The commission reviewed a proposal to install a shade structure or pavilion at Lions Park in 2026, part of a larger initiative to add five new pavilions city-wide. The significant lack of shade at Lions Park due to prior tree removal and high visitor requests was a key driver. Staff highlighted the efficiency of integrating this project with other planned construction at the park. Discussion points included potential location constraints, balancing usage with other park amenities like pickleball and the playground, and the desire for adaptable designs.

The commission addressed the urgent need to replace the Lions Park playground, which is 25 years old and presents safety hazards due to surface drop issues. Survey data highlighted Lions Park as the most visited park with high playground usage. Staff proposed a new playground for ages 5-12, incorporating teenage features, ADA accessibility, and potentially innovative surfacing in high-wear areas, funded by the park dedication fund. Commissioners emphasized the need for age-appropriate separation and the inclusion of elements for toddlers and adaptive play, as well as the benefit of water access.

The Salman Zera Center sought approval to host a stargazing event on October 11th, 2025, at Sunfish Lake Park, which would require extending park hours past dusk until 10:30 p.m. Building on the success of a similar, popular event last year that attracted 40 people, the request aimed to continue community engagement. Safety concerns regarding participant movement in the unlit parking lot were addressed by the program manager, who confirmed lighting on the building and staff assistance with flashlights. No backup date was planned.

Lions Park is one of our biggest um probably requests down at Lions Park is shade. At the construction of that park in 2017, they redid the pickle ball courts, the new, um, ball field, and just, uh, the parking lots in general. Um, we lost some large trees in there... Lost a lot of shade uh, when they redid that.

Staff has asked or coming forward now to ask the parks commission if we're looking if if Lions Park is a good idea to put a shade structure there or pavilion. Now would be the time to do it. Um versus coming back potentially in two years or a third year to close down the park to make that to make that happen.

I would agree with that. I would have a tendency because of the other shelter to provide justification more to the other amenities. So, uh, putting it towards that side, which is probably the only place it'll fit, but gear it more towards the playground, the pickle ball, and those types of things.

Lions Park playground was installed in 2000 and currently surpassed its lifespan that was slated for um 25 years. It's currently in our it's currently in our uh CIP uh for for next year as well.

Lions Park is also listed as the number one park most often visited by users. Survey results also showed that playground use was the second most common activity used for that park. right behind our baseball.

The largest safety concern is the level of drop between the slides and the surface.

We do need to separate those age age differences within that playground set as well. So, um, having a toddler set, um, does need to have some distance requirements from that 5 to 12 year old and anything above that 12 year old needs to have distance requirements as well.

I would be interested in knowing what certain areas would cost. It might it might really reduce the play features that we get, but if that's the number one park used, you know, by the time you mulch it over and over again, you're just Yeah, I would just be as an alternate or something of that sorts just to see what that might be.

I really support this because again, I think you it's already listed the safety issues. Um, you can tell from a distance that it needs to be upgraded and the water sounds good, but it might work out better. And the other pavilion, it they needed water out there. And the same thing about the I agree with the range of age, and we're going to need to put some things on that. I like we got the ADA compliance. I like we're going to park uh pave that parking lot. So, all of that I think is a good idea.

Would the parks commission be um would would the parks commission consider recommending the Salman Zero Center to hold the stargazing event on October 11th? Um this does go beyond our open times for our park. Our our normal hours are till dusk and this event will be starting likely later after that.

Stargazing Event 2025 at Sunfish Lake Park

Last year we did a little stargazing event and came and asked for permission. We appreciated that. We ended up cutting off at 40 people. Um, so it became very popular.

Stargazing Event 2025 at Sunfish Lake Park

I guess the only the only thing I would have a concern about is the safety. Just moving people in the the park parking lot and if as long as that can be done safely then I'm all in favor.
