resource and a 35 because it's such a different Focus um for the 35 does that make sense yeah yeah thank you for explaining um so I appreciate the information that we received at the of last week Nick and I talk tonight coincidentally um I listen to a presentation on Saturday afternoon by principal from water mayor that she started talking about their implementation of bre and there a and and how fast they were seeing improvements with their fast Bridge uh the proficiency and the different grades for me was I was like wow I just read about this so I mean it was it really sparked my interest to hear what they had to say and it was a Minnesota district and this was at a national school conference that I was at so that gave me a lot of confidence knowing that this was the recommendation that was coming forward tonight um in hearing another District that was implementing it and having a lot of success and the tie to what um you were talking about at sunpath kind of a kickoff for um can't remember what it was called they called it data desserts or desserts data yeah okay but they've already started they're a little bit ahead of us from an implementation standpoint because they're only a district of 1300 K versus the, students so uh but they were talking about the success and uh engagement level that they are having with parents and so I hope that we're able to do that it' be great to see that with the math as well as the literacy to skip that engagement and to get that feedback from the parents and and get them involved to understand exactly what we're what we're doing what's working than how they're how they need to be involved and how they need to be engage to make sure that their child is successful as well so I I think this is great so I I really don't have any questions a lot of the questions that I had were kind of answered uh and just to close loop on the Early Childhood learning and I know it's probably not a complete um you know transition from to pay rightly learning because not all students go through what would be our early child program and the being that the resources or some resources will be available to the community how does or is there a correlation between some of that early childhood into kindergarten as part of the youly you know so it's not just hting the ground running or there's some context I between those three foury olds that are now entering their K12 Journey we are definitely hoping to do some alignment work there with Pearson you know we always have so we had dupon for example in our kindergarten program and Pearson was trained in that and implemented that once we made the decision to use that same with the handing easy we made the decision for kindergarten and they joined us and they were trained and we supported them in implementing so I I Envision us partnering with them to align whatever their litery programming is to us um it probably won't be UI it might be a related or something more developmentally appropriate for three and foury olds but yes we will work to align with them but it's super encouraging CHR thank you for sharing that that had success District so and what I read was really compelling just to buil by teachers for teachers implemented in the classroom kind of a peer review so first of all thank you very much this is exciting I think um my wife and I have many times gotten to meet with you and throughout this process you guys um Pi some some Proven Winners it seems like here some that have shown some successes there's other districts we've seen the you working in and and we're really excited about about it in our reality once we did this so um I have a few comments like you know this probably couldn't hit home for just about anybody in a greater like this position and what I'm in I have a kindergartener that was here three years ago right here's some vience materials from three years ago and kindergarten that happened to be in the pilot this year so I've gotten to see both both and and actually get the feel and go through some of the materials to figure out what are we doing here I'm not a teacher you know I don't have an education background you talking about some of these words paradigms and Fidelity and what was the latest one I just seen here I was like you guys talking about but when we see the material and it makes sense and I think it'll really help all of our students learn and it's really powerful and I really encourage us all to uh welcome this and I have some of it if you want to look at it afterwards i' kind of been carrying around for a while in case the moment came up for it but I'm really excited that my question for you would just be um what was the terms and lengths of these contracts as far as literacy in our the curriculums recall might so for the foundational skills we're recommending five years um the the implementation science you know within the first three years is really kind of U up and down right because we're learning new pedagogy or practices instructional practices yes and we're learning a new resource um so you don't always see an instant um return right out right out of the game and for this particular resource um we don't want to lock ourselves into something where we're not seeing those results so our our teacher team felt very confident with a fiveyear uh contract so that we can really make sure that it we're seeing results in Shak that the vendor is promising um and you know for you fly that that expense is um ongoing printing expenses with the decodable text they're called decodable text they apply the rules that they take their learning um so 95 ponics is that fiveyear kind of contract with with the vendor um and and I feel confident in that because things are still evolving right and so 95 phonics is one of one vendor there's not that many three through five and that could change so I I feel like we don't want to lock in something um until we see those results the last thing the full imple full implementation is that the same as what we've talked about in the D or some this been um not sure I understand the so no some the same plan we're implementing the the uh is it the end of our literacy cor implementation this coming year or it's next year too right no so next year would just be the foundational skills so just youly in 95 phonic even though we'll make a decision and a recommendation for the language comprehension um we want to have really good results so we want to have our teachers finish the the the core training and Implement those foundational skills next year and then the following year we'll do the language comprehension full scale adoption and implementation um our teacher teams that are piloting will implement it all next year and we'll do the same thing it's much more complicated than the foundational skills so we will figure out standard based report cards we will figure out our assessments um and those things with those pilot teams next year um that was one of the things that watert mayor did say that they had to adjust their assessments um when they implemented this because it didn't really fit with what they were previously doing and so they really had to massage to make it workable the right information yes um the question I had was not necessarily about the curriculum but just the read app as a whole one of the things that makes me nervous about this is new teachers that are coming right out of college because they are not the curriculum in college is not um does not necessarily align with what the district is going to be um teaching or implementing um and so what is our have you thought about what our process is going to be as we bring in new teachers fresh out of college or that really haven't had any to get them up to speed so that way when they start teaching first grade whatever grade it is that they can be successful right off off the versus you know my kid was in this grade and this teacher didn't have proper training for for the curriculum that's being implements now my child's going to be behind because um so what what have we thought of how how is this going to work for those teachers that behind so next year my understanding is the state will offer additional cohorts for phase one participants so we we have some time to flush out a longer term plan um and our vendors already reaching out asking you know how many people are we going to want our own cohort or join a state cohort my guess is we would join because you have to have over 30 people to to do your own internal cohort um and I think you the moving forward beyond what the state funds we know we want to support our teachers we know we need to provide them training um even the people who finished core we need to provide them ongoing support it's a lot of information so we have to keep it FR Center we can't just oh we did core and now we're done um and I think that's where that coaching becomes really really important or those PLT teams having those ongoing conversations through their data um and and you know first step is what do we do when our kids aren't responding to this instruction we get curious we go back to our manuals we open them up we figure out where where are we missing here what are we missing so that will will be just a part of our process throughout can talk all night but universities are also looking at their programs and universities are being ranked based on their criteria of meeing Veda requirements there's a there of of how they're doing um and some of them are doing great so I don't have that information right right now but I can definitely find that um so we'll be watching that where are kids coming from how are they prepared I know it's a hot button the higher education and how they're going to be impl that into I I mean I didn't realize how how many standards are in those teacher prep programs but is fight right now yeah I might cheer Smith I think that's a tremendous question uh you and Sarah don't know this I just snuck it into our uh our agenda for when we meet with Jim mosich our assistant superintendent this the core training the letters training the science of reading training is substantial uh I think it is a reasonable expectation for us as a school district that our teachers moving forward have the knowledge have the skills or the willingness to learn that Knowledge and Skills because that is a really really crucial piece in addition to knowing how to use the OT 95 phonics whatever other comprehension curriculum is and so I think it's you know but but my notes are in our agenda are what our next steps in develop system and that's kind of you know it's part of that comprehensive literacy framework but it goes deeper you know our principles have been trained you know at the elementary level and how do we bring that into teacher evaluations expectations and again you know we want to support those who are on their path to learning that willing to learn that uh but it's certainly to me that's a non-negotiable part of you know if you're going to be a successful teacher in our school district we have to develop that as a you know an expectation across our district so and I I have complete confidence we will but that question is uh that is you know kind of the the Forefront of you my thinking as we move forward and you know how do we build that system where we did we're not investing all this time effort money resources to not do it incredibly well we have to we owe it to our students I would also add we have six internal train so last summer we sent a cohort through so I'm one of them like I can continue training and train teachers as we add them in our system which I think is a value add to us Beyond just this funding of the state so we have people on staff that can continue to provide it we're part of those monthly required trainings to keep that facilitation um status so there's pieces kind of in place to beond just the funing and what about like substitutes for longterm Subs that you have you know you're asking great questions we we did um we did offer it to all of our multic classroom teachers it was a choice for them if they they wanted to participate I mean a state requirement is a state requirement to Value ad for them to have it as well so we have a number of them that chose to participate and our are doing that right now as a competitive thing when you're looking for a job that more education that I have in this because I know it's now required and looking at what districts are doing what curriculums that sort of thing I was going to be coming at a college or if I was a long-term substitute as a career I would be wanting to get trained because I know that I'm employable and so think about like those longterm Subs that have to pick up the Baton and carry it for the rest of the school year and making sure that they are trained and are we offering you know I'm sure we have those you know we talk about building personel that kind of move between and kind of that substitute but I know there are other people as well that have longterm are we offering them of train we make sure that we retain them in our district that they know that they are valued and we want to keep them and keep them educated maybe that's not something we talked about and thought about but I just curious because I just see this as a as we move forward especially over the next few years being a very competitive it would be to our advantage to try to keep people in attention tool as much as possible I could be wrong but I can speak from that you know that blind view I think there's some advantages and some things that we've been doing and appreciative of the board like shock the university just that idea of we're going to work to to develop professional learning and growth opportunities that will help you in specific things that have value know to us as a district and to the individual teacher I think that move as well and we've talked about these things where we have far more building Subs in the sense where hey you're a building sub you have a job here even some of that when we're talking about the bench as we're hiring that gives us a much more leverage in terms of hey we you know we have this shared expectation in terms of the skills knowledge uh that our teachers are bring so I think we're we're well situated I don't know if there's anything more specific to add but certainly that's been part of conversations how that all plays out yeah I mean that definitely was how we advertised in it if you a multi classroom teacher longterm sub and you you want this right because it is a value ad for you as well as us and we had a number of them Point like does it translate into lure you know i' never consider the Gap in terms of teachers coming out of college the I questions living with somebody who's totally immersed in this it's even going into the college coursework and what are the expectations and what are the learning outcomes think that's crucial but colleges that that adopt the this framework in terms of developing that called Center of Excellence around that framework makes those graduates that much more marketable question further discussion um I don't see a a u narrative for the question that's being that's put before us so I we can unless you have I can just make a motion to adopt the foundational skills ly as presented sry youly K through2 and 95 ponic 3 through so we have a motion Johnson will present y so this is our next round of policy updates um if you scroll through this is your first time looking at this you can see a lot of these are FL as no changes just because we're continuing on with the uh cyclical renal of just to make sure at every years at least ones of no of course you should read them all the ones of not that I'll call out um 522 is a big homework assignment title n Court decision uh they're vacating the 2024 ruing on Title 9 and going back to the 2020 Rule and uh they are completely different documents so you will not get a line summary of the changes um so I can tell you having read them both myself if you just Google what are the changes you get a pretty good description like I can vouch that Google is telling you the truth in this case um but of course read them all um but I will tell you it's it's about 40 pages between the two of them um I don't want to go too deep into like editorializing on what I think the changes are um but U so I want just take a one more time um another one that I think is um maybe seems small but I think is uh significant is uh the first one on the top 102a equal education and all opportunity policy um and it just adds some language kind of to the I guess maybe the Preamble of that policy that aligns it to our mission statement as a district and you can read the text of that um so that each and every student in our school year is indidual everything else in here I feel is relatively minor but again um go through it time was got a further discussion thank you sh 11 committee reports and other information uh we'll start with tonight down here all right well it's beens like a little while since we've had an update but quite B going on been in a couple of the at least one of the amsd um morning meetings and they' had some legislators some of these topics been discussing here presented presentations there a community meeting last week where we had some of the folks from the sh here plan Department really showed us a lot of the growth in the area and some of it's half of every single family homes that might potentially lead to more kids in our district which is always something that's looking for to but there was a lot of other developments and different types of things that building um sounds like they're actually going to close for the roundabout this summer here already that might affect some of our transportation things that came got keep an eye on but it's a good it's a good meeting um I look forward to being a part of that group that was my first meeting with them and soed get me there and looking to grow that group too there's room for another individual or two if anyone else wants to join uh we got literacy my family and I going to head sh the capital on the 24th for literacy day at the capital there's a handful of items related to the read act that that are still um On's pushing for including two-hour mandated just like training class for all teachers that to the district that that is out there um so anyone wants to got nothing else going on come join us and then literacy night we just started hearing about that we're going to try to do all we can to help get that successful event here end of the summer try to get people to come out at the end of the summer T Le to see but show them you know physically what some of this stuff will do for for for the kids and get them excited about Howen some these positive Trends and early results from the pilots and stuff like that um Metro meeting on Tuesday strategic planning was the focus unfortunately I had Miss it last the process know things were changing um but I know that the focus of the night was strategic planning again and moving discuss and then I just um have been up town the last four or five days at cosbo which is the consortial of State School Board associations there 25 states that were represented there were a lot of Minnesota school members there that really they on msba board msba board sends a rotation among the member districts um a lot of great sessions um a lot on AI uh a lot on school security and then as I mention May asking a lot of questions and obviously there was a lot of discussion and um concerns we had a short presentation by a national advocacy Gres could question in terms of of theer implications to K certainly but I'm hearing like some of the student bones or no this public schools um oh and the other thing is just spending a lot of time with msba staff over the last five days talking a lot about what's going on in Minnesota the legislature um the Govern Governor came out on Friday with the supplemental budget which included another1 million education cuts schools which total about almost 350 million in his budget now that's not necessar what's going to be approved but um there are some significant concerns um in regards to some of those cuts and the impact that they might have um I've been at the capital a few times testifying on some bills over the last few weeks um kind of Rubes are here to be your bill was not heard the next probably yeah so there's just thank you um the finance and Facilities committee meeting tonight and last week so that was that's it for me so yeah finan facilities with Finance tonight we uh we're looking at the 26 no 25 26 budget oh skip the year there sorry um and then we're looking at some forecasts going up 28 it was a very interesting discussion that we have um I did notice that there before our next meeting uh there is graduation at uh wow that that thing just absolutely left my brain uh and and I'm I'm looking forward to I I try to go as much to as many of those as I can so I saw that's on April 11th at Friday so I plan on uh as far as Community engagement I got out to a couple events the Middle School play Anastasia uh that was really well done um great the um and then uh culture Fest U was just recently as well and that's always a fun time as usual um the line for the food is very popular so like I didn't get it's a long wait you're attending as a civilian instead of a student like they're all moing the place and get all the tickets so by the time you walk in at 5:35 they're serving ticket number 40 and I have ticket number 615 so um so I didn't get to I didn't get any food this time around so that was but it's always fun I had uh my first pearon advisory council meeting which turned out to be just Mar Jor myself for a shout out to our early childhood family uh Advisory Group could really use S more representation and it's really easy to forget about the littles but if you look at you know e through 12 right that is you know that's the start of their their journey in public education and so if anyone not KN on the doors talk to your neighbors see if they want to be interested in joining that group um because they had to transition late um they do have a couple projects they're looking at to update some of the Green Space right outside the buing not aerial expense partnersh sources because they don't have a budget right now for some of those things like other PTO and other build and Jim uh yeah end of the third quarter is Thursday so uh it'll be time for spring break but it's hard to believe that we're 75% of the way through the the school year already and in the van of the state legislature if you tune in to the Senate and finance committee tomorrow morning uh our high school principal Jeff piki will be testifying on set file2 which is uh essentially the seat time bill um which would allow us more opportunities to free kids up to high school to do internships C CS projects things of that nature he testified last week in front of Ed policy and um was invited back by education involving who is carrying this bill to to testify again tomorrow at 8:30 and he'll be doing that for Tiffany uh just a couple things that I'll add on the testimony front uh was great for Tracy air health services supervisor and I to testify and just share shaky story from a heart safe schools Community perspective and and really the only reason that we were able to share that story is all the work that was done by the community Janny Hennis and many others that made it that in basically three four months um we could have the full plan that was actually part of that Senate file so that was a great opportunity and asked a lot of questions and it was good to see Sher it was really a neutral testimon which just this is what we've done it's feasible um and this is how we made it happen so thought that was good to share for shopy um literacy event I just want to commend MC group um actually I think we've been on calls together as well um but Nick I really expanded a group to pull together literacy efforts and you saw a few snapshots where we're looking to really brand it long term so it's not just an event it's something where you're always seeing the efforts that are going in and the focus to our comprehensive literacy framework and it's just exciting to be a part of that that group because they are very educated and connected to all of that so um and then uh really excited to Shaka Foundation actually to your point uh Tim the peeron elementary or pieron Early Learning Center will be submitting a application to Shaka Foundation because we are going to have some Shaka high school students pull together that project that you mentioned at Pearson and then the foundation is able to as a real world learning experience should the board approve it so just think it's great that we can share those things that's a pretty quick turn I do I abstain from vote so it will go forward to them but and I believe have an eag eagle scout that's also doing some work there as well so just good stuff but I know it's we focus on Sports we focus onm but kind of shine a little light on yes that's than you yeah I actually have a few things um you you kind of triggered uh with the testimony both on you know in you know what I would call authentic or Genuine learning uh and then the you know heart health we talked before how sometimes we've taken action and we've implemented things you know and then a couple years later a state law gets passed or others start doing it evidently we've moved on to another phase even beyond that where there are things that we have done now they're actually people are writing bills kind of you know Innovative they think this would be a good idea it sounds like they're now bringing us in as the howto example what are you doing and how does that work and that's a really really cool place to be in a credit to a lot of folks along the way so well done with that um our finance committee is adding a meeting I think bill sent a meeting invite for 4:15 but it should start if it works I'm kind of looking at the committee members at 4:00 so that it can end at 4:15 and we can 4:45 yeah it can end at 4:45 so we have 15 minutes to put the room over for the Personnel committee meeting on April 14th and we'll get that posted on the window tomorrow I can just sit there perfect yeah we'll we'll hang out it'll be it'll be great and then I did uh not too long before uh before the finance committee meeting I did send an email out again with a link a reminder uh you know board members were invited to attend of the napac our Native
