Page 1 of 2 Proclamation of the City of Richfield WHEREAS, National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 1st to September 30th, 2026, to promote and celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of the Hispanic and Latin American communities; and WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month originated as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968. In 1988, the week was expanded to a month through legislation sponsored by Representative Esteban Torres, amended by Senator Paul Simon, and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan; and WHEREAS, from groundbreaking achievements in science, art, and politics to the flavors that spice up our kitchens and the music that moves our souls, this month is a tribute to the enduring influence of Hispanic heritage on American history and identity; and WHEREAS, Government institutions, including the U.S. military, take this time to honor Hispanic Americans who have served and continue to serve the nation. For instance, the U.S. Army honors the dedication and achievements of Hispanic soldiers throughout its history. At the same time, the Navy acknowledges the significant roles Hispanic service members have played since the Civil War; and WHEREAS, Notable events, such as the Northwest Arkansas Hispanic Heritage Festival and the El Barrio Latin Jazz Festival in New York, as well as cultural programs hosted by the Smithsonian Institution, showcase the rich traditions and talents within the Hispanic community; and WHEREAS, these observances promote diversity, inclusion, and appreciation for Hispanic service members and their families. Various organizations, cities, and cultural institutions also host public events throughout the month. These include festivals, concerts, art exhibits, film screenings, educational workshops, and heritage celebrations; and WHEREAS, in recent years, digital platforms have also played an increasingly significant role. Initiatives like the Hispanic Star utilize online campaigns and virtual events to highlight Hispanic pride, share success stories, and foster community engagement. Now, THEREFORE, I, Mary Supple, Mayor of Richfield, on behalf of the Richfield City Council, do hereby proclaim that from September 1st, 2026, through September 30th, 2026, as National Hispanic Heritage Month in Richfield, and call on the people of Richfield to observe this period with appropriate programs, activities, and ceremonies, and continue to honor the contributions of our Hispanic American community.
