The Oakdale Economic Development Commission re-elected Jeff Bates as chair and elected Tony Jenkins as vice chair during their April 2 meeting, while reviewing results from the city's second year of business retention visits.

The commission reviewed the Business Retention, Expansion and Attraction (BRIA) program's second-year report, which documented 12 visits to local businesses and nonprofits. According to the report prepared by St. Paul Area Chamber staff, 10 of the 12 businesses visited were planning facility improvements including expansions, remodels and facade upgrades.

Businesses praised Oakdale's central location, highway access and public safety departments during the visits. However, the report identified areas for improvement including enhancing the city's brand and reputation, better business support services, and streamlining permitting processes. Most businesses reported that employees arrive by personal vehicle but showed interest in the new Gold Line transit service.

Staff provided updates on significant developments including the March 22 Gold Line opening and upcoming redevelopment studies. Economic Development Coordinator Max reported that more than 600 multifamily units have been approved near the Helmo station since the transit-oriented development district was created. The city is also preparing for a public reception on April 28 at the Oakdale Discovery Center for the 12th and Geneva redevelopment study.

The commission approved their 2025 work plan, which includes continuing business visits, participating in redevelopment efforts, and collaborating with other economic development organizations. Staff noted that the zoning code update draft is currently under legal review and expected to be completed by the end of April.
