Edina Approves New Restaurant, Art Center Gets Permanent Home
The Edina City Council approved plans for a new locally-owned restaurant in the 50th and France district while receiving updates on a major library redevelopment that will house the city's Art Center starting in 2026.
At a special work session on October 16, the Edina Housing and Redevelopment Authority reviewed several community development projects, including approval of the Americana restaurant at 536 France Avenue. Building owner Ryan Bernett is partnering with Chef Daniel Delpra to transform the former Coachina Delbario location into a new dining destination featuring a second-floor addition with a gabled glass conservatory for expanded seating and bar space.
The council granted a parking variance for the project and requested a comprehensive parking study for the entire 50th and France district to support ongoing business growth. City officials expressed enthusiasm about the restaurant's potential impact on the area. "We have been seeing a big moment for 50th and France with dining," one official said. "This is going to be such a huge draw to our district."
Hennepin County broke ground on October 3 for the redevelopment of Southdale Library, which will include a new permanent home for the Edina Art Center on the second floor. The nearly 50-year-old Art Center will gain dedicated studio spaces, flexible classrooms, gallery space for local artists, and community meeting rooms with direct access to the 9M Creek Trail. The project emphasizes sustainability through geothermal energy, solar panels, and native plantings, with completion expected in 2026.
In an unusual agenda item, officials discussed a 25-year botanical experiment at Arnison Acres Park that has successfully grown seven northern pecan trees in Minnesota's cold climate. The city plans to expand pecan cultivation to other parks, with harvested nuts potentially available through the Edina Garden Council's Mother's Day plant sale.
The council also announced a public dedication and open house for the new Fire Station 2 on West 76th Street, scheduled for October 30. The event will run from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and include live demonstrations and family activities, including trick-or-treating.

There is obviously cost savings in the future for it being more environment environmentally friendly as a building as well too. But I think for us it's also the education purpose. So when you have families, when you have children in the space, you can bring nature in the outside of the building, but also the climate initiatives inside the building as well too.
