[0:38] That's right. Yes. [0:43] All right. So, we'll be looking at our [0:45] 2025 26 budgets. Just kind of going over [0:47] that again. Um [0:50] the budget that we proposed back in June [0:52] of last year and then our proposed 2020 [0:56] 2026 property taxes which is up with the [1:00] 25 table 2026. So if you guys haven't [1:03] seen the document it's 40 pages three [1:07] column calculations [1:08] >> in nice big print [1:11] >> love by [1:13] >> I can totally read that. Yeah, you can [1:16] break it down and it's a little more [1:17] manageable. [1:18] >> I got through like the first four lines. [1:19] >> There's there's a lot of great [1:20] information in it. You just can't be [1:22] overwhelmed by like just the over [1:25] like focus on certain areas. But anyway, [1:28] >> we'll keep moving. [1:29] >> All right. So, as I mentioned, uh two [1:32] major requirements, kind of talk about [1:34] the tax statements. Um this meeting, we [1:37] are required to send out the notice to [1:40] our county saying this is what the day [1:41] and time we're going to be meeting at [1:43] location. if you have any questions. [1:45] That's why it's important that we start [1:46] at six. That's uh and do it as of this [1:49] date because it's printed on the the tax [1:52] statements. [1:53] Uh and then as part of the public [1:55] hearing u we'll go over the payable 2026 [1:57] levy fiscal year 2026 budget and allow [2:00] for public comments. [2:04] All right. Components of our district [2:05] tax levy are either set by the state [2:08] formula [2:09] or voter approved as operated by the [2:12] state. So, our voter approved our our [2:16] items are a $290 9 operating referendum [2:19] that was passed in 2017 and then uh most [2:22] recently [2:24] uh our 2022 [2:26] $39 million general obligation bond for [2:29] our uh our building bonds. So, [2:32] >> I said that it was 2017 [2:34] >> 2017 [2:34] >> was the voter approved. [2:36] >> This was approved. I believe it was [2:37] funded in I think I did a comment on it [2:41] as well [2:41] >> and it was $190 basically. [2:44] >> Yeah, it was um it was the amount that [2:46] was expiring with our currents. I [2:48] believe maybe there was a small [2:50] increase. I can't remember. [2:53] >> All right. [2:56] How are my property taxes determined? [3:00] Oh, how is my property tax determined? [3:03] So, each year county assessor determines [3:04] what the market value of each pro parcel [3:06] property. I'll start by saying too that [3:08] this is a template. A lot of this is [3:10] like a template um that's put out by [3:11] MEA. So I just thought they had a really [3:14] a lot of really good um [3:16] informationational items in there. Uh so [3:18] we can all learn something. Yeah. So the [3:21] county assesses your market value is uh [3:24] state sets the formulas for that tax [3:26] rate. The county then adds up their [3:29] entire total tax capacity or their their [3:32] net market the the market value to get [3:34] to their net tax capacity. and then u [3:36] you know whatever they need to levy is [3:38] then divided out based [snorts] on your [3:41] percentage of the overall [3:44] uh property base. [3:48] So statewide uh state sources make about [3:50] 72% um on a later slide I kind of I hone [3:54] in more on what the sewers are. were a [3:56] little bit higher on state sources, a [3:58] little lower on federal sources as well, [4:01] 7% statewide, we're about four. Property [4:04] taxes make up 16% in general and other [4:07] local sources. Do [4:09] >> you know what's in that other local [4:10] source of like I know some of it's [4:12] investment income or something, but then [4:14] there's just this other category. [4:16] >> Yeah. So, a lot uh with us, I mean, our [4:19] like student activity accounts like they [4:21] bring in a lot of fun, a lot of lot of [4:22] dollars, um fundraisers, um [4:26] donations, [4:27] >> activity fees. Um, it's kind of [4:30] whatever's left over is kind of a catch [4:32] all. [4:32] >> Okay, cool. Thank you. [4:34] >> So, this is u one of two slides I really [4:37] like on this presentation, but again, [4:39] this is kind of an inflation factor. I'm [4:43] sure if you followed educational [4:46] financing, it's inflation is outpacing [4:48] that of the formula. Currently, it's an [4:51] uh law that our general education um per [4:57] people pubable amount will match [4:59] inflation up to 3%. Could change at any [5:01] time, but currently that's where it's at [5:02] right now. So, um that's a good thing. [5:05] But as you look, you know, back in 2003, [5:07] you know, where this chart starts, [5:10] um laser pointer here, and then the [5:13] growth and then the gap that continues [5:14] to [5:16] >> get get a little bit bigger as it goes. [5:18] So, [5:20] one of the challenges all districts are [5:22] facing. [5:24] And this is the one that I uh I really [5:26] enjoy because this kind of shows or [5:28] sheds a light on the difference between [5:31] a city, county, um or other [5:34] jurisdictions compared to that of a [5:36] school district. School districts are [5:38] not allowed to increase [snorts] taxes [5:40] outside of a general ed formula [5:43] uh without voter approval. And so what [5:45] this is showing is property taxes [5:50] across all jurisdictions. Um, [5:53] this line here is the rate that your [5:56] city and counties would be taxing and [5:59] this is where schools are. So being as [6:01] city counties can do what they want [6:03] essentially [6:05] uh in terms of setting their marks that [6:08] that amount is growing and then [6:10] naturally there's push back from the [6:12] community that they're being taxed at [6:13] higher rates and they are unfortunately [6:16] we're [6:17] part of that but not as real decision [6:19] [snorts] maker behind it. [6:25] Looking at our budget that we had [6:26] approved in June here. Um you'll notice [6:29] our general fund [6:31] about it's this is pretty much a break [6:34] even budget because this has park in it. [6:35] The sale of park which was we originally [6:37] had at 600,000. So all in all we're very [6:40] break even in our general fund. Um [6:43] construction fund. We didn't even put a [6:46] a budget in here. There's going to be [6:47] some expenses and some some expenses [6:50] from just the final retainage months [6:52] that got paid out after July. But uh for [6:55] the most part, not a whole lot's [6:56] happening there. [6:58] Then our debt service fund. Um so total [7:02] revenues were 19 million expenses of 18. [7:06] Um an increase of 895,000, but the [7:08] majority of those are within our debt [7:10] service and uh [7:13] the park sale, which is now dropped to [7:17] about 300 with the new agreement with [7:19] the city of Lassour. [7:23] some kind of quick hitter highlights of [7:26] it. Um, as I mentioned, we're pretty [7:28] balanced budget for this year. Um, based [7:30] on our adopted budget anyway, obviously [7:32] we'll have revisions coming for a [7:34] revised budget that we'll do in the [7:35] spring. General fund breakout. Um, I [7:39] showed the statewide uh slide. I think [7:42] they had 72% was their state aid. We're [7:44] about 75 76. [snorts] Um, their federal [7:47] was about seven. We're at three and a [7:48] half with other local sources of 7.87. 7 [7:53] and a levy makes of about 13%. [7:56] Enrollment drives everything we do in [7:58] terms of money. Uh right now we have [8:01] estimated ADM enrollment this year of [8:03] $94 or sorry 94 uh ADMs [8:08] um [8:10] that's making up these budgeted amounts [8:13] as I mentioned the sale park 300. Um the [8:17] big highlights include Central Park [8:19] again. We had some new personnel [8:21] additions, salary salary benefit [8:24] adjustment increases. Our sped [8:26] consulting services are actually going [8:28] to be decreasing quite a bit with just [8:30] bringing on a lot of these new personnel [8:32] additions with speech in general like [8:34] speech. [snorts] I think last year we [8:36] paid $335,000 in speech consulting. So [8:41] um we had to do it. So this year we had [8:44] two new speech um therapists, speech [8:48] therapists, [8:49] >> that's referred to him as. Yeah. [8:51] >> Inhouse [8:54] then our special ed state aid is coming [8:56] back to normal now um after the funding [8:59] loss from last year due to the CEDRA uh [9:01] issue. Um and as part of that, last year [9:04] we spent down all of our carryover funds [9:07] that we had for our federal dollars to [9:09] kind of backfill that Cedra loss. Um and [9:12] so in this current budget uh there was a [9:14] large reduction to the federal piece [9:16] there. [9:20] All right. Here is [9:23] not not necessarily you know or sibly or [9:27] neglect counties tax uh bill but the [9:31] [clears throat] generic one anyway kind [9:33] of walks through [9:35] um you know what you'd be looking at [9:37] what your class is. Obviously, there's I [9:39] shouldn't say obviously, but you know, [9:41] depending if you're a homestead, an egg [9:43] or a egg commercial or residential egg. [9:47] Um, each classification carries [9:49] different property rates attached to [9:50] them. [9:52] This would illustrate that. Anything [9:54] that's going on with your property tax, [9:57] bond credits, [10:00] so so forth. And then you have an [10:02] announcement that your actual statement [10:03] is coming in 2026. [10:08] These are the effective tax rates. U [10:12] so farm is actually the the lowest, [10:17] commercial, industrial the highest [10:20] and if you were to look at the next [10:21] slide I believe kind of mirrors that to [10:24] a degree [snorts] where you know our [10:26] market value is statewide too. So, you [10:29] know, the area of uh sewer and Henderson [10:31] might look a little bit differently [10:33] likely would, but the big story here is [10:36] that, you know, in general commercial, [10:39] commercial industrial, they take on the [10:41] largest share of the net taxes compared [10:43] to that of the uh the market value [10:45] share. You know, farms land uh a lot of [10:49] wealth in the land, maybe not so much [10:51] the cash flow. Um 6.8% tax there. [10:57] pretty even I think with the residential [10:59] homes [11:04] in order to help [11:07] communities pass building bonds. There [11:09] was the egg to school credit law u that [11:12] was put out in 2017. [11:15] Uh basically at the time it started off [11:18] as I can't remember what percentage but [11:21] it built up. [11:22] much. [clears throat] It might have been [11:23] 50% then 60 70 whatever it ended at 70% [11:27] and will remain in place in 2026. [11:30] Uh that impact for our community is [11:32] $964,000. [11:35] So, uh, at the end of the slide or at [11:37] the end of this, um, presentation when [11:38] we look at the like actual total levy [11:40] amount, [11:42] um, just remember that that it's it's [11:44] that amount less that 964 like they [11:47] still put that as like the tax rate, but [11:48] on your tax statements, you'll see for [11:50] those who, you know, have the egg gland, [11:53] it show that in the credits. I think [11:55] there's an example come up here of Yeah, [11:58] this next one. [12:00] I think this arrow got a little wonky, [12:02] but it should be up here. Um, so this is [12:05] what your actual tax statement would [12:07] look like. And then on your statement, [12:08] you have your calculation of what your [12:10] tax [12:12] u bill would be. And then any any [12:14] credits that would then offset it to get [12:17] to your totals down here or [12:21] somewhere on that statement. Anyway, [12:27] and looking at the totality of the egg [12:29] or comparing the values [snorts] of the [12:31] egg to school uh pieces. So, you can [12:36] see, you know, rural Minnesota very red, [12:38] meaning that we get greater than [12:39] $380,000 in credits. [12:42] Um shown here again, we're 964,000. [12:48] Yeah, it's kind of one of the the perks [12:51] um that rural Minnesota gets [12:56] moving on. [12:58] This is how our levy is broken out into. [13:00] So, you'll always hear like tier one, [13:02] tier two, tier three, whatever. Uh the [13:05] reason why they're tiered is because of [13:07] the equalization factors. So, [13:11] there's various [13:14] explain. [13:15] >> Yeah. [13:16] Everything I say I can contradict [13:18] myself, but um [13:22] in general, the more wealth you have in [13:24] an area, the more the state is going to [13:27] say it's up to that local community to [13:29] pay for their share. And the one thing [13:33] that's happened throughout the years, [13:35] and I I'm just going to go to it quickly [13:37] here. So, I put this slide together here [13:40] where my mouse went out. [13:43] So, 2016, the market value [13:47] just over a billion dollars for our [13:49] entire school district tax base. [22:01] where we're at. [22:02] >> It would be definitely interesting. In totality, [22:21] we're not even increasing a half [22:22] percent. Um I was telling Jim today [22:26] actually that had u had we not had [22:29] adjustments coming through on this one [22:31] for you know kind of trueing up how I [22:33] mentioned you know um the data from last [22:36] year we we'd be seeing a decrease in our [22:38] lending. So so really if you know those [22:40] adjustments didn't take place you know [22:43] this would be a negative percentage and [22:45] our general fund would be gone. We had [22:47] um you know our whole numbers in the B [22:49] report a little high and the system [22:51] lease levy was a little high. U couple [22:55] other things [22:58] general debt service decreasing there a [23:01] little bit too but yeah so this is a big [23:03] thing that we're going to be uh [23:05] approving today or asking that the board [23:08] approves today. [23:10] This is where things get crazy Kai [23:12] because like you explained it all but in [23:16] like overall our collections are going [23:19] up.36% [23:21] right which is less than a percent. [23:23] Okay. Yeah. [23:23] >> However, because my housing value went [23:26] up and the fact that housing is picking [23:28] up more of the tab than industrial [23:30] commercial now, like my actual amount [23:32] that goes to the school district, my tax [23:35] bill is going up like 6% or something. [23:37] >> Good. [23:38] >> Because of the way that all works out. [23:40] So, it's hard to understand that I think [23:43] sometimes. [23:45] >> Yeah. So that's [24:07] when you take all of your [24:10] basically your taxable property ends up [24:12] being boils down to like this is what [24:14] your community per our calculation [24:16] should be able to support. I think like [24:17] majority of communities around the area [24:19] are like, you know, well above that, you [24:21] know, in terms of what they're being [24:23] taxed. So, um yeah, and we're just [24:26] obviously just going along for a general [24:29] ed formula, whatever they tell us, [24:32] unless we go out for an operator or [24:34] building uh bond. So, a lot of it's out [24:39] of the district's hands. But then, yeah, [24:40] anytime [24:42] your market value goes up in your house, [24:45] [snorts] [24:46] I mean, that's good thing for the owner [24:48] of that property, but you know, if you [24:50] never leave, [24:52] you know, you're still paying paying [24:54] that tax on it. Um and it's like the largest [34:28] tier um admins walking through to [34:32] monitor and um um ensure accountability [34:36] um for that tier. And then they're going [34:38] to be starting tier 2, which is a [34:39] smaller part of the population that [34:41] needs a little bit more intensive. Um, [34:43] they're going to be starting with [34:44] reading interventions. Um, girls [36:16] basketball had a scrimmage at Bethany [36:17] Ling College last weekend. They played [36:20] both United South Central and Lake [36:22] Crystal Welcome Memorial. Both games [36:24] ended in a loss and their next game is [36:26] at St. Clair on December 12th. [36:29] Boys basketball has their first game on [36:31] Tuesday at home versus is Waterbell [36:33] Legion Morristown. [36:35] Um C squad at 4:30, B squad at 5:45, and [36:38] varsity at 7:15. Then they have an away [36:41] game on Thursday at Enrig. [36:45] And same time for startings. So girls [36:48] hockey has a record of 511. It's pretty [36:51] good. And this weekend they took a road [36:54] trip up to East Grand Forks and Fergus [36:55] Falls. They won 42 against East Grand [36:58] Forks and 10 to Fergus Falls. Um [37:01] tomorrow senior night against New and [37:03] then on Saturday they go to Blair. Boys [37:06] hockey started their season on the 21st [37:08] with a two3 overtime loss to Mount [37:11] Westka and then they had an exciting and [37:13] close game last Tuesday ending in a 65 [37:16] win against Hopkins. Then tomorrow they [37:18] head to Nal. Wrestling has a tournament [37:21] in Gleno on December 6th at 9:30 a.m. [37:24] and then a home try on the 9th with Sy [37:27] and St. Peter. then an away match on the [37:30] 11th with with teams from WH and J JWP. [37:34] Um they're also currently ranked fifth [37:36] in Minnesota for class one. [37:39] Okay. So then I'll just go over some [37:40] clubs and other events. Our clubs have [37:42] kind of been busy this month. I'm more [37:44] like highlighting the unifi group. So [37:47] just going over some stuff that they've [37:48] been doing. So our unifi group attended [37:50] the character academy leadership summer [37:52] summit in Minneapolis. Um at the [37:54] conference students focused on [37:55] connection, leadership growth and [37:56] reflection along with personal [37:58] development. So you know learning some [37:59] skills that they can you know take along [38:01] with them at any stage of life. And then [38:03] they also recently went to meet the [38:05] Minneapolis Institution of Art where [38:06] they watched the musical reenactment of [38:08] how of Dr. J Christmas. So you know they [38:11] got some stuff going on there. And then [38:13] [snorts] they also coming up have um [38:15] basketball thinking about starting on [38:17] Unifi bowling and we're also doing the [38:19] floor plunge. So, if any of you guys are [38:20] interested, feel free to sign up. Um, [38:24] and then along with that, um, student [38:27] [snorts] council had turkey bingo, so [38:29] students are encouraged to cobble their [38:30] way down to get their prizes. Uh just [40:37] some quick updates. We had um on the [40:40] park building. We had a little [40:42] vandalism. [40:44] >> Couple individuals had to break into the [40:47] windows going down into the old uh [40:49] cafeteria [40:51] and do some graffiti in the cafeteria. [40:55] Um so we call local law enforcement. [40:57] They do have suspects in mind because [41:00] apparently the graffiti matches other [41:02] graffiti around [41:04] town. So [41:06] they're dealing with that. Uh the [41:09] building [41:10] As you saw down lower agenda, we have [41:13] amend [41:14] stating that the board is aware of it [41:17] being [41:19] in the city being [41:22] city from their perspective. That way we [41:24] don't have to heat it. They're shutting [41:26] the gas off this week and then it's [41:31] pretty much just shut down that aspect [41:33] of it. [41:35] Uh roller numbers uh are slightly up. He's [43:24] been here for a couple years. Um, he has [43:27] a couple different assistants on staff. [43:29] um which I've gotten to kind of know a [43:32] little bit with just being able to go to [43:33] the hockey games. Um and then girls [43:36] basketball, our head coach is uh Sher [43:39] Fritz um who's been here for a couple [43:40] years and then she has uh two assistants [43:43] on staff as well. Um and then girls [43:45] hockey, we have uh Dustin Swenson um and [43:50] then he's got two assistants um below [43:52] him and then we have co-head coaches for [43:54] wrestling and Luke Wilson and Ben [43:55] Wilson. So, um, that kind of rounds up [43:58] our coaching staffs. And, um, it's been [44:00] really good to just get to know [44:02] everybody, um, in that in that realm. [44:05] Um, with hockey, it's a little different [44:07] because we have a couple that pull from [44:09] different schools, which is kind of [44:11] unique for us to be able to have and [44:13] it's fun to, I guess, be able to kind of [44:15] hear from them and what they have. So, [44:17] to bring to the table. Um, and then boys [44:20] basketball, we have Jared Binkmire, who [44:22] is new. So, some of you guys know him [44:24] from the community, but he's new. And [44:26] then he's got basically the staff is [44:28] still the same. He's got a couple people [44:30] from um, you know, from uh, the past [44:33] year's staff. So, does anybody have any [44:36] questions on on that? [44:38] >> Has it been pretty easy to find coaches [44:40] or is it [44:41] >> Yeah, it actually really has. Yeah, for [44:43] a matter of fact, it has. Um, you know, [44:45] we just hired for golf and we had a [44:48] couple people that applied for that. Um, [44:51] for basketball as well. I was kind of [44:53] surprised with, you know, getting into [44:56] it being so late in the year. I didn't [44:58] think that we were going to have as many [45:00] applicants as we did. So, um, I think [45:02] that's good. I think in years past, I [45:04] know that that's been kind of tough. [45:06] >> And so, it makes obviously the job a [45:10] little easier, but also harder, too, to [45:11] figure out who the best candidate is. [45:13] So, um, no, that's been great. I think [45:16] the one thing that I really like is we [45:18] do have a lot of volunteers that want to [45:19] help, [45:20] >> which is always really nice. Um, you [45:22] know, I talked to variety of different [45:24] schools and to get people to volunteer [45:26] is always very difficult. So, um, yeah. [45:29] No, it's been it's been great to be able [45:31] to kind of meet everybody and get the [45:34] year kind of going. So, um I know like [45:37] we have bunch of stuff that's going on [45:39] even tomorrow like we have varsity [45:41] basketball and we have middle school [45:43] basketball and hockey going on. So, it's [45:45] going to be kind of chaotic, but it'll [45:46] be fun. So, yeah, hopefully you guys get [45:49] out to some games this year. [45:51] >> Perfect. I'm here to talk a little bit [47:32] about Unified Champion Schools. So, we [47:35] were lucky enough to be a Unified [47:36] Champion School, which some people might [47:38] not know. So, just a little [47:40] introduction. and what is Unifi, our [47:41] goals, some background, and then what we [47:44] currently do, and then what we're kind [47:46] of asking for is for Unifi to be [47:48] recognized as a school activity. [47:50] [snorts] [47:50] So, me, I'm wearing the same shirt [47:53] today. [laughter] [47:55] Kind of embarrassing, but this is my [47:57] third year teaching. Um, this second [47:59] year doing unified in the sewer. Um, I [48:02] was a unified partner um in a unified [48:05] class when I was in high school. So, we [48:07] refer to like our students with [48:08] disabilities as the athletes and then [48:11] the students without disabilities as [48:12] unified partners. So [48:15] >> I'm just quick for every DAPE [laughter] [48:18] >> yes [48:19] >> stands for [48:20] >> developmental adapted physical [48:21] education. Yes. So I teach high school [48:24] um health ed and then unified and then [48:26] DAP which is developmental adapted [48:28] physical education. So students with [48:31] disabilities if they are able to [48:34] participate maybe um or they have some [48:37] gross motor needs um they are sent to me [48:40] and we do more of like a one-on-one [48:42] small group fight type of thing. [48:44] >> Some of them K12. [48:46] >> Yeah. For me. [48:47] >> Yep. Yes. So, Unifi Champion [48:49] [clears throat] Schools is a program [48:50] that partners with Special Olympics. Um [48:53] they're just this is like their thing [48:56] and they are great like resource and I [48:58] have like a person who I'm in contact [49:00] with um to do all the things, but they [49:03] are just kind of a partner with me, a [49:05] resource. Um, so it's a program that [49:08] fosters the inclusion of students with [49:09] and without disabilities in the schools. [49:14] So the goal is to create a more [49:16] inclusive environment um and to just get [49:20] all kids knowing each other. So more [49:23] opportunities for students with and [49:24] without disabilities. So, a lot of even [49:27] our students without disabilities, maybe [49:29] they're not your typical athletes are. [49:31] Maybe they are and sometimes they aren't [49:35] good enough to play on basketball team, [49:37] right? But they can play unified [49:39] basketball with other students to [49:41] instill that sense of team and [49:44] community. So, Special Olympics started [49:47] in 1968 [49:49] um with just sports for adults and [49:52] hoping that through the participation of [49:54] sports and [49:55] that um people with disabilities would [49:59] live greater lives, right? Like have [50:00] that sense of community. Um now we have [50:03] over 200 schools in Minnesota that are [50:05] unified champion schools and many other [50:07] schools that are doing similar but not [50:10] partnered with Special Olympics and [50:11] technically unified school. [50:14] So there's three kind of pillars to this [50:17] unified champion school thing. And since [50:19] I'm partnered with Special Olympics, I [50:21] am responsible for carrying these out [50:24] throughout the school. So, inclusive [50:25] student leadership, unified sports, and [50:27] whole school engagement. Our two lovely [50:30] ladies here are great in um our unified [50:33] club. So, thank you guys. So, inclusive [50:38] student leadership might be a little [50:40] delayed. Um we have our unified club [50:42] which does a lot of things. We usually [50:45] meet during Rise. Um, and we do the [50:48] Johnny Java coffee cart on Fridays. Um, [50:51] and then we meet also on Thursdays in [50:53] Rise and like prep all that stuff. [50:56] Offers like job skills for students with [50:59] and without disabilities and delivering [51:00] and stuff. Um, student leadership [51:03] summits. So, we did go to a student [51:05] leadership summit on the 12th of [51:07] November, which is super fun. and I left [51:09] feeling just like I had so many ideas [51:12] that I want to carry out too. Um I'm [51:14] sure students are very on board and [51:17] supportive with all that. Um and then [51:19] they have the student board of directors [51:20] which is more at that special Olympics [51:22] level which we're not quite we don't [51:24] quite have any students involved in that [51:26] yet, but we have some 10th graders who [51:28] um are interested. So then we have [51:31] unified sports. So that's our bowling, [51:34] our basketball, and our track that we [51:36] do. Um we also have unified fied which [51:39] is a class that we do during the school [51:41] day. Um [51:44] we meet every day of the week. We do [51:46] some weight rooms and traditional fire [51:48] activities, some fun like baking [51:51] activities on Mondays. Um and then [51:54] reflection as well. And then unified [51:56] wellness is another option which we [51:58] currently don't have. And then whole [52:00] school engagement is that third pillar. [52:02] Um so social inclusion campaign. So last [52:05] year we did the World Kindness Day um [52:08] assembly at both schools and then we did [52:12] the um spread the word to end the word [52:15] campaign. We'll talk about end of our [52:17] word later second semester last year. Um [52:21] then some fundraising events last year [52:23] we did like t-shirt sales. Uh we did we [52:27] do the coffee cart and then the floor [52:29] plunge is our biggest fundraiser that we [52:31] do. [52:33] So, [52:35] um, students with disabilities, right, [52:36] used to not be in schools at all. They [52:39] were not educated. And then we said, [52:40] "Okay, you can have your own school, but [52:42] you're going to be over here." And then [52:43] we said, "Okay, well, you can be in the [52:44] school, but maybe you're in a certain [52:46] hallway or this wing." And then [52:48] inclusion is everyone together, but [52:51] unified is that next step where it's [52:52] like you're friends and you're [52:56] supporting each other and it's not just [52:58] your body existing in the room. Um, 97% [53:03] these are statistics from Special [53:04] Olympics but 97% of students report with [53:08] disabilities report that unified has [53:10] made a positive difference in their [53:11] confidence levels and you can see that [53:13] totally like so many students just [53:17] flourish in this environment and it's so [53:19] cool and then 95% of students in general [53:22] report that unified has made a more [53:24] social inclusive environment in their [53:26] school and then 98% of school liaison so [53:29] that's me um report a reduction of [53:32] bullying, teasing, and offensive [53:33] language in their school. So, pretty [53:36] nice statistics. So, currently LSH [53:40] Unified is doing these things. Um, some [53:44] of them I already mentioned, but [53:48] they will kind of stay spread the word [53:49] to end the world. Polar Plunge t-shirt [53:52] sales are giant Java attending [53:54] leadership conferences, unified club [53:56] weekly, giant Java. Sometimes, well, [53:59] twice a week we meet, but do coffee once [54:01] a week. Um, unified bowling is we do [54:04] eight weeks at the WOW zone, so one time [54:08] a week. Um, last year we had like 20ome [54:10] kids. We could barely fit in the [54:12] wheelchair bus. We had to some days take [54:14] a van separately. Um, [54:18] so hoping to do that again this year. [54:20] And then we did unified track which was [54:22] such a fun day. um we was one day but a [54:26] lot of coordinating with other schools [54:28] to make it happen and then unified PE [54:30] which is a class that we do every day [54:32] and then this year we are also doing [54:35] unified basketball. Um the cool thing [54:38] with unified community schools is they [54:40] try to make it accessible for the [54:42] students. So they do run these things [54:44] during the school day. For example like [54:46] the unified basketball um their [54:49] regionals and their state tournament [54:50] would happen during the school day. So, [54:52] that's one of my biggest pushes to get [54:53] this approved as a school activity. Um, [54:56] so we can allow these things. They don't [54:58] take up a ton of time. Um, a day or two, [55:02] not much more than, [clears throat] you [55:04] know, some other sports would miss for [55:05] school, but um it's something really [55:09] cool. So, I know we like to see some [55:11] hours, and I roughly counted, um, some [55:16] hours of my extra time that I'm putting [55:18] in. So for bowling, we have bowling for [55:22] eight weeks. Wait, 24. [55:25] Okay, 24 hours. So [55:28] we do like three hours a week. We leave [55:29] here three back at like six um for eight [55:32] weeks and then [55:36] I have to spend time Yeah. arranging [55:37] with the bowling alley and with the bus [55:41] and getting donations [55:43] um funded by us. So I reached out to [55:45] many many businesses and got money to [55:48] fund this. Um but is not cheap on bus. [55:52] Um and [55:54] a lot of our students wouldn't be able [55:56] to participate. They had to pay or get [55:58] there themselves. So I found some [56:01] amazing colleagues that help go there. [56:05] There was like more volunteers there and [56:07] they are asking me again like bullied [56:10] and so just to help like kind of like um [56:13] to be there. So it's not just me. Um so [56:16] for basketball potentially three full [56:19] day events. So we will practice during [56:21] rise but then we'll have one day at [56:22] regionals in Shaki and then if we [56:24] qualify two days at state um which is at [56:28] the target center and they make a huge [56:30] deal out of it and it's super fun. And [56:32] then the track and field day. So a full [56:34] day. Um but then yeah, many hours [56:36] getting all the concession stand and [56:38] stuff, volunteers, meeting with [56:39] volunteers, meeting with the athletes, [56:40] training the athletes. [56:42] Um and all that stuff. The unified club [56:46] where we do coffee cart prep. I'm always [56:48] bringing Rachel my slips. [56:51] Couple dollars here, couple dollars [56:53] there. So just a lot of hours that um [56:55] have been put into that. [56:58] Um [57:00] and then that is also where we are [57:03] running like the unified basketball and [57:04] stuff out of is like the unified club [57:06] technically. Um and then additional [57:09] activities like the polar plunge [57:10] leadership conference which I didn't [57:12] include but those are also extra things [57:15] that we doing some extra hours. So [57:20] I just put for the past year [57:25] um the funds that I raised. So, for each [57:27] of these people, reaching out, getting [57:29] the check, getting check deposited, [57:32] um, make sure it's in the account, [57:34] writing thank you letters, um, doing all [57:38] that stuff. So, a lot of very generous [57:41] people that were able to make it happen. [57:43] It was like roughly about $250 a week to [57:47] go. So, [57:50] yeah, [57:52] our biggest one was the polar plunge. [57:54] Um, we had some really big [57:57] people that raised money for that and I [58:00] hope to even get more this year. [58:06] Okay. [58:08] Okay. So, what we're asking is that um, [58:11] you guys consider unified champion [58:12] school leaison being a siphoned and [58:15] school recognized activity. It's a [58:17] growing program and has been super [58:19] awesome and has shown a massive impact [58:23] throughout the whole school. Um, I know [58:26] many of you have seen and felt the [58:28] impact and just hoping to keep this [58:32] movement going. Um, it is a lot of work [58:34] that I've put in and like some people [58:36] too have helped, right? Like couldn't do [58:38] it alone, especially like the track day, [58:40] right? we have all hands on deck but um [58:44] just yeah to keep it going whether it's [58:47] just recognized or whatnot just it's [58:51] kind of what I ask we're asking so if [58:54] you guys have any questions [58:57] it's kind of a lot so the I also wanted [58:59] to just yeah the unified bowling is [59:01] totally separate than like we have our [59:03] Minnesota State High School League [59:04] adaptive bowling [59:05] >> I know I was talking to some people they [59:07] were like thought it was the same but [59:09] that's separate So the Minnesota State [59:11] High School League adapted bowling that [59:12] is our only like adapted sport that the [59:15] school recognizes. So that is just [59:18] students with disabilities. So it is [59:20] awesome for them to go and participate, [59:23] but it's super cool. Um and even some [59:27] students with disabilities [59:29] don't want to do adapted bowling per se, [59:32] right? But they totally want to do [59:36] unified bowling because people don't [59:37] want to be put in that box sometimes. [59:39] So, um, yeah, we have a question. [59:45] That's kind of a lot. [59:46] >> Students can participate in a wheelchair [59:48] track. [59:48] >> Yes, we've had a wheelchair track. [59:51] >> Yes. [59:51] >> State champion. [59:52] >> Yes. [59:53] >> Uh, so there is there are other options [59:55] besides bowling necessarily, but not [59:57] limited. [59:58] >> Adapted sports. Okay. [59:59] >> Yeah. So, that is Yeah. So, adapted [60:02] bowling is the only one that we have [60:04] through Mass. Any student wheelchair. um [60:08] a lot of students with intellectual [60:10] disabilities is like that cognitive [60:11] piece um for special Olympics but yes I [60:16] know we've also in the past I was in [60:17] here but had a student in the wheelchair [60:19] who play tennis right [60:21] >> oh yeah she play tennis too [60:24] >> yes yes I know [60:26] >> totally [60:27] >> the other thing that I hope that you're [60:29] considering so that particular student [60:31] was a good friend of my daughters spent [60:33] a lot of time together um one [60:36] frustration that we had over the years [60:38] and I hope that maybe as you work on [60:40] your inclusion activities [60:42] >> is that oftentimes there are little [60:44] decisions that are made that I don't [60:46] think anyone's doing with poor intention [60:49] but limit the ability. So like one that [60:52] happened every year is like the [60:56] homecoming dance the door that was open [60:59] for students to come to the homecoming [61:00] dance is this one back this one over [61:02] here that requires going up a flight of [61:04] stairs. [61:05] >> Yeah, I know. So there's no barriers [61:07] that are [61:08] >> and so it's just frustrating that that [61:10] would happen. Like [61:11] >> yeah, [61:11] >> I know nobody on student council was [61:13] trying to be unexclusionary or anything [61:15] like that, but like those are the little [61:17] things that are frustrating that limit [61:20] people's, you know, make them feel [61:22] otherred or like they're not welcomed or [61:25] or you're trying to help them get up [61:28] this crazy hill or whatever. Or they [61:30] someone kept locking the door the [61:33] entrance to the You know, there's the [61:36] one which you can go down the track. [61:37] Someone would just [61:40] >> lock that. Not you, but like a volunteer [61:42] would come along and lock it. And it's [61:44] like, well, that's the only way she [61:45] could get down to play in the band for [61:48] the prep band, right? So, like [61:50] >> there's many barriers that we don't [61:52] realize unless we're in the shoes of a [61:55] parent of someone. [64:16] And I think there just across the board, [64:18] like there's so many different aspects [64:21] of this being good for our school and [64:24] good learning experiences for our kids [64:26] across the board and like the impact [64:28] that it's putting on those kids, too, [64:30] which I think is great, right? Because [64:33] anywhere when you're in high school that [64:35] these four years of high school are some [64:37] of the best years for these kids, right? [64:39] Doesn't matter. It's for you guys and [64:41] your athletic experience and for the [64:44] same kids, you know, in unified.
