Somerset Elementary School recently garnered recognition from the West St. Paul-Mendota Hts.-Eagan School District board for its 8th Annual Kindness Day, an event that has become a cornerstone of the school's culture. Held last month, the day-long initiative saw students engaging in various service projects, demonstrating a strong commitment to community engagement over traditional holiday celebrations.

During the school board meeting focused on student recognition, Dean of Students Jesselyn Carcinia introduced a group of Somerset Elementary pupils who shared their experiences and the impact of Kindness Day. Second-grader Jack, fourth-grader Penelopey, kindergartner Audrey, and third-graders Violet and Theo eloquently described how the annual event encourages selflessness and collaboration among their peers.

Students highlighted several key service projects undertaken during the event. Among these efforts were the creation of handmade birthday cards for individuals who might not otherwise receive them, and contributions to local organizations such as 'People Serving People' and the 'Animal Humane Society'. These initiatives provided tangible ways for students to make a positive difference beyond the school walls.

The collaborative spirit among students was a recurring theme in their presentation. Children moved between different stations, working together on various tasks, which several students identified as a particularly rewarding aspect of the day. This teamwork underscores the event's success in building a cohesive and empathetic student body.
