The city of Woodbury released new safety guidelines for electric bicycle users as e-bike usage increases on city trails and streets.
Under Minnesota law, riders must be at least 15 years old to operate an e-bike, and the city encourages all users to wear helmets. Only pedal-assist e-bikes are permitted on park trails, with riders required to maintain controlled speeds and show respect for other trail users.
The guidelines emphasize proper trail etiquette, including passing on the left side while providing verbal warnings or bell signals to approaching users. Eye contact before passing is recommended as an additional safety measure.
On city streets, e-bike riders must follow standard traffic rules, including riding on the right side of the road, obeying traffic signs, and signaling turns and stops. Licensed e-motos, motorized bicycles, and electric scooters are prohibited on city trails and sidewalks, though they may be permitted on streets under certain conditions.
