The Vernon Avenue Highway 100 interchange project continues to face significant delays due to unresolved utility conflicts, project officials said during a bi-weekly update meeting Thursday.

Excel Energy power line issues have stalled construction for three months, with no resolution in sight between the utility company and CP Rail, according to project representatives. The power line was found to be in a different location than shown on project plans and was struck during construction. Both parties are working on permits and agreements, but no construction progress has been made in the affected area.

"I'm having major concerns, major impacts to schedule and cost are coming and we don't even know what that is yet," a project representative said during the meeting. The delays could affect the entire $20 million project timeline and budget.

Meanwhile, other aspects of the project are progressing. Bridge girders for the Highway 100 overpass are scheduled for installation in early September, with overnight operations planned over four nights. The northbound on-ramp from 50th Street closed July 28 and will remain closed through fall to allow construction of ramp realignments and noise walls.

Traffic impacts are expected to worsen in September with additional ramp closures planned, including westbound off-ramps and the northbound exit to Grandview. The closures coincide with the start of the school year August 25, which will add to congestion on detour routes including Benton Avenue.
