Shakopee Schools faces staff concerns over West Middle discipline
The Shakopee Public Schools board heard passionate public comment on Tuesday about student behavior and safety issues at West Middle School, with community members urging the board to reconsider the recent termination of a veteran teacher. The meeting also approved district donations and updated the community on school safety improvements.
During the August 25 meeting, multiple speakers—including current and retired teachers, parents, and students—described what they characterized as widespread misbehavior at West Middle School and insufficient administrative consequences. They specifically called for the reinstatement of a 20-year veteran teacher, identified as Mr. Wer or Winkler, who was recently terminated. One speaker, Tara Wagner, told the board: "This is just a sample of the hundreds of obscene and dangerous things that are known to be tolerated by administrators at West Middle School." Another community member, Molly Russell, directly addressed the board's oversight role, saying: "Your responsibility is to independently determine whether those recommendations are fair, justified, and supported by complete information. I am asking you to use the authority you have to revisit the recent personnel decision."
In other business, the board unanimously approved a list of donations to the district. Board member Peterson highlighted a $15,000 donation from Emerson to Shaki High School for 100 robot kits, battery packs, and game controllers—equipment that will support the school's robotics programs.
The district also reported progress on pedestrian safety. Canon Christensen, the district's Crisis and Safety Coordinator, detailed three completed Safe Routes to School projects funded by a $270,000 state grant. Improvements included a new sidewalk at Sunpath Elementary, a center island refuge at Shaki High School, and a reconfigured entrance at Sweeney Elementary. Future improvements are planned for 10th Avenue near West Middle School.
Additionally, the board received an update on the district's new literacy curriculum. The district is implementing the Arts and Letters reading program for kindergarten through fifth grade, along with new state-required reading assessments. The district is collaborating with neighboring districts Prior Lake and New Craig on teacher training and curriculum support.
