The Robbinsdale Area Schools Board approved a contract with Bix Produce Company for fresh produce services during its August 18 meeting, while also conducting the inaugural reading of the district's land acknowledgment honoring Dakota and Ojibway peoples.

The board unanimously approved a one-year contract with Bix Produce Company, with options to extend for up to four additional years. Chief Financial Officer Kristen Hoheisel said the company was selected as the lowest qualified bidder with an estimated annual cost of $275,000, though the base pricing proposal was $193,000. The higher estimate accounts for additional items and varying meal participation throughout the year.

In a historic moment, Board Chair Rita Evans Becker read the district's first land acknowledgment, recognizing the homelands of Dakota and Ojibway peoples. The ceremony included an honor song performed by Nation Wright of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibway and the display of flags representing Minnesota's 11 tribal nations in the boardroom.

The board also approved policy updates, including a contentious second reading of the equity policy (102.1) that passed 4-3 after extensive debate. Some board members sought to send the policy to a work session for further discussion, but that motion failed 3-4.

During the study session, board members engaged in lengthy discussions about eliminating two ad hoc committees focused on safety/security and transportation/facilities. Chair Evans Becker proposed disbanding both committees, citing changed district circumstances and new administrative leadership. However, committee members argued significant work remained unfinished and requested more time to complete their tasks.
