Climate Action Plan (CAP)

Recreation Coordinator Lindholm presented the updated Climate Action Plan, emphasizing its alignment with state emission reduction goals and the Comprehensive Plan, and introducing new elements like a 'climate snapshot', vulnerability assessment, and goals for public health/emergency preparedness and strengthening internal city capacity. Council and staff discussed specific concerns regarding LED streetlight brightness and color temperature, and the integration of sustainability efforts into projects such as Wood Lake, Veterans Park, and a future community center. The discussion also covered further integration of natural resource goals with the Comprehensive and Parks Master Plans, and council ultimately supported moving the CAP forward for approval.

Veteran’s Park Improvements

Recreation Director Huemiller presented the Vision Plan for Veteran's Park improvements, focusing on enhanced accessibility, sustainability, and user experience. Key proposals included a 1.5-mile ADA-accessible, multi-use primary loop trail, consolidation of paved paths, improved neighborhood connections, integration of the Veterans Memorial, and conversion of turf to native prairie. Additional priorities discussed were a new Memorial Garden, reorganization of the pavilion area with crushed stone surfacing and shade trees, and targeted building repairs. Council and staff reviewed aspects such as light levels, trail surfaces, accessibility, and the wildlife viewing platform, expressing general support for the plan.
