Woodbury Honors Volunteer for Show Choir Service

Meeting date: Apr 30, 2025
Published Aug 5, 2025

The City of Woodbury recognized Rosey Dickey as the 2025 EXCEL Heart of the Community Recipient for her 12 years of volunteer service with the school district's Northern Light Show Choir program.

Dickey began volunteering in 2012 when her middle child joined the show choir. She has served as both president and treasurer of the show choir parent organization, taking on responsibilities that range from costume repairs to providing emotional support for students.

According to testimonials presented during the recognition, Dickey's contributions have been essential to the program's success. Students refer to her as "mama Rosie" and turn to her for support with personal, emotional and practical needs. She learned to sew specifically to repair costumes when needed.

Dickey said the most rewarding aspect of her volunteer work is building relationships with students. She aims to demonstrate community involvement and provide support that she did not receive during her own school years. The recognition highlighted her role in helping students navigate challenges and celebrating their achievements.

The EXCEL Heart of the Community Award recognizes individuals who make significant contributions to the Woodbury community through volunteer service.

[0:04] hi my name is Rosie Dicki and I started

[0:06] volunteering at the district in 2012 so

[0:09] it's been 12 years um and I got

[0:13] introduced to the show choir because my

[0:15] middle child uh decided to join

[0:18] Showquoire and quite honestly it's

[0:22] shocking to receive an award like this

[0:24] because I feel like there are so many

[0:27] people that contribute to these groups

[0:32] and um and it's really just quite an

[0:35] honor rosie is the president and she's

[0:38] also the treasurer and she's just taken

[0:41] care of everything for the parents and

[0:43] for the kids and um without her I just

[0:47] don't think that um they would have been

[0:49] able to pull off so much as what they've

[0:51] done it's hard to explain the difference

[0:54] Rosie has made because this year's show

[0:57] choir season wouldn't have happened if

[0:59] she didn't exist she learned how to sew

[1:03] so that she could sew costumes when they

[1:05] rip we just have so many fun memories

[1:07] with Rosie being like the mom of show

[1:10] choir she might be one person's parent

[1:13] in the choir but it doesn't matter who

[1:15] you are she will be that parent for you

[1:17] too every student in show choir knows

[1:20] Rosie they call her mama Rosie they go

[1:23] to her for anything they know that if

[1:25] they have a personal need whether it's

[1:27] an emotional or physical need or a

[1:29] costume need that she is there to help

[1:31] them the most rewarding part of

[1:34] volunteering for me is the students the

[1:39] kids having those

[1:42] relationships where someone can come to

[1:45] me if they're having a hard day someone

[1:48] can come to me if they're excited or if

[1:51] they're scared or um all the range of

[1:54] emotions my goal really is to remind the

[1:58] kids and to show the kids what it looks

[2:00] like to be a member of the community uh

[2:03] when I was growing up I didn't have

[2:05] representation of that in my house my

[2:07] parents were not involved in uh in my

[2:12] school career and so I really um just

[2:15] try to be that that person for anybody

[2:18] who needs it and that's just around to

[2:20] say you got this you can do this don't

[2:23] forget who you are and where you came

[2:24] from one of our members like had a

[2:28] medical and like I had never experienced

[2:31] that before so I like immediately turned

[2:35] around and it was like in a crowd of

[2:37] like cuz we're in auditorium so it was

[2:38] like in a huge busy crowd and I

[2:40] immediately like called like Rosie

[2:43] because I like was super stressed my

[2:45] voice cracked and she like without even

[2:47] knowing that it was us like she had

[2:49] already started walking down to go help

[2:51] whatever commotion i'm proud to be

[2:55] associated with the show choir i love

[2:59] these students i love the energy that

[3:01] they bring i love how real they are we

[3:05] are raising our future leaders um and

[3:09] we're all doing that together i like to

[3:12] be able to show them that by working

[3:14] together and communicating

[3:17] and accepting each other for who we

[3:22] are that's what's going to make the

[3:24] world a better place thank you Rosie for

[3:26] everything you've done for me for

[3:29] Northern Light Show Choir and for every

[3:31] student that came through this space

[3:39] are

[3:42] not alone
