[0:06] We're here today to
look at some of the plot spaces
[0:08] in the Woodbury
Community Garden,
[0:10] and we're going to talk about
how to optimize the space.
[0:16] These plots are nine
by thirteen.
[0:19] The gardeners want to get
as many vegetables as they can
[0:22] so I'm going to show you
[0:23] some of the things
that were done in this plot
[0:26] that optimizes the space.
[0:27] What this particular garden
[0:29] has done,
they've put three walkways.
[0:30] The walkways
give them access to the garden,
[0:33] but it also gives them
ample access to the vegetables
[0:37] on either side of the garden.
[0:38] What you want to do
is you want to grow up.
[0:40] You can't grow out
because you'll interfere
[0:43] with somebody else's space.
[0:44] You'll go into the pathway.
[0:46] The optimum thing is to grow up.
[0:48] This particular garden, they put
cages on the tomato plants,
[0:52] and so the tomato plants
will grow up,
[0:54] but it'll keep the tomatoes
from falling on the ground
[0:58] where they rot.
[0:59] And then they put some peas
here in the front,
[1:02] also with a small trellis
for them to grow up there.
[1:06] They put kale in the back
corner.
[1:08] They put the lettuce,
They put the peppers over here.
[1:11] In the back corner,
we have eggplants.
[1:14] This is cucumbers.
[1:15] Cucumbers
that come in two types.
[1:17] They put the vine cucumbers
so they'll grow up the trellis,
[1:21] fall over,
and then they can pick them.
[1:23] Squash plant is right here.
[1:25] The squash grows out,
stays low to the ground.
[1:29] So they put it out
[1:30] close to the edge of the garden
so that it has room to spread.
[1:34] If you have any questions,
there's a website,
[1:37] the University of Minnesota
Ask a Master Gardener.
