[3:11] arms
[3:28] face
[3:43] thank you may be
[3:58] seated good afternoon everybody thank you for coming my name is Brian Johnson I'm a lieutenant with the sheriff's
[4:03] office just a few housekeeping uh po parts and then I'll introduce uh our main speaker here when we call up the
[4:11] new employees name we're going to have you come up this way you will meet with the Command Staff you'll get a challenge
[4:17] coin you'll get your certificate you'll go up and around right over to this area where
[4:24] we'll have your photos and we'll also have your designated family member friend or person who is putting your
[4:30] badge on up there as well so we'll we'll do photographs that way if it starts getting backed up what we'll have you
[4:37] guys do is just kind of go out that door so we can just kind of keep everybody moving for most of you I've already said
[4:43] this but I'm going to apologize to family and friends in advance I woke up this morning actually having a panic
[4:49] attack and a cold sweat because I knew I had to say all these names and I practice them I've wrote them phenetically that work for me and I'm
[4:55] still going to screw them up uh every week I do the sheriff's report and I got to read a bunch of names and it's just
[5:00] not my forte as far as sounding them all really well but I am going to do my best
[5:06] couple of you it's not I'm I just apologize in advance and apologize to
[5:11] family and friends um we're just so glad to have you guys here this is something that that we've been doing now for for
[5:18] for many years that was not uh something that we had when a lot of us started um
[5:23] some of us that we have some of our retired um Personnel here um and and and
[5:29] P sheriffs uh but this is something that we just felt was extremely important
[5:34] because this is a family and working for right County working for right County
[5:40] Sheriff's Office uh is is is not just a job it's not just a career um and and
[5:45] we've built a culture not only within the sheriff's office but within the county and the people that we serve and
[5:51] the other people that we work with a culture that is second to none uh that is why we are not struggling in certain
[5:59] areas that other counties other law enforcement agencies are that is why
[6:04] we're able to have such high quality people working here I'm celebrating in December my 26th year here I grew up in
[6:10] the Metro I had no plans on staying out here um but very quickly got drawn in um
[6:18] and this is my home and this is where I will stay until I leave so we're just grateful to have your family members
[6:24] your spouses your children here and uh we hope they stay here for a very long time uh I say this a lot but one of the
[6:31] things I I do always bring up is uh my favorite one of my favorite quotes is true leadership is never sacrificing the
[6:38] people underneath you to save yourselves and I have the the luxury and the pleasure and the honor to not only work
[6:44] with my friend um but uh to work with them as my my boss and our elected
[6:49] official and our sheriff and I just would like to introduce Sheriff Shan
[6:58] daringer [Applause] you are too kind Brian thank you very
[7:05] much and when he says he woke up this morning in a cold sweat y'all he ain't kidding you he woke up this morning in a
[7:12] cold sweat because that's just be that's just the the person that he is
[7:18] so once again looking out in this room I can become emotional this is what we do
[7:25] this is what we strive for and as you will hear me talk in a couple of minutes in in the speech that I've prepared we
[7:32] are not going to be able to do what we do and successfully hit the Finish Line
[7:39] without these people here to support us and so take a moment to look around
[7:45] because this is this is our support system so thank you all for being here I
[7:50] am absolutely humbled that we offer this opportunity because we know how
[7:56] important it is and you continue to show up uh in support in support of these
[8:02] folks your family but also in support of this office and and and the culture that
[8:08] that we have here so thank you all very much for being here uh those of you that
[8:14] already work for me but for your families I am from the heart you will hear me talk from the heart today and
[8:22] it's interesting because I don't have to apologize for anything when I get done and walk out of here because I'm not
[8:30] just giving you lip service this is what we live this is what we believe in every
[8:36] single day just a couple of thank yous here I know that we've got several of our commissioners uh present County
[8:43] Commissioners our County Administrator your honor thank you for being
[8:49] here and our County attorney Brian loots thank you all for being here and I think that that just goes to show the broad
[8:56] support and everything that we do here is based on on relationships and to have these people in the room showing their
[9:02] support to the job that you do the office that we have and the job that we do in our community is so important and
[9:09] so valued so thank you all for being here something I love to do uh any
[9:15] veterans or former current military can you please
[9:25] stand thank you very much for this service
[9:36] any current or retired law enforcement in the room please
[9:46] [Applause] stand thank you all for being here and
[9:53] any corrections current or retired
[10:00] thank you very much for being here I do that folks because you never
[10:07] know who is sitting next to you it could be a guardian of your community and you
[10:14] may not know that but they are always on alert and always on guard I do want to
[10:21] have a special shout out uh former Sheriff Don HOSA stood up he is with us
[10:26] today can you stand up one more time Sheriff [Applause]
[10:35] almost 28 years ago that man took a chance on some kid that he didn't really know from North Dakota so my question to
[10:44] any of you is in several years from now will you stand in front of a group of
[10:49] people like this as the sheriff of Wright County I would be honored to have somebody that I hired become a future
[10:56] Sheriff of this County so thank you very much for being here it means uh a great
[11:02] deal thank you five years ago when I was sworn in I
[11:08] had team meetings with my entire team uh of staff and I told them that the fight
[11:15] was not inside the four walls of the sheriff's office as you can see turning on the news our world and our society
[11:23] seems like it's turning into a series of flash points and you have to have somebody
[11:29] standing in that Gap and so rightfully so the the fight should not be inside
[11:35] the walls of the Sheriff's Office it was and remains my priority to Foster an
[11:41] environment where our team feels valued appreciated and respected and I just
[11:47] want to give a shout out I am completely blessed that I have a Command Staff that
[11:52] also believes in that vision and supports it every single day so thank you all that uh that are sitting up here
[12:00] to my [Applause]
[12:08] left she has been running around here like crazy today but Kristen where are you at of course you're way in the back
[12:14] trying to hide a day like this does not happen by accident it's a tremendous
[12:20] amount of work and effort and she continues to work tirelessly because she believes and loves the work that you do
[12:27] so much and she absolutely with her heart and soul supports uh not only the
[12:33] people of this office but the office uh the greater good of the office so thank
[12:38] you Kristen for everything that you continue to [Applause]
[12:45] do our facilities folks and our custodians doesn't happen by accident to
[12:51] tear down walls and push walls and bring in chairs and get everything set up they
[12:56] did an amazing job and last but not least Honor Guard once again you look
[13:01] fantastic thank you for representing us so well today I appreciate your
[13:13] efforts I think I had to make my speech like 48 pages I got the font big enough
[13:18] I can read it without my glasses it's really not a 48 page speech
[13:23] but real quick I would like to thank my wife for also being here Tammy I saw you
[13:31] where are you at hiding hello thank you very much for
[13:37] being here I'll get to you later last but certainly not least to
[13:45] our newest members of the r County Sheriff's office thank you all for coming and thank you families for coming
[13:53] and showing your support for them I recognize that there will come a time that I call upon each of you to put
[14:01] yourself In Harm's Way and you will be forced to make a withdraw or take a
[14:06] withdraw from your family Bank my message to them and I'm giving it to you
[14:13] all today is invest wisely in your
[14:20] families good Lord willing we can all put this place in the rearview mirror
[14:25] and if we've done it right and have invested wisely our families will still be standing next to
[14:32] us families there is no doubt we will need your support and encouragement to
[14:37] get through the bad days and the rough times take advantage of your time off
[14:44] and invest wisely make frequent deposits into your
[14:50] family Bank over the course of my career there have been many times that I have
[14:55] been forced to look at my own priorities in life and re-evaluate I nearly missed my
[15:02] daughter's 12th birthday as we were in the middle of a homicide investigation I forced myself to peel
[15:10] away for about 45 minutes but I was not going to miss that moment in time and
[15:17] while I missed the vast majority of it it was one of those times that was not easier for my family to have my absence
[15:25] but with wise Investments we were able to weather the store STM there is no doubt I've given my family plenty of
[15:32] opportunity to kick me to the curb but we have gotten through it together I
[15:37] have been blessed to have a loving support of my family during the very difficult times that support has never
[15:43] wavered and has always been needed and appreciated we need to take care of one
[15:49] another and I stand committed to make all of you my number one priority no one
[15:56] in this family stands alone some people have asked me what the
[16:01] secret to success within the right County Sheriff's is and it comes Sheriff's Office is it comes down to
[16:07] four things legal ethical partnership and treat everyone with respect and
[16:14] dignity we are all part of something bigger than ourselves on duty and off
[16:20] duty we represent the right County Sheriff's Office in the Greater Community of law
[16:25] enforcement if we are going to M remain a above reproach we should conduct
[16:31] ourselves accordingly if you all conduct yourselves legally ethically and treat
[16:38] people with dignity and respect I will always defend you I have often defined leadership as
[16:46] having the ability to encourage and Inspire others to reach their full
[16:52] potential whatever that full potential is you do not have to be a supervisor
[16:58] advisor to be a leader within the r County Sheriff's Office in fact if I
[17:04] have to use my positional authority to accomplish our mission I have already
[17:09] failed as a leader I will continue to work to Foster this environment where
[17:15] our staff feels their true value and worth it is only when that environment is established and maintained that I
[17:23] feel that our staff will be empowered to carry out their duties with Grace and
[17:28] grit and will strive to provide the best possible service to the people we serve
[17:33] every day over the three over the past three and a half years we have seen how frail that relationship is with the
[17:42] community we must always work hard to ensure that we hold ourselves accountable to the very people that have
[17:48] graciously entrusted us with their permission to be
[17:54] policed think about that responsibility for a moment they have blessed us with
[18:00] the ability for us to police them with that responsibility or with that
[18:06] Authority comes a great deal of responsibility we must continue to treat
[18:12] people with dignity and respect oftentimes when they don't deserve it but we also have to maintain lines of
[18:19] accountability we are blessed to have a wonderful working relationship with the community thanks to the generations of R
[18:27] County Sheriffs de ities Corrections Officers dispatchers and support staff
[18:32] that have come before us I don't take that lightly every
[18:37] single day I think about my predecessors and what they brought to this office and what a true responsibility it is to make
[18:45] sure that we are not going to fail on our watch we must see ourselves always
[18:51] ambass to as ambassadors to the community that have a vested interest
[18:56] for the future success of our own families to ensure that we are providing a measure of Safety and Security to our
[19:04] community We Walk The Thin Blue Line which represents the line between Civility and
[19:11] Chaos Society seems to be boiling into flash points clashes between protesters
[19:17] and the police it's happening all over the world today it's happening within our own
[19:22] communities another active shooter last night claiming the life of so many
[19:29] the future success of our society is dependent upon the Guardians that will be willing to stand that line for the
[19:36] greater good of others with that comes the pain hurt and
[19:43] Brokenness that's why it is so important to invest wisely in our families we will
[19:49] need their support some days just to find the strength and courage to put the uniform back on you are starting your
[19:56] hero's journey within the the right County Sheriff's Office I ask each of you as the sun sets on your career
[20:03] someday what will your legacy look like in closing I am honored to be your
[20:12] Sheriff to lead this organization with the dedicated men and women who do a
[20:17] difficult job to serve our community making it a better place to work live and raise our families folks look around
[20:25] for a minute you are not walking this journey
[20:32] alone thank you all very much for being here today and coming today to support these folks to support our office and
[20:40] the job that we do you can tell every night you turn on the news this job is becoming more difficult by the day and I
[20:47] would I would say that our job has never been uh the way it is today with the
[20:52] flas points in society and the constant clashes I feel very blessed to be
[20:58] serving in a community that does value the work that we do we enjoy broad
[21:03] support um and I think that it's the way that we choose to police it is the
[21:08] generations that have come before us that have held that line of accountability and given the best
[21:14] possible service that we can provide being vested ambassadors to the
[21:20] community and that's how we continue to to strive and we continue to set up the
[21:26] future successes for the next generation that comes after us so thank you all
[21:31] very much and thank you all for being here [Applause]
[21:42] today after I found out real quick Brian I don't mean to cut you off after I
[21:47] found out that sheriff hoso was going to join us today I uh pulled some
[21:52] statistics and I thought that he may find this interesting when when I say
[21:58] Generations that come after us so keep in mind now 2000 I think he's been
[22:04] retired now for 23 and a half years 26 people that he hired still
[22:13] remain employed by our office four Corrections Officers two clerical
[22:21] staff three communications officers and 17 licensed deputies including today

[22:39] jail if you want to Heckle Mr sa silvernagle the next time you see him he
[22:44] is the longest tenear employee of the wri County Sheriff's Office starting in

[22:56] dedicated service so Sheriff Wasa again thank you very much for being
[23:03] [Applause]

[34:34] the actual badge pinning right after that so we will
[34:41] modify we only we we only do these twice a year we're getting better at
[34:49] it we'll do the closing oh so like we did last you last year yes okay I like
[34:56] that idea yep we're going to let Sergeant triplet take

[35:15] probably my nerves get to me but apologize how many years in 26 26 you
[35:21] did just fine Brian
[35:29] Command Staff you guys can go ahead and be seated um so after 26 years of service sometimes you forget things um
[35:35] we're going to do it how we did it last year which is we didn't do the official pinning what we're going to invite you
[35:41] to do is after everything is done bring your family up over to here where we're going to have a flag set up and we'll
[35:47] get some pictures of the pin being badged on your shirt at that point because when we've tried to do it in the
[35:53] past we get so backlogged and stuff because sometimes people get get pricked with the pins or don't know how they
[35:59] work or whatnot so after we uh are done here today please go up and uh get your picture taken with uh the flag and
[36:06] getting pinned will kind of help that process out as we have in the past okay

[38:25] remarks again thank you all for being here again
[38:32] folks make sure that we are investing wisely in our family time there will be
[38:38] a time where we are going to become dependent upon their support and encouragement to keep doing what we're
[38:45] doing but always remember also that you are not alone in this you are part of a
[38:50] larger group a larger family that will help and support you through through everything that we face and at the end
[38:56] of the day we don't know what the future holds uh but we we do know that when we
[39:02] stick together and we do it together and rely on one another uh that we will
[39:07] always get through it so thank you all very much uh for being here and families
[39:12] thank you again for being here showing your support for our people greatly
