StoryCommunity Health and Wellness Center Design Review

Bloomington plans health center design review, civic engagement events

The Bloomington City Council is moving forward with several community initiatives this February, including a public design review for a new Community Health and Wellness Center and a civics competition for middle school students.

Meeting date: Jan 29, 2025
Published Jun 14, 2026

Residents will have the chance to weigh in on the design of Bloomington's planned Community Health and Wellness Center at a public review event on Saturday, February 8th. The review will take place at the Blackbox Theater in Bloomington Civic Plaza, where HGA Architects and city staff will present their draft design. Those unable to attend in person can submit feedback online starting that same date.

In a separate civic engagement effort, the city is hosting a Civic Bee Championship for middle school students on Tuesday, February 4th in the council chambers. Mayor Busy will moderate the competition, which tests students' knowledge of civics and government. The event is a collaboration between the League of Women Voters of Bloomington, Bloomington Public Schools, and the city's community outreach division.

The council also highlighted the city's environmental efforts during winter maintenance. Mayor Busy issued a Winter Salt Week Proclamation at the January 27th council meeting to promote responsible use of deicing salt. The city emphasized a decade-long initiative to reduce salt use while maintaining road safety. This includes implementing new technologies on snowplows, such as segmented plow blades and pavement temperature guns that help crews apply salt more efficiently and only when necessary.

These announcements reflect the city's focus on both infrastructure development and community education in the coming weeks.
