Brooklyn Park Council Honors Slain Speaker Hortman
The Brooklyn Park City Council unanimously approved a memorial resolution Monday honoring Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, who were killed in a June 14 incident in the city.
The resolution recognized Hortman's more than two decades of service in the Minnesota House of Representatives, including her role as the 61st Speaker of the House from 2019 through 2025. The document highlighted her advocacy for Brooklyn Park, including securing funding for the Highway 610 corridor and the Zanewood Recreation Teen Center.
Speaker Hortman had a wonderful legacy and she was in the perfect city for it," said Mayor Hollis Winston during the meeting. "She built that legacy out across the entire state and strengthened voices that maybe in the past had not been heard.
The council also conducted interviews for two vacant positions on the Brooklyn Park Development Corporation board of directors. Four candidates applied for the financial representative and small business representative positions, with voting results to be compiled by June 30.
In other business, the council approved various licenses including an on-sale wine license for C Senior Kitchen LLC and authorized the donation of used police equipment to the Liberian National Police Force. The council also gave first reading approval to an ordinance establishing residency restrictions for level 3 predatory offenders within 500 feet of parks and 1,000 feet of schools, childcare facilities, and places of worship.
