The South Washington County School Board advanced several key initiatives during its Nov. 6 business meeting, including first reading approval of the 2026-27 academic calendar and a comprehensive language access plan.

The proposed calendar maintains an after-Labor Day start with the first full day of classes scheduled for Sept. 9, 2026, and a June 9, 2027 conclusion. The calendar extends the first trimester until Dec. 3, later than in previous years when it ended before Thanksgiving. Board Chair Katie Schwarz expressed concerns about students taking finals after the holiday break, noting the importance of allowing proper decompression time.

The board also reviewed a language access plan designed to serve families speaking more than 80 languages within the district. Dr. Megan Hickey, executive director of student support services, reported the district has welcomed over 125 new-to-country families since July and utilized more than 5,700 minutes of professional interpretation services. The plan standardizes procedures for translation and interpretation services across all district buildings.

A controversial Title IX resolution proposed by Board Member Ryan Clark failed to advance after lacking majority support. Clark cited a federal finding that Minnesota violates Title IX by allowing transgender athletes to compete based on gender identity rather than biological sex. The resolution would have urged state education leaders to review current policies, but board members expressed concerns about potential discrimination and legal risks.

Superintendent Julie Nielsen provided strategic plan updates, highlighting continued focus on literacy initiatives, data systems implementation, and community partnerships. The district remains within budget parameters while monitoring enrollment trends that show slight declines from projected numbers.
