[0:00] the city of Chanhasson manages
[0:01] approximately 119 miles of streets and
[0:03] their upkeep we review and grade all
[0:06] city roads every three years based on
[0:08] funding we prioritize what roads need
[0:10] work and schedule construction and
[0:12] repairs this is our pavement management
[0:16] plan one technique we use to
[0:19] rehabilitate our city roads is
[0:20] reconstruction reconstruction is when
[0:22] the entire road is completely removed
[0:25] and replaced this can include replacing
[0:28] the existing asphalt pavement aggregate
[0:31] base curb and gutter and sidewalk or
[0:33] trails if not previously present a sand
[0:36] subsection drain tile curb and gutter
[0:39] and sidewalk may be installed during
[0:42] reconstruction public utilities such as
[0:44] sewer and water are inspected for
[0:45] replacement we use this construction
[0:47] technique when the existing pavement
[0:49] shows significant signs of deterioration
[0:51] and generally scores below 40 on the
[0:54] overall condition index a zero to 100
[0:56] point scale we use to rate a road's
[0:58] health although we use the OCI to
[1:00] address road rehabilitation keep in mind
[1:02] that other engineering factors may play
[1:05] a role in the selection process similar
[1:07] to full depth reclamation a technique we
[1:09] covered in a previous video in this
[1:10] series this method is used when roads
[1:12] are in need of substantial rehab unlike
[1:15] a full- depth reclamation reconstruction
[1:17] involves improvements such as utility
[1:19] reconstruction subbase and subgrade
[1:22] replacement the addition of a curb or
[1:24] gutter and other safety improvements in
[1:27] short reconstruction is necessary when a
[1:29] road reaches the end of its life cycle
[1:31] this type of repair represents a
[1:32] significant investment in the future of
[1:34] Chanhasson's transportation network once
[1:36] complete the cycle of maintenance and
[1:38] rehabilitation begins again that's
[1:41] reconstruction the rehabilitation method
[1:43] we use to renew a road when it reaches
[1:45] the end of its life cycle for more
[1:47] information about why we choose certain
[1:48] repair techniques over others an
[1:50] overview of the construction process and
[1:52] less intensive repair techniques make
[1:54] sure to check out the other videos in
[1:56] our pavement management plan series for
