[23:05] Woodbury Memorial Day celebration We do enjoy the long weekend We join with friends for barbecues It marks the start

[23:13] of summer but today I am thankful for all of you gathered here in this solemn

[23:18] occasion to honor American service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country It

[23:26] is this holiday that allows us to celebrate all the other

[23:32] holidays Thank you to BFW Post 9024 and American Legion Post 501 for hosting

[23:38] this event I am honored every year to provide the opening remarks but it is your organizations that do the intense

[23:46] planning and the orchestrating of this celebration so that we can keep our promise to always remember our fallen

[23:52] heroes Thank you for serving our country and for continuing to serve our community Now I just like to take a note

[23:59] just spank thank the many sponsors uh that are listed in your program This event can't go off without those So

[24:05] support them in any way you can and thank you sponsors for helping to bring this together Years ago the city of Woodbury

[24:12] was approached by the Woodbury Lions Club with a vision about this memorial And working together they created this

[24:18] beautiful venue for today's celebration Each year I mentioned and give special recognition to the

[24:24] architect and Lions Club member who designed this space His name is Dickr Dick always attended this event

[24:32] but this year he was not with us Sadly he passed away yesterday after a very

[24:37] short illness But thank you Dick for creating this lasting memory for us and

[24:43] for future generations to always remember those who fought and continue to fight for freedom of us and all

[24:50] Americans [Applause]

[25:00] Like many of you my family wanted to pay tribute and have a lasting memory to our family members who served to protect our

[25:06] country And it's heartwarming to have those names engraved on these very bricks in this community that we love

[25:12] and call home And if you haven't had the opportunity and you want to there are many spaces available to honor your

[25:18] family members or friends that have served in our community It's my privilege to also introduce

[25:24] other elected officials that are here with us today We have three from the Woodbury City Council that serve

[26:28] is the ability to turn the spotlight onto our wonderful residents that live here with us Today I want to introduce

[26:35] to you introduce to you Jack Andrashco sitting here to my

[26:41] left He is a World War II veteran and 100 years old Although you would not

[26:47] think that by looking at [Applause]

[26:54] him At age 19 Jack joined the US Army as an artillery man and served in the

[27:00] European theater from July 1944 to January 1946 And he fought in the Battle

[27:06] of the Bulge Jack was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for his heroic and meritorious achievement in the combat

[27:13] zone And Jack would love to just say a few words to you

[27:22] [Applause] Well first of all I'm really impressed

[27:29] with the uh crowd and I'm happy to be here to represent the wet veterans of

[27:36] World War II and the early days of uh World War II And it's uh just plain

[27:43] honor and I want to thank all of you Thank you [Applause]

[27:57] And we all have family members that were in World War II or the Korean War or the Vietnam War and the following wars Um uh

[28:05] to have a World War II vet here is really a treat sir Thank you for your attendance

[29:12] number of people from both of the world wars Korean War and Vietnam So there is

[29:17] a lot of history here Uh they are are a diverse group wedded to the belief that

[29:23] America is a nation worth dying for We gather so that we can remember their

[29:28] sacrifices and celebrate the fact that throughout our history this great

[29:34] country produces such men and women of honor We must not forget them I want to

[29:40] make sure I extend a special thank you to Richard Katy and his Memorial Day committee for bringing together such a

[29:46] great array of speakers and organizations that have helped us remember what this day is all about

[45:50] done It is now my distinct pleasure to introduce our keynote speaker Major Tyler Kissner United States Marine Corps

[45:58] Major Tyler Kissner is a native Minnesota raised in Champlain and Brooklyn Park Minnesota Kissner

[46:04] graduated from the University of Minnesota earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in history Tyler began his US

[46:10] Marine Corps career on active duty in 2011 Upon completion of the infry in

[46:16] infantry officer course he proceeded to Canoi Bay Hawaii Assigned to the third

[46:22] battalion third marine regiment as a weapons platoon commander and rifle company executive officer In 2015 Tyler

[46:29] attended the Marine Special Operations Officer Course And upon completion he proceeded to Stone Bay North Carolina

[46:36] assigned to the Third Marine Raider Battalion as a special operations team commander He was then assigned to Marine

[46:42] Corps forces special operations command Mars headquarters as the executive

[46:48] assistant to the commanding general of Mars In 2019 Tyler transitions out of

[46:53] active duty into the reserves where he served as a Mars training evaluator and

[46:58] recruit and recruiting support officer Tyler currently serves as a strategic planner for Marine Corps forces

[47:05] Indo-Pacific Command Major Kissner deployed five times from

[47:10] 2012 to 2013 He deployed twice to the Indo-acific the Philippines Indonesia

[47:16] Thailand Malaysia and Korea in support of counterterrorism and counter China aggression operations From

[47:23] 2016 to 2018 he deployed twice to North Africa in support of counterterrorism

[47:28] and counter China and Russia operations From 2023 to 2024 he was activated out

[47:35] of the reserves and deployed for a year to Iraq in support of contingency operations to the North Atlantic Treaty

[47:41] Organization Mission Iraq in Operation Inherent Resolve in support of counterterrorism and counter Iranian

[47:48] threat network operations He obtained his master of

[47:55] arts degrees in international relations from New England College in 2020 His other military education comprises

[48:02] completion of the joint fires controller course expeditionary warfare course multiple mission parachute course which

[48:09] is a military freefall special operations information operations course and command and staff college Throughout

[48:16] his 14-year career Major Kissner demonstrated exceptional merit in various high level positions He served

[48:23] with distinction being awarded the Navy Achievement Medal Myritorius Service Medal Joint Service Achievement Medal

[48:29] Joint Service Commenation Medal with Combat Device and Defense Metorius

[48:34] Service Medal Tyler currently works as the senior counterterrorism policy and programs advisor to the assistant

[48:41] secretary of defense for special operations and low inensity conflict He is also a tireless advocate for veterans

[48:47] and our military He's a member of the Think Great Foundation a nonprofit that supports uh spouses of veterans and

[48:54] their continuing education Please welcome Major [Applause]

[49:07] K Well good morning everyone That was a quick short bio for someone who only looks like he's 12 years old

[49:15] Um I can say everyone makes a comment about the weather It is a lot better than Iraq and Syria So I can promise you

[49:22] that with this nice cool weather Um for those who are wondering where my wife was when she got introduced we thought

[49:28] it would be best if my children were not on the stage distracting you So if you can give her a round of applause for the

[49:34] support that she

[49:39] gives And before I get started I want to make sure we give honor where honor is due So can we show our appreciation to

[49:47] all the men and women of our armed forces both present and past and can you please

[49:53] [Applause]

[49:58] stand thank you all for your service and your sacrifice to this

[50:04] country Let's give a round of applause to the military spouses the unsung heroes of our veterans

[50:14] I can say from experience without them by our side we would not have the strength to do what we do day in and day

[50:20] out to go overseas and separate ourselves from our loved ones to put this country and each one of you first

[50:26] and foremost And then also I know we've given them a lot of appreciation but let's give one more round of applause to

[50:32] our volunteers who put on this phenomenal uh ceremony

[50:40] And then lastly I know he's been applauded enough but let's give one more round of applause to the man who helped

[50:45] put this all together Richard Caddyy Man who helped organize this phenomenal spectacular delay display of our armed

[50:52] forces and a tribute to our fallen heroes Richard thank you for everything you've done God bless you And at this

[50:59] point I don't know what was harder putting this event on or me getting this uniform set up and actually try to get this put on So it was a feat in and of

[51:06] itself But uh in all seriousness it is an honor to be standing here before you

[51:12] all today on this solemn Memorial Day As I look across this crowd and look into our veterans eyes I can see etched

[51:20] within understanding in their minds the brothers and sisters who know deep in their bones the true cost of

[51:27] freedom And those who haven't wore the uniform I want to thank you for being here Thank you for taking your kids out

[51:33] to an event like this and taking time out of your busy schedules to remember

[51:38] and understand the true debt that we all owe to our veterans and those who have fallen and given the ultimate sacrifice

[51:45] For Memorial Day is more than just a day off It's not about the sales of the picnics and I understand those can have

[51:50] their place But today we don't just take for granted the ground we stand on For

[51:56] the ground we stand on all ground with our beloved United States of America is

[52:01] hallowed ground ground made sacred by the blood and sacrifice of those who

[52:07] stood between us and tyranny It's a day to confront the weight of that sacrifice

[52:12] to truly grasp what it means to give everything for something greater than oneself It's a day dedicated to the men

[52:19] and women who've answered freedom's call and who will never return home

[52:27] I can say I never really understood what veterans or Memorial Day was and really

[52:32] the reliance that we put on one another in service until it was my time as a

[52:37] Marine Raider when I was serving the Marine Special Operations when it truly taught me what reliance meant We were a

[52:44] band of brothers and sisters forged in the crucible of training and tempered by the harsh realities of combating

[52:50] terrorism from North Africa to the Middle East We trusted each other implicitly knowing that our lives

[52:56] depended on it And we shouldered the burden together striving to bring each other home to our families and our loved

[53:02] ones But the truth is even in the strongest bonds the most rigorous

[53:08] training it can never always overcome the darkness And with that we always carry a

[53:14] weight of loss We see their faces in our dreams We can hear their voices in the

[53:19] wind We remember their stories and their laughter and we remember their

[53:27] dreams Dreams now eternally unfulfilled And we carry the weight of

[53:32] knowing what could have been and the void that they left behind A void that echoes throughout our

[53:39] lives But with that loss comes an unshakable responsibility A responsibility to be

[53:45] worthy of their sacrifices a responsibility to defend the freedoms that they died protecting And lastly a

[53:52] responsibility to ensure their names are not just remembered but honored through our [Music]

[53:58] actions And I know each of us we carry a memory and a name of a fallen soldier

[54:04] marine sailor or airman And today I just want to specifically remember my good friend

[54:11] Movis He was a fellow Marine Raider and a great friend He wasn't just an officer

[54:19] He was a leader a mentor He was a friend and a warrior to the truest and utmost

[54:24] sense of the word Mo embodied the Marine Corps ethos seer fidelis which means always

[54:30] faithful He was brave intelligent compassionate and Mo was fiercely loyal

[54:37] He led from the front and always prioritized the well-being of his Marines before himself

[54:43] I can remember the first time I met Mo We were young a lot younger than I am now We were ambitious eager to prove

[54:51] ourselves and ready to take on any task or challenge Even then Mo radiated with a

[54:58] quiet confidence a sense of purpose that drew people around him He had an infectious spirit a way of inspiring

[55:04] those around him to be better He was that kind of leader you'd follow anywhere knowing he'd have your back no

[55:10] matter what the cost would be Unfortunately Mo was killed in action in northern Iraq on March 8th of

[55:19] 2020 just like he was always leading his men from the front in a fierce firefight

[55:25] against the remnants of ISIS And on that day he made the ultimate sacrifice still protecting the

[55:32] Marines he was leading Mo left behind more than just his Marine Raiders

[55:38] Mo left behind a beautiful wife his middle school sweetheart Lette and four amazing kids Kaye Aiden

[55:46] Micah and Liam He'd always joked they made up the acronym Calm yet that was the last thing they ever brought

[55:54] him And Mo's loss as a leader within the Mars community it left a void that can never

[56:01] be felt or filled And just like Mo and the examples that

[56:07] each of you carry it's just one example a single thread in our nation's history

[56:14] of sacrifice woven by our service members Every name etched on a headstone

[56:19] every flag waving gently in the breeze res represents a life laid down a future

[56:26] stolen and a family forever changed Behind each of those names it's

[56:31] a story story of courage duty and a story of devotion to something greater

[56:37] than themselves So on this Memorial Day let

[56:43] us not only just mourn their loss but truly understand the weight of their sacrifice Let us celebrate their lives

[56:50] yes but let us also acknowledge the immense burden they carried the price they paid for our freedom Let us honor

[56:58] honor their memory not just with our words but also with our actions Let us

[57:03] be vigilant in defending freedom that they fought so heavily for Let us be

[57:08] active participants in our democracy holding our leaders accountable and ensuring that the sacrifices of our

[57:14] fallen are never in vain And let us remember their families they left behind Like Mo's wife Lette and his four kids

[57:22] they bear a burden that is unimaginable Let us offer them the unwavering support

[57:28] our enduring gratitude and our steadfast friendship Let them know that our loved

[57:34] ones their loved ones are not forgotten and their sacrifice is deeply

[57:41] appreciated And I can say with closing the debt we owe to these heroes is immeasurable We can never truly repay it

[57:50] but we can honor their memory by living out a life of purpose By standing up for what is right and by defending freedom

[57:57] at every turn and never ever forgetting the price that was paid to ensure that

[58:03] we have the freedoms that we get to uh enjoy and be blessed with And so it's on you The torch has

[58:10] been passed to all of us Let us carry it with honor and courage and unwavering

[58:17] resolve Let us stand and press on not accepting to live the rest of our lives on our knees in the face of adversity

[58:24] And let us take every moment to honor their sacrifice and embracing and take uh sacrifice by embracing and taking

[58:32] time with our families as our fallen heroes would want nothing more than just one more second of theirs So with that

[1:00:00] conducting the last roll call ceremony For those who aren't familiar with the last roll call ceremony it is part of a

[1:00:07] memorial ceremony when a soldier has died in the line of duty The company first sergeant calls off the names of

[1:00:13] members of the unit Each soldier then responds "Here first sergeant." The

[1:00:18] fallen soldiers names are then called and when there is no answer the casket is brought forward

[1:00:26] Fortunately there has been no Minnesota service personnel killed in action during this past year So we will be

[1:00:33] doing something a little different I invite you to stand as we pay tribute to our fallen comrades

[1:00:58] Okay We want to honor members of the Woodbury VFW Post 9024 and American Legion Post 501 who have passed away

[1:01:05] this year In addition we would like to honor the 26 Minnesota US Marines who were

[1:01:12] killed in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom
