[0:15] So I knew almost immediatelythat this was the job for me. [0:19] Just the serving the community,the camaraderie, the good that [0:23] the department did. [0:24] It didn't take long at all. [0:26] Right [0:26] here is a picture of the firstfire truck that I responded on. [0:30] We actually rode on the backof the truck on the tail board. [0:33] It really builtthat trust and camaraderie. [0:35] As you were respondingto a scene, you would let go [0:39] and put your air pack onand other firefighters [0:43] then would help [0:44] hold youonto the back of the truck [0:46] while you're going downthe road. [0:48] You get your pack onand that you do the same thing. [0:50] So it was the ultimate trustbuilding [0:54] exercise. [1:00] The thing that I'm most proudof during my time [1:02] as chief is the relationshipsthat I built over the years [1:05] with the community, [1:06] firefighters,and our mutual aid partners. [1:08] It's not just putting outa fire. [1:10] It's, [1:11] you know, [1:11] assisting the homeownerafter the fire, [1:13] whether it's collectingbelongings, [1:15] medications, whatever.After the fire. [1:17] But I think if you do everything [1:19] through a customer servicelens, you'll never go wrong. [1:26] So one of the most rewardingmemories that I have with [1:29] the department was in 2018,we were called to rescue [1:33] a gentlemanwho had been struck by a train [1:36] on the border of Newport. [1:38] That call actuallywas the region's [1:41] 2018 rescue of the year. [1:43] What makes it rewardingand memorable was [1:46] we actually got to meet thethe person that we helped [1:48] that day to meet the young manand his son was truly rewarding [1:53] and just reiterateswhy we do this. [2:01] Being a paid on call department, [2:03] we couldn't do thiswithout our family. [2:04] Everybody, the department,they leave family events. [2:08] Big ones, small ones. [2:09] You know those life momentsthat you never get back. [2:11] Speaking of my wife,I couldn't do this without her. [2:13] In the middle of the night,the pager goes off. [2:15] She'll get up in the winter [2:16] and she'll break heatpacks for my boo. [2:19] She'll get to turn outall the lights and get stuff [2:22] ready for me to head out the dooShe's just been incredible. [2:29] So I hope people remembermy time with the department [2:31] for the dedication and servicethat I provided [2:35] to the citizens of Newport. [2:36] This job has been extremelygratifying to me, knowing [2:40] that even though somebodyis having a really bad day, [2:42] you can do a small tokento make it a little bit better.
