Chanhassen's City Engineering Department outlined its systematic approach to maintaining the city's 119 miles of streets during an educational presentation on the municipality's Pavement Management Plan.

The city uses an Overall Condition Index rating system to evaluate road conditions and determine appropriate repair methods. Roads scoring 90 or higher receive only minor maintenance, while those rating between 80-90 need basic repairs like crack sealing or pothole filling. Lower scores trigger more intensive interventions, with ratings below 40 requiring complete reconstruction.

The engineering department conducts field reviews of city streets in three-year cycles, dividing Chanhassen into three geographical areas for systematic evaluation. The rating system helps staff determine whether roads need basic seal coating, mill and overlay rehabilitation, full depth reclamation or complete reconstruction.

Repair methods range from seal coating, which extends road life by approximately seven years, to mill and overlay techniques that provide 15 years of additional service. Full depth reclamation involves pulverizing existing asphalt and underlying gravel to create recycled road base, while reconstruction represents a complete overhaul including drainage systems and potential road widening.

City staff analyze condition ratings annually and prioritize projects within available funding. The engineering department plans additional presentations covering the planning and design process, construction details and intensive repair techniques.
