The South Washington County School Board addressed ongoing contract negotiations with office professionals and approved open enrollment procedures during its regular business meeting Wednesday at the District Service Center in Cottage Grove.

Office professionals currently working without contracts spoke during public comments, expressing concerns about proposed wage increases and rising benefit costs. Jennifer Johansson, an office coordinator with 20 years in the district, told board members the proposed 0.5% wage increase could result in employees receiving as little as one cent per hour more when factoring in new family leave deductions and insurance premium increases.

Joy Gillson, a district healthcare specialist, said the current proposal would benefit only 17% of union members while others would see reduced paychecks. Both speakers invited board members to attend the next negotiation meeting scheduled for October 28 at 4 p.m. at the district service center.

The board approved an open enrollment resolution setting capacity limits for non-resident students. Assistant Superintendent Kelly Jansen said applications will be accepted from December 1 through January 15, with decision letters mailed by February 15. The resolution limits enrollment when elementary and middle schools reach 95% capacity and high schools reach 100% capacity.

Board members also approved policy updates and authorized applications for Minnesota State High School League Foundation grants. Superintendent Julie Nielsson reported continued bus driver shortages affecting afternoon routes and promoted upcoming high school theatrical productions at all three district high schools.
