The Oakdale Environmental Management Commission received updates on regional water education initiatives and pending zoning code changes during their March 17 meeting.

Angie Hong from the East Metro Water Education Program outlined upcoming conservation activities in the Oakdale area, including specialized grant funding for pollinator habitat projects near Tanner Lake. The Washington Conservation District secured funding through the statewide "lawns to legumes" program to support 10 to 15 new planting projects in the area east of Tanner Lake, with potential rain garden installations coordinated with planned road improvements.

City staff member Max Lozi presented proposed changes to Oakdale's zoning and subdivision codes, the first comprehensive update since 2008. The revisions aim to consolidate the city's 14 zoning districts, reduce parking requirements across most developments, and clarify tree preservation standards. Lozi said the city hired consulting firm HKGI to assist with the project, which targets adoption in June 2025.

The commission finalized preparations for the April 19 EcoFair, with over 15 vendors confirmed and promotional materials ready for distribution. Staff liaison Hannah Dunn reported that Merit Chevrolet will display an electric vehicle and various energy efficiency and native landscaping vendors will participate.

Commissioners also approved plans for the annual fall cleanup event scheduled for September 20, following last year's successful collection of materials from over 300 vehicles. The event will again be held at the city's public works facility with multiple recycling vendors participating.
