[0:06] Spike is hammered down.
[0:25] You later.
[0:50] It's a frosty Friday evening at Mameidi,
[0:54] but you can warm up with us. We'll
[0:56] extend an invite to you and we hope
[0:59] you'll join us for this edition of high
[1:01] school girls basketball on SEC Sports.
[1:03] In just a couple of minutes, we'll see a
[1:06] Metro East battle unfold between the
[1:08] Modi Zephers and the Two Rivers
[1:10] Warriors.
[1:12] Good evening everyone. I'm Mike Been.
[1:14] He's Carl Warner. And Carl, often times
[1:17] you and I, we're pretty diligent in our
[1:19] prep work during the day. We'll look at
[1:22] records, schedules, stats, notes that
[1:26] attract our attention. But tonight, we
[1:29] pretty much can throw them out the
[1:30] window. And that's because both teams
[1:32] are playing short-handed due to injury
[1:35] and illness. Two Rivers down one of
[1:36] their top scorers and Landis Williamson
[1:38] Andrews and Mamemidi without Delaney
[1:41] Dermabouth who's in concussion protocol
[1:43] and Berkeley Blazdale recovering from
[1:45] the flu. So a lot of what we expected
[1:48] tonight won't be the case. How does that
[1:51] add to the strategy knowing that both
[1:55] teams are going to send up some players
[1:56] we don't normally see? Well, it's great
[1:58] to be with you, Mike. And as you
[2:00] mentioned, tonight is going to be so
[2:01] interesting because of the absence of
[2:03] some of the the key players. And not
[2:05] just for us as broadcasters, but when it
[2:07] comes to these coaches preparing to set
[2:10] their players up for success against
[2:12] their future opponents, it's like, "Oh,
[2:13] we'll throw this out the window, throw
[2:15] this player out the window." At a
[2:16] certain point, you just got to know your
[2:18] players well enough to trust them in the
[2:20] big moments and and come in for the
[2:22] substitutions and and be there when it
[2:24] matters the most.
[2:26] >> Well, don't worry, Carl. I have no plans
[2:27] to throw you out the window.
[2:29] >> Oh, thank you very much.
[2:33] >> But there's Sophia Amenson who will be
[2:35] available tonight. Two Rivers missing a
[2:37] few games from their database, but
[2:39] Amenson based on the information we have
[2:41] averaging 16 points per game. And the
[2:44] Two Rivers Warriors, they're not a team
[2:46] that has a headliner like Providence
[2:48] Academy and Madden Greenway or Crosby
[2:50] Iron and Tory Orline. But when Two
[2:52] Rivers plays well, they have that
[2:54] scrappy defense, a strong team dynamic,
[2:57] and I think they'll have to rely on that
[2:59] a little more knowing one of their key
[3:01] pieces is out with the Bone Bruise.
[3:03] That's Landon Williamson, Landis
[3:05] Williamson Andrews.
[3:06] >> And Two Rivers has been absolutely so
[3:08] powerful. And as we get here to Mameidi,
[3:11] we talk about Grace Pros. And in the 14
[3:14] reported games statistically,
[3:16] she's got quite the resume herself. In
[3:19] 14 games, she's got 286 points. She's
[3:21] averaging almost 21 points a game and
[3:24] her game high was 33 in a 20point
[3:26] victory at Similey on December 12th.
[3:29] This should be an excellent matchup
[3:30] tonight. Absolutely. When pros does
[3:32] well, Mameidi does well.
[3:36] >> They're five and 10.
[3:40] >> Two Rivers 11 and four. There's that's
[3:43] not Nia Holly.
[3:46] She's at the end of the line. But we'll
[3:47] talk more after the Star Spangle Banner.
[4:39] Don't know.
[5:04] Heat. Heat.
[5:14] Few
[5:35] members of the pep band serinating us
[5:37] with the star spangled banner. That
[5:40] >> was a unique but amazing rendition, I
[5:42] got to say.
[5:45] And some followup on Two Rivers as we
[5:48] announced the starters. Carl, you and I
[5:50] talked about this before the game. Two
[5:52] Rivers, what's impressive about their
[5:55] 11-4 mark is not just the record itself,
[5:58] but entering the season, they had some
[6:00] uncertainties about their team dynamic,
[6:03] their cohesiveness when one of their top
[6:04] scorers, Ana Gorman, transferred to
[6:06] Minneapolis North. And while her
[6:08] presence would certainly be useful for
[6:11] Two Rivers, the fact that they've
[6:13] managed to put together a strong season
[6:16] so far, 11 and four, tells you there's a
[6:18] lot of talent and there's a lot of buyin
[6:20] with the players that are here.
[6:21] >> Absolutely. And that is something you
[6:23] can't put a price on is the team buy in
[6:26] to each other as teammates and the
[6:28] culture and the willingness to work even
[6:31] when even when members of the team you
[6:33] thought were going to be here are no
[6:34] longer in the building. And for Mameidi,
[6:38] no Dumber, no Blazedell. So here's a
[6:41] look at what the scoring breakdown is
[6:43] like. Grace pros, you saw in the open
[6:44] 20.4 a game. Lucy Pier is next at three
[6:48] and a half. Mir Nelson 3.3.
[6:51] Reena Becker 2.9.
[6:54] So Mamemidi will have to do a little bit
[6:56] of searching to find offense. A lot of
[6:59] youth in that starting five, Carl. So
[7:03] Eidi could run into some headwinds, but
[7:05] when I spoke with Anisha Fischer
[7:06] beforehand, she said it could also be a
[7:08] good learning tool for the youngsters as
[7:11] they get accustomed to varsity ball.
[7:13] >> And hey, there is some people are
[7:16] students at the school of there's no
[7:18] there's no better way of learning than
[7:19] being thrown in the deep end. And for a
[7:21] few of these starters tonight, they're
[7:23] either going to sink or they're going to
[7:24] swim. That's how I started my broadcast
[7:27] career 20 years ago. I just threw myself
[7:29] into the fire. Fortunately, I have yet
[7:31] to suffer any burns.
[7:33] >> And we've had enough life jackets along
[7:35] the way as well.
[7:37] >> Certainly more than the Titanic.
[7:39] >> Oh, yes.
[7:41] Well, thankfully things have changed in
[7:43] the last 114 years.
[7:46] >> I have a question for you, Carl. Will
[7:48] you need any proverbial life jackets
[7:50] with the Bills playoff game tomorrow?
[7:52] >> Um, at least a couple depending on how
[7:55] deadly that Broncos defense is.
[7:57] >> And that's going to be a fun game. This
[7:58] should be a lot of fun, too. The
[7:59] starters for the two sides for Two
[8:02] Rivers, it's Isabelle Vanett, Katie
[8:04] Divine, Claire Spangenberg, Sophia
[8:07] Amenson, and Tegan Lyles. Mabidai will
[8:10] start Reena Becker,
[8:13] Mera Nelson, the seventh grader, Lucy
[8:16] Pier, the eighth grader, McKenna Fusl,
[8:19] the freshman, and Grace Pros, the
[8:21] junior. Of course, Grace the daughter of
[8:24] former head coach Eric Pros.
[8:26] Eric told me a couple years ago he plans
[8:29] to get back into coaching, but he's
[8:31] going to wait till after his daughter
[8:32] makes his way through because he wanted
[8:34] to be just a fan. And I can certainly
[8:36] respect that because it's one thing to
[8:38] be a coach, it's another when your kid
[8:40] is one of the players out there.
[8:41] >> I have nothing but respect for that
[8:42] decision. It is so hard to to make that
[8:46] transition of coach and parent and well,
[8:49] obviously I'm not a parent. I would know
[8:50] nothing about that. But what I'm saying
[8:52] is like it can it it it can put a lot of
[8:54] pressure on on the kid and honestly it's
[8:56] really nice to just focus. But away we
[8:58] go. Away we go indeed.
[9:01] And another family tie Anisha Fiser the
[9:04] Mamemidi head coach last year got to
[9:06] coach against her youngest sister or I
[9:09] believe youngest sister Taylor Starks.
[9:12] Taylor now at Hamlin but last year she
[9:14] was at Dasal where Anisha played her
[9:16] high school ball. So we have a doover on
[9:19] the jump ball. That's a rare sight as
[9:22] we're underway here at Madameai. Zephris
[9:25] with the first possession. There is
[9:26] Grace Pros again. If she shoots well,
[9:28] Mameidi has a good chance of getting a
[9:30] victory tonight. Reena Becker collecting
[9:32] it at the high post. Wide open down low.
[9:35] A little more finesse is what Mameidi
[9:37] needed. Carl, I say this a lot, those
[9:40] are the buckets you really want to cash
[9:41] in on.
[9:42] >> And you talk about the streaks as we get
[9:43] going tonight. Mameidi, they they've won
[9:46] they've won one game um as their streak,
[9:49] but they've lost three of their last
[9:50] five as we already have a timeout here.
[9:55] >> 26 seconds into the game. That might be
[9:58] a state record.
[9:59] >> That is a fascinating thing. I feel like
[10:01] the only time we've ever seen a timeout
[10:03] this early in the game is if there's
[10:04] something wrong with the building or
[10:05] with the ball,
[10:07] >> like if the lights went out or
[10:09] something, but
[10:09] >> or maybe a milestone if it gets hit
[10:11] early.
[10:11] >> Oh, sure. Right. But nonetheless, I
[10:14] don't see anybody celebrating too hard
[10:15] right now. So, I don't think anybody
[10:16] just hit their their uh 10,000th point.
[10:19] >> No, Two Rivers called it. There's Anisha
[10:21] Fischer, the head coach for Monamidi.
[10:23] Two Rivers called it. And I think it had
[10:25] to do with the blown coverage down low.
[10:28] >> And so, just resetting the expectation
[10:30] before they get too far into this game.
[10:32] And uh Two Rivers, they've won four
[10:34] games in a row. They've won six of their
[10:36] last seven games. Mameidi, on the other
[10:38] hand, they've lost three of their last
[10:40] five. So when it comes down to it,
[10:42] Mameidi has defeated Two Rivers 11 games
[10:46] in a row and Two Rivers looking to break
[10:48] that streak tonight.
[10:50] You saw Nia Holly a moment ago and Nia
[10:53] is not afraid to get on you. She is a
[10:56] part of the Hopkins pipeline. Won a
[10:58] couple of state titles, Miss Basketball
[11:00] 2016, but she had Brian Cosgriff as her
[11:02] head coach and he was known for
[11:05] accountability. Mia, if you do something
[11:08] she doesn't approve of, she will let you
[11:10] know. Eight on the shot clock for the
[11:13] Zephers.
[11:16] This is Pros pulls up offline. Deacon
[11:19] Lyles collects the rebound. Lyles the
[11:22] senior.
[11:25] Here comes Isabelle Vanett. Draws a
[11:27] foul. She'll shoot two. Isabelle part of
[11:29] a lengthy lineage
[11:32] of siblings who play basketball. Her
[11:34] oldest Michaela was a 2000 point score
[11:37] at Como Park. Shaniah playing division
[11:39] one at Kennesaw State.
[11:45] Think about Two Rivers and the mentality
[11:47] that's going into this game. We talked
[11:49] about how long it's been since they've
[11:51] beat Mameidi. The the the day they last
[11:54] beat them was February 4th, 2020. I was
[11:57] a junior in high school. That was 2,173
[12:01] days ago. When you get into the
[12:03] thousands when it comes to these
[12:04] streaks, especially 2,000, that can
[12:06] really put a burden on you, a conference
[12:10] rival like this.
[12:12] I know you enjoy that kind of calendar
[12:14] math, Carl. And that is Yeah, one way to
[12:17] put that in perspective.
[12:20] That was in the co year. No, right
[12:21] before the pandemic, actually.
[12:23] >> That was a month before the pandemic
[12:25] started.
[12:28] >> Want to feel old?
[12:30] Um, I'm ready for it.
[12:33] >> That was more for the viewers out there.
[12:35] >> Oh, okay. I thought you were going to
[12:36] say what you were doing in uh in uh as
[12:39] your junior year of high school.
[12:40] >> Well, I could tell you, but I wasn't
[12:42] doing that. Getting a turnaround post up
[12:44] like Deacon Lyles just did. Three
[12:46] nothing. Two Rivers over Mabidai.
[12:51] Two Rivers looking to press.
[12:53] That's fustal.
[12:56] >> Got it across to pros after Ly was
[12:58] applying pressure.
[13:01] Pros.
[13:03] Pros putting the moves on and she'll
[13:05] shoot two. She went down hard, but she's
[13:08] getting right back up.
[13:12] Couple of fun facts about Grace Pros.
[13:14] After school, she will shoot for 30 to
[13:17] 45 minutes.
[13:20] And she also is an afficionado of
[13:22] mangoes.
[13:25] >> Really? That is a
[13:28] that is a uh interesting
[13:32] >> thing to be an afficionado of
[13:36] 20.4 game. There's a 30point game tour
[13:41] credit.
[13:42] Knocks down the freebies and it's 3-2.
[13:49] Pros's first and second points of the
[13:51] night respectively. We'll see how many
[13:52] she's able to knock down as Two Rivers
[13:56] sets the momentum right back. Katie
[13:58] Divine gets the Plinko bounce for her
[14:00] first field goal.
[14:03] This is Mera Nelson, the seventh grader.
[14:06] Of course, seventh graders no stranger
[14:08] to varsity basketball, especially on the
[14:10] girls side. Modai having all sorts of
[14:13] trouble. And Carl, I say this a lot,
[14:17] >> as play by play or color, one little
[14:19] slip up can mess up an entire play as we
[14:20] just saw.
[14:22] >> And just not being able to get in rhythm
[14:24] of what they wanted to do with that
[14:25] play. When the first thing goes goes
[14:27] arai, then that's going to hit the
[14:29] second domino and the third one. And
[14:31] just like that, you lost a possession.
[14:36] Two Rivers looking for the dump down,
[14:38] but reading the pass was number 24. I'll
[14:40] get her name in a minute. I believe
[14:42] that's Caitlyn O' Conor. She's not on
[14:44] varsity, but as we've said with Mameidi
[14:47] down a few players, they are having to
[14:49] move up some figures on the depth shard.
[14:51] Two Rivers will take over.
[14:52] >> Okconor, a ninth grader, definitely not
[14:56] the first underassman or middle schooler
[14:58] we'll see in this game.
[15:02] >> But that just goes to show the amount of
[15:03] trust that both of these coaches have in
[15:05] some of their younger players.
[15:07] Banette
[15:10] >> 3 second call on Amenson.
[15:14] >> That's always an interesting topic of
[15:16] conversation when it comes to 3 seconds,
[15:19] the 3se secondond violation is at what
[15:21] point in youth basketball, and I know
[15:23] this isn't necessarily youth basketball.
[15:25] It's varsity, so they deserve varsity
[15:27] standards. But at what point do you
[15:29] really start heavily enforcing the 3
[15:31] seconds rule? Two Rivers enforcing a
[15:34] press. They've got Mameidi trapped in
[15:36] the corner. They're not going to get it
[15:37] across in time.
[15:40] >> It looked like they had a chance, but I
[15:42] mean, Two Rivers did an amazing job of
[15:44] pinning Mameidi down in this corner, the
[15:47] corner nearest us.
[15:51] >> And that is how you respond to a miscu.
[15:53] And to your point about the 3-second
[15:55] call, another
[15:57] element to it, Carl, that I often wonder
[15:59] about, as I understand it, 3 seconds is
[16:02] based on being within arms length of an
[16:05] assignment. And how does that factor for
[16:08] a lengthier player like Sophia Amenson,
[16:10] a taller player? Do they take wingspan
[16:12] into consideration or is it just
[16:13] averages?
[16:16] >> You wonder. I mean, it's just like the
[16:17] strike zone thing. I mean, like Jose
[16:19] Altuve and Aaron Judge, do they have the
[16:21] same strike zone or
[16:23] >> You're not suggesting an ABS for a
[16:25] 3second violation, are you?
[16:27] >> No, absolutely not. The the last thing
[16:29] we need is more robots on Piran
[16:32] Sports. But here's a deep three for
[16:35] Vanette. Burries it. My goodness.
[16:39] >> That is part of the Vanett secret sauce.
[16:42] Michaela was an extraordinaire from
[16:44] three-point range and then gets the
[16:45] steal off the inbound. Now Amenson
[16:47] looking to post up. Can't get the
[16:49] bounce. Vanett has four points on the
[16:51] night. Now less than four minutes into
[16:54] this game. Madame still being a little
[16:57] bit loose with their passes here as
[16:59] Pearl pulls up. Three-pointer short.
[17:02] Rebound secured by Pier. Pros. Vanett's
[17:06] honor. Finds the open player. That's
[17:09] Reena Becker. But it comes up long high.
[17:10] Karen bounces right back to her. And now
[17:13] Pros looking to slice her way inside.
[17:15] Draws the foul on Lyanna Windy.
[17:20] >> It is interesting. Mameida coming into
[17:22] this game tonight a losing record. I
[17:24] mean double over. They're 5-10. But in
[17:26] the Metro East they are right at the
[17:28] top. They're 4-1 right now in third
[17:31] place this game between two 4-1 Metro
[17:33] East teams. Whoever wins this will be in
[17:36] second place at the end of the night.
[17:38] Hill Murray of course in first. That's
[17:40] who everyone is chasing. They've got
[17:42] quite the team over there. Pros are
[17:44] three offline. Yeah, Hill Murray. They
[17:46] are 5-0 in conference play to start the
[17:48] season. It
[17:49] >> looks like it's going to be an uphill
[17:51] battle for everybody else.
[17:53] >> Vanett steps into the three. Comes up
[17:55] short. Amenson there for the rebound and
[17:57] the put back.
[18:03] 10-2 Two Rivers after a sluggish start
[18:05] finding their rhythm as they build an
[18:08] early lead. Madame needs some juice here
[18:12] and that'll help. Some three-point juice
[18:15] squeezed by Grace Bros. Maybe it was
[18:18] three-point mango juice.
[18:21] >> I'll show myself out. I wonder I wonder
[18:23] if there's variations of mangoes and if
[18:25] she has a a favorite variation, but
[18:28] we're going to get the travel call here.
[18:31] >> That's rare to see Isabelle Vanett
[18:34] saying, "What in the world?"
[18:37] I didn't catch it from here, but I'm
[18:38] guessing she shuffled her feet as she
[18:40] was going to pass from right to left.
[18:42] So, at this point in this 5 to 10 game,
[18:46] Grace Pros has all five points for
[18:48] Mameidi. And although she's a fantastic
[18:51] player, they're not going to be able to
[18:52] have her do everything to carry her to
[18:54] carry Mameidi to a win.
[18:56] >> It's reminiscent of St. Croy Lutheran. I
[18:58] saw them in a game on Monday where they
[19:01] beat Marinatha Cali Oakland single game
[19:03] school record 40 points. But kind of
[19:06] like Mamemidi, they don't have a whole
[19:08] lot of depth outside their top players.
[19:09] And Mameidi,
[19:12] like you said, Carl, will have to find
[19:14] other sources of offense. That was a
[19:16] near travel.
[19:19] >> Making a move. Ava Shep making lemonade
[19:22] out of lemons. And now just like that,
[19:24] the Zephers have closed the gap down to
[19:27] three. It looked like a broken play
[19:30] until sheep was able to make something
[19:31] of it. Here's Divine. She had a big roll
[19:35] off the bench last year in a win over
[19:37] Southwest.
[19:39] Liles recovers the rebound.
[19:45] Vanett for three. Yes,
[19:52] Vanette putting on a show. She already
[19:54] has seven. Couple of threes in the early
[19:57] going. Mameidi gets down low in
[19:59] transition. But a little too much
[20:01] mustard for Stella Sufort. Now Mameidi
[20:05] there are looking to tie their longest
[20:07] winning streak of the year tonight which
[20:09] is two. They got that back in December
[20:11] with a win at Simley and versus Hastings
[20:13] on the 12th and 16th. And then you take
[20:16] a look there on the screen, the record
[20:18] versus teams below and above 500. And
[20:20] you take a look at Two Rivers and they
[20:23] have taken care of business when they're
[20:25] facing in theory inferior opponents.
[20:32] High low. Amenson
[20:35] draws the push foul. Carl, they had her
[20:38] covered up until the last moment. That
[20:40] was almost a bailout foul.
[20:45] >> We go back to that stat we just talked
[20:47] about how Two Rivers is perfect this
[20:50] season when they play opponents with a
[20:52] losing record. And that's going to be so
[20:54] important for them because of their
[20:57] ability to take care of business when it
[20:59] matters. Now, you got to win those those
[21:01] big games against the teams with the
[21:02] good records, too, but equally important
[21:04] to not sleep on any opponents.
[21:07] Pier with the steel or I should say
[21:09] rebound.
[21:11] It looked like a steal from here when
[21:13] you get a loose ball ricocheting like
[21:15] that. Pros really shifty.
[21:23] >> So was Caitlyn Okconor who will go to
[21:25] the line for two. You spoke of the
[21:28] relatively brief winning streak Samidi.
[21:31] Let's not forget it took them a while to
[21:33] pick up their first win. They dropped
[21:34] their first five games in a row.
[21:37] That is not the way you want to start a
[21:39] season by losing your first
[21:41] >> your first five games.
[21:44] >> And like Two Rivers, Madameidi had to
[21:47] soldier ahead without one of their top
[21:49] contributors from a year ago, Sarah
[21:50] Popar, transferred to Hill Murray.
[21:54] Caitlyn Okconor blinks at the line.
[21:58] Rebound. Okconor throws it up and puts
[22:01] it in.
[22:02] They still got points out of that
[22:04] possession. They did it the hard way,
[22:06] but it's still good for two. And now
[22:07] they're spreading the rock around.
[22:10] >> But like you were saying, Carl, getting
[22:12] other players involved. We're not saying
[22:15] Reena or Meera or Caitlyn have to put up
[22:17] 20 tonight, but just enough to make the
[22:20] defense a little more honest about
[22:23] approaching Grace Bros.
[22:26] >> Because if you get more players involved
[22:28] in the scoring, then that's going to get
[22:30] Grace even more open.
[22:32] Here's Amenson on the dribble drive.
[22:34] Pulls up. Got it.
[22:37] >> Amenson with a couple of buckets. 159
[22:40] two Rivers over Mameidi.
[22:48] Two Rivers
[22:50] looking for their first win
[22:53] in 10 meetings in this series. Pros had
[22:56] the ball knocked away as Carl pointed
[22:58] out over 2,000 days. 2020 is the last
[23:02] time. I think they were still known as
[23:04] Henry Sibi back then.
[23:06] >> That's how long it's been, Mike.
[23:14] >> 11-11 left in the first half. Live
[23:17] coverage on SEC.
[23:21] Vanett
[23:24] finds a teammate.
[23:27] Scoring on the runner is Tia Scott, the
[23:30] sophomore.
[23:37] Modi. Oh, they had the press broken.
[23:42] Stella Suford with an unforced error.
[23:45] Just bobbled the pass and another easy
[23:47] two points.
[23:48] >> I think calls timeout now.
[23:52] >> 10:46 to go.
[23:55] Carl, I think we're seeing a little more
[23:56] of that polished poise you were talking
[23:58] about with Two Rivers and how they've
[24:00] handled teams under 500. That's starting
[24:03] to show up a little more as we approach
[24:05] the midway point of this first half.
[24:06] >> Now, at one at one point in this and the
[24:10] earlier stage of the first half, it was
[24:11] 10-2 in favor of Two Rivers and ever
[24:15] since the Zephers have been able to step
[24:17] on the gas a little bit more. So, we'll
[24:20] see how this the rest of that plays out
[24:21] in the first half here. The last thing
[24:24] that Madameai wants to see, especially
[24:26] with another game tomorrow against
[24:28] Delano at Wakonia High School, is a is a
[24:32] loss like this tonight. Take a look at
[24:33] the Metro the Metro East Conference here
[24:35] and these two teams bunched up at two
[24:37] and three. Everybody chasing Hill Murray
[24:39] like we were talking about earlier and
[24:41] it's going to be a competitive
[24:42] conference.
[24:44] >> Tartan getting a win over Mamedai.
[24:49] >> Two Rivers will get their second try at
[24:51] Hill Murray next Thursday.
[24:55] again. Landis Williamson Andrews should
[24:57] be back for that one. And two Rivers
[25:00] won't play again until next Tuesday.
[25:04] And to follow up on the schedule, Carl,
[25:06] hold up. Isabelle Vanett
[25:09] snatching another steal.
[25:11] Like we said, two Rivers, they are
[25:13] scrappy defensively.
[25:16] Vanett had that pass nearly go ary.
[25:20] Another O board and a three-point play
[25:23] chance for Katie Divine. I think there
[25:25] were three offensive rebounds in that
[25:27] possession.
[25:35] >> Now, Two Rivers, their next game will be
[25:38] next Tuesday against a not great North
[25:41] St. Paul team. Currently a record of 1
[25:43] and 11.
[25:44] >> Katie Dine completes the three-point
[25:46] play. also plays flag football and at
[25:49] her residence owns a few chickens and
[25:52] ducks.
[25:55] Midi hoping to
[25:58] duck up a few more points. Grace pros
[26:01] can certainly do that. A basket when
[26:03] Mameidi needed it.
[26:04] >> And we don't do chuck a duck at at
[26:07] basketball games. That's more reserved
[26:08] for hockey. But P definitely just
[26:10] chucked up that three.
[26:13] Divine for the answer off the rim.
[26:16] Amidai with the box out.
[26:19] >> And at this point, PL leads all scorers
[26:23] across both teams in this game. She has
[26:24] eight points.
[26:28] The difference is in support. Mameidi
[26:33] only four points outside of Grace Pros
[26:37] as Lucy Pier comes up short trying to go
[26:39] across. Two Rivers getting a little more
[26:42] distribution. Divine tried to thread it
[26:45] to Amenson, but not a lot of space down
[26:48] there. Reena Becker picks up the loose
[26:50] ball.
[26:52] Stopped in her tracks. Three. That's
[26:54] off. That was Stella Seouford.
[27:00] Bros again.
[27:03] Long
[27:05] jump ball
[27:08] making the grab
[27:10] was Stella Seford.
[27:12] We've seen a lot of players hit the
[27:14] hardwood here in the last few minutes.
[27:18] Vanett, the most recent
[27:21] accompanyer of the the Wood.
[27:25] That's not an uncommon sight in girls
[27:28] and women's basketball.
[27:33] Oh, Vanette.
[27:35] >> That would have been And now we're going
[27:37] to get the rebounding foul there going
[27:40] th going against Amenson.
[27:42] That would have been gross if Vanett
[27:46] basically faked the pass into the corner
[27:48] to shake off the defender and hit that
[27:50] three.
[27:50] >> You saw exactly the same thing I did.
[27:52] And then a tough break. That's the
[27:54] second foul on Amenson. And there wasn't
[27:56] a whole lot of contact. I'm not saying
[27:57] it wasn't a foul, but if you're going to
[27:59] pick one up, Carl, that's probably not
[28:01] the best place for one.
[28:02] >> No. Yeah.
[28:04] >> Got to be careful here, especially in
[28:05] the early stages of the game.
[28:10] >> Kick ball. It will stay with Mameidi.
[28:12] 839 left in the first. And now this
[28:15] Mameidi team, they are used to scoring.
[28:17] I mean, on average, they score 49 points
[28:19] per game. And right now, with only a
[28:22] handful of minutes to go, they've only
[28:24] got 12 so far in the first half.
[28:27] Aaron inbound pass. Whoa.
[28:30] Two Rivers open on the other end, but
[28:34] Spangenberg was too strong.
[28:37] You love to see that effort there from
[28:40] Reena Becker.
[28:42] Slid right into the bench. But two
[28:44] Rivers can't convert on the other end.
[28:48] They had a great chance at some points.
[28:50] So Mammina gets a reprieve. Only an
[28:53] eight-point game. Another
[28:57] three or two and lot of eyes back in
[29:00] business. The dribble drive a little
[29:02] short. Mira Nelson didn't look like she
[29:04] was fully set. Dead ball rebound to Two
[29:06] Rivers.
[29:15] >> Two Rivers located in Menota Heights.
[29:23] Three on the way short and there's an
[29:26] over the back foul on Lyanna Wingy.
[29:30] >> Yeah, they'll get Wingy for that one.
[29:33] >> That was pretty clear. I think Carl, you
[29:35] and I, we have the same vantage point.
[29:38] When you reach over and make contact
[29:39] like that,
[29:42] they're going to get you.
[29:47] Two Rivers. They have not reached a
[29:49] state tournament in this century.
[29:51] Mameidi has never been to the big dance.
[29:53] >> They had some years of this close,
[29:55] >> which is curious because Mameidi excels
[29:58] in so many other sports. Like just this
[30:01] year, I was able to call them winning
[30:03] the the class 2A girls state soccer
[30:06] championship. They're regularly in the
[30:09] the hockey state championship or state
[30:12] tournament at least. It is mysterious
[30:14] the lack of basketball success. And they
[30:17] had some seasons where it looked like
[30:19] they would break through. I remember
[30:21] Emma Gro House from several years ago.
[30:23] She was a 6-3 division one
[30:27] caliber player, big post player.
[30:31] Just sometimes you run into that
[30:33] Achilles heel, but you were right on.
[30:36] Soccer back-to-back state championships
[30:38] in 2A.
[30:41] Boys basketball, they've done well.
[30:44] Here's Spankenberg for three.
[30:46] That's short.
[30:48] Becker with the rebound.
[30:53] Loose ball now. Vanette gives it a try.
[30:55] That bounces out. Carl, I feel this is a
[30:58] critical junction in the game. That's a
[31:00] walk. Ava Shepic took a couple of lunges
[31:04] there. But both teams haven't scored in
[31:06] a while, so I feel like whoever can get
[31:08] on a run would have an edge. What about
[31:10] you?
[31:10] >> Especially going into halftime. That
[31:13] positive momentum going into locker
[31:14] room. And oh, what do we see there? It's
[31:17] going to stay with Two Rivers, but a
[31:19] miscommunication there with Vanett.
[31:23] So, this time, Vanett will be the one
[31:24] doing the inbounding.
[31:26] >> Communication always key.
[31:30] >> And Troll broke that up and she's going
[31:32] to get rewarded. Well, looked like she
[31:35] was.
[31:37] And that's at least the second
[31:41] maybe third
[31:43] missed opportunity from Mamedi.
[31:45] >> That was a great effort play by by Grace
[31:47] Pros.
[31:56] >> Grace doing wonders for the Zephers. Two
[31:59] Rivers doing wonders to stay with Becker
[32:01] on the slash. I think Spangenberg will
[32:04] get credit for the block. Here's Amenson
[32:06] one-on-one. She'll shoot two.
[32:18] >> Sophia Amenson, a volleyball and
[32:21] basketball athlete.
[32:25] Her final year of varsity play.
[32:30] Take a look at this replay here
[32:33] and everything that followed. Didn't
[32:36] didn't really see much right there.
[32:41] Amenson 16 points. Solid free throw
[32:45] shooter. 78%.
[32:49] And I jinx her.
[32:51] How dare you?
[32:55] Mani. They'll have a tough game coming
[32:57] up.
[33:00] Bros looking for the tough bucket.
[33:07] Vanett long outlet.
[33:08] >> Absolutely fired
[33:11] >> across the entire court. Now Vanett
[33:14] picking up the pieces. Three on the way.
[33:17] Divine missing. Rebound pros. And now
[33:20] the the gym is making some serious noise
[33:22] now.
[33:25] 2112.
[33:28] Both teams still in a rut. It's been a
[33:31] while since either have put up a field
[33:33] goal. Pros on the give and go. Tries to
[33:36] squeeze underneath. Katy Divine
[33:40] making the play. Zephers with the
[33:43] possession arrow on the tie up. But
[33:46] again, Carl, two Rivers. I think they've
[33:49] locked in on defense. Remember that
[33:50] early timeout 26 seconds into the game
[33:52] after they have blown coverage down low.
[33:55] It didn't result in a layup, but
[34:00] >> Holly got on them and now they're
[34:01] adapting.
[34:02] >> I was worried for a second. It looked
[34:04] like pros went down hard on that last
[34:06] layup and it looks like she was going
[34:08] back down again, but she just had to tie
[34:09] her shoe
[34:11] and I I haven't seen it perfectly so
[34:15] far, but I think there's a lot of
[34:16] players who have not left the floor.
[34:19] >> Two Rivers, they've only played seven.
[34:22] Mameidi. They've tapped into their bench
[34:24] a little more. And Pros drew the foul
[34:28] with Mameidi in the bonus. Grace will
[34:30] get a chance to score some points at the
[34:31] line.
[34:35] And now she can make it a 10-point
[34:38] outing already
[34:40] in the first as we take another look at
[34:42] her getting fouled there.
[34:50] Bros, a perfect four of four from the
[34:52] line so far. 2114.
[34:55] And when you're not hitting your shot,
[34:57] Carl, getting free throws is a good way
[34:58] to keep momentum in your favor.
[35:04] Down to the baseline. And that will work
[35:07] for Katie Divine.
[35:11] >> Two Rivers attempting to press again.
[35:14] >> Divine goes up to seven.
[35:30] Nelson
[35:32] Vanette makes the read. Can she take it
[35:34] all the way? No.
[35:36] Rose was there to disrupt.
[35:39] >> The two top performers in this game thus
[35:42] far right there next to each other.
[35:45] Vameidi once again,
[35:48] Stella Super draws a foul. She'll shoot
[35:50] two. But Carl, I'm noticing Vameidi
[35:53] maybe needs a little more English when
[35:54] they get down low. They've been open on
[35:56] some of those dump downs.
[36:00] >> And now pros will not take a trip to the
[36:04] bench, but she'll get a hydration break
[36:06] there. I I I have got a good feeling
[36:08] she's not going to be on the bench the
[36:10] entire night.
[36:14] Super missing the front end. I've seen
[36:16] that from top players like Addy Mack and
[36:20] Madden Greenway and Tory Orline. One
[36:22] reason they're able to tabulate so many
[36:25] points, assists, and rebounds, but
[36:29] it also comes down to the value they
[36:31] bring.
[36:33] Amenson recovers and scores to convert
[36:36] the high low play. And
[36:37] >> and their conditioning being able to
[36:39] withstand 36 minutes of play like that.
[36:44] >> And now Amenson will shoot two drawing
[36:46] the foul.
[36:48] How about this for balance Carl? Right
[36:50] now for two Rivers Vanette seven points,
[36:52] Divine seven points seven points with a
[36:55] chance to add more at the line.
[37:01] Never a bad idea to spread the rock
[37:02] around and make sure that everybody's
[37:04] ready to score.
[37:06] >> Makes me want to hit up the slot
[37:08] machine.
[37:10] >> These two teams will meet again in 32
[37:13] days on February 17th,
[37:16] of course, at Two Rivers in Menota
[37:18] Heights
[37:21] at night. Take a look at the replay
[37:24] here. Just another hard collision. It
[37:27] feels like we've been watching those for
[37:29] at least the last 15 minutes.
[37:35] >> I know Devine is a flight football
[37:36] player, but maybe everyone else should
[37:39] try out next spring. Nowhere to go for
[37:42] Mameidi.
[37:44] Caitlyn O' Conor pinched in the corner
[37:46] again.
[37:55] Nisha Fisher looking on.
[38:05] Divine was looking for the touch three.
[38:08] Pier closed in and Mameidi prized the
[38:11] ball away. Here's Pier.
[38:14] She stumbles. Two Rivers with the arrow
[38:16] this time.
[38:19] That sense of composure, that's
[38:21] something Lucy Pier as an eighth grader
[38:23] and Nelson as I'm watching Mamemi, this
[38:26] is my second time seeing them this
[38:27] season. I think that's going to be their
[38:29] key, getting that composure, that poise
[38:33] to turn a steal into a big play.
[38:41] Amenson.
[38:44] Another tie up.
[38:47] Now we go the other way.
[38:50] And that is not the first time this half
[38:52] that Amenson has gone to the ground.
[38:59] Dia
[39:02] not afraid to flex her vocals as head
[39:05] coach. Got her start as part of the
[39:07] Durham Hall staff. Mameidi trying
[39:09] to do the give and go again.
[39:15] Foul called on to Rivers.
[39:22] >> And more free throws. No, it's on
[39:24] Mameidi. The way they were motioning, I
[39:26] thought it was on two Rivers, but that
[39:29] makes a little more sense.
[39:32] >> I don't know if that's happened to you,
[39:33] Carl, where the officials signal one way
[39:35] and you think it's the opposite
[39:36] direction.
[39:40] Yeah, it's just the possession arrow is
[39:42] one of those things that has never
[39:43] failed to make me do a discount double
[39:45] check.
[39:46] >> Sorry, I shouldn't say that again before
[39:48] State Farm lawyers up against us. But
[39:52] >> well, they'll need a new pitch man if
[39:54] Aaron Rogers retires. Katie Divine.
[39:56] There's a look at the foul and Dine
[39:59] knocking down the free throws. Two
[40:00] Rivers seven of nine. It'll be
[40:02] interesting if he really is done when
[40:04] they will retire his jersey at Lambo. if
[40:07] it'll be a couple years from now,
[40:09] handful of years down the lane the road
[40:10] or if they'll do it immediately. But
[40:12] nonetheless here, 14 points is the
[40:15] difference in favor of the away team.
[40:19] And I don't think Mamemidi has hit a
[40:21] field goal for the last four or five
[40:24] minutes. Pros trying to slash double
[40:28] dribble. and Pros is doing all she can
[40:31] do out there, but at a certain point,
[40:33] she's running out of teammate gas to
[40:36] fuel her.
[40:38] And that's what's difficult sometimes at
[40:41] this level when you don't have players
[40:43] that can anticipate
[40:45] your moves and your reactions.
[40:50] Here's Divine looking to drive in from
[40:52] the wing. Now she is pinched off.
[40:56] Another jump ball.
[40:58] We've had a lot of those in this first
[41:00] half.
[41:04] >> And Carl, I'm guessing you've seen your
[41:06] share of basketball at the high school
[41:07] and college level when you cover some of
[41:10] the higher level teams. Here's a three
[41:12] from Amenson.
[41:16] Divine was there for the rebound. Vanett
[41:18] fakes
[41:20] looking for help. Amenson after the
[41:23] crosscourt pass moves in and gets the
[41:26] friendly bound. She's up to 11.
[41:29] Well, we're seeing it play out in this
[41:30] game. Two Rivers, they're down one of
[41:32] their top players, but you still have
[41:34] enough in Abinson and Vanett to
[41:36] >> come up with some ingenuity.
[41:39] And that's what the great teams do. I
[41:41] mean, completely different levels, what
[41:43] we saw it at the NBA level the other
[41:44] night. No Anthony Edwards or Rudy Goar
[41:47] for the Timberwolves versus the Bucks.
[41:49] Guess what happened? Julius Randle put
[41:50] on a show and they still won against a
[41:53] full strength Bucks team. Two Rivers
[41:55] putting on a show right now. Loose or
[41:57] Katie Divine scoring in transition.
[42:04] 33-15
[42:11] appears.
[42:15] Three is offline. Pros has been
[42:17] neutralized these last few minutes.
[42:20] Mike, were you aware that there are
[42:23] three different teams in the Western
[42:24] Conference who have better records than
[42:26] every single team in the Eastern
[42:28] Conference other than the Detroit
[42:29] Pistons? It's crazy the differences
[42:33] between the conferences this year. And
[42:35] to follow up on your point about Julius
[42:37] Randall, like you said, the great teams,
[42:41] they have that depth. Well, Oklahoma
[42:43] City comes to mind. They have a high
[42:46] level starting unit. And even if they're
[42:48] missing Jaylen Williams or or even if
[42:51] they're missing Shay, like they're
[42:53] capable of winning these games with
[42:55] their other pieces.
[42:58] A fast break layup and a chance for
[43:00] three. Claire Spangenberg the
[43:02] beneficiary. Lyanna Wingy set her up
[43:06] >> and that brought all the Two Rivers fans
[43:08] to their feet.
[43:11] They're making themselves hurt here on
[43:12] this Friday night.
[43:15] They have completely shut down Grace
[43:17] Bros and Mameidi over the last several
[43:19] minutes.
[43:20] >> The lead is now 20 21.
[43:25] >> Spangenberg on the board. Two Rivers
[43:27] eight of 10. I talked to one of the
[43:30] Monidi parents who thought this could be
[43:33] a tough showing for the Zephers tonight
[43:35] with them playing short-handed.
[43:39] pros
[43:41] the step back.
[43:43] At this point though, I think this is
[43:45] another if you're a coach, you don't
[43:46] hate to see this, even if you're on the
[43:48] losing side, because in this moment,
[43:50] you're going to you're going to find the
[43:52] real characters on your team. And when
[43:55] you're most uncomfortable, when you're
[43:56] getting beat by this this many points,
[43:59] you're going to find out who are the
[44:00] players on your team that are going to
[44:01] keep fighting no matter what the score
[44:03] is. Who's going to be there for their
[44:05] teammate when they're down? Isabelle
[44:08] Vanett steaming after getting called for
[44:10] the foul.
[44:12] That
[44:14] will be her second. And we're in the
[44:17] double bonus.
[44:19] And what you said, Carl, parallels the
[44:22] vibes I got from Anisha Fischer when I
[44:24] spoke to her pregame.
[44:27] >> She told her players, "This is part of
[44:29] the learning process. You're going to
[44:30] figure out a lot about yourselves even
[44:33] if the wins don't come.
[44:38] Still one and one. So an empty
[44:40] possession for Mera Nelson and Mameidi.
[44:47] Mia Holly will have to use a timeout to
[44:50] get Amenson out of a jam. 3615.
[44:54] Two Rivers though completely taking over
[44:56] this game since that eight or nine
[44:59] minute mark.
[45:01] >> Taking over is an understatement at this
[45:04] point. a 21point lead. And now I mean I
[45:09] don't know how much of an asterisk you
[45:10] how big the asterisk is going to be if
[45:13] it's going to be size 12 or if it's
[45:14] going to be size 36 but you do think
[45:17] about all the the absent players in this
[45:20] game. Uh but Two Rivers it looks like
[45:23] barring some minor miracle they are well
[45:25] on their way to closing away that that
[45:28] streak of not beating Mameidi.
[45:31] You mentioned Delano, that's tomorrow.
[45:34] Delano, a sleeper in section 63A. Of
[45:38] course, that's where Benel St.
[45:39] Margaret's and Orno lie. And then Hill
[45:41] Murray after that. So, the Zephers are
[45:43] going to have a couple of huge tests in
[45:46] the next few days. And then they'll wrap
[45:48] up the regular season hosting Hill
[45:51] Murray.
[45:53] 155 left in the first half. 3615 our
[45:56] score.
[45:57] >> Both teams still in the double bonus,
[46:00] >> right? both at nine.
[46:04] I go back to that last two Rivers
[46:06] victory over Mabameidi.
[46:09] This seems
[46:12] strange, but that was a one-point win.
[46:16] Two Rivers looking to do more than one
[46:19] better.
[46:23] Runner is long. Divine trails her own
[46:26] miss.
[46:29] Amenson
[46:31] two defenders. She shrugs it off and
[46:33] scores again.
[46:36] It's now 3815 130 left. We're having a
[46:39] little bit of trouble with the score
[46:40] bug. So we'll keep you up to date on
[46:42] time and score.
[46:47] And I said it a few minutes ago. I mean
[46:49] at this point Mameidi, they've only
[46:51] scored 15 points with a minute to go in
[46:54] the first half. Madame averages 49
[46:56] points a game.
[47:00] The more I think about this game and how
[47:02] it's progressed so far, Carl, as Lanna
[47:05] Wingy will shoot a couple with both
[47:07] teams in the double bonus,
[47:10] >> I think after the first few minutes once
[47:12] Two Rivers got settled in,
[47:15] that's where the momentum, the tempo
[47:17] shifted in their favor. I'm sorry to to
[47:20] interrupt your point here, Mike, but
[47:21] just so you are aware, if this free
[47:23] throw is successful, that will match the
[47:25] average points per game for Two Rivers.
[47:28] And yeah, I did just jinx her even,
[47:31] >> but I think they're going to hit it
[47:33] before the end of the first half. Two
[47:34] Rivers, they averaged 40 points a game.
[47:37] They are one point away from matching
[47:40] that in the first half.
[47:44] >> That is useful math to bring up. I know
[47:46] averages can fluctuate depending on who
[47:48] your opponent is, especially in
[47:49] conference play, but that does paint a
[47:53] picture of how dominant this half has
[47:55] been for the Warriors.
[47:57] Eight on the shot clock. Runner blocked
[47:59] by Amenson. Madame still has it with
[48:01] five on the clock. This is Beer. Does
[48:03] she recognize it? I don't think she
[48:05] does. It's going to be a shot clock
[48:07] violation for Two Rivers. And Nia Holly
[48:10] thrilled at her team's defensive output.
[48:13] It is nothing but a party over there on
[48:16] the red and Vegas gold bench.
[48:20] >> I wonder if we're invited.
[48:23] >> I think that would take away our uh
[48:25] neutrality as broadcasters. You're
[48:27] probably right.
[48:30] But Two Rivers doing some fantastic
[48:31] defense. And that's a double whammy of
[48:34] sorts, Carl. The shot clock violation.
[48:36] Pros hit with a foul, her second. And
[48:38] Two Rivers gets to shoot two more with
[48:39] 36.8 on the clock. I wonder what Nia
[48:42] Holly is going to say in the locker room
[48:44] at halftime. I mean, there's I'm sure
[48:47] there's some things to clean up here,
[48:50] but at this point, there's a lot of
[48:52] celebrating going on. There's some
[48:53] celebrating, but knowing Nia, she will
[48:56] probably emphasize some of the areas of
[48:58] improvement.
[49:00] She is not afraid to speak her mind on a
[49:02] lot of things. And there it is, the 40th
[49:05] point on the night. Currently 40 to 15.
[49:08] 36 seconds to go in the first half.
[49:11] Spangenberg
[49:15] >> knocks down Bold. Her form looks sharp
[49:17] there. Two Rivers 11 to 14. 35 seconds.
[49:20] 4115.
[49:24] Pros
[49:27] to Pier.
[49:29] Can Mameidi get a field goal? Get
[49:32] something.
[49:34] That three is long and two Rivers can
[49:36] put an exclamation point
[49:38] to an overall strong first half. It's
[49:42] Lyles one-on-one blocked by Pier. Now
[49:46] Amenson muscles through gets the Blinko
[49:49] bounce. I can't give her $10,000, but
[49:52] that's two big ones for the Warriors.
[49:54] Pros the heave.
[49:56] >> Not there. 4315.
[49:59] >> That's just about a summary of what this
[50:00] first half was from.
[50:04] Two Rivers
[50:06] scoring the last it seems like 15 points
[50:10] unanswered if not more.
[50:13] >> They have turned this into their own
[50:14] personal playground
[50:17] and look well on their way to ending
[50:19] that lengthy losing streak to Mameidi.
[50:22] Carl and I will be back for first half

[52:32] >> Todd's in the hospital.
[52:34] >> Who's Todd? He got a collapsed lung from
[52:36] vaping. He thought it was cool.
[52:39] >> Not cool.
[52:40] >> Promise you won't vape, Emma. It can

[53:29] >> I never realized that I'd be taking care
[53:32] of a 2-year-old and a 9-year-old on my
[53:34] own. Sometimes as dads, I I think we're
[53:37] too hard on ourselves. We get down on
[53:39] ourselves on not being able to, you
[53:42] know, we're the providers, but we also
[53:44] have to learn to take care of ourselves.
[53:47] Self love made me a better dad because I
[53:50] realized my worth.
[53:53] My daughter Isabella recently had a
[53:56] graduation into high school and it was I
[54:00] got emotional because I saw pride in her
[54:03] eyes. I saw my daughter have have her
[54:05] own selflove and I saw the hard work of
[54:09] of me being that dad 24/7 transfer to my
[54:13] my teenage daughter.
[54:17] The word father means means a lot to me
[54:20] when when I give my love to my children
[54:23] as a father. I can see it
[54:30] there. I was 16, divorced, remarried
[54:33] with the baby, another on the way, and I
[54:36] could barely read or write. Getting my
[54:38] high school diploma was a catalyst I
[54:40] needed. Now I have a bachelor's and
[54:42] masters, and I became a teacher. When I
[54:45] look at all these success stories, I
[54:48] could not help but think it all started

[55:49] 4315 Two Rivers over Mabidai at halftime
[55:52] here in Mabameidai High School girls
[55:54] basketball on SEC
[55:57] and the last eight or nine minutes or so
[56:00] of that half completely controlled by
[56:03] Two Rivers.
[56:06] Sophia Amenson 15 points to lead all
[56:09] players. Katie Divine with 11, Isabelle
[56:11] Vanett with seven. On the Monidai side,
[56:14] Grace Bros with 10, rest of the team
[56:16] with five. Carl, we talked about this as
[56:19] we look at first half highlights.
[56:22] Right now, you're seeing a difference in
[56:23] personnel. Two Rivers even without
[56:26] Landis Williamson Andrews, they still
[56:27] have enough in the tank and enough
[56:29] defensive hustle to assert themselves.
[56:32] Mameidi at times they just look rattled.
[56:34] They look extremely rattled. They look
[56:36] very uncomfortable on offense and on
[56:39] defense. Two Rivers has been able to use
[56:41] their physicality to their advantage and
[56:43] just an absolute show by Isabelle Vanett
[56:46] tonight. And I don't see any sign of it
[56:50] stopping in the second half. Once Two
[56:52] Rivers got past those early jitters
[56:55] again, that was that blown coverage play
[56:57] to start that led to the timeout 26
[57:00] seconds in. Over time, they just got
[57:02] stronger. And we've seen Amenson flex
[57:04] her muscle down low. A couple of threes
[57:07] from the affforementioned Isabelle
[57:08] Vanett.
[57:11] There's one of them. And Katie Divine
[57:17] chipping in a few points as the half
[57:19] progressed. There's one of the rare
[57:21] field goals. But this is mostly a Two
[57:24] Rivers show. And for any of you who will
[57:26] watch this on Town Square TV down in
[57:29] Dakota County, you're probably loving
[57:31] this.
[57:34] But as we said at the start, Mamemidai
[57:36] down a couple of players,
[57:40] one to concussion protocol, one to
[57:42] illness.
[57:44] And when you take out two top scorers
[57:47] like that and the rest of your unit just
[57:50] doesn't have the experience,
[57:53] it can lead to matchups like that. As we
[57:55] get through the first half highlights,
[57:57] again, a lot on the Two River side.
[57:58] Mamedi will try to add a few more on
[58:00] their side. Second half will start in
[58:02] just 2 minutes right here on SEC Sports.
[58:25] Some people judge a book by its cover.
[58:28] And if you're not what people are
[58:30] looking for, you're kind of like a
[58:32] reject.
[58:37] At school, it feels like everyone's
[58:39] staring at me and I'm just kind of not
[58:41] really a person.
[58:44] >> Sometimes I can't believe that you could
[58:46] be proud of me if I'm not proud of
[58:48] myself.
[58:50] >> It just was hard today.
[58:53] Nobody was listening to me.
[58:55] >> Think of our best times together.
[58:58] Let's do more of that.

[59:32] can lead today's youth to a lifelong

[59:45] >> Got a few minutes?
[59:46] >> You are. Start the conversation with
[59:48] your child about vaping today.
[60:01] Mike Been and Carl Warner back with you
[60:03] for the second half live on SEC Sports.
[60:07] Middle of January, MLK weekend upon us.
[60:11] Here's a quick look at the halftime
[60:12] stats.
[60:15] The three-pointers
[60:18] haven't gone down all that much for
[60:19] either side. Isabelle Vanett has the
[60:21] only two for Two Rivers. Mamedi's Grace
[60:24] Pros the only two
[60:27] three-pointers converted.
[60:31] And that score I don't think tells the
[60:33] whole story when you think about the
[60:34] turnovers and it's hard to keep up
[60:36] without a statistician. But the
[60:37] turnovers and the field goal shooting
[60:39] playing a big part as well. And again,
[60:42] Madameai had that lengthy scoring
[60:44] drought to end the first half.
[60:45] >> Yeah, they did. And lengthy is an
[60:47] understatement. They've been stuck at 15
[60:50] for a long time.
[60:53] >> It is also mental health awareness night
[60:56] at Mamemidi. There is a display as you
[60:59] enter the gym highlighting mental
[61:02] health. I know that's been a subject a
[61:03] lot of athletes have discussed more
[61:06] frequently in recent years. Foul drawn
[61:08] by two Rivers
[61:11] and Wingy
[61:13] after they collect the rebound. 1748
[61:16] left in the second half
[61:23] >> and we've got our score bug back online.
[61:28] We gave it a talking to at halftime.
[61:31] >> Isabelle Vanett on the drive. Strong.
[61:33] Grace pros there for the rebound.
[61:37] >> As you said, Carl, she is Oh,
[61:41] another tackle.
[61:44] >> But Pros doing whatever she can. It's
[61:47] just tough when you don't have someone
[61:48] who can help you out, give you a spell.
[61:51] And Raina Becker that time
[61:54] hitting the hitting the hardwood as
[61:58] Grace Pros tries her hardest. And
[62:01] finally a sign of life for Mameidi.
[62:05] That's Caitlyn O' Conor.
[62:10] A foul on pros
[62:14] and head coach Anisha Fischer not too
[62:17] happy about that one.
[62:19] I stand corrected on the last score.
[62:21] That was McKenna Fucal.
[62:28] >> Pros with their third foul. That's the
[62:31] last player you want to see in foul
[62:32] trouble given Mabameidi's
[62:34] roster situation.
[62:40] >> You do love to see your star player
[62:42] playing their heart out despite the
[62:44] obvious handicap tonight.
[62:48] Katie Divine
[62:50] with the hook shot. She's up to 13. And
[62:54] at this point, Almondson's up to 15.
[63:00] Tie up. And two Rivers with the arrow.
[63:04] Again, the Warriors without Landis
[63:06] Williamson Andrews still getting quite a
[63:08] bit of production, but it goes back to
[63:10] an extension of this season. They didn't
[63:12] have an Ira Gorman to look upon, but
[63:16] they have enough pieces elsewhere to
[63:18] make it work.
[63:20] Where they've struggled are matchups
[63:22] against the higher level opponents, Hill
[63:24] Murray, Providence Academy.
[63:26] Although Providence Academy has
[63:29] steamrolled a lot of opponents this
[63:31] year.
[63:38] 4517. We have a foul
[63:41] on
[63:43] Two Rivers.
[63:46] It's on Amenson, her third. And while
[63:49] Two Rivers isn't in any danger, Amenson
[63:52] is one of the catalysts. You want to
[63:54] make sure she doesn't get in foul
[63:55] trouble. And I tell you what, if I was
[63:59] scheduling, if I if I played for a
[64:01] Minnesota State High School League girls
[64:03] basketball team, those are the two
[64:04] deadliest words I would never want to
[64:06] hear right now. Providence Academy.
[64:08] That would not be a fun game to play for
[64:11] the opposing team.
[64:13] >> The only instate team to beat them this
[64:15] season is Hopkins and that was in the
[64:17] season opener.
[64:20] Reena Becker
[64:22] to Pros
[64:24] guarded by Vanett. Pros
[64:28] barreling her way in. Carl Grace,
[64:32] she is determined as the ball rolls over
[64:35] to us. Just determined to make anything
[64:37] work,
[64:38] >> which is extremely admirable, especially
[64:41] I mean there's no there's no ifs, ands,
[64:43] or buts about it. They're down by 28.
[64:45] So, at this point in the game, to have
[64:47] your star player be showing this much
[64:48] effort is something that Monidi really
[64:50] has to love to see.
[64:53] Reflecting on what you said late in the
[64:55] first half in a situation like this as
[64:57] we get another look at the foul.
[65:02] >> You mentioned the learning experience,
[65:04] the perks that come with it, even if the
[65:08] score doesn't reflect it. I say this all
[65:09] the time, Carl, you never know who's
[65:11] watching. College scouts in particular.
[65:14] >> Yeah. You never you never know who's
[65:16] watching.
[65:18] And that is such a that's a big reason
[65:20] why integrity is such a a cornerstone of
[65:24] almost every single youth association
[65:27] and team is understanding from a young
[65:30] age that integrity matters a lot.
[65:33] >> Vanette to the line shooting 66%
[65:36] this season. And for the
[65:40] for our viewers at home, we just want to
[65:42] remind you that the I I don't know if
[65:44] it's necessarily called the mercy rule
[65:46] or just the the time rule, uh, but you'd
[65:48] be looking for 35 points of a lead in
[65:51] the last 9 minutes of the of the second
[65:55] half here. So, in a lot of other
[65:57] Minnesota State High School League
[65:58] sports, the Mercy rule only kicks in in
[66:00] the fourth quarter. But if you really
[66:02] think about it, the last nine minutes of
[66:03] the second half is really the fourth
[66:05] quarter of the basketball game. And
[66:06] mercy roll is the term. Hockey, it's the
[66:09] third period. Lacrosse, it's the fourth
[66:11] quarter. I think for boys, girls, it's
[66:14] running time anyway.
[66:17] >> So, at this point, it's a 28-point lead.
[66:19] And Two Rivers looking for a timeout.
[66:21] They won't be rewarded. And now they
[66:22] will be.
[66:27] It looks like uh it looks like Isabelle
[66:30] Vanett called the timeout
[66:35] >> and it was granted. It's almost
[66:39] akin to football games when a coach
[66:42] calls a timeout right before a field
[66:44] goal attempt.
[66:50] There's the foul on Claire Spangenberg.
[66:53] 4719 exactly 16 minutes to go in the
[66:57] second. You mentioned scheduling.
[67:00] Looking at Two Rivers, the teams they
[67:01] lost to Wakonia, they could be a sleeper
[67:04] in section 24A. They've been up there
[67:08] hovering around the top 10 all season.
[67:09] Here's a look at their upcoming
[67:10] schedule. North St. Paul on Tuesday.
[67:14] That one should be winnable. Hill
[67:15] Murray.
[67:17] They have been the closest team
[67:21] against Hill Murray in terms of margin.
[67:23] And Nia excited. She's hoping to notch a
[67:26] win there. Richfield,
[67:31] they've got some work to do, but they
[67:32] could be a sleeper in section 6 3A.
[67:36] And then they will take on Delano
[67:37] February 19th. Rogue game at Delano. So,
[67:41] Two Rivers not afraid to face some high
[67:44] level opponents. They played Minihaha
[67:46] Academy. Now Minihaha's without CA Hill,
[67:49] but the Red Hawks still able to get the
[67:51] win there.
[67:53] But a lot of
[67:55] strong teams and St. Corey Lutheran not
[67:57] ranked, but they have two highc caliber
[68:00] athletes there. Bounce pass
[68:03] and the flip for Miran Nelson, the
[68:05] seventh grader. 4721.
[68:12] Wingy
[68:13] the dish to Amenson.
[68:16] The scoop and the score. Amenson with
[68:18] 17.
[68:30] Pier the skip.
[68:33] This is Nelson. Backto back buckets.
[68:41] Nelson, the seventh grader.
[68:44] That can help your confidence. Here's a
[68:46] three for the Warriors. Splash.
[68:50] Katie Divine. Made it look pretty.
[68:54] And she's got a pretty solid 16 points
[68:57] to her name.
[69:00] >> 29point lead for Mameidi.
[69:03] Under 15 minutes to play.
[69:05] >> Bros used up the dribble in a heap of
[69:07] trouble. Traveling call.
[69:12] some good sportsmanship being shown on
[69:14] both sides. You always love to always
[69:16] love to see that.
[69:18] >> That's one of the interesting
[69:21] mental facets. Sometimes I'll see
[69:24] players wait for a teammate to help them
[69:25] up. Others
[69:28] will graciously accept the hand offered
[69:30] by an opponent.
[69:43] Amenson looking for the dribble drive.
[69:45] Didn't see a lane. Pulls up from the
[69:46] elbow. Reena Becker collecting the
[69:49] rebound.
[69:53] Becker bounce pass over to Stella
[69:56] Seouford.
[69:58] Here Nelson the lob inside to Seford and
[70:02] a wedgie.
[70:05] Is anyone going to jump up to get it or
[70:07] are we going to
[70:08] >> I think the officials might have to go
[70:10] get it.
[70:13] >> We going to get a broom here.
[70:15] >> Or another ball.
[70:18] >> Most of the time when I cover girls and
[70:20] women's basketball, they don't have the
[70:22] vertical.
[70:23] >> Oh, here comes another ball.
[70:24] >> Yep. They don't have the vertical that
[70:28] the boys and men's players do.
[70:30] >> It's not a knock. It's just one of those
[70:33] >> mechanical things. And the official
[70:35] >> It's more wedgie in there.
[70:39] >> That's three wedgies. Four. This could
[70:42] be an alltime wedgie record.
[70:44] >> Someone get a ladder.
[70:46] Where's the ladder at? Oh, finally.
[70:48] >> After four tries. Well, we've got a
[70:50] ladder. Goodness. If that was stuck, I
[70:52] know the truck has a ladder. We had to
[70:54] use it to mic up the backboard. So, I'm
[70:56] pretty sure Clayton and Joe and the crew
[70:58] would be more than happy to bring out
[70:59] the ladder to fetch the ball. Actually,
[71:01] it's right.
[71:02] >> I feel bad. Our our friendly green
[71:04] ladder was here the whole time.
[71:06] >> Oh, man. Okay. Wow. That's going on the
[71:09] demo reel.
[71:13] >> Well, I definitely heard a rose. Such a
[71:14] clatter.
[71:21] And Two Rivers draws the foul on the
[71:23] other end. Obviously, when there is a
[71:25] wedged ball, it's treated as a jump
[71:27] ball, in case you didn't know.
[71:31] So, Two Rivers had the arrow and Amenson
[71:32] will get shoot a couple.
[71:37] I had to joke with one of my camera
[71:39] operators at Farmington the other night
[71:40] when I told him, well, we had a wedgie
[71:42] in the game, and I he couldn't believe
[71:44] me when I told him that it was the first
[71:45] wedgie of my entire play-by-play career.
[71:49] >> I'm guessing it won't be the last. Well,
[71:51] we know it isn't the last. We just had
[71:52] one. Mhm.
[71:56] >> Amenson splits at the line. 53-23 as we
[72:00] approach 14 minutes to go.
[72:08] Nelson to the line.
[72:11] Carl, that is not the craziest side I've
[72:13] seen with the cylinder. Several years
[72:15] ago, I did a game Holy Angels and Becker
[72:17] when the two were at the top of the pack
[72:20] in class 3A. Grace Masakoy got an
[72:23] offensive rebound, went back up and had
[72:26] the ball rest perfectly on the back of
[72:28] the cylinder.
[72:32] >> It'll happen, especially if it's
[72:34] spinning at that right angle and the
[72:36] right speed.
[72:38] >> There's the foul that Nelson drew.
[72:41] Another time at St. Cloud Tech when NSPM
[72:44] was involved with the breakdown
[72:46] coverage. I was there for Granite City.
[72:48] Offensive rebound. nothing doing for the
[72:50] Zephers. And
[72:53] >> the ball was
[72:54] >> They're going to get a foul call.
[72:55] >> Yes. And the ball was wedged
[72:59] >> in between the top of the backboard and
[73:01] the shot clock. They ended up having to
[73:02] get another ball.
[73:06] Memories of the most unique places that
[73:09] can get stuck.
[73:22] How many jump balls have we witnessed in
[73:25] this matchup? More than what I'm
[73:28] accustomed to.
[73:32] More substitutions with 1341 left. Two
[73:35] Rivers up by 30
[73:44] as they seemingly have this game
[73:47] locked up again.
[73:50] Two Rivers
[73:52] had not defeated Mameidi since February
[73:54] of 2020. I think that streak will end in
[73:58] a short while. Grace pros her three goes
[74:01] out. Rebound Ly Wingy I should say.
[74:08] Divine
[74:09] bumped on the way up. Back to the line
[74:12] she goes.
[74:22] >> And remember, Two Rivers is doing this
[74:24] without one of their top scorers in
[74:26] Landis Williamson Andrews. As we stated
[74:28] in the open, Mameidi without two of
[74:30] their top players as well, but
[74:34] It says something when you can get
[74:36] production
[74:38] from some
[74:40] unsung heroes like Katie Divine who has
[74:43] a new season high we should add her
[74:45] previous mark was 13.
[74:50] It's always great to see a
[74:53] at this point, I mean, when you have a
[74:54] blowout at the halftime, you got to go
[74:56] into the halftime thinking, what are the
[74:58] what are the milestones maybe that we
[75:00] could see in the second half? And even
[75:02] if you don't get them, seeing a
[75:04] performance like this out of Devon as
[75:05] Grace Bros,
[75:08] takes it all the way in on the coast to
[75:11] coast play 53-25.
[75:14] When you get that kind of production out
[75:16] of someone like Divine, she averages
[75:18] just about eight. Here she is on the
[75:20] three. Oh yes,
[75:23] on Q.
[75:25] But that's what can help a team that is
[75:27] short-handed. What do they say? Next
[75:30] man, woman up.
[75:36] >> Katie Divine rocking the gym with that
[75:38] three. Pros.
[75:41] Count it.
[75:44] >> Graceful. She's showing off some flare.
[75:47] I mean, it'd be a little bit prettier if
[75:49] they weren't down by 29, but
[75:51] nonetheless,
[75:54] >> a graceful take to the rim, if I say so
[75:57] myself.
[76:01] Saw the replay. Just squeezed through
[76:02] that double and she finishes her
[76:05] three-point play
[76:08] down to a 28-point lead. And now
[76:11] Pros has 17 on the night.
[76:19] And players like pros, it's hard to stop
[76:22] them completely. Here's Divine on the
[76:24] take. And she'll shoot two more. Bameidi
[76:28] already in the penalty.
[76:32] We can see a lot more free throws.
[76:34] Unofficially on my score sheet. I've got
[76:37] Mamedi 8 of 14. Two Rivers 14 of 20.
[76:40] >> So Dine has a chance for her first
[76:42] 20point game of the season.
[76:47] There it is.
[76:52] >> Great moment for her. Now, let's see if
[76:54] she can add on to it.
[76:56] >> And that's something two Rivers can take
[76:58] with them in their upcoming games.
[77:01] Landis Williamson Andrews told me during
[77:04] warm-ups she is expected to return next
[77:06] week.
[77:08] The crutches are just a precaution and
[77:10] bone bruise is not something to be
[77:11] messed with. Divine with 21. and she's
[77:14] currently the leading scoreer. I'm not
[77:16] sure if that's happened before for Two
[77:17] Rivers.
[77:21] Long shot bounces off the back iron. The
[77:24] seventh grader Mera Nelson. Well, she's
[77:27] got six points this half.
[77:31] And for a youngster like Meera, that
[77:34] could be one of those building blocks of
[77:36] confidence.
[77:40] Scott to Spangenberg.
[77:43] Vanette the dump down to a cutting
[77:46] spangenberg.
[77:52] Now timeout for Mameidi.
[77:55] 6030 Mameidi
[78:00] and getting some momentum but two Rivers
[78:02] ready for an answer.
[78:10] >> Yeah, they're looking for the answer.
[78:13] And I mean honestly this half it feels
[78:15] like it has really slowed down and just
[78:17] been a back and forth half and not it's
[78:20] just it hasn't been two rivers all the
[78:22] way.
[78:25] And we'll talk about Amenson here and
[78:28] the game that she has had tonight. 18
[78:31] points so far and you see all the things
[78:34] she's done to just dominate on the
[78:36] hardwood.
[78:39] getting it done. Rebounding, using her
[78:41] power or height advantage,
[78:47] just the ability to move through
[78:48] defenders.
[78:57] She'll check back in after riding the
[79:00] bench for a little bit.
[79:05] Amenson maybe not the most recognized
[79:08] post player in Minnesota girls
[79:11] basketball but certainly influential in
[79:15] this one and Katie Devine 21 points
[79:21] couple of threes this half
[79:24] this could be the kind of game
[79:27] that spotlights another option 42 Rivers
[79:31] as we've got another battle for the
[79:32] rebound down
[79:34] and another jump ball. 1112 left in the
[79:38] second half.
[79:39] >> And Shepik was all over that play from
[79:41] Adamedi.
[79:45] Two Rivers doubling up on the Zephers.
[79:52] But a performance like Divine, yes, it's
[79:55] coming against a short-handed Manidai
[79:56] team, but when they get Landis
[79:59] Williamson Andrews back, well, now Nia
[80:01] Holly and her crew, that gives them
[80:04] another option. I'm sure they're going
[80:05] to take notes and
[80:08] let Katie know you can step up, too.
[80:14] >> Under 11 minutes to play in the second
[80:18] half of action.
[80:21] Amenson was calling for it on the
[80:23] inbound. Now Spangenberg looking for
[80:25] Amenson. She's covered. Although there
[80:28] is a mismatch in height, but Spangenberg
[80:30] says, "I've got this."
[80:37] And that dance party over at Two Rivers
[80:42] getting more lively by the bucket.
[80:44] >> They're going to have a disco ball by
[80:45] the end of this game.
[80:48] >> Disco ball, roller skates.
[80:51] That was a big thing I think in the
[80:53] 1970s and 80s. Spankenberg completes the
[80:56] three-point play.
[80:59] >> Here's Pros dribble drive short this
[81:02] time and the rebound. Carums over to
[81:06] Divine Amenson left.
[81:07] >> Guess who?
[81:09] >> And Amenson up to 20.
[81:10] >> And now you got that 35point lead. And
[81:14] if it stays there for another 90
[81:16] seconds, we'll have the running clock.
[81:21] will have a foul on Two Rivers. That's
[81:23] their last to give, but
[81:27] >> inconsequential
[81:29] given the circumstances
[81:37] >> and for someone like Grace Pros, Carl, I
[81:40] mentioned this a lot. I saw this last
[81:42] Saturday as Pros is fouled. will shoot
[81:45] two
[81:46] with Rochester Lord and Providence
[81:49] Academy.
[81:52] You had a good game from the likes of
[81:53] Lauren Huster. Even last year, Kil
[81:55] Murray and Providence when Maya Wilson
[81:56] had 34, but Providence won a runaway
[81:59] pros. Another example
[82:04] where I would say
[82:06] it's akin to spending 95 cents after the
[82:10] contestant in front of you spends a
[82:12] dollar on the big wheel. if you know
[82:14] where I'm going with this.
[82:19] >> Yeah, it is
[82:21] an interesting situation as we watch the
[82:25] rest of this game play out.
[82:30] Rose with 19 of Mameidi's 32 points.
[82:36] Step back three drifts left.
[82:40] Everyone takes a spill again.
[82:44] We have seen bodies hit the floor all
[82:46] night.
[82:49] >> Substitution coming in that will be
[82:51] Tegan Lyles for Two Rivers.
[82:55] >> She'll spell Amenson.
[83:06] >> Nia giving Sophia some instruction.
[83:12] Pros
[83:14] fakes the drive. The three looked good.
[83:17] Just didn't go in.
[83:22] >> Holding the arrow this time.
[83:43] Spangenberg got in there for the
[83:45] rejection.
[83:47] Another jump ball.
[83:54] Whether we get to Mercy World or not,
[83:56] Carl, I think this game is setting a
[83:57] record for most jump balls called at
[83:58] least this season.
[84:02] >> Kick to the corner. Spankenberg's three.
[84:05] Missed everything. Dead ball rebound to
[84:07] Mameidi.
[84:10] Yeah, quite a bit of air on that last
[84:12] three.
[84:17] >> And at this point, Two Rivers is making
[84:20] no mistake about it. They are going to
[84:22] break this generational
[84:25] curse.
[84:29] They came close last year. Pros
[84:34] looking for the three. comes up with air
[84:37] instead.
[84:40] >> I mean, I think it at this point it is
[84:42] fair to say there are children that are
[84:44] about to that are about to enter first
[84:46] grade who have never lived to see Two
[84:49] Rivers beating Mameidi in girls
[84:51] basketball until tonight.
[84:59] The illegal screen as Grace Pros hits
[85:02] the deck again. Again, we are not at the
[85:05] Mercy World threshold. It's 35 or more.
[85:08] So, we're still in stoppage time with
[85:09] 859 on the clock.
[85:10] >> Seems like it seems like a very specific
[85:12] amount of points. I feel like that would
[85:14] be on like a whole number of some sort.
[85:15] Like 30 or they came up with 35.
[85:19] >> 35 just feels like they couldn't decide
[85:21] between 30 and 40. And they were like,
[85:23] you know what, guys? Why don't we just
[85:25] let's call it a day. It It's like they
[85:27] were arguing for eight hours straight
[85:29] and then they finally had to come to a
[85:31] to a compromise. I would love it if that
[85:34] was the story.
[85:37] Pros kicks out three from the wing.
[85:42] A Shepik misfires.
[85:45] Here comes Divine.
[85:47] Bounced it off a Mameidi. Players foot.
[85:54] So it will be a side out for the
[85:57] Warriors.
[85:59] Here's
[86:01] Amenson. Got the mismatch again.
[86:06] Mameidi will let it go for a dead ball
[86:08] rebound.
[86:10] >> Carl, I wanted to touch on what you said
[86:12] when it comes to these lengthy one-sided
[86:14] rivalries. I don't know how much
[86:16] emphasis there is at the high school
[86:18] level compared to college when you get
[86:21] to Big 10 or SEC play or in the pros
[86:25] with your divisional opponents,
[86:26] especially in the NFL. But
[86:27] psychologically,
[86:29] even if the circumstances favor Two
[86:31] Rivers tonight, what do you think ending
[86:34] that win streak can do? You
[86:37] >> I mean, I'll be
[86:37] >> check off another item on that list.
[86:39] >> I'll be honest with you, Mike, there's
[86:41] probably a good chance that a handful of
[86:42] players on Two Rivers have no idea that
[86:44] this streak even exists. I mean,
[86:46] however, when when Nia Holly is able to
[86:50] tell that to her players in the locker
[86:51] room a handful of minutes from now, I
[86:53] think it's going to get a pretty big
[86:54] pop.
[86:57] It's just something morale-wise to think
[86:59] about and even if you don't have a state
[87:02] championship season, a section season,
[87:04] it's one of those things where it is a
[87:06] small victory
[87:09] and Nia certainly has perspective on
[87:11] that. She played at Hopkins in the late
[87:13] conference. Of course, the conference
[87:15] looked a lot different
[87:18] when she was there.
[87:20] They've batted St. Michael Aberville,
[87:22] Maple Grove, and Buffalo in recent
[87:25] years. But
[87:28] when you can get past one of those
[87:29] teams, you just couldn't seem to beat.
[87:33] And I will be curious to see what a
[87:35] rematch will be like when these two can
[87:37] meet presumably at full strength. Leva
[87:40] Shep, she's signed up for 36.
[87:43] Pros
[87:45] can in the corner.
[87:48] And now just like that,
[87:51] it's Van Net
[87:54] who got the outlet pass. And now
[87:55] Madameai is going to get it right back.
[88:00] 729
[88:01] still stuck on 33. So still no mercy
[88:04] rule.
[88:08] By the way, Kalia Benz entering the game
[88:11] for Two Rivers for the first time. She
[88:13] plays a lot of JV as well, the senior.
[88:20] I think the rivalries
[88:24] get a little more elevation
[88:27] as Pros misses the jumper.
[88:30] When you get to a high octane rivalry as
[88:34] Bins scores the layup and not only will
[88:37] that get the 67, that will get the mercy
[88:39] roll.
[88:40] >> Yeah, there's the 67 celebration. Good
[88:42] eye, Carl.
[88:45] I know that was all the rage early in
[88:47] the basketball season. Broadcasters were
[88:50] joking among themselves. I'm in a couple
[88:52] of Facebook groups saying, "Beware of
[88:54] 67."
[88:57] >> Grace Pro will shoot, too. Personally,
[88:59] Carl, I'm
[89:01] don't mind it. I'm just disappointed
[89:02] that 67 doesn't really have any meaning
[89:05] behind it. It just got thrown into a
[89:06] song lyric and people ran with it. It
[89:08] does have meaning, but the problem is
[89:09] that 99% of the of the people who are
[89:12] using it have no idea what the meaning
[89:14] is.
[89:15] >> Well, I looked it up and on Google or
[89:19] Urban Dictionary anyway, it said there
[89:21] was no real meaning behind it.
[89:23] >> Well, I feel like there is a more like
[89:26] dark explanation of it that I don't
[89:28] think is suitable for our uh overthe-air
[89:31] network. Um, but I feel I feel like a
[89:34] Oh, an urban dictionary is a scary place
[89:36] to be as well. So, uh, brave of you
[89:39] going there. But, uh, yeah. So, we're
[89:42] looking at a
[89:44] now we're only separated by by 34 points
[89:48] now, but the running clock continues. It
[89:50] would stop if Mamedai got within 30.
[89:55] And I know this because that has
[89:57] happened to me in a couple of games I've
[89:58] called. That's just another I I need a
[90:02] documentary about what it was like when
[90:04] they made this mercy rule because it's
[90:07] just like where where were they? What
[90:11] was the initial topic of conversation?
[90:14] I'm just flabbergasted.
[90:16] Three-pointer from Vanette was blocked.
[90:18] She recovers. Here's Bins again and lays
[90:21] it in.
[90:22] Well, no 6-7 this time because we're at
[90:26] 69-34,
[90:29] which coincidentally 69 was the number
[90:31] of points Providence Academy scored on
[90:32] Rochester Lord in the first half.
[90:36] In fact, the score right now was nearly
[90:39] identical to that first half score.
[90:41] >> Wait, Providence Academy gave up 34
[90:44] points to Rochester Lord.
[90:45] >> Yes, but they had 69. Sometimes
[90:48] >> I don't know. Sometimes a great offense
[90:51] can be a good defense.
[90:59] >> So, we'll be out of here in about 5
[91:00] minutes. Free throws for Ruby
[91:03] Stembridge. I'll get this in because she
[91:05] was listed in the breakdown book. And
[91:06] >> I cannot wait to hear this fun fact.
[91:08] >> Yes. And I'm trying to cover for time.
[91:11] Can you tell?
[91:13] She is super musical. She has played the
[91:15] piano and guitar for 13 years. Oh
[91:18] goodness.
[91:18] >> And she's also a soccer, track, and
[91:21] field athlete. So, she picked up a state
[91:22] championship
[91:25] back in the fall and also involved in
[91:27] Spanish club, youth, and government, and
[91:28] NHS. In other words, what did I do with
[91:31] my life? I was nowhere near as
[91:33] accomplished as Ruby was
[91:36] when I was in school. I teach. It's
[91:38] always great to see these student
[91:40] athletes being involved in more than one
[91:42] sport or activity.
[91:45] Being on the road to being a much more
[91:47] well-rounded individual under four
[91:50] minutes to play as Madameidi tries to
[91:53] find some value here. Nearly stolen away
[91:55] by Vanet. We've got the backups out
[91:58] there for the most part. And I say this
[92:00] all the time, Carl. There's more to this
[92:02] than records and stats.
[92:05] >> Players
[92:08] on the floor now. I'm sure they live and
[92:12] die with each loss, but Nia Holly and
[92:14] Anisha Fischer, they were in that
[92:16] position once.
[92:19] Bins will sub out. Amen will go in and
[92:23] Bins will get a celebratory reception on
[92:26] the bench with 320 left.
[92:35] By the way, I like that documentary idea
[92:37] of yours. I don't know how involved you
[92:39] are with NPN. That's one of the stations
[92:41] Carl and I do some games for, but we do
[92:43] have that weekly show. Maybe you should
[92:44] pitch it to our creative team. Or I can
[92:48] pitch it on your behalf.
[92:50] >> I'd be more than fine with that.
[92:51] >> Well, you've seen channels like Secret
[92:53] Base and the other sports channels that
[92:55] do these deep dives and obscure rules or
[92:58] moments in history. I feel like you have
[93:00] a gold mine right there.
[93:02] >> I'm I'm sorry. One of the Two Rivers
[93:04] defenders just got nutmeged and that
[93:06] brought the Mameidi bench to their feet
[93:08] even though nothing came of it.
[93:09] >> So Sophia Amenson will crack a few nuts
[93:13] of her own.
[93:14] >> But yes, that's the the conversation
[93:15] about these these obscure rules and I'm
[93:19] sure this this Mercy rule in basketball
[93:21] is only scratching the surface of these
[93:24] obscure rules as Vanett
[93:27] is going to have a solo run
[93:30] on for Vanett.
[93:35] And what I want to know, was that a
[93:37] Minnesota rule or an NFHS rule? Because
[93:40] there are some distinctions.
[93:42] >> There is a soccer substitution rule that
[93:44] came into play a few years ago that was
[93:47] put in place by the NFHS,
[93:50] for example.
[93:53] But I'm doing this story on Miss
[93:55] Basketball Winners of this documentary
[93:57] series. Clearly, I
[93:59] did not understand the assignment as
[94:02] Amenson understands what to do after a
[94:04] missed free throw. A four-point play for
[94:06] the Warriors. A little icing on their
[94:09] cake.
[94:12] >> I don't know if they're done icing.
[94:13] Watch out for this. They want to sweeten
[94:15] up the score if they can. They do catch
[94:17] up to the loose ball. How about a three?
[94:22] Well, I guess Two Rivers is human after
[94:24] all.
[94:26] and specifically Amanson is human after
[94:29] all, but she's been anything other than
[94:31] human tonight. She's got 24.
[94:35] And you can tell Carl and I are taking
[94:37] this a little more loosely than the
[94:39] first half, but really the turning point
[94:40] I think came at the midway point of the
[94:42] first half when Two Rivers went on that
[94:44] lengthy run. Mameidi unable to score
[94:48] >> and that was the story.
[94:58] Going to the line I think. Just making
[95:01] sure I have the number right. That's
[95:02] Hadley Johnson, number 20. So, she'll
[95:04] get on the board. And Grace Pros, she
[95:07] did what she could. She'll finish with
[95:09] 21. Just not enough support. And again,
[95:11] Mamemidi missing a couple of key pieces
[95:14] tonight. and Two Rivers
[95:16] learning a few things about themselves,
[95:18] Carl, that may not be apparent in a
[95:20] runaway win like this, but for someone
[95:22] like Divine, who has 21 her season high,
[95:24] first 20point game of the year, that can
[95:27] project a lot of confidence going into
[95:28] some of those bigger matchups that start
[95:30] next week.
[95:31] >> It absolutely can. Now, 12 seconds to
[95:34] go, we cap things off on what has been
[95:37] an interesting night for both sides.
[95:39] >> Can Vanett add one more to the pile?
[95:42] Yes. And that will sweeten up Two Rivers
[95:46] and their pot to 77.
[95:49] Vanette will finish with a baker's
[95:51] dozen. And Two Rivers crafting a winning
[95:54] recipe 7737.
[95:57] Their first win over Mameidi in nearly
[96:01] six years.
[96:09] What a relief off of the back of
[96:13] everybody in Menota Heights. That is a I
[96:16] mean, you don't see many streaks like
[96:17] that where it is it is entire
[96:20] generations and like something that
[96:22] lasted before the pandemic, but great
[96:25] win tonight for Two Rivers, even if it
[96:27] was from a handicapped varsity squad on
[96:30] Monidai. Hey, a win is a win. I don't
[96:33] think Gopher's fans were complaining the
[96:35] first time they knocked off the Badgers
[96:36] in football for the first time in 15
[96:38] years. You'll take them where you can
[96:40] get them as we look at the highlights
[96:41] one more time.
[96:43] >> Carl, sometimes the score tells the
[96:45] story itself.
[96:46] >> And honestly, tonight a lot of it was
[96:49] centered around Amenson for for Two
[96:52] Rivers as we continue to see the
[96:54] highlights here. And from the very
[96:56] beginning, Two Rivers just had a third
[96:59] and fourth gear and a fifth gear, too,
[97:02] that Mameidi just did not possess
[97:06] anymore. And I think we would have seen
[97:08] a ludicrous speed gear.
[97:11] Older fans will pick up on that
[97:13] reference, but
[97:15] it was a sensational effort after Two
[97:18] Rivers overcame their early jitters.
[97:20] Robinson will finish with 24 the game
[97:22] high. Katie Divine season high 21. Her
[97:24] first 20point game of the year. Banette
[97:27] 13, Spangenberg 10. Those are your
[97:29] notables for the Warriors. Race pros 21
[97:32] for Mameidi. Rest of the team 16. And
[97:35] again in a handicap spot, they knew this
[97:37] would be a tough matchup. But as Anisha
[97:39] Fischer told her players, this is that
[97:42] stretch. The younger folks like Mira
[97:44] Nelson, who had a few plays in the
[97:46] second half,
[97:47] and Lucy Pier, this is all part of the
[97:50] process. what it's like to make that
[97:52] transition from youth ball to varsity
[97:54] ball. It may not seem that way now, but
[97:57] this will help them get better down the
[97:58] road.
[97:59] >> It absolutely will. And couple years
[98:01] from now, those same players who were
[98:03] thrown into the deep end tonight could
[98:05] be swimming like Michael Phelps and Katy
[98:06] Leiddki.
[98:09] >> I would welcome that progression
[98:13] if it comes. And every game is a step
[98:16] along that journey. Here's a look at the
[98:18] final numbers.
[98:20] And that only tells a smidgen of the
[98:23] one-sided affair for Two Rivers as they
[98:26] finally defeat a conference rival and
[98:28] they hope to add a few more milestones
[98:32] on that checklist. Coaches around the
[98:34] metro including Connor get to Providence
[98:36] Academy have praised what Nia Holly is
[98:38] doing to bring that program back into
[98:40] contention and they certainly took a
[98:43] huge step with a 40-point victory over
[98:45] Mameidi.
[98:47] That will do it for a madamei
[98:51] as we begin this Martin Luther King
[98:52] weekend for Carl Warner and the rest of
[98:54] the SEC crew. This is Mike and thanking
[98:56] you for watching live coverage of high
[98:58] school girls basketball on SEC Sports.
[99:01] We'll see you next week.
[99:16] Heat.
[99:31] Heat.
