Wright County receives clean audit, addresses rising insurance costs
The Wright County Board of Commissioners received a clean audit opinion for 2024 and heard updates on rising insurance costs during their regular meeting Tuesday.
Clifton Larson Allen presented the county's annual audit results, issuing an unmodified opinion - the best rating possible. The audit found one material weakness related to various adjustments made during the audit process, but noted no significant deficiencies in 2024. The county spent $15.2 million in federal expenditures and had no material weaknesses in its single audit of major federal programs.
Garrett Claybel, executive director of the Minnesota Counties Intergovernmental Trust, reported significant increases in reinsurance costs affecting county insurance premiums. Property reinsurance costs have risen substantially over the past three years due to weather events, inflation and construction cost increases. Despite rate increases, MCIT returned $3.5 million in workers compensation dividends to members in 2024 and will return $1.5 million in 2025.
The board approved several resolutions, including accepting donations for the Parks and Recreation Challenge and authorizing agreements for the County Road 137 project. The county's License Center reported administering more than 10,000 driving exams since opening in 2022, with new legislation taking effect Friday allowing unlimited retesting at third-party locations.
Commissioners recognized retiring Health and Human Services employee Cecilia, who served the county for 29 years in various departments. The Child Support Department was also recognized for exceeding state averages in all performance measures, collecting $5.99 for every dollar spent compared to the state average of $2.65.

It is our governance letter... It is five pages, very boilerplate... there were no disagreements with management.
You can think of MCIT as your insurer, but we like to think of ourselves as being a lot more than an insurer really as a partner.
