Edina Police Department opens Citizens Academy enrollment
The Edina City Council heard an announcement that the Edina Police Department's Citizens Academy still has about half its spots available for the upcoming 13-week program starting August 28th. The affordable program offers residents and workers a behind-the-scenes look at police operations.
Mayor Jim Hufflin announced during the July 16 meeting that enrollment remains open for the Citizens Academy, a community engagement program designed to give people 21 and older direct exposure to how the police department operates. The program costs just $25 per participant and runs for 13 weeks through November 20, 2025.
The curriculum provides hands-on learning experiences that go well beyond typical police information sessions. Participants will observe mock traffic stops, tour the Hennepin County Jail, meet K-9 teams, learn about drug task force operations, and watch the Edina SWAT team in action. All classes meet Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., held at either the Edina Police Department or the South Metro Public Training Facility.
To apply, interested residents can register at edamamn.gov/citizensacademy. The city requires all applicants to pass a background check before acceptance. The program gives preference to first-time attendees, ensuring new participants get priority. The Citizens Academy is funded through the Edina Crime Prevention Fund.
With roughly half the available spots still open, the police department is actively recruiting community members who want to understand police work firsthand. Those interested should register soon, as the program begins in about six weeks.
