Uh looks like land and facilities. Uh Mr. Stark. >> All right. Yes, we had a lot going on. A lot has been happening at the softball fields. We They started uh repairs of the north field. The north field, correct? On August 5th, uh they had issues in the past with the both fields actually. Um I think it's a low lying I think it got moisture in there in winter. A lot of frost, so it lifts up the fence posts. So, especially the north field, uh the fence posts were lifting up, leaving a pretty big gap between the bottom of the field and the fence. And also, it was a few feet higher than the south field. They wanted to fix the gap and match the fence height, so they started that work on the 5th. Uh it should be done by now. And I think they also replaced the bottom 8 ft of the backstop of the north field, too, to fix curling of the bottom of the backstop there. And then they also had gone out and got some quotes to put up a netting systems, so we included the baseball field for both the north and south field. It came back quite a bit. I mean, it's 44,000 just for the nets, and then be another 44,000 just to install them. Uh this is something right now I think we'll look maybe doing one netting system, but this is kind of farther in the future and we'll look at putting it on our 10-year facilities plans. And the Crozet football field uh has had a complete redone by now. They found all the siding replaced. Uh all the work and materials were donated donated by Hip. Um Mr. Albert uh did all that, so we're gracious for that. Um some of the windows, I think when they originally installed them, they had the caulking put in the weep holes, so all the windows were damaged, needed to be replaced. So actually Hip went ahead and split the cost with us to get placed two of them, and we split the cost to replace the other two. So again, much appreciation for Hip for that. And then Uh for the uh PAC that we're doing at the center, um they're looking into we're looking into some quotes. This is early stages, and this will be something most likely added to the you know, 10-year plan, but to uh sand down the floors. I think um you know, they like the floors dark. Um I think at one point they tried painting them, and all the paint started chipping up, and then just over time, you know, floors get worn down and um beat down, so they uh we're looking at getting some quotes to sand it all down and stain it a new dark color. But again, that's kind of in the future. And um I'll get us some quotes back on that again. >> I think we've gotten one in, but we'll wait till we have them all before we bring it back to you. >> And then there's also some leaking in the PAC. I think the one of the last big heavy rains, there's probably been a leaking, and we believe it's due We had somebody come out. I can't remember the company, but somebody come out I think last year and did a lot of caulking and sealing around where the roof system is. We don't believe it's the roof system. We believe where some of the joints are. So I think they have come back out. I haven't heard yet, but they came I believe they've come back out or were They're planning to come back out and get up there on the path and try to figure out where that leak is coming from and if they can uh recock and seal the leakage. And then um it came up again at the elementary school playground and I think, you know, it's definitely deteriorating a little quicker than I think we thought. So, I think, you know, I think we're creating I think the principal is going to work with the um PTA over there and kind of get a committee and kind of see where they want to go from here. It's definitely something we can't Who side of definitely >> We did find out today that IEA will come out and do a inspection of it for us to tell us exactly what needs to be done. If there's parts that can be replaced versus redoing everything. So, um we found that out today. >> Okay. And I brought up in meetings too looking at it and I think uh um this case with the out too. A lot A lot of the main structure looks fine. It's a lot of these little platforms. If you somehow we could uh figure out how to replace just platforms themselves cuz a lot of those are just cast iron and then there's kind of a flat not plastic but a rubber coat put on it and the rubber coat's peeled off. Like cast iron rusting and you know, just open rusting. Brackets are breaking, but the main structures I think a lot of these are pretty good shape and I think they could be used uh you know, if that's the path you want to go down. That's all I have for lighting facilities unless I missed something big. Yeah, the only other little note I have is I know that we we lost the lights at the um JB Field, but as of now only has any issue. I think they moved things up like an hour ahead and I don't usually have issues with not having those lights. So. So, that's all I have for lighting facilities. And I can jump straight into policy if you'd like me to or >> I had a quick question on the netting. Is it Is it Do we need those for safety reasons or what Why what what are the purpose of those? >> The uh the softball field nets? >> [clears throat] >> Yes, that was a It was a safety item for all fly balls and things like that going into the crowd. Um and whether you're focused on one game or the other, you might not know that ball is coming over from the opposite side of the field. >> And I believe this came up to kind of a a challenge for us is that just due to where the and cuz the concession stand and announcing stand is, you know, once we install them when we permanently install them where it's other places, you know, they have it set up to where you pull down the winner, so there's less wear and tear on them. Something else to consider for future costs because once we they go forward with this, they're kind of stuck in place and But I we did discuss the safety issue and we did discuss that we think one would be, you know, suffice for, you know, both fields. Not necessarily put two up for both >> And then on the on the rough system, is that a like a is that like a third year warranty or something like that? Is that something that you >> The roof does, but the clock controls do not. >> And you know, I brought that our asset to and they don't think it's something to be doing with the warranty system. They think it's just what those drawings are and You know, I think he said just a year. It wasn't too long ago. It's less than a year it looks to me. >> [clears throat] >> A company had come out and done the clocking. >> Just this summer. >> Okay, so it was very recently. >> Any other questions for Mr. Steiner on length facilities? Okay, if you want to go ahead and file C and D. >> So, policy there's a lot to review. I just want to emphasize the fact that, you know, we we belong to NSBA and NSBA goes over all these policies. They are always updating the policies. They're always validating that all the policies, you know, meet legal standards, meet what the state intends and we, you know, 99% of all our policies strictly match. So, vast majority of the changes come from NSBA updating it to match things. Uh the only two things I really was going to focus on was policy 709 I was reading through and I was confused reading it um but our great superintendent corrected me. But it does strictly say, and is something new, is that we need we are in charge of teaching children the law that nobody under the age of 15 should be on an e-bike. And nobody under the age of 12 should be on a scooter, e-scooter. And when I first read it, I thought it implied that that was our policy that no child under 15 should be on an e-bike at all. It is law, so they shouldn't be. But for our sake and our school sake, the policy district states that we are in charge of teaching them. And I think our superintendent has done a great job sending out an email to all parents. And there's a she sent a letter in the DCI to strictly say, you know, you know, teaching the community that nobody should be Nobody under 15 should be on an e-bike. And everybody under 18 who's riding a still has to have a helmet and they're not supposed to have a uh riders unless the bike's specifically designed to have a rider on it, which We had a lot of discussion about this because I think you mentioned that most superintendents in other districts haven't had really an issue with it, but uh I think it is something that, you know, could come up in the future as, you know, more and more kids ride these bikes. What happens when, you know, somebody's hurt bad on our property? Um so I would encourage all the board members to at least read over this policy. Uh Uh sorry. Our committee's recommendation right now is just to leave the policy as it is. You know, we're doing what the law says. We're teaching kids, we're informing kids. And we kind of think right now it's not in our interest or is our role to enforce this. And it should be hard to enforce. >> piece on top of that is grades 1 through 3 always get their bus training. They know how to hop out of the back of the bus. That's been around forever. Grades 4 through 8, it's very clear that they need to get education on e-bikes and scooters, [clears throat] things like that. Um I'm going to get Principal Larson a lot of credit on this. He came up with the idea, let's implant that right into our physical education classes. And so that's where those kids will get that part of the policy. They'll actually learn about safety in that. And it matched up perfectly. So Arson thought that was a great idea. I think we did, too, that that just matched up so well. Yeah. >> Now, you sent out that communication to the parents. Have you had any feedback from them at all? >> I have. I've actually been really surprised by parents that And I believe them. They really didn't know. They They just thought, "Oh, this is just a bike. Are you kidding me?" You know, I They just didn't know. I think they knew about the helmets, and that's something we need to get kids doing because I don't want to see anyone hurt. I think they also believe that the reason why we're seeing so many is we have a great sidewalk system. A lot of these other schools don't have that. I mean, you might be on a road going out to the school. Versus here, we Our community can really get over here quite easily on a lot of these really great wide sidewalks. So, the feedback I've only had three, but they all were a little bit surprised. Like, I had no idea. Is my child going to be in trouble? Well, if the law enforcement sees you, and they've been educated after they've had the class, I mean, you know, right now we're only focusing on education. Yep. >> And then the other not too big, but on 721, the procurement policy. I think this policy has been updated quite a bit. Like I said, NSBA updates policies. And before it was more strictly geared towards federal procurement policies, but I think they're changing to kind of incorporate state and federal. And it had one section on it that required us to define the purchase amount that the superintendent and the business manager manager can make without the board's approval. And I talked to the superintendent, and I think our understanding is the vast majority of procurements that happen throughout the school year are all funded all funded Sorry, I can't talk. All under the budget that we approved as a school board. So, typically, most things don't come up to us for a vote. Uh like you know, if we had a tragic engine failure on the bus and we had to run by a bus off-season, I don't know where that would be a pretty big purchase. That would be probably over $50,000 that we have granted to the business manager or superintendent. So, it would be something that come to the board and that's when the board would approve it, is my understanding. So, I think it's worthwhile at least kind of reading up for it based on section 103.1, section 4.82 specifically calls out what we as a board define. And we agreed as a policy committee that we do $50,000 because that is pretty standard. Uh but, yes, look at that. This is a first read. And um just the section before that having read reading number two, it talks about how the board is supposed to approve all procurements. And then I I think we're still following that. But, it's due to the budget process. Due to the budget now knowing when it comes to the budget process if it would be, you know, just get the board more involved and we kind of break down No, no, no, I realize everything can't be line itemed. You may have some of the bigger purchases that we have late in the year. I understand >> Or these adding into the finance committee, those kinds of things. >> Something along those lines. >> So, this $50,000 would be for emergency type type of that items that aren't getting the regular budget. >> Yes. Well, I mean, something I guess just something that wasn't planned and then all of a sudden it comes up and the superintendent can make a $30,000 purchase. She would already get We're We're going to approve that she has that right. She doesn't have to come to the board. But, you know, something came up that, you know, $200,000 on a bus outside of the budget cycle, then that has to come to the board for board approval. >> And that makes sense. Then it oftentimes shifts. It redoes the budget as well. >> We have to have a revised budget. >> But, look look look look at the two big point policy things that we wanted to touch on today. >> Thank you. >> That's good. >> So, I can bring it up there all the time. >> Yeah. >> You need that. Hearing none, we'll move on to student activities and sports. >> We had our meeting today at 4:00 and the athletic director provided a good overview of what's happening. They had a fall sports sign-up at the beginning of August. That was very well attended and had a great turnout. Um a lot of excitement heading into fall and the beginning of the season here and of activities. Today was the first day of fall sports. So you can hear the volleyball teams down there already. You will be seeing a lot more activity um here in the fields. Uh one new club that he mentioned is a cultural club. They'll be doing some murals and um that's also exciting about that as well. Um at our next board meeting, um Brock will have kind of that participation numbers. We'll be looking at what we're looking at in last year around 50%. So just to really see the participation in clubs, activities, and sports. We will share that on our next meeting. >> Do you know how far like it does that just get analyzed at the high school level or does that go to the middle school level? Do you know how far back that is? >> About 12 historically. >> Oh, so it's about 12. >> Yeah, cuz that's when they can first start. >> Yeah, high school level. >> Yeah, junior high and after middle school. >> You said 90%? >> What did you say the most was? >> Um close to 90%. >> So it's higher than the middle school. >> Yeah, she she said it was awesome. >> All right, cuz I'm yeah, I've used it in my It was very minor things, but it it was very easy to fix whatever you needed. >> He said parents were just taking their kids physical and literally screenshotting it and uploading it. It's just a great >> And that information is saved so when they go sign up for that next activity it's already in And the communication with the the students and the coaches too that can be used on the app too. That has been a good process. I just want to I'm just asking to get this completed yet. Whatever whichever way you feel you put kids on this app that's fine. So, you know, trying to get boosters and all boosters and some of the chairs that don't get brought to us or help out to support all that. >> So, you still get the costs the gate. So, it's actually a revenue maker for the district. >> Who is actually the >> And just a neat experience for both of you guys to have. It's already kind of crazy, so why not add more crazy to it? We will record that and so if anyone wants to see the presentation, there's there's going to be no opportunity for people not to know to get out and vote and those kinds of things. So if you hear of any more opportunities, please let me know. We are having a record number of foreign exchange students, six of them. I'm actually really proud of that. I think that's a great opportunity for our kids. You don't see other schools huge schools don't have six students coming in. It tells you that our families are opening their doors and saying welcome and they they add a lot to our school dynamics. A lot of them are going to be playing athletics and activities and how fun is that? Some of them have never played, you know, they think football and which one are you which one are we calling football? That kind of thing. It it's fun. They completely understood, and and they will just go down to the fairgrounds. Obviously, there's vendors there and things like that. So, we are a school. It is school grounds. So, my recommendation to you is to not approve the request that Mr. Finn has put in to allow alcohol being consumed there. But, it is the ultimate choice is up to you.
