Construction crews completed pouring the entire Highway 100 bridge deck during an overnight operation last week as part of the ongoing Verdon Avenue and Highway 100 interchange project in Edina.

The concrete pour took place over seven hours from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., with approximately 15 trucks per hour delivering concrete to the site. Contractors will begin pouring the concrete median, curb and gutter, and sidewalks on the Highway 100 bridge next week, according to the project's 14th bi-weekly update meeting held October 2.

Ames Construction will begin removing the existing west abutment next week after receiving approval for permits and agreements between the railroad and Excel Energy. The utility company has deenergized power lines in the work area to allow construction to proceed. Excel Energy will install new steel conduit and casing before running a new power line through the area.

Project officials requested schedule and cost options from the contractor to potentially open the Vernon Avenue bridge before the end of the year. If early opening proves unfeasible, alternatives include reopening Gus Young Lane while the bridge remains closed during winter construction. The contractor is expected to provide these options by the end of this week.

The eastbound Highway 100 on and off ramps remain closed and are scheduled to reopen in mid-November. Hennepin County and the city will coordinate approval processes for any schedule or cost changes, with the county handling most funding decisions for the Vernon Avenue bridge portion of the project.
