The South Washington County School Board received comprehensive updates on district science education and strategic plan implementation during its April 10 workshop meeting.

Assistant Superintendent Kelly Jansen presented the annual science education report, covering K-12 curriculum standards and student performance data. The district's MCA science proficiency rate reached 41.7% for the 2023-24 school year, with participation rates at 83% for PreACT and similar levels for other standardized assessments. Teaching and Learning supervisors demonstrated classroom instruction through video presentations showing students engaged in hands-on experiments and claim-evidence-reasoning exercises across grade levels.

Superintendent Julie Nielsson outlined progress on the district's five-year strategic plan, approved in May 2023. The plan focuses on five key areas: student experience, mastery of learning, student pathways, operations and finance, and community engagement. Notable achievements include implementing school improvement plans with individualized theories of action, establishing student ambassador groups at each school, and training all teaching staff in literacy instruction through various professional development programs.

The board also reviewed special education funding sources during a financial presentation by Business Services Director Chris Blackburn. The district receives approximately $60 million annually in state special education aid, representing about 20% of total revenue. Currently, 19.6% of district students receive special education services, slightly above the state average of 19.3%.

Board members requested additional data on MCA opt-out populations and participation rates, with staff agreeing to provide that information at the April 24 business meeting. The district will conduct staff surveys in May to update strategic plan measurements and expects to release updated vision card data following spring testing season.
