Minnetonka Advances Sustainability Efforts with Renewed Focus on Business and Residential Programs
City officials outline new strategies for climate action outreach and expand access to renewable energy options for residents and small businesses.
Minnetonka is reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship, with recent discussions at the City Council outlining significant updates to community sustainability initiatives. The city is rolling out targeted outreach programs to help local businesses adopt climate-friendly practices and expanding residential access to solar energy, aiming to foster a more sustainable community footprint.
Supporting Local Businesses in Climate Action
A key pillar of Minnetonka’s sustainability efforts involves engaging the local business community in implementing the city’s Climate Action Plan. Officials emphasized the importance of collaboration across city departments and with local chambers of commerce, including the Wayzata West Metro Chamber and the Minneapolis Regional Chamber, to effectively reach a diverse range of enterprises. The goal is to assist businesses in identifying and adopting energy efficiency measures and other sustainable practices.
I participated in the program previously, the one-stop efficiency shop, and it was an excellent outreach opportunity and appropriately named because I believe that we saw several dozens businesses and talked with the owners or the tenants sometimes in one day’s time.
The outreach strategy acknowledges varying responses from business owners and tenants regarding sustainability actions, with owners generally taking more initiative. Therefore, a crucial focus for future outreach, as highlighted by discussions, will be on smaller businesses that often lack the in-house expertise of larger corporations. This targeted approach aims to provide accessible resources and guidance, helping these businesses overcome barriers to adopting sustainable operations.
One thing that I love about my role is I get to work with a lot of other departments... So it's great to be able to collaborate with other departments across the city to work with an important part of Minnetonka.
