[Music] it's a unique thing to stumble upon a building that has stood for over 155 years but that is exactly what you'll find driving along 7th Avenue in Newport looking at the building today you might think it looks like a church and you'd be right in 1868 it was a Baptist Church and later held Methodist Services until it turned into the town's library in 1897. and since that day it's been a place for the community to gather ing not bad learn I do not like them yeah and enjoy each other's company the whole building was built with cherry wood so they literally took down the trees on the property to build the church the windows were recently restored the windows are really neat because they're the original windows and if you look at them just right you can see the that their milk glass which was the original way of making windows back in the 1800s one of the most unique things about the Newport library might be its collection all of the books in the library were donated over the last 10 years and so that's just really cool people do still donate books to us we're thrilled to take them and we try to shelve a lot of the new items we also like to shove a lot of Classics and I like to shelve things that I don't think people are going to find in other libraries as well just kind of little Diamonds in the Rough along with books the library also has magazines kids crafts DVDs including movie Nights meeting space and even puzzles and games so that's kind of fun families will come and check out a game or a puzzle because they know it's going to be a rainy weekend or something like that gives them something new and fun to do it's going to be in one of these two rows last fall a student named kayliana made her way into the library I would eat them here or there I would eat them anywhere she came in because she wanted to improve her reading levels and she has very much so done that and I think I'm getting a little emotional I apologize it's just one of the fun parts of our job kayliana not only comes once a week but twice a week and if you ask her what she thought about the Newport library she would say and what would she tell a friend just tell the mom and say can I go to the Newport library of course the answer would be yes thank you thank you Samurai there's other regular patrons as well every Wednesday just like clockwork a crafting group gathers so it's just a group of people whoever wants to join and it's very open to whatever craft you want to do it's a very comfortable place to do just feel very relaxed in it and feel like you can talk you don't have to be quiet and but it's a nice little Library I am making a Loom hat I make them and then I donate them to the Newport Elementary School speaking of donating time the Newport library is also looking for volunteers volunteers do mean that the doors are open more and the volunteers get to choose their own hours I felt this was a great way to give back to my community in a very Hands-On easy way frankly it's great to come in and see all the kids and hang out with them and help them with the computers and it's a small time commitment but it can also be a big time commitment whatever you want it's very flexible and that's attractive to me in my busy life we're always happy and excited to have someone join our team thank you
