Newport Park Board Sets Winter Event Date, Reviews Summer Programs
The Newport City Council's Park Board met on August 27th to plan upcoming community events and review the success of summer programming. Board members tentatively scheduled the annual Winter Family Fun Night for January 30th, 2027, and discussed challenges with relocating a community library station from Lions Park.
The Park Board set January 30th, 2027 as the date for Newport's Winter Family Fun Night, choosing the last Saturday of the month to follow past practice and give residents time to plan ahead. Board member Emily White suggested the date, which was accepted by the board.
The board attempted to review the recent Pioneer Day event but found the discussion limited by absent members, including Dan Engler and Wayne Ford. White reported that a movie night preceding Pioneer Day drew an estimated 50 to 55 attendees and went well. The board postponed a full review until the next meeting when more board members can provide reports.
The Adventure Club, a community program that distributes activity packets through small libraries stationed in city parks, saw slightly lower participation this year compared to previous seasons, though engagement remained solid overall. The Chairperson thanked volunteer Sarah Marie and other volunteers for their work. Participants have until September 5th to submit paperwork to claim prizes.
The board also addressed a practical concern: the "little library" or "library on a stick" station at Lions Park needs to be relocated because changes to the park have made its current location unsuitable. These small libraries, distributed across Newport's parks, have served as distribution points for Adventure Club materials. Board members acknowledged the relocation need and will work to find a new location for the Lions Park station.
