School Board Approves Meals on Wheels Transfer
The ISD 622 school board approved the transfer of its Meals on Wheels program to Merrick Community Services during its June 24 meeting, ending nearly 50 years of district involvement in the meal delivery service.
The district cited financial challenges and changing community needs as factors in the decision to transfer operations to Merrick Community Services, located less than two miles away. According to district officials, ISD 622 was the smallest program in the Ramsey County Meals on Wheels consortium, while Merrick has capacity for expansion and fundraising capabilities to support programming needs.
The board also approved a $103,000 waste reduction and recycling grant focused on standardizing containers across the district, implementing milk carton recycling programs, and collecting organic food waste. The grant supports the district's ongoing green energy initiatives and includes volume analysis to streamline operations and reduce costs.
Much of the meeting was dedicated to achievement awards presentations from North and Tartan High Schools. Highlights included North High's boys volleyball team finishing fifth at state with a 26-4 record, and Tartan student Molly Law winning a triple threat theater competition that earned her an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City to see Broadway shows.
Other recognitions included North High's state champions in adaptive bowling, the Metro East Conference softball champions, and Tartan sophomore Jaylen Gordon's qualification for the state track and field meet in high jump after tying the school record.
