Six candidates for Independent School District 833 school board participated in a public forum Tuesday, addressing key education issues facing the South Washington County district.

The League of Women Voters hosted the forum for candidates seeking four open positions on the nine-member board. Participating candidates were Chad Borseth, Elizabeth Bachmann Ekberg, Juan Huerta, Lori Pesia Mckowski, Katie Schwarz, and Sharon Vanlier. Three candidates—Travis Dolly, Bin Forsner, and Louise Hines—were unable to attend but had opening statements read.

Candidates addressed chronic absenteeism affecting 25% of district students, with several identifying it as a priority concern. Borseth, a current classroom teacher, called the absenteeism rate "a five alarm fire" requiring urgent attention. The district serves students across multiple communities including Woodbury, Cottage Grove, and Newport.

School safety emerged as another key topic, with candidates discussing both physical security measures and mental health support. Recent bond funding has supported security improvements including secure entrances and building renovations. Candidates emphasized the importance of social workers, counselors, and trauma-informed approaches to student wellness.

The forum also covered the district's implementation of the Read Act, a state literacy initiative. Most candidates praised the program's individualized approach and student choice in reading materials. The district's strategic plan, focusing on equity, connection, and educational innovation, received discussion regarding community engagement and transparency in decision-making.
