Extension Committee Highlights Youth Council's German Journey, Master Gardener Projects
Olmsted County Extension Committee members reviewed a youth delegation trip to sister city Moosburg and ongoing volunteer work at Graham Park during their latest update.
The Olmsted County Extension Committee delivered an update on county programming this week, spotlighting an international trip by the Rochester Olmsted County Youth Council to Germany and a slate of Master Gardener projects underway at Graham Park.
The youth council delegation traveled to Moosburg, a Bavarian town near Munich that serves as a sister city to Rochester. While there, students toured the site of Stalag 7A, the largest prisoner of war camp in Nazi Germany, which operated in Moosburg during World War II.
Our young people came back with a perspective you simply cannot get from a textbook. Standing at Stalag 7A changed how they understood that history.
The delegation also visited Münster, described during the update as a 'project city' to Rochester and known internationally for its bicycle infrastructure and environmental sustainability work, as well as Saerbeck, a small town recognized for its commitment to renewable energy.
Sustainability lessons abroad
Committee members said the German stops offered potential lessons for Olmsted County and Rochester as both continue to weigh sustainability and transportation planning. Münster's cycling network and Saerbeck's renewable energy efforts were both cited as models worth studying.
Saerbeck is a small community, not unlike many of ours, and they have made renewable energy a defining part of who they are. That is something our students noticed immediately.
