Maplewood City Council Approves Partnership for Affordable Housing
The city collaborates with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity to acquire and rehabilitate existing homes, aiming to increase homeownership for working families.
The Maplewood City Council has formally approved a new partnership with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, launching an innovative Affordable Housing Acquisition and Rehabilitation Program. This initiative is designed to address the critical need for quality, affordable homes in the community while simultaneously revitalizing existing housing stock and fostering homeownership opportunities for working families.
Under the newly established agreement, Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity will acquire aging homes within Maplewood neighborhoods and undertake extensive rehabilitation efforts. These newly revitalized properties will then be made available for purchase by qualified low-to-moderate income households, providing a crucial pathway to homeownership that might otherwise be unattainable due to prevailing market conditions.
Like many communities across the metro, Maplewood wants to ensure that we have quality housing for working families that they can afford. At the same time, we have older homes in our neighborhoods that are in need of reinvestment.
The program's objectives extend beyond simply providing shelter; it seeks to strengthen the social and economic fabric of Maplewood. By supporting families in achieving stable homeownership, the initiative is expected to contribute to neighborhood stability, enhance property values, and reduce the presence of dilapidated properties within the city.
Ultimately, this approach allows us to invest in Maplewood's existing housing stock while creating a path to homeownership for households who might otherwise face barriers to purchasing a home in this community.
