Edina Launches $100,000 Down Payment Loans for Local Workers
The Edina Housing and Redevelopment Authority has created a new pilot program offering up to $100,000 in down payment assistance to help city employees, school staff, and health care workers buy homes in the community they serve.
At a special work session on October 16, Edina officials unveiled the "Edina Heroes" program, a new initiative designed to help essential workers afford homes in a city where housing costs have put homeownership out of reach for many.
The program targets municipal employees, school district workers, and health care professionals who earn at or above the area's median income for families of three or more. To qualify, workers must purchase homes valued at $600,000 or less.
The Housing and Redevelopment Authority has committed $1 million to fund the pilot program. The money comes from the Southdale 2 tax increment financing district, a designated area where property tax revenue is set aside for redevelopment purposes. The Edina Housing Foundation will handle loan administration, with the city's community development department providing oversight.
