The Brooklyn Park City Council approved opening the bid process for a $45 million fire station project during their May 12 meeting, marking a significant infrastructure investment for the growing city.

Fire Chief Sean Conway presented the comprehensive project, which includes not only a new central fire station but also campus site development, training facilities, and an emergency operations center. The 61,000-square-foot facility will replace aging infrastructure and improve response times, with firefighters' quarters moved closer to apparatus bays to reduce emergency response by crucial seconds.

The project represents more than a traditional fire station, incorporating specialized features including cancer reduction initiatives to meet industry health standards, a training facility to reduce the department's current $200,000-$250,000 annual training costs, and an emergency operations center for disaster response. The facility will also include a basement-level evidence storage area and emergency storm shelter.

Council members questioned the project's cost compared to typical fire stations, with representatives from construction manager Kraus Anderson and CNH Architects explaining that the comprehensive scope and current market conditions justify the investment. The facility is designed to serve the community for 40-50 years and will accommodate Brooklyn Park's growing population and service demands.

The council also approved business licenses for Brooklyn Liquors and El Hornito currency exchange services, and addressed Community Development Block Grant fund reallocations totaling approximately $438,000 due to environmental compliance issues with a teen center project. Police Chief Mark Burley presented the department's annual report, highlighting a 35-year low in total crime and continued progress in department diversification.
