SPPS Students Soar with STEM and Aviation Achievements
Saint Paul Public Schools celebrated student excellence in drone piloting, aviation engineering, and computing, highlighting successful career pathway programs.
Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) students were recognized for their outstanding achievements in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, particularly in aviation and computing, at the Board of Education’s regular meeting on May 19, 2026. The recognitions underscored the district's commitment to career pathways that prepare students for real-world opportunities.
Superintendent Stanley introduced the recognitions, expressing enthusiasm for showcasing student success. Anna Chan, the Career Pathways Coordinator, then presented two students who had achieved Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications for small unmanned aircraft systems.
Taking Flight with Drone Certification
Dave Lee Stow, an 11th-grade student from Humboldt High School, was honored for successfully obtaining his FAA drone certification. His journey through the certification process was a testament to his dedication and the support provided by the district’s programs.
How I felt uh before taking the test was feeling of nervousness and dread. During the test, I felt comfortable with the environment and how official it felt. After taking the test, I felt nervous about the results, and the results came as I, uh, felt proud and accomplished when I found out that I passed.
Stow shared his aspirations to use his certification in future careers, including wildlife biology or agriculture, demonstrating the diverse applications of drone technology. Coach K, who supported Stow, also spoke, emphasizing the importance of celebrating student accomplishments in these emerging fields.
Paving Pathways in Aviation Engineering
Adam Scholl, a junior at Johnson Senior High School, was recognized for his engagement with SPPS aviation programs and his achievement of FAA certification. Scholl highlighted how these programs provided clear direction for his academic and professional journey.
