Back to School Report: Enrollment, Staffing, Transportation, and Professional Development

Information Item, no formal vote

The report detailed current enrollment figures, recent hires, and existing staff vacancies, notably 18 unfilled para professional positions. A significant discussion point was the impact of a recent legislative change allowing hourly school employees to collect summer unemployment, leading to last-minute resignations. Transportation challenges, including alternate address routing and software issues with vendors like Power School, were highlighted. The professional development section outlined focus areas in literacy (LETTERS training), equity (new coordinator, identity harm protocols), and social-emotional learning (BAR program expansion), emphasizing a data-driven approach to improve student outcomes.

Assessment Update: MCA and MTAS Results

Information Item, no formal vote

The presentation compared Stillwater's MCA and MTAS proficiency rates against East Metro districts and a custom set of similar districts (by size and free/reduced lunch rates). While performing well regionally, Stillwater lagged in reading and math against comparable districts, though showing an upward trend post-pandemic. Discussion focused on the importance of data-driven systems, curriculum alignment, staff support, and leadership stability as key levers for continued improvement. The Superintendent emphasized a commitment to continuous positive trajectory.

Long-Term Facility Maintenance Summer Update

Information Item, no formal vote

Executive Director Mark Jo provided an update on summer facility projects across several schools, funded by long-term facility maintenance funds. Projects included renovations in offices, classrooms, restrooms (for ADA accessibility), and kitchen/cafeteria areas, as well as lighting and door replacements. The purpose was to maintain buildings, provide suitable learning spaces, replace outdated equipment, and address asbestos. Staff reactions to the improvements, particularly in renovated classrooms, were highlighted as very positive, contributing to better student learning environments.

our 18 pair professionals you see unfilled here are are an unintended consequence of that legislation we just had within the last few days before school started 15 or 16 PA of professionals resign after they collected their summer unemployment

The other vendor power school has virtually done nothing to support us in this whole process... I consider power schools tech support and abject failure in uh in our situation here.

Our scores improved slightly from last year to this year in all subjects. We rank second among the other East Metro school districts but second last one comparing with districts that have a similar size and percentage of students eligible for free and reduced lunch.

as lights fail and replace you really can't replace the fluorescent bulbs and things that we have they just don't make those anymore so when they fail we usually do ceilings and and lighting at the same time so replace it with LED lights
