[0:46] >> We are proud to be the MC's for this [0:48] year's Veterans Day program. From [0:53] all the STEM sparks, thank you for your [0:55] service. [2:06] >> Good morning everyone. [2:10] Thank you for the kind invitation to [2:12] join me today to celebrate and honor the [2:15] women and men who have served our [2:17] country. Respected veterans who are [2:20] watching this assembly on video, thank [2:23] you so much for your commitment to serve [2:25] our nation. We're grateful for the [2:28] freedoms and opportunities that you [2:29] secured for our country, our community, [2:32] and our children. [2:34] If you're a student here at R SEM, you [2:37] may be thinking, well, what can I do to [2:39] show my respect for veterans and honor [2:41] their sacrifices on behalf of our [2:43] nation? [2:45] >> First and foremost, [2:47] you can say thank you and show respect [2:50] for our veterans. [clears throat] That's [2:51] a good place to start. [2:54] >> Secondly, you can study hard so you can [2:56] contribute to our community and nation [2:58] in the future. You can also help others [3:01] right now. [3:04] It's not about things like money. It's [3:07] about things like treating others with [3:09] kindness and respect and giving of your [3:12] time. That might be helping an elderly [3:15] neighbor with their yard work or [3:17] welcoming a new kid to class or even [3:20] holding a door open to someone. [3:23] >> So, I want you to close your eyes for a [3:25] few seconds and think of something you [3:28] can do this week to help out or to be [3:31] kind. [3:40] Okay, now you've all been thinking, so [3:42] you can open your eyes again. And when I [3:45] say go, I want you to turn to a [3:47] classmate and tell them what your plan [3:49] is to be kind or to help somebody. [3:52] Ready? Go. [4:09] 2 [4:14] and [4:15] I heard lots of good ideas being shared. [4:18] So now your attention back here. [4:23] >> You all are so awesome. This is a great [4:25] group to talk to. Lots of adults can't [4:28] get quiet that fast. So, you're doing [4:29] really awesome. Thank you. So, I just [4:33] heard you tell hundreds of small acts [4:35] that you've just thought of and shared [4:37] with your neighbor. And all of that will [4:39] add up to a better community and a [4:42] better nation. [4:44] And finally, please honor our veterans [4:46] by participating in our democracy. [4:49] Speak up and share your ideas in a [4:52] respectful way and listen to other [4:55] people's viewpoints. [4:57] Vote when you're older and encourage [4:59] other people to vote as well. And [5:02] someday, please be on one of our city [5:04] commissions because we need your ideas. [5:07] Our honored veterans served our country [5:09] so you could have freedoms and [5:11] opportunities like being able to go to [5:14] public schools like our STEM. So, let's [5:16] thank them for their service by paying [5:18] it forward and making them proud. Again, [5:22] thank you to all of our veterans. Your [5:24] contributions will never be forgotten. [5:26] Thank you. [5:39] We can never fully repay our debt of [5:41] gratitude to the American service [5:43] members who died in battle or those who [5:45] wound it. We can, however, thank and [5:48] recognize the veterans still living [5:50] today. [5:53] Military careers. Veterans are men and [5:56] women who have served in the military. [5:58] They perform many jobs to serve our [6:01] country. Here are a few of the careers [6:05] military members hold. [6:08] Medic. A medic administerers emergency [6:11] medical care in the field of both combat [6:13] and humanitarian situations such as [6:16] hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. [6:20] Mechanic. A mechanic repairs military [6:23] vehicles like motorbikes, cars, trucks, [6:26] and tanks. Mechanics work at military [6:29] bases and on the front lines. [6:32] >> Pilot. A pilot flies the most advanced [6:36] aircrafts to defend the country and uses [6:38] extraordinary skills to complete [6:40] missions. They deploy around the world [6:43] to wherever there is a need. [6:46] Throughout this nation's history, [6:49] America's soldiers, sailors, airmen, [6:52] marines, and coast guardsmen have [6:55] bravely answered the call to defend our [6:57] freedom, to aid friends and allies, and [7:00] to turn back aggressors. [7:04] This is Fort Snelling National Cemetery [7:06] in Minnesota. Fallen soldiers are buried [7:09] here. Many many families visit the [7:12] cemetery in remembrance of them. [7:16] Many of you have probably been to the [7:18] park before. Next time, check out the [7:21] memorial. [7:25] >> These are pictures of Richfield's [7:27] Veterans Memorial Park. It is one of our [7:29] community's places where we honor our [7:31] veterans. [7:34] >> Our nation honors her sons and daughters [7:36] who answered the call to defend our [7:39] defend a country they never knew and a [7:41] people they never met. Those words apply [7:44] equally to many of our veterans wherever [7:47] they have served, past or present. [7:50] We are here today to honor veterans from [7:54] Coast Guard, [7:56] Army, [7:58] Navy, [7:59] National Guard, [8:01] Air Force, [8:03] Marines. [8:07] Today it is our privilege to say thank [8:09] you to all American veterans to let them [8:11] know we appreciate them for their [8:13] service and honor them for us their [8:15] sacrifices.
