[0:03] I'm proud [0:04] of the strong, independent women in my family. [0:07] My grandmother was the first in her family [0:09] to immigrate from El Salvador, [0:11] leaving behind an oppressive government [0:13] to pursue the American dream. [0:15] At the time, there were little financial [0:16] opportunities, especially for women. [0:19] She came to Los Angeles and within two days got a job. [0:23] Despite not knowing the language or the massive city. [0:26] Her courage really opened the doors [0:28] for the rest of the family. [0:29] My mom continues that legacy. [0:31] She serves [0:32] on the board of the Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs, [0:35] where she advises [0:36] the governor and legislature [0:38] on issues that matter to Latinos in our state. [0:41] Her leadership and voice make me proud of where I come from. [0:44] What makes me proud of my heritage [0:46] as being Puerto Rican is that you know [0:48] our heritage, as Puerto Rican. [0:49] It's a it's an infusion of Taíno, Indian, [0:53] African and Spanish colonizers. [0:56] It is kind of very diverse in our culture, [0:59] and it brings the best worlds of all three. [1:02] Different backgrounds [1:03] coming into, what Puerto Rican culture is all about. [1:07] And we take pride of who [1:08] we are and our roots and our language and our flag. [1:13] What Puerto Rico stands for. [1:14] And also we have, a very strong sense of family [1:19] around food and customs and tradition.
