As you might recall, we anticipate beginning the remodel and expansion of our public safety campus in spring 2026. At our May 28th workshop, staff updated the city council on the project's progress and shared preliminary renderings of the building. It seems like an appropriate time to share some project updates with you. With the adjacent wetlands behind the building to the west, the site offers some unique challenges for expansion. To accommodate the need for more space, a second level will be added above part of the new structure and the campus will be expanded to the south where the soontobe vacated existing Washington County Service Center sits. Emergency medical services and fire vehicle access will be moved further south at the existing traffic signal at Central Park Place and Radio Drive to improve controlled access to Radio Drive. The public parking lot and building entrance will be moved to the north end of the property. The project is needed to ensure that the city continues to deliver the highest possible levels of public safety. The current facility is overcrowded and inadequate for emergency vehicle response and does not position us for success as we experience increased demands on our staff, programs, and emergency services. We are committed to maintaining highquality public safety services throughout this transition. Additional details about service adjustments will be shared as they become available. Limited public safety administrative services will be provided at city hall during construction. Emergency police, fire, and medical services will continue to be maintained at a high level from different locations around the city, such as at our fire stations. Furthermore, as part of the construction, some public safety operations will temporarily move to the former Washington County Services Building. Washington County plans to move to its new service center on Woodlane Drive in November. At that time, we will begin transitioning the vacant space for temporary use by public safety personnel. We appreciate the public support of this project through the November 2024 referendum. The project will be primarily funded through a.5% sales tax that began in April. Funds from this sales tax will be dedicated solely to the project and will end when the funding reaches $50 million or in 20 years, whichever comes first. We see the sales tax as a shared investment because residents and visitors alike will share in funding the public safety services that they use. The remaining project funding will come from grants along with a $13 annual increase in property taxes. The city continues to refine the building design and site layout of the public safety campus with anticipated construction bidding in late fall.
