South Washington County Schools Confronts $13 Million Deficit Driven by Declining Enrollment
The district is preparing for significant budget adjustments for the 2027-28 school year, with officials warning that increased taxpayer levies alone cannot bridge the substantial financial gap.
South Washington County Schools (SWCS) is bracing for a projected $13 million budget deficit for the 2027-28 school year, a significant financial challenge attributed primarily to declining student enrollment. The district's Board of Education recently convened to review its "Guiding Change Document for Budget Adjustments" and discuss the severe implications of the shortfall, necessitating comprehensive strategies beyond traditional revenue streams.
We will not be able to solve it by only seeking additional levy dollars from our taxpayers.
Superintendent Julie Nielson underscored the complexity of the financial situation, emphasizing that the district's response must be multifaceted. The immediate focus is on identifying and implementing adjustments to address the current deficit while planning for long-term financial stability. The district's preliminary budget presentation for 2026-27 provided an initial look at the fiscal landscape, highlighting the challenges ahead.
Chris Blackburn, Director of Business Services, presented the preliminary budget, explaining that the figures are estimates and subject to revision as more concrete data becomes available. The transparent presentation aimed to clarify financial terminology for board members and the public, helping stakeholders understand the basis for the tough decisions looming.
Many revenues and expenditures at this point are estimated, and so we always try to say that it's a snapshot in time.
