[5:44] today it feels uh like these days I can [5:47] talk unscripted for about 6 hours and [5:49] we'd have to order pizza in for [5:51] everyone this is a really cool moment [5:54] and a great opportunity for us to [5:55] Showcase what separates the right County [5:57] Sheriff's Office from other agents [5:59] agencies across the state of Minnesota [6:02] and uh even probably across our nation [6:05] and so I'm going to stay on script [6:07] because that message is is important and [6:09] I think that uh you will all learn uh [6:13] what it what it will become becoming a [6:16] family member of the Ray County [6:17] Sheriff's Office so thank you all for [6:20] being here today this ceremony gives us [6:23] the opportunity to welcome our newest [6:24] members and to meet their families to [6:27] honor them and introduce all of you to [6:30] the right County Sheriff's Office family [6:32] first of all before I get started do we [6:34] have any military in here former or [6:39] current please [6:42] stand thank you very much for your [6:45] [Applause] [6:49] service any former or current law [6:52] enforcement outside of the right County [6:53] Sheriff's [6:57] Office please stand [7:00] [Applause] [7:05] and how about any corrections we're two [7:07] for [7:08] two any current or former Corrections [7:10] Officers hey thank you very [7:14] [Applause] [7:17] much you never know even in a room like [7:20] this who you're sitting next to so thank [7:22] you very much for your service first of [7:25] all I'd like to start with a couple of [7:27] thank yous thank you to my Command Staff [7:29] for being being here today uh Kristen it [7:32] it's no small feat to set up a room like [7:34] this and get everything organized and [7:36] put together my assistant Kristen truly [7:38] has a heart of service to you all and to [7:42] this office and none of these things [7:43] would be possible without her so thank [7:46] you very [7:49] much six years ago when I was sworn [7:53] in I said that I told all of our staff [7:56] at that time that the fight was not [7:58] inside the Four Walls of the r County [8:01] Sheriff's Office it was and remains my [8:04] priority to Foster an environment where [8:06] our team feels valued appreciated and [8:09] respected I am blessed with the command [8:11] staff that shares the vision they work [8:13] tirelessly to keep our office running [8:15] smooth I'd also like to thank the honor [8:18] guard you guys look great did a [8:19] fantastic job today custodians uh again [8:24] it takes a lot of hands to make [8:25] something like this happen and so I saw [8:28] my wife walk in a little bit ago Tammy [8:31] where are [8:32] you thank you very much for being here [8:36] your support and encouragement has [8:39] always been welcomed and needed so thank [8:41] you for being [8:43] here last but certainly not least to our [8:46] newest members and your families thank [8:49] you all for [8:50] coming I recognize that there will come [8:53] a time that I call upon each of you to [8:56] put yourselves In Harm's Way and you [8:58] will be forced to to make a withdraw [9:00] from your family Bank my message has [9:03] been consistent to our staff invest in [9:06] your families good Lord willing our [9:09] families will be with us long after our [9:12] career has ended families we need your [9:15] support and encouragement to get through [9:17] those bad days take advantage of your [9:20] time off and invest [9:23] wisely make frequent deposits into your [9:26] family Bank there have been many times [9:29] through throughout my career that I've [9:30] been forced to look at my own priorities [9:32] in life and [9:34] re-evaluate during a homicide [9:36] investigation I nearly missed my [9:38] daughter's 12th birthday I would have [9:40] had hell at home had I not been there [9:43] but it was hell at work leaving for an [9:45] hour and a half that afternoon but you [9:47] have to make priorities too and it seems [9:50] to be a moving Target as to what those [9:53] priorities look like but always remember [9:55] your family is steadfast invest in your [9:58] family [10:00] I've been blessed to have the loving and [10:02] support the love and support of my [10:04] family during some of the most difficult [10:06] times that support has never wavered and [10:08] has always been needed we need to take [10:11] care of one another and I stand [10:12] committed to make all of you my number [10:15] one priority no one stands alone in this [10:18] family some people have asked me what [10:21] the secret to success is within the [10:23] right County Sheriff's Office it comes [10:24] down to four things that I expect from [10:27] everyone before I say these I will just [10:30] mention it's not [10:32] wording note worth it is worth [10:37] noting see don't go off script do not go [10:41] off [10:43] script we have not hired a corrections [10:45] officer in over a year and I think that [10:49] that says something about the special [10:52] circumstances that we have going here at [10:55] the right County Sheriff's Office we [10:57] have remained fully staffed and it seems [10:59] like every year this is a good problem [11:02] to have this group of new employees new [11:05] team members continues to get smaller [11:08] and smaller so I feel very blessed to be [11:11] in the situation that we are uh that [11:14] we're in but I think that's because of [11:16] the the environment that we continue to [11:19] Foster so at all times back to my four [11:22] things at all times be legal be ethical [11:26] be a good partner and treat everyone [11:28] with dignity and respect we are all part [11:31] of something much bigger than ourselves [11:33] on duty and off duty we represent the [11:35] right County Sheriff's Office and the [11:37] Greater Community of law enforcement we [11:40] have a vested interest in the future [11:41] success of our community if we are going [11:44] to remain above reproach we should [11:47] conduct ourselves [11:49] accordingly if you all conduct [11:51] yourselves legal ethical and treat [11:54] people with dignity and respect I will [11:56] always defend you I know that it is an [11:59] unfair expectation but I need you to be [12:03] kind compassionate caring and [12:07] empathetic but when those circumstances [12:10] call for it I need you to become a [12:13] warrior but just as quick as you flip [12:16] that switch when those circumstances [12:19] change I need you to switch back to the [12:23] kind compassionate caring empathetic [12:25] role model that our community deserves [12:29] I have often defined leadership as [12:31] having the ability to encourage and [12:33] Inspire others to reach their full [12:34] potential whatever that is within the [12:38] right County Sheriff's Office you do not [12:39] have to be a supervisor to be a leader [12:42] in fact if I must use my positional [12:45] authority to accomplish a mission I have [12:47] already failed as a leader I will [12:50] continue to work to Foster this [12:52] environment where our staff feels their [12:54] true value and worth it is only when [12:57] that environment is established and Main [12:59] maintained I feel our staff will feel [13:01] empowered to carry out their duties with [13:03] Grace and grit and will strive to [13:06] provide the best possible service to the [13:08] people we serve every day over the past [13:11] four and a half years we have seen how [13:13] frail and fragile our relationship with [13:15] the community is we must always work [13:18] hard to ensure that we hold ourselves [13:20] accountable to the very people that have [13:22] graciously usted us with their [13:25] permission to be policed think about [13:28] that for for a moment and the [13:30] responsibility that carries our [13:31] communities give us permission to be [13:34] policed and that comes with a great [13:36] responsibility in our part we are [13:38] blessed to have wonderful relationships [13:40] with our community thanks to the [13:42] generations of R County Sheriffs [13:44] deputies Corrections Officers [13:47] dispatchers and support staff that have [13:49] come before us we must see ourselves as [13:52] ambassadors to the community that have a [13:54] vested interest for the future success [13:57] of our families to ensure that we are [13:59] providing a measure of Safety and [14:01] Security to our [14:03] communities We Walk The Thin Blue Line [14:06] which represents the line between [14:07] Civility and [14:09] Chaos Society seems to be boiling into [14:12] flash points clashes between protesters [14:14] and police the future success of our [14:18] society is dependent upon the Guardians [14:21] that will be willing to stand that line [14:22] for the greater good of others with that [14:25] comes the pain hurt and Brokenness [14:28] that's why it is so important to invest [14:30] wisely into your families we will need [14:33] their support some days just to find the [14:36] strength and the courage to put the [14:37] uniform back on the next day you are [14:40] starting your hero's journey with the [14:42] right County Sheriff's Office I ask each [14:45] of you as the sun sets on your career [14:47] someday to ask yourselves what will your [14:50] legacy look like in closing I am honored [14:54] to be your sheriff and I am honored to [14:56] lead an organization with the dedicated [14:58] men and women who do a difficult job to [15:00] serve our community making it a better [15:03] place to work live and raise our [15:06] families look around here [15:09] folks you guys aren't on this journey [15:12] alone we're all in this [15:14] together before I close in a few minutes [15:17] I am going to have them take their oath [15:20] of office we've done it out in a in a [15:23] official capacity uh between them and I [15:25] and my office but I'm going to read [15:28] They're Taking the same oath today that [15:30] they did at that time when I was elected [15:32] Sheriff we kind of relooked at [15:34] everything that we were doing and uh we [15:37] composed a new o oath of office because [15:40] as Mike said to our mission statement [15:42] who has been a which has been a part of [15:44] our organization since [15:46] 2002 uh two or three uh it's an [15:49] important thing of what we do but our [15:50] oath of office should Define us and it's [15:54] how we carry out and conduct ourselves [15:56] day in and day out and I think in part [15:58] that that's what continues to also [16:00] separate us from from others we have [16:04] some things going on really well here [16:06] and I want to make sure that we continue [16:08] that so I am dependent upon hiring [16:11] really good people and I talk publicly [16:14] all the time and it's such a blessing [16:15] for me because I don't have to make [16:17] anything up I really talk about the [16:19] blessings of the great people that I'm [16:21] surrounded by so thank you all for being [16:24] here uh and joining our family and thank [16:27] you all for the way that you can conduct [16:29] yourselves uh before I close I just want [16:33] to give a special thank you to a couple [16:35] of people here uh in the front row it [16:39] shouldn't go without saying uh [16:41] Lieutenant storth retired in [16:45] 2004 he was my criminal investigation [16:48] division Lieutenant at the time of his [16:50] retirement and uh it goes to show 20 [16:54] years later he's still involved and [16:57] still sees the importance of supporting [16:59] all of you and what you're doing and the [17:01] relationships that we build 20 30 years [17:04] ago now for some of us are still there [17:07] today and uh I'm really honored that the [17:11] sheriff that hired me back in 1997 is [17:15] also here Don HOSA thank you very much [17:18] for for being here one day I'm keeping a [17:21] list of all of those that I've hired and [17:24] one day I want to see one of you be [17:27] Sheriff if any of you thought that far [17:30] ahead what does that look like in your [17:32] careers if you would have asked me back [17:35] in two in [17:36] 1997 if I aspired to be the sheriff of [17:40] Ray County I would have said you're [17:42] crazy when when sheriff hempa took a [17:45] chance hiring a kid from North Dakota to [17:48] be a right County deputy sheriff I [17:50] thought I hit the Pinnacle of my [17:53] life I didn't tell him this at the time [17:55] but I would have done it for free I was [17:58] so so excited to have this job and uh it [18:03] has been a true blessing part of the [18:05] motivation that I had running for [18:07] Sheriff six or seven years ago now was [18:10] to ensure that we continued to provide [18:13] those same opportunities for everyone [18:15] that comes through our doors as the [18:16] third largest sheriff's office in the [18:18] state I think we have immense [18:20] opportunities for our people it's not a [18:22] place just to start a career and get [18:24] some experience and move on this place [18:26] really can
