Adina implements 3% fee for card utility payments
The City of Adina will begin charging a 3% convenience fee for credit and debit card payments on utility bills starting Sept. 1, Mayor Jim Hland announced Wednesday.
The fee applies to all card payments made through the city's online billing software Invoice Cloud, by phone, in person or through autopay arrangements. Debit card transactions are also subject to the charge.
Hland said the fee is designed to recover costs the city pays to card payment processors, which totaled nearly $77,000 in 2024 for utility billing alone. The Utility Department processed more than 24,500 card payments last year, with processing fees currently absorbed by taxpayers through the city budget.
Residents can avoid the convenience fee by paying with checks, money orders or by setting up automatic bank account payments through Bank Pay or ACH transfers. Payment options and instructions for setting up Invoice Cloud accounts are available at adinaamn.gov/utility-billing.
The city plans to gradually implement convenience fees across all departments to recover card processing costs. Hland emphasized that the city does not profit from the fees, which are intended solely to offset processing expenses.
