Officer Adam Peterson of the Lakeville Police Department demonstrated a community-focused approach to law enforcement during a recent patrol shift, prioritizing driver education over issuing citations.

Peterson, who has served with Lakeville for approximately one year after 10 years with a local county agency, conducted traffic stops for Minnesota Move Over Law violations during his patrol. The law requires drivers to move over or slow down when emergency vehicles are stopped on the roadside.

During one traffic stop, Peterson explained his enforcement philosophy to a driver who failed to move over for his patrol vehicle. "For me a lot of it's education. I don't write a lot of tickets," Peterson said. "If you get a ticket from me it's either you haven't learned from past contacts or experience or you have a disregard for law and public safety."

The officer also conducted a field sobriety investigation during the patrol after detecting signs of possible impairment during a traffic stop. Peterson administered a preliminary breath test and determined the driver was not impaired.

Peterson described his role as both challenging and rewarding, noting that law enforcement provides opportunities to make positive impacts on community members' lives. He emphasized that effective policing requires balancing education and enforcement to promote public safety.
